INSTANT REACTION: Celtics grind out tough overtime win against Pistons, hand them 28th loss in a row

[Applause] bonovich pulls up nope T him the rebound the long pass Binga fakes [Applause] it who knew the best game of the season was going to be with Detroit K Town a welcome in a Celtics post game live Eddie House Amina Smith here with you the Celtics survive the Pistons in

Overtime 128 to 122 Eddie we talked about this in the pregame show I felt like this game was a little bit weird with the Detroit Pistons coming in on a 27 game losing streak the Celtics coming off of that West Coast trip and everything just seemed like it didn’t

Sit right coming into this game but what kept it so close all the way through he you right it was a janky game from the start uh what came through was you know what was even jankier let me tell you it you know what the jankiest thing about

It all was think about where we was shooting baskets in the first half in the second half usually we’re in front of their bench in the second half it was flipped so it was a bunch of janky things working you know it kind of looked a little funny but I think that

They just they just figured out exactly how they needed to get down and that was they needed to pound the paint they did that in the second half they was plus four uh they plus 46 from the first half to the second half with 66 points in the

Paint they got to moving the basketball and playing Celtic basketball and that’s what they didn’t do in first half I thought they were kind of uh just treading in mud a little bit they were a little slow A little sluggish everything was a half count off and I think that

Second half they regrouped and they came out especially in that third quarter and balled out yeah well good thing Chris stat porzingis was on the floor for the Celtics tonight 35 points out of him he’s with Abby chin after this game christops this Detroit team has a

Lot of Pride you guys were down 19 at the break you and JT basically put your team on your backs in that second half how did you complete the comeback uh we had to we knew that first half was very uncharacteristic for us and we had to turn it on on in the

Second half and you saw from the first minute we came out we came out a different team and uh and yeah we tried to do every little thing that we could to get ourselves back in the game and we did that and what a contrast in the atmosphere in in the game everything

From first half to the second right and uh it was incredible game and and I’m glad we got this win yeah the first OT win of the season winning plays up and down the floor what made the difference in this one I think our our effort our effort

Was just uh completely different in the second half um this was again I think a little bit of like example that you can get when you’re good it’s easy to kind of get a bit complacent maybe you know and that’s maybe what happened to us in

The first half after coming off a longer uh time being on a road different times on all those excuses we can find of course but we just didn’t come out the right way and you saw it it was a different team in the second half running getting those steals being

Aggressive and and we got the job done for you a season High 33 points you had 13 in the fourth quarter in overtime what were you seeing and able to execute I was just playing my game um we we were adjusting to whatever they were doing so

Whenever they were switching we try to take advantage of that uh we we saw some match up that we like for JT JT was was uh was going at those guys and and scoring and stuff and we just try to make the right play for each other everybody you know did did something

Good for us Al got a huge rebound towards the end kicked it out to me I gave it to DWI like all these little plays is what won us the game at the end so great job finally you guys haven’t faced much adversity this season really how important are these experiences it’s

Definitely I mean definitely important you know we we’re going to have games like this and and and and I think these are the type of games that can really test us and uh tonight was a good test for us being back being down 20 at half

And and coming back in a second so uh definitely valuable experience Kristof thank you congrats scal joining us live from inside of TD Garden scale this Pistons team led by as much as 21 in tonight’s match up led by 19 at the half what looked different about Boston coming out of

Halftime I mean the energy was completely different I like their attack I want to point out a few people right one like Jason Tatum not only were you seeing him aggressive trying to get downhill but like he was communicating with guys and it really meant a lot to

Him I liked his leadership today Derek white the plays that he was making you know like the getting downhill when they when Tatum went to the bench they had him kind of run the offense at times and and he was great but you you you guys and you guys have already talked about

Porzingis and and what he’s done and this team was was fantastic in that second half and obviously they can bottle that up it’s uh that’s what makes his his environment amazing and Eddie what did you notice that was different about this Celtics team going into that third quarter where they typically have

Been good as of late everything everything was different except the rebounding excuse me I I think the rebounding was probably Archilles Hill tonight but for the most part everything their energy the way they cut excuse me the way they cut the way they shared the basketball all of their

Numbers were different when you looked at what they did in the first half to the second half and SC I’ll let you take over while Eddie gets something together I think he needs some water I was like I was I was GNA Tell Eddie I was like you know what I I’ll go

Ahead and communicate with C right now what you give my man some IC te or something like that IC te you balanc man we still here man we show up when you’re not feeling well go ahead SC oh I like that I like that no management for Eddie house um yeah I

Agree with Eddie I mean the rebounding it was atrocious today outside of that and I mean I like I don’t know I don’t know what it look like for you guys on TV but here the Pistons do not look like a team that just Dro 28 straight like

That’s crazy to me when you look at the way that they played but you know give a lot of credit the fans were here and you know I I everything they needed to do in the second half they did in the first half they were a little bit flat and um

I give them a lot of credit because you a lot of teams could not tap out but it’d be hard to you know walk down a 21-point lead like that and they did it all in the first half and SC you mentioned you mentioned the rebounding

By the Pistons and the Celtics well the Pistons they outrebounded the Celtics 57 to 44 and then I take a listen to Monty Williams calling out his team just about a week ago talking about those rebounds as well and they coming down to effort how do you let a Pistons team that’s

Been called out for effort out rebound you in a matchup like this yeah I mean I think the thing that stood out 31 seconds chance points but you know like when you watch uh Duren and Ivy are live wires like they just get their hands on basketballs they like you could be in

Good position and two guys go up to jump and I’ve seen Ivy out jump porzingis like that doesn’t happen we’ve seen porzingis all year and Ivy just bounces up there and like tips that ball back so I give them a lot of credit like I just

Think like this team is a very athletic team they’re starting to pound the glass but yeah I think the Celtics just kind of you know whatever it was and they had double bigs at times getting out rebounded so obviously if you hear Joe and you guys will hear him today he’ll

Probably talk a lot about the rebounding and how like the rebounding was a big part of of how this game unfolded the way it did Eddie what did you want to see in terms of rebounding from this Celtic team because I know we talk about the offensive rebounds a lot with

Boston closing The Possession out with the rebound like Don’t Give A A Team extra opportunity especially a team especially a team that’s been you know they’re they’re in the corner they’re fighting tooth and nail their coach has called them out I’m quite sure they didn’t had about a 100 team meetings

Right I think we what with 20 30 games in they didn’t had 100 team meetings you know what I mean and it’s been about effort all those things and with when you look at it they’re going to come and play hard so I would like to see us

Match that energy and that effort on the defensive glass and tonight I mean you got to give it to them man they just didn’t quit they could have easily laid down said it’s another one of these games ain’t no way we going to beat the Boston Celtics but they gave us

Everything they handle they took us to overtime you know what I mean and it took overtime for us to get past them and I’m glad they gone you know you whoever sees them next I feel like that next energy they’re gonna they’re going to build off of this game I feel like

They just like they built off that Net game they were right there in with the next game and uh K Cunningham played well uh Ivy’s been playing well these guys are coming in they have pride they’re NBA players they want to win basketball games they don’t want to be

On the wrong side of History so even though they are they G to try to cut that water off and make sure that they win the next few games if they get an opportunity to but it got to start with one and I’m glad we don’t have to see

Him but that next team that sees them be be careful because they play hard and this is going to give them confidence for sure no one wants to be the team that loses to the Pistons a 28 game losing streak for Detroit right now all

Right thanks so much guys a look at that final score in overtime inside of TD Garden 128 to 122 coming up we hear from head coach Joe Missoula stay with us

  1. First half: 4/24 from 3, 10 turnovers, down 19

Second half: Tatum and KP and White attack, cut that lead down, only turn it over twice, comeback is all we care about

  2. We just playing like a team everybody count everybody shows up I like that killer I’m STRONG 💪 mentality has become BETTER even when they down they still have chances to come back in the game by playing the right way we have to give credit to the coach and staff number 18 around the corner!!!

  3. I love all you guys over there at NBC Sports boston, but is Abby ever going to get her questions together before she talks to these guys

  4. In the first half I swear the C's were feeling sorry for the Pistons and were trying to throw the game lol. Like doing charity.

  5. Detroit is better than their record indicates, I love the floater when their struggling from the outside, nice win, see ya tomorrow

  6. this is a "bad" win. embarrassing for the C's but i'm glad they pulled it out. 5 takeaways:

    1. mazzula returning to calling timeouts again in the 1st half. he let detroit build up a lead. turns out we had a wasted timeout in regulation that should've been used earlier. refused to challenge plays too like that KP block.

    2. i was so glad when we finally stopped going to JT sidestep 3s and went into KP post-ups at the nail. JT should learn to recognize when his 3s arent falling and go to his post-up/drives instead. i cringed everytime JT shot a 3. it was marcus smart-esque.

    3. they should've gone to KP earlier. detroit kept putting a guard or wing on him like ivey, bogdanovic, knox, livers, etc. if we took advantage earlier we could've closed this in regulation. this was because we played double big and detroit put duren on al/queta.

    4. d.white is an all-star. no one i trust more to make decisions in a close game, when the pistons were ahead or to close quarters. yes over the Js. he's the best decision maker on the team. slow start for him this game but i had no doubt he'd pick it up in the 2nd half.

    5. being outrebounded surprised me. we played double big alot last night and detroit played single big. lots of ball watching/no boxing out from d.white, hauser and tatum. i also saw tatum had the ball at his feet and refused to dive to get it so detroit got the ball back.

a win is a win. i expect al to sit tom. hopefully JB is back. Beat toronto! Let's go C's!

  7. This had trap game written all over it. Coming back from a long road trip on the other side of the country. Probably celebrated Christmas the day after with their families back in Boston. Then going back to work the next day. No brown. Last year they would not have won this. I know Porziņģis does not act like it but he has that Garnet energy. Even if it is 50% less. That man is so freaking happy to be on the best team in the NBA. He’s always talking out there lol always smiling better.

  8. Porzingis was amazing again. White was awful in the first half. Woke up some in the second. Tatum came out after half time and lot it up. 11 assists!!! Jrue was practically absent. The bench was absent. But this was a fun game. The pistons came to play.

  9. Scored 20 points in OT: 10 from White, 6 from Porzingas, 4 from Holiday. I want the ball in Derrick White's hands in crunch time.

  10. I know it’s literally against the team with the longest losing streak in NBA history, but this was a big deal game. They tried as hard as any team has tried all season to win a game and they had us down 20. They tried so hard every possession and Boston can back and made them tied with the longest losing streak ever. We forced them into history tonight kicking and screaming.

  11. Boston Celtics came back from a 21-point deficit in the 3rd quarter and the key was that they changed the game system. And it worked for them, Celtics stopped the Pistons attack. And the Boston Celtics remain undefeated at TD Garden 15-0 and the Detroit Pistons lose their 28th in a row.

  12. I went to walk my dog after the first half cuz it was frustrating af.. came back end of the 3rd, & they had done their thing 💪 hell of a comeback

  13. HONESTLY NOT SURPRISED THAT THIS WAS A DOG FIGHT THE CELTICS.
