Wolves coach Finch on ‘immature’ offensive performance in win over Mavs

Wolves coach Finch on ‘immature’ offensive performance in win over Mavs

How did you kind of try to find the way offensively through this it seemed like kind of I mean well my go when we didn’t turn the ball over we shot the lights out we were shooting 60 uh from the field 70 from three at half time uh and had 15 turnovers you

Know and we’re just you know we’re we’re going places where there’s nowhere to go and it’s you know it’s on us and it’s they’re just bad decisions and um and at that point in time we deserve to turn the ball over because just not smart

Plays you know so um when we space and we make the extra pass and we um you know trust that uh might come back to us then we’re good we’re really good so yeah you’ve made this a talking point All Season really with them like what do you think

Is not sinking in right now at that I mean it’s uh yeah I think everyone’s a little you know at times too worried about getting their own offense going um you know and I mean aunt had a hot start um and you know so we got to ride that hot

Start but then when that hot start’s over then you got to start making plays and you know other people if the if they haven’t touched the ball for a little while they can’t just decide that they’re going to put their head down and go to the hoop or they’re just going to

Jack it because I haven’t you know uh shot it for a little while and that’s everybody you know had had done that at one point in time I thought the end of the second quarter um in particular like you know we all we all were having a pity party for ourselves offensively and

Um you know that’s there’s a lot of ways to be immature you know and and generally this team’s been very mature but um you know we got to grow up offensively it’s time is it disappointing when it’s your best two offensive players who are leading the

Charge in that decision making a lot of times well yeah we need them you know we’re on them a lot to uh they have great Freedom maybe too much you know and that’s on me but they have great Freedom um and but they have the responsibility to make the game easy for

Everybody and um you know um and and and you know they they’ll they they they’ll do it it’s not all the time that they don’t but um um you know when you have guys who are natural born scorers sometimes if they’re not scoring they don’t feel like they’re impacting the

Game um but um guys you know uh there’s a lot of guys that can score and on our team and you know and we just got to know 22 assists for a team that scores 118 points and now I know I know a lot were from the free throw line but you

Know that’s we we need to be up upwards of 30 um so yeah we we got a lot of work to do on the offensive end so Rudy was perfect from the field but do you feel like in this matchup there was something left on the table there maybe for him no

Not really I mean I think I mean the way they were switching and holding and wrestling and and and jamming up all of his roles like it was tough to get him um you know freed up rolling down the the the the the paint um we tried to

Duck him in a number of times we threw the ball away trying to get it in there um um there just wasn’t a lot of composure um but yeah no I mean he he got you know he he was really good from the free throw line um he got offensive

Putbacks you know made his shots around the rim when they came to him I thought he played extremely um patient offensive game you know so I was going to ask about that too I mean he he has these games from time to time where it’s

Misses one or no no shots I mean when maybe you do have the turnovers and other things going on is there like a buoyancy to to Rudy’s kind of repeatable and efficient offense there well it’s repeatable and efficient cuz most of it you know happens around the the

Offensive glass or you know a drive in a layoff to him or something like that you know um he’s never really been a guy we featured a whole lot you know I don’t think that’s uh you know that’s like the thing that we’re trying to do we tried

To a couple times like take take advantage of they were extremely physical with it um and you know just we just we couldn’t get it in there clean and Kyle made a a corner three in this game yeah but he hasn’t been taking as many of those this season and and

Sometimes it seems in the lineups with goar that the spacing um is an issue and that was such a weapon for you guys last year the the Rudy and and Kyle lineups what’s the key to maybe getting that offense back when when those two are on

The floor together well you have to uh you know he played almost exclusively at the four Force last year and this year he plays almost exclusively at the F uh three so it’s slightly different um you know we’re fortunate enough to have like cat or Nas out there who could space and

We can keep him in some uh of the same actions that we did last year when he was at the four um but uh yeah I mean listen we tell Kyle all the time like you know you weren’t here brought here to make threes like you’re basketball

Player and um you know but we want him to stay confident in his shot um so yeah it’s also part of the overall uh kind of puzzle we’re try we got to figure out but um you know I think with him you know we have him play Everything

Sometimes he handles the ball and sometimes he you know plays in the post and some so it’s you know we just got to get we got to get a little bit more proficient at all of it in last couple weeks you’ve pretty much gone to what 8 and a half person

Lineup or whatever and a lot of Blended lineups is that something you want to do would you rather have more of an identity for that second I said that before the game I want to try to get a ninth guy um you know and um you know

Played Troy I thought he played great in his six minutes I just didn’t feel like you know I just I need a defense out there you know like they the way they were shooting the ball the way they were moving um I need as much defense as I

Possibly could get uh to try to stay with those guys and just you know keep them from putting a run together so and at the beginning of the Season you talked about a little bit more structure and the structure is kind of there but it is easy to break from you know

Without the discipline on offense is that yeah something that I mean would a re-imposition of you know some of the fundamentals of structure be a a change or do you think the structure is baked in enough you know I actually think what this team needs now is to play you know

We I mean we we’re actually like in a a mo kind of a I think we’re in a rut we’re trying to play call our way through things I think we just we got to get out and move it move it early for the sake of moving it I think um you

Know get it to the second side you know our our bigs at the top of the floor got to do a much better job of creating next action basketball um and you know we got to cut for each other I think that’s what’s one thing that’s

Kind of dried up is like our off ball cutting uh and when we do cut we just kind of cut and all lay in the lane so our spacing is jacked from that so you mentioned you know you tell Kyle that you’re not here to to make threes um but

We’ve seen you know this year he’s maybe passed up a number of open looks that he was maybe attempting last year and hitting at a at a decent rate what have kind of your your chats with him been about how much you might want him to

Shoot those how much it might help help you guys in match ups or he has the green light to shoot anytime he wants you know stay confident in your shot put it up whenever you feel confident if he doesn’t feel confident in in taking his

Shot um then uh you know then I don’t want him just to shoot it just for the sake of shooting it but um you know I think he’s trying to drive and make another play a lot of times you know get to the heart of the defense that’s

Desperately needed in our offense cuz you know he’s going to make the right play nine out of 10 times so um yeah so but you know that’s question more for him but my conversations with him are stay confident in your shot shoot it whenever you want any comments defensively

Tonight uh yeah I mean we weren’t great we found moments where we were we were good I mean um you know obvious they they got a lot a little separation in their split game and you know those guys can really shoot the ball so um I liked our physicality in the second

Half I didn’t care for it so much in the first half um yeah and you know we we had to really match this small lineup tonight just with the way that they were shooting it um yeah I mean as long as we continue to develop our playmaking out of it you

Know like the scoring out of it is uh pretty potent always has been um we just have to have the benefit of all the additional plays you know so yeah I think it’s certainly can be uh I mean it’s getting better and better all the time so I think it’s certainly like

Something that um we can keep featuring more and more but um you know tonight all the heavy switching you know it boiled down to a lot of iso stuff and you know fortunately a had one of those special nights where we had really had it [Applause] g

  1. "We've got to grow up offensively. It's time." – quite a quote from Finch. Hopefully the Wolves will see this develop by playoff time.

  2. I've tried to be patient with KAT, but I'm done with him. He was absolute trash in this game and the last. He killed any momentum built with his inability to control himself on offense or defense. I'm sick of the constant complaining. These are rookie mistakes, and he never seems to pick up on it or change it. He's not mature enough, and I don't think he ever will be.

  3. After we have this stretch of tough games I think this team has earned the ability to give Leonard Miller the chance to prove himself, and earn minutes over Kyle Anderson once we hit the playoffs.

  4. what i like about Finch is his humility. he knows how difficult it is to win at this level and keeping the players engaged boils down to coaching. and the ability to closeout games. hats off to finch. LETS GO WEREWOLVES!

  5. Sticking Kyle in the corner when he is 3/23 from 3 on the season is a terrible approach, and honestly Chris Finchā€™s biggest failure this year. I love Finch as a coach, I legitimately hope he retires as HC of the Wolves, but he is making some obvious mistakes, and Kyle is #1 with a bullet. Treat Kyle like V8 and have him moving or setting screen, or cutting, but donā€™t park him in the corner.

  6. Finch is constantly talking bad about the players, but heā€™s the coach. Run some damn plays

  7. Honestly, love finchy. Well composed, intelligent and knows what it takes to win at this level. People think he might be harsh, but he's being honest. Wolves were uncharacteristically sloppy, careless and yes immature at times tonight.

He is creating a culture and standard here. And i love it

  8. Timberwolves have improved significantly since last year but still have a ways to go to be the dominant team they can become. I believe Coach Finch will get them there.

  9. Finch knows the potential of this team and wants them to understand that if they can implement what he wants the skies the limit come playoff time.

  10. Too many turn overs . They still have lulls in execution. Its a long season. Finch stays on Ants A$$. šŸ˜‚ truly a fun season.

  11. i love the way he calls out KAT and ANT for their selfish play without calling it selfish.

look at the turnovers vs assists for those two and you can usually tell who won the game….

  12. Couldnā€™t agree more with Finch here. Thereā€™s zero excuse to have barely won that game last night. Mavs were missing their two best players, it should have been a 14+ point victory at least. Scraping by against Dallasā€™ bench is a bad sign that their offense needs to pick up
