That game Let’s dig into it because I think it was the first best football game I can remember in a college football playoff like the Special Teams Alabama Center being unable to snap the ball uh Jaylen Milo being incredibly erratic Michigan playing only Spurs of the game well um but after that result

Do you feel like Michigan was actually the better team well okay so I do they got away with some of their shortcomings because Alabama played a very sloppy game if the snap is higher and milro follows his pulling guard we might be having a completely different convers ation today but there’s this narrative

And I think this is the first modern college football playoff I think that we’re going to look back on this and say this was the beginning of something you’re familiar with 247 Talent composit OR Blue Chip Ratio or whatever Michigan and Washington should not be competing for National Championship that is not

Following the recruiting trends of of the country of the game I mean this is this is completely uh uncharted waters as far as the quote unquote Talent makeup of these teams now you augment that with the portal you augment that with with what seems to be on Michigan

Side basically an NFL staff if you look what what they’re trying to do as far as borrowing coaches from the Ravens all that stuff but also I was looking at this the other day on the PFF they have a a big board of of all 256 picks or

Whatever it should be Michigan has 15 players who look like they’re going to get drafted so like we can’t just be like oh well they what the Miracle on Ice you know oh my God I can’t believe they closed the gap on Alabama they’ve gotten they’ve closed the gap on Talent

Now Alabama has more five-star recruits on its roster than the entire Big 10 they had perhaps if you look at their recruiting patterns oh my God they had most the most Talent roster basically by recruiting in the history of of football um their Blue Chip ratio was something

Like 94% if that just means four and five stars versus three and two stars and so but how do you negate that inconsistent offense throughout the year sloppy mistake AK and even like like M Michigan had Free Runners yesterday all over the place JC laam huge Prospect

Gets blown off the ball in the last play of the game basically trips up milro which compounded the the low snap and so I just think that what we’re seeing here is teams finding ways to bridge the talent Gap that means development which I’ve always found to be overrated but it

Means being a good coach team with an identity I mean like Michigan almost reminds me of the Lions a little bit where you can skip steps in the build when you have an ident you know what you want they want to be a physical tough team along the lines along the front

Seven we saw that yesterday they’re an aggressive team I already mentioned Jesse Menor replacing Mike McDonald from the Ravens they doing basically a a coach exchange thing you know study abroad go go to college for two years then come back and be the Ravens DC that’ll probably happen when Mike

McDonald becomes the a head coach you know in in a month um and so I just think it’s we’re starting to see college football change in front of our eyes and Washington’s even bigger indictment of this but Alabama an inconsistent overrated team in the SEC um losing like

That is a sign not of things to come because I’m sure they’ll be back but it’s a sign of of of the college ball World flattening so as um you said a lot of things that are really interesting and the one that I want to jump on first

Aside from a Michigan coach taking over the coordinator job in Baltimore which I think should be reserved for my college teammate dard Wilson that’s a whole another conversation I um I think what is interesting is in this analytic itics heavy world and it’s not just analytics

As much as it’s human nature we like to be able to say that things are better or worse and we like to assign some value to certain things and I say this when you’re talking about recruiting and getting four and five stars saying that a player is four and five star or four

Or five star player is the best recruit I think most of the time means that they are better than the other players and it’s accurate it’s not to say that the rec I’m not arguing that the way we grade recruits is wrong I’m sure there’s some biases in the system but to your

Point when you are when you understand what you want to be and what you want to do you can recruit to that ability and so while you may have a two or three star it’s like how bellich always we always point to bich and he says I focus

On what the players do well and and not what they can’t do if you’re like all right we want to be physical hard noosed let me over index on these bull rush monster up front maybe they’re not going to be able to do all these other things

Maybe they won’t be the highest NFL grade but if they fit in our system and they do what we want us to do well then that could be a fast track and of course that makes your lane for Success slim it’s like if somehow you get caught in a

Style of game that you don’t want to be in or you’re not uh equipped to participate in and if like frankly if uh last night it felt I feel like we are at a place with the progress of the way that we talk about quarterbacks that we can be honest

About Jaylen milro and his ability to attack down the field if they have a quarterback that has a better ability to tack down the field the the way that they were aggressively attacking long story short you ain’t gonna do that against against Michael penck Jr I promise you you’re not gonna Blitz and

Complicated on defense and you recruit guys who can do that and things will things will happen I would I think there’s a lot of zags like the the most famous one of the most famous stories about belich and the way he views scheme is he switched from a three4 to the 4-3

Because he made the 34 so popular that nose tackles are really hard to get so he was just like all right well I created this thing I gotta change it up because I can’t get nose tackle anymore so let’s flip it I’ll go to a 4-3 get

Guys with a hand in the dirt on the outside all that stuff I think the way college football has become so homogeneous on some of these things they think you can flip it and recruit towards the scheme and get a real advantage say okay I’m not going to get

A five star like I just mentioned the stat about Alabama and their five stars I’m not going to get a five star what I can get is a high three star who can play this role this left outside linebacker role in our scheme exactly

The way I want it to do and I can I can blow JC L them off the ball uh late in the Rose Ball it’s it’s a a bit of an oversimplification but I think that’s a smart way to approach football in general if you notice like if you look

At what the 49ers are doing in the NFL it’s attacking the areas of the of the field that we have deemed uh yes low value position so like attacking the linebackers and the safeties if you’re going to play well against the 49ers you’re going to need the Ravens roster

Which is really good linebackers and really good safeties it’s the same thing happening in college and and frankly it’s a good strategy no matter what business you are in is attack the areas where other people aren’t focused but takes a good and a confident coach to
