Head Coach Adrian Griffin Postgame Press Conference | 1.3.24

Tyrese goes for 31 and 12 tonight I don’t think he had any turnovers five games against him this year what do you feel like you guys just have been unable to do to you know pressure him or make him feel uncomfortable in any sort of

Way no he’s a well he’s a good player right he makes some some tough shots uh at the end he kind of got going and hit some deep threes but overall I think we did a pretty good job you know we uh for us I thought it was just uh the turnover

So you know I challenged the the team before the game about rebounding we held them you know under single digits I think seven maybe um so our guys I thought we fought we we kept competing um I just thought the the turnovers really hurt us uh just the timing of it

And the how we were turning the ball over didn’t give us opportunity to even try to get back you know they were just like Point Blank at The Rim um I think that was where we we you know got to be strong with the ball we got to make

Great decisions with the ball I thought that’s where you know that third quarter especially how we started uh the third quarter and gave up 47 points U but overall you know like halber is going to score he’s going to get some points uh you know they got a very good team but

Um I thought we we gave ourself a chance but it’s hard when you you know turn the ball over um when you’re talking about doing a pretty good job against him what do you feel like you you are doing a pretty good job against him because when

You look at the numbers it would suggest that maybe you weren’t doing a good job yeah I mean just the the last couple games that we’ve you know played against him you know the P his pick and roll um kind of frequency is uh has been lower

Um you know they they Thrive off of him and you know I thought I guys you know he’s going to make some tough shots and you know he had a couple of isos where he’s going to shoot him uh from deep but you know outside of that um you know you

Can’t foul him either and I thought we we uh fouled him a couple times and put him to the free throw line but you know overall it was it was pretty solid like he’s you know good players is hard they’re they’re hard to stop is just

Kind of how they get their points um I mean you alluded to it there with the turnovers but 47 points in total in the third that’s not just you know the handful of turnovers so what in particular happened especially early I think they started on a 20 20 to6 run

And really took took control yeah we you know we came out of a locker room we just uh kind of out of rhythm um you know I start thought our starters played well up to to that point you know I had the starters in and we just uh got off

To a very poor start in the third quarter and then we were you know playing catchup you know we you got to execute you got to take care of the basketball you got to be able to get stops um you know they they’re a very uh energetic a athletic uh young group they

You know they fly around that they’re very uh athletic from all their positions and you know we got to neutralize some of that with our physicality without fouling um but you know we we kept competing um we didn’t give up um you know you learn a lot from

Games like this and we’ll just continue to get better what do you feel like you’ve learned about this team against the Pacers well you know they they going to the way they play right that you know they play Fast uh we have to be very disciplined and

Transition um you know with our scheme and and whatnot you got to execute at a high level I won’t go into too much detail about you know opportunities for us uh in the future you know if we play them uh in the playoffs and whatnot um but you know you always Gathering Intel

And I like some of the stuff that we were doing I thought marn was great Off the Bench I thought Dre was great um it was an opportunity for our younger guys to get out there and play in a very uh physical High intense game it was playoff atmosphere and I thought they

Handled it well so um we can get better uh we know that you know there’s always room to get better and we just got to keep plugging away you know we got to get ready for San Antonio a quick a quick turnaround we talked about Dame

Struggles a little bit the other night I think just six of 18 again tonight what did you feel like he struggled with finding a rhythm or or just kind of getting in a group offensively no I thought he was getting some uh some good looks and listen he’s going to make

Those shots you know I have complete confidence in that game um he knows how to get himself going and uh some of them a couple of them went in and out and um you know sometimes again it it’s going to have those nights but um listen it’s

It’s a lot of games left um not worried one bit about Dame he’s Dame’s going to be Dame he’s terrific I thought you know for the most part if you look at the stat sheet man it was pretty even across the board man we did shot the ball uh

Well you know shot the ball from the three-point line even evenly with them we both made 14 threes we shot 50% from uh the field they they shot 55% um again I just thought you know when you’re on the road you got to take

Care of the ball you got to you know you got to be strong with it make great decisions and um they made us pay you know when we turn the ball over they made us pay you talk about Malik’s three-point shooting this year’s been at a high level but these last two games

He’s had foul trouble with Tyrese has had to go to the bench and not really get involved get as many shots it did you feel that again tonight where you know he hits his first two threes then he’s got to sit yeah you know like like

I was saying like we we were F fouling a little bit too much uh especially with h burden and um you know listen like he’s going to make some tough shots and when he does just take the ball out and you know and uh you know rush it up the

Floor but we can’t you know once we especially once we get him inside the line like we can’t afford to put him on the on the free throw line and I thought be’s kind of got caught a couple times with his hand in the cookie jar and he

Got some quick fouls and and we had to uh set him for a little bit but again you got to be disciplined against a Halbert and a guy like that you know he’s he’s skilled and you I think lastly you have to be um willing to live with

Certain shots uh obviously you don’t want the threes but once he gets inside the line and he’s going to make a couple of those pull-up jumpers you got to be able to live a couple of those um you certainly can’t foul them and give up

The or give up the layup at The Rim uh we just got to be a little bit more disciplined with him what’s your messaging to your team especially when you start a road trip uh with the loss here and then You’ got a quick back toback I’m curious if there’s a certain

Type of messaging that you have with them in the locker room I just uh we got to shift our Focus San Antonio uh we got to uh put a great game plan together you know as a as a staff uh they got to go out and execute and and it’s you know on

The road and in the NBA uh you you you got to perform and you got to bring it and um I always say nobody’s going to feel sorry for us who cares we lost two in a row like we we can’t pal we can’t hang our heads and and that’s not the

DNA of our group like we High character guys they’re going to respond greatly you know we we lost two in a row probably I don’t know if this the first or second time that we lost two in a row but we’ll be respond well and and and

Bounce back tomorrow what do you uh what would you say about your team’s mental toughness not only in this situation with the entire season I’m curious uh what are your thoughts on it I think it’s been great like we’ve had some really great wins uh our team is really

Resilient um even in the beginning uh we dealing with a lot of you know injuries and lineup changes and rotations and many restrictions we fought through that um we’re trying to get healthy uh again and um you know again I think we we are we could have easily uh folded um we

Gave us ourself a chance at the end we missed couple threes you know I think be had a clean look Dame had a clean look Chris had a clean look you know a couple of those fall uh we we get it under 10 easily and and with 3 four minutes left

It’s it’s a ball game so I just like our fight you know we didn’t give up and and we we gave our chance ourself a chance you know when you keep competing you give yourself a chance it didn’t go our way uh we’ll go to the film find ways to

Get better like we always do and stay positive and get ready for tomorrow

  1. Brook is 7 dam foot, he gotta rebound the mother fucking basketball, 5 rebounds ain’t good enough out of a center and he has to box out, either trade him or bench him, slide Giannis to the 5 and put marjon/ajax on the floor more, Pat and Bobby aren’t playing very well, gotta make them make the most of their minutes, have to make tip ins and it’s going to be awhile before Dame gets it going consistently

  2. I’m not sold on Griffin yet. This “we did good but we lost cuz of turnovers” makes me uneasy. I want to know he has a plan in these important games. I know it takes time but I want to see more decisiveness is all idk/:

  3. they beat them one time this season a gentlemans sweep Dame was the best player on a non contending team wasnt a factor again they got their number coach better understand you will have to see them in the playoffs

  4. Don’t be surprised if we end up going out the first round this year with this lineup. We can’t rely on Dame, Beasley and Middleton to play defence.

How’s this trade scenario, trade Middleton and maybe another player like Cam Payne for Draymond Green and Gary Payton II maybe even add our unprotected 2024 second round pick just to secure Draymond.

I believe this works out for both teams, we desperately need an elite defender on this roster. GS is looking to part ways with Draymond and Wiggins is playing horrible this season. Kuminga is playing well in the starting lineup and they’re overall playing better ball without Green. Khris has become somewhat of a liability on defence, he’s had his moments shown glimpses of his former self but he’s not the same player after the injury. Good but not great as he once was especially defensively.

I hope Jae Crowder comes back healthy and makes his way to the starting lineup he’s a solid defender clearly better than Beasley.

The big difference which everyone knows between Jrue and Dame is defence. If Dame has an off night on offence then it’s probably going to end up being a bad night for the Bucks. When Jrue had poor nights on the offensive end he made up for it with his defence. You can’t say the same for Dame. That’s a difference maker when it comes to a 7 game series.

When we had PJ Tucker that was a difference maker, he played great defence definitely wouldn’t have got it done without him. Wish he resigned with the Bucks.

In my opinion if we got Draymond that’s like a Rodman with the Bulls. Great defence, brings grit and toughness, makes winning plays and is a great rebounder.

    Dame, Beasley, Middleton, Giannis, Lopez
    -Elite offence, with bad defence

And no Giannis and Lopez are great defenders. But Giannis is the best help defender he isn’t guarding the best player and Lopez is only a great post defender.

    Now imagine a starting lineup
With Dame, Crowder, Green, Giannis and lopez.

    Good scoring with elite defence.

You can see Dame is exhausted playing defence in this system, he needs to ease off the gas, not saying play no defence just not exert so much energy. It affects his rhythm, you can see him playing a lot harder on the defensive end then when he was with the Blazers. I also hope Dame and Giannis can work something out where Dame runs the ball more often.

Let’s go Bucks!! Fear the Deer!

  5. Jokes on the owners paying the luxury tax for this team. No reason to fire Bud. And if you just wanted a change you would of went with Nurse. I would say blow the team up but Horst already did that when he fired the heart and soul of the organization with Bud.

  6. The coach can only do so much… its on the heart of the players… Indiana out there playing like its game 7 every time they play milwaukee and giannis is the only one that really cares that much

  7. Coach Griffin isn't helping this team at all. Absolutely no game plan. There is a reason why Terry Stotts QUIT. It's a shit show.

  8. tbh, the lineup with cam-marjon-ajax-giannis-bp can work with fast paced teams. brook and mid r too slow for indiana.

  9. Start packing your bags, Griff … 🛍👜✈🛫 The honeymoon was over a long time ago. The Bucks are well into the season. You and your training staff can't coach. End of story. John horst … you must bring back Terry Stotts to balance the ship. and get rid of this clown … He and his training staff cant' coach. Stotts knew what he was doing by training Giannis and Dame separately…. I cannot see this team turning things around to win the East and make the NBA final.

  10. Hearing his response concerns the hell outa me as a bucks fan. We should not be losing this badly, to a team that isn’t even in championship contention. Tyrese is a hell of a player but dude we have Giannis & Dame with a defensive player of the year with a deadly 3 ball and a wing that can almost guarantee a bucket. We can’t be losing like this, and it’s clear from his answer that he doesn’t have the right mindset to get us to this chip. I was already upset when we got rid of Bud, we know damn well he ain’t deserve to be fired like that. And i’m sure i speak for all bucks fan when i say Holiday was an integral part of our team identity. We love dame and what he’s brought to our team, but now we gotta find a new identity and this coach clearly isn’t the type of coach we need.

  11. I’m done with Griff. He acts like there is no problem yet our defense is fucking atrocious. So done with him I want Bud back

  12. Turnovers were not the problem, the AWFUL defense was. If he can’t see that, then I’m VERY worried with Griff

  13. when the other team is on a roll CALL THE DAMN time out ….. stop the momentum and rhythm do not give them any @@@

  14. Every team builds a wall against Giannis and Dame. We are the only team that dont know how to build a wall against opposing stars.

  15. Why are y'all playing with my emotions… This is not how you start off the new year…y'all better start caring…🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

  16. I was worried when Terry Stotts stepped down
This team isn’t winning the chip this year lol, they just better do the right thing, admit they made a mistake, get a new coach and hope they can get a chip or two in the next few seasons

Griff may end up being a good coach, but he’s learning on the job and this isn’t the team to do that
