Should Malik Monk start for Sacramento Kings?

Should Malik Monk start for Sacramento Kings?

Malik monk was just absolutely incredible and I left going why don’t you just start him at this point and the reason I it’s it’s simple he’s one of your best players and I just think you you start one of your best guys especially right now where you

Start Chris DTE tonight he picked up two quick fouls that’s why monk had to come in a little earlier than maybe anticipated DTE played 10 minutes and 24 seconds of this game Kevin herder played just under 18 minutes of this game W’s the best guy right now so at

This point I I I am curious to see if he doesn’t start okay fine you know what I I guess I get it you want to keep him coming off the bench this is the rule you want his minutes have to go up they have to they they can’t be 25 tonight

And I know it’s trending up he played 46 tonight Malik monk needs to be pushing 30 minutes tonight yeah well yes one yes two you asked this question I asked this question to Matt Barnes and Chelsea Gray on the postgame show and I was like all right this performance why why aren’t we

Just going to Malik monk when we’re talking about that um next shooting guard uh starter yep and they were like nope nope right away nope and they talked about the importance of not only having someone that’s special coming off the bench and leading that second unit with his playmaking

With his energy with his shot making ability all the things but it was it was interesting too cuz Matt started talking about like yeah there’s guys that just have so much pride for this game and they wear that badge of honor and they think starting is that badge of honor

But you can truly create that badge of honor being in that role as well and it doesn’t matter if you’re starting the game it matters if you’re finishing the game and you are seeing exactly who is finishing games but on top of that I’m with you you got you you have to see

More minutes out of this guy if he’s not going to be starting then play him longer and I know it was during training camp this year Malik monk was talking about how it took Mike a while to trust me and I think I I’m starting to earn

His trust something to that effect I mean this this this year he’s had to have earned your trust but a game like this close game you’re trying to find a way to win it Malik monk sabonis Keegan a lot of guys stepped up tonight they will this Victory they they had to give

Everything they had in the tank 37 points he had nine assists tonight 12 of 20 shooting he was seven of 13 from three six of eight at the free throw line he played 46 minutes and a huge credit to Mike Brown because we were both really critical of that decision

Last night yes tonight you know what he said after the game about that what he said I didn’t do a good job of coaching him last night he said Mike Brown this is from James ham he said that his mistake was to not not pull monk aside

And Coach him instead of just sitting him in the first half they had a discussion today in the coach’s office and apologies were made on both sides oh that’s my God this team thank you for clapping that’s that’s what you need to do and you know you want respect as a

Coach those are the things you have to hey own up to your like if you want the players to own up and you want to hold them accountable you have to hold yourself accountable and last night Mike Brown messed up right so what did he do

He not only talk to Malik monk about it but then he goes to the media and say I didn’t do a good job coaching him last night Big Time credit to to Mike Brown for coming out and saying that to publicly behind the scenes all of the

Things um it’s just incredible how this team does take on that accountability but it does start at the top and we always talk about that and Mike Brown being able to do that and the thing is about this too it never feels like it’s for show it because it’s not it’s truly

Just he’s communicating not only like we just said behind the scenes but he is letting everyone else know and by letting everyone else know it just allows us to have another level of understanding of who these people are what type of team they are and and why

Even in a night like this when we’re like man you look at the way they had to battle this one out just to get the win there’s still so many other elements to this that had to lead to this type of win

Deuce and Mo discuss Malik Monk’s play for the Kings and if it’s time to consider starting him.

  1. We literally need a 5th reliable man the core of the kings (my humble opinion) is Fox, Domas, Malik, Keegan. We need to get that strong 5th man to the starting line up and have at least 3 solid reliable bench players maybe so guys like Domas Fox and Malik can get the rest they need from time to time

  2. Yes increase Monk's minutes, but keep as the 1st guy off the bench. That spark he provides is too important IMO. He needs a min 30 mins a night, preferably 35-38 mins.

  3. The issue is that's challenging to consistently keep his minutes higher, when he comes off the bench. It will work sometimes, but not often enough in my opinion. I wish we still had Terence Davis as a microwave scorer off the bench, which could make it easier to start Monk

  4. I think Mike Brown wants Malik to be the King's version of Andre Iguodala or maybe closer to Manu. This would make a lot more sense if Duarte was more consistent on defense so I don't mind coach giving it a shot for 10+ games.

  5. Absolutely. They started with Kentucky, went to the elite 8 as teenagers. They've grown tremendously as basketball players and more importantly, as men. Let them finish it out what they started.

  6. Monk needs to remains the 6th man, because no bench player will provide the intensity the way he does when Fox/Sabonis come off the court. If it’s Fox/Monk/Murray/Barnes/Sabonis, the bench will seem lethargic. I do agree he needs more minutes too

Also my new saying is Monk is not a starter….hes a finisher.

  7. Would love to see it I guarantee we wouldn’t come out flat and get down big if he started but we can’t trust davion duarte huerter to get buckets and create consistently off the bench in my opinion Keon never forces shots like the others knows how to keep the ball moving and can play defense without fouling like those three but at the same time he’s not enough of a spark to replace monks role so that leaves us with monk having to come off the bench which sucks for us fans and himself
