Culture Comments, Bench Role and O.G. Trade with Dennis Schröder | Raptors Show Clips

JOINING US ON THE PROGRAM IS DENNIS SCHRÖDER ONCE AGAIN. DENNIS, WE WANT TO START BY SAYING — HOW WAS THAT? >> [SPEAKING ALTERNATE LANGUAGE] IS HOW YOU SAY IT. >> I THINK MINE WAS BETTER BUT YOU’RE THE HOST. >> WE WERE SITTING IN THE STUDIO SAYING IT. VERY SILLY.

HAPPY NEW YEAR OBVIOUSLY IN GERMAN. WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT A COUPLE THINGS, ABOUT YOUR NEW TEAMMATES, WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE WIN YOU HAD AGAINST THE GRIZZLIES LAST NIGHT, WHICH WAS GREAT, THE ROAD TRIP YOU’RE ON BUT WE WANT TO CLARIFY A COUPLE COMMENTS YOU MADE AFTER THE GAME AGAINST DETROIT.

OBVIOUSLY AN EMOTIONAL DAY, EVERYBODY, YOU KNOW, FINDING OUT THAT THE TRADE HAPPENED. AND THEN OF COURSE LOSING TO THE PISTONS WHEN THEY WERE ON A 28-GAME LOSING STREAK WAS OBVIOUSLY REALLY UNFORTUNATE. YOU MADE SOME COMMENTS AFTER THE GAME JUST ABOUT SORT OF WANTING TO GET THE GROUP BACK TO A POINT

WHERE THERE’S STRONG CULTURE AROUND THE TEAM, WHERE EVERYONE IS SORT OF PLAYING FOR EACH OTHER. I WANT TO ASK HOW DID YOU THINK THOSE COMMENTS WERE PERCEIVED AND WHAT WAS SORT OF YOUR TRUE INTENTION BEHIND SOME OF THOSE STATEMENTS? >> AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU

KNOW, WE WANT TO CREATE OR HAVE A WINNING MENTALITY AND I THINK THIS ORGANIZATION, YOU KNOW, WON IN 2019, AND THEY KNOW WHAT IT TAKES, YOU KNOW, TO WIN AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, I JUST WANT TO BE HERE LONG-TERM AS WELL AND RECREATE OR CREATE, YOU KNOW,

WINNING HABITS AND, YOU KNOW, JUST BE IN A WINNING ORGANIZATION. AT THE END OF THE DAY, JUST TO WIN AND WE JUST TRY TO DO THAT AS BEST AS POSSIBLE. >> SO WHEN YOU MENTIONED IN THOSE COMMENTS, YOU DREW A COMPARISON TO THE GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM YOU WON GOLD WITH

IN THE WORLD CUP AND WHAT THAT CULTURE WAS LIKE, HOW LONG THAT TOOK YOU GUYS TO BUILD, YOU KNOW, WHETHER IT’S THOSE COMMENTS OR JUST GENERALLY, WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO TAKE FROM THAT EXPERIENCE WITH GERMANY AND HELP BRING TO THIS RAPTORS LOCKER ROOM, WHETHER IT’S EXAMPLES FROM

THERE OR HOW TO BUILD THAT CULTURE OVER A COUPLE OF YEARS? >> YEAH, I MEAN, IT TOOK A LOT OF TIME BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I JUST WANT TO BE CLOSE TO EVERYBODY AND ENJOYING OUR TIME TOGETHER BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, WITH OUR TEAMMATES OR

THE ORGANIZATION, MORE THAN OUR OWN FAMILIES SO JUST EMBRACING IT AND BEING EXCITED AND, YOU KNOW, FOR ME, THIS IS WHAT I DO, DON’T TRY TO TAKE THE WHOLE THING FOR GRANTED AND JUST TRY TO CREATE, YOU KNOW, THAT EVERYBODY’S LIKE KIND OF HAPPY TO SEE EACH OTHER EVERY SINGLE

DAY AND, I MEAN, CREATE THAT CULTURE A LITTLE BIT, AND THAT’S THE REASON WHY I’M HERE, JUST TRY TO BE A LEADER AND TRY TO SHOW IT THAT WE WANT TO DO THAT, WE WANT TO MOVE IT FORWARD, BE LIKE A FAMILY AND WANT TO DO THINGS OFF THE COURT AS WELL.

THAT’S WHERE WE STARTED TO PUT IN AS WELL GOING TO DINNER WITH LIKE THE TEAM, JUST HANGING OUT AND JUST HOW WE START ON THE NATIONAL TEAM AS WELL. >> AND SPEAKING OF DINNER, YOU’RE ONE WIN AWAY FROM DARKO BEING ON THE HOOK FOR TEAM DID I KNOW SEWER THAT’S GOOD.

DENNIS, AFTER THOSE COMMENTS ON SATURDAY, THE REACTION TO THEM WAS MAYBE NOT IN THE SPIRIT YOU MEANT THEM. DID YOU TALK TO TEAMMATES ABOUT THAT TO CLARIFY WHAT YOU HAD MEANT OR IS THAT KIND OF KNOWN ALREADY IN THE LOCKER ROOM WHAT YOUR SUSPENSION IS AND KIND OF WHAT YOU MEANT THERE?

>> AT THE END OF THE DAY, EVERYBODY WANT TO WIN, YOU KNOW. EVERYBODY’S COMPETITIVE. DIDN’T TALK TO NOBODY AFTER THOSE OR AFTER THAT INTERVIEW. BECAUSE EVERYBODY I THINK KNOWS THAT I JUST WANT TO WIN. IT’S ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WINNING IN THE NBA, IT’S HARD TO WIN IN THE

NBA, AND JUST TRYING TO KEEP EVERYBODY ENGAGED AND, YOU KNOW, I THINK WE STILL CAN TURN THINGS AROUND. AND TRY TO WORK EVERY SINGLE DAY TO GET TO THAT POINT AND LIKE YOU MENTION, WE GOT TO PLAYERS, THEY’RE DOING A GREAT JOB OF BEING IN THAT SYSTEM. >> LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NEW

PLAYERS COMING IN BECAUSE THAT WAS OBVIOUSLY A HUGE TRADE THAT TOOK PLACE JUST BEFORE THE NOYA AS WE HAD PREVIOUSLY TRIED TO BUTCHER AND SAY IN GERMAN. TAKE US THROUGH THAT DAY. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT THE NEWS THAT OG, MALACHI, PRECIOUS WERE LEAVING THE TEAM AND THAT EMANUEL QUICKLEY AND RJ BARRETT

WAS JOINING THE TEAM? >> YEAH, IT WAS IN DETROIT, YOU KNOW, HAVING THE BREAKFAST MEETING AND, YOU KNOW, COACH MENTIONED, YOU KNOW, YOU GUYS DON’T SEE THREE PLAYERS RIGHT NOW, BEEN WITH US ALL SEASON. IT WAS OF COURSE SHOCK FOR EVERYBODY BECAUSE, I MEAN, WE DIDN’T REALLY EXPECT IT, YOU

KNOW, AND THEY FAMILY, THEY FRIENDS BECAUSE, I MEAN, I’VE BEEN WITH THEM LIKE TWO, THREE MONTHS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, LIKE I SAID, WE SPENT THE MOST TIME WITH THEM, YOU KNOW, WITH OUR TEAMMATES, COACHES, FRONT OFFICE, WHEREVER. AND PEOPLE NOT THERE NO MORE, YOU KNOW, ALWAYS KIND OF

SHOCKING TO PEOPLE. OF COURSE OG BEEN THERE SEVEN YEARS. FOR HIM, IT WAS TOUGH AS WELL. EVERYBODY REACHED OUT, EVERYBODY GOT TO SEE HIM, TALK TO HIM. AND PRECIOUS SAME THING, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE JUST TRY TO DO THE BEST POSSIBLE TO GO OUT AND STILL WIN A BALLGAME.

I THINK WE PLAYED REALLY HARD THAT GAME AS WELL BUT WE CAME UP SHORT. AND, I MEAN, TO HAVE QUICKLEY AND RJ BARRETT GIVES US A LITTLE, YOU KNOW, I MEAN, THE GUARD WHO CAN HANDLE STILL — RJ CAN TAG IN TRANSITION, HE CAN SHOOT THREES, QUICKLEY BEING

KIND OF LIKE — COMING OFF SCREENS. IT WAS, YOU KNOW, FOR US, I THINK IT WAS GREAT. OG, I MEAN, PRECIOUS AND MAL, WE LOVE THEM BUT I THINK WE JUST GOT TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD AT THE NBA, BUSINESS SIDE OF IT AND TRY TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT.

>> DENNIS, YOU’VE BEEN ON BOTH SIDES, YOU’VE BEEN TRADED IN-SEASON, BEEN ON TEAMS THAT MADE TRADE AND BROUGHT GUYS IN. YOU SHOW UP TO OVO CENTRE ON NEW YEAR’S DAY AND THOSE GUYS ARE THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT IS THAT PROCESS LIKE, YOU GETTING TO KNOW THESE GUYS AND

TRYING TO WORK THEM IN WITH NO REAL PRACTICE BEFORE THE FIRST GAME? >> YEAH, I MEAN, THEY CAME BEFORE THE ARENA JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY GOT THE BASIC PLAYS, WENT UP WITH THE COACHES SO THEY KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON OWE. THEY DID A GREAT JOB, YOU KNOW, WENT THERE EARLY.

AND I THINK THEY DID A GREAT JOB IN THEIR FIRST GAME, YOU KNOW, AND WE WON THAT GAME AS WELL AGAINST CLEVELAND. I THINK THEY ADAPTED WELL AND WE MADE IT A LITTLE EASIER FOR THEM I THINK BECAUSE WE WANT THEM TO BE A BIG PART OF WHAT WE’RE DOING. THEY’RE STILL YOUNG.

LIKE I SAID, YOU KNOW, WHEN SHOOTING, TRANSITION, IT’S JUST WHAT FITS IN OUR SYSTEM AND, YOU KNOW, BUILDING THE TEAM AROUND SCOTTIE, I THINK THAT’S TWO GREAT PIECES, YOU KNOW, BEFORE THEM, AND WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE, LIKE I SAID, JUST WANT TO GET BETTER EVERY SINGLE DAY AND,

YOU KNOW, TRY TO PUSH — TRY TO KEEP PUSHING AND KEEP GETTING BETTER EVERY SINGLE DAY. I THINK THEN IT WILL BE FINE END OF THE YEAR. >> DENNIS, I NOTICE THAT SHOOT AROUND QUICKLEY HAD TAKEN MALACHI’S SPOT IN THOSE SHOOTING GROUPS. I KNOW YOU AND MALACHI AND TEMPLE HAVE HAD SOME PRETTY

INTENSE SHOOTING COMPETITIONS AT THE END OF PRACTISES. DO YOU WARN THEM WHAT THOSE ARE GOING TO BE LIKE, HOW HIGH THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION IS IN YOUR SHOOTING GROUPS? >> YEAH, NOTHING GOING TO CHANGE THERE, YOU KNOW. ALWAYS COMPETITIVE. OF COURSE MAL, YOU KNOW, HE DID GREAT STUFF THIS SEASON.

I MEAN, TO JUST BEING CONFIDENT AND COME OUT THERE AND CHANGE THE GAME, BEING COMFORTABLE EVEN OFFENSIVELY SOMETIMES, PLAYING VERY WELL AND I’M HAPPY FOR HIM. I HOPE HE’S GOING TO GET, YOU KNOW, HIS TIME WITH NEW YORK AND GOING TO PLAY A GOOD ROLE FOR THEM.

BUT QUICKLEY IS NOW WITH US AND SAME RULES APPLY. GOING TO BE VERY COMPETITIVE AND GONNA BE GOING AT IT FOR SURE. >> YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO LEARN BOORAY REAL QUICK? >> WHAT’S THAT? >> THEY’RE GOING TO LEARN BOORAY REAL QUICK IF THEY DON’T KNOW IT ALREADY.

>> OH, THEY KNOW IT, THIS IS AN NBA GAME. EVERYBODY KNOW THAT. >> THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE HEADING FOR THE FLIGHT, THAT’S WHERE THEY’RE GOING TO DO THAT GAME. LISTEN, WITH THE GAME LAST NIGHT, OBVIOUSLY YOU WERE ABLE TO TAKE DOWN THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES. I NOTICED A LOT IN THIS GAME

DARKO HAD YOU ON JOHN MORANT AND I WAS CURIOUS, YOU PLAYED THEM LAST YEAR WITH THE LAKERS AND YOU HAD A LOT OF THE MINUTES GUARDING JOHN MORANT. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE EXPERIENCES LIKE, DID YOU DROP BACK ON WHAT YOU DID LAST YEAR WITH THE LAKERS IN TRYING TO

GUARD AGAINST JOHN WHO OBVIOUSLY IS AN INCREDIBLE PLAYER? >> YEAH, ONE OF THE BEST POINT GUARDS IN THIS LEAGUE AND NUT FE FACE OF THE NBA, THERE’S A COUPLE OF THOSE IN THE LEAGUE, AND WE PLAYED THEM, LIKE YOU SAID, LAST YEAR IN THE PLAY-OFFS, AND I THINK WE DID A

GREAT JOB OF THE GAME PLAN. I THINK THE COACH IS THERE WITH THE LAKERS, — DID A GREAT JOB OF COMING UP WITH THAT. SEND ME TO THE LEFT. BECAUSE IF HE COMES OFF LEFT WITH THE — HE KIND OF LOOKS FOR, YOU KNOW, THE — DRIBBLE AND FOR THE FLOATER, HE GOES

RIGHT, YOU KNOW, HE DOING THAT FLAMINGO DRIBBLE AND AFTER THAT, IT JUMPS BACK. AND I MENTION THAT, YOU KNOW, AND THE SHOOT AROUND, THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO SEND THEM LEFT AND COACH DARKO KNEW, YOU KNOW, WAS ON THE TRAINING, THAT COACHING STAFF THAT WE DID A GREAT JOB

AND HE WAS LIKE I LIKE IT, I LIKE IT, AND THAT’S THE REASON WHY I ALWAYS SAY DARKO DOING A GREAT JOB OF LISTENING TO HIS PLAYERS, SOMETIMES WHEN, YOU KNOW, SOMEBODY GOT A SUGGESTION ABOUT A DIFFERENT DEFENSIVE COVERAGE, AND IT WAS — WE STILL PLAYED A GREAT GAME BUT I THINK

WE LIMITED A LITTLE BIT AND SLOWED HIM DOWN A LITTLE BIT. AND GOT THE “W.” >> WE GOTTA ASK YOU SOME TIME ABOUT WHAT THE FLAMINGO DRIBBLE IS. >> YOU CAN PICTURE IT. IT’S PRETTY DESCRIPTIVE TERM. >> IN GERMANY WE CALLED IT FLAMINGO DRIBBLE, THE DROP, DROPPING THE BALL AND THEN DO

THE HANDLING WITHOUT NO DRIBBLE. >> GOTCHA. >> STEP TO THE RIGHT AND GO LEFT, THAT’S HOW HE CAUGHT A LOFT BODIES. >> HE DID THAT TO WEMBY THE OTHER DAY. >> HE’S DONE IT TO JAKOB A FEW TIMES. >> A FEW TIMES, YEAH. >> I WAS GOING TO ASK, TOO,

ABOUT YOUR CONVERSATIONS WITH DARKO BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE HAVEN’T SPOKEN TO YOU IN TWO WEEKS. HOW WAS THAT CONVERSATION LIKE WHEN HE DECIDED TO HAVE THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOU ABOUT, DENNIS, YOU’VE BEEN STARTING ALL YEAR BUT I THINK GOING FORWARD, WE WANT TO TRY TO SEE WHAT YOU

LOOK LIKE, YOU KNOW, IN A SIX-MAN TYPE OF ROLE, HOW DID THAT CONVERSATION COME ABOUT AND HOW DID YOU RECEIVE IT WITH DARKO? >> I MEAN, CAME UP TO ME, I TRY TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE FOR THE TEAM AND WIN AND HE THOUGHT IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT TO LIFT CONTINUE TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE COMING IN AS A SIXTH MAN AND HELP THE SECOND UNIT AND I THINK IT’S BEEN GREAT SO FAR AS WELL. EVERY ROLE, I MAKE SURE I TAKE

GOOD PRIDE OF IT AND MAKE THE BEST OUT OF IT AND I THINK JUST BEING A PROFESSIONAL OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS PLAYING WITH HALL OF FAMERS AND ALWAYS, YOU KNOW, TRY TO FIND MY WAY TO EFFECT, YOU KNOW, JUST WINNING, I THINK SO FAR, IT’S WORKING, ESPECIALLY QUICKLEY COMING IN

AND RJ BARRETT, I THINK REALLY WELL. >> WITH QUICKLEY IN PARTICULAR, WHETHER YOU’RE COMING OFF THE BENCH OR STARTING, YOU’RE GOING TO PLAY A LOT OF MINUTES TOGETHER, MORE THAN YOU PLAYED ALONGSIDE MALACHI. HE DIDN’T PLAY A TON OF MINUTES WITH BRUNSON IN NEW YORK. WHEN YOU AND QUICKLEY ARE ON THE

COURT TOGETHER, WHAT CHANGES FOR YOU, ARE YOU ANTICIPATING SETTING HIM UP, LOOKING FOR HIM, COMING OFF THE BALL FOR THE THREES, ARE YOU LOOKING TO COME OFF THE BALL A LITTLE BIT MORE, HOW DO YOU THINK THAT THAT CHEMISTRY WILL DEVELOP FOR YOU TWO? >> LIKE I SAID, THERE WAS A LOT

OF GREAT PLAYERS AND QUICKLEY IS ONE OF THEM. HE’S SO YOUNG, BUT I THINK HE’S GOING TO TAKE OVER THIS YEAR AND HE’S GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, HE HAD A LOT OF GREAT GAMES LAST SEASON, BEING THE STARTER WITH THE NEW YORK KNICKS. I THINK SETTING HIM UP, SETTING

HIM UP AND GOT THAT TWO-MAN LINE-UP OUT THERE, I THINK WE SHOULD PLAY FASTER, YOU KNOW, THOSE FLIP-OUTS. I THINK IT’S GREAT, YOU KNOW, TO HAVE THAT, OF COURSE, ON THE DEFENSIVE END, WE’VE GOT TO MAKE SURE WE REBOUND BUT I THINK ON THE OFFENSIVE END, WE CAN PLAY MUCH, MUCH, MUCH FASTER.

SECOND GAME, THIRD GAME TOMORROW, WE STILL LEARNING EACH OTHER BUT I WANT TO JUST LET HIM KNOW AND HE KNOWS NOW ALREADY THAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE HE’S IN THE RIGHT SPOTS, TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHAT HE LIKES, WHAT I LIKE, AND WE JUST GOT TO KEEP BUILDING THAT CHEMISTRY AND, OF

COURSE, THEN WITH SCOTTIE, IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT, PASCAL, THAT EVERYBODY, YOU KNOW, GET INVOLVED IN THAT AND I THINK THAT WOULD BE FINE. >> YEAH. AND DENNIS, WE’VE TAKEN A LOT OF YOUR TIME SO LAST QUESTION, WE’VE BEEN LOOKING AT YOUR SUNGLASSES AND THEY’RE VERY REFLECTIVE AND I THINK WHO IS

THAT SITTING ACROSS FROM YOU, IS THAT PASCAL? WHAT’S GOING ON? YOU’RE ON THE TEAM BUS RIGHT NOW SO ALL WE CAN SEE IS THESE SUNGLASSES, MAN. >> I TRY TO, YOU KNOW, I TRY TO BLOW NOBODY’S COVER, YOU KNOW. BUT YEAH, WE AT THE AIRPORT NOW ABOUT TO GET ON THE PLANE AND

HAVE LIKE THREE-AND-A-HALF OR FOUR-HOUR FLIGHT SO GOING TO GET SOME REST AND THEN WE GOT A TEAM DINNER TONIGHT, GET TOGETHER. AND THEN BE READY FOR SHOOT AROUND TOMORROW. >> THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY REALLY EXHAUSTING TRIPS, SIX GAMES ACROSS A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CITIES ON THE WEST COAST BUT ESPECIALLY WITH TWO NEW GUYS,

CAN THIS BE A GOOD TRIP FOR YOU GUYS AS A GROUP COMRADERY-WISE AND EVERYTHING? >> YEAH, I THINK SO. I THINK WE GOT TO USE IT. EVERYBODY RESPECT WHEN WE AT HOME, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE GOT FAMILIES, I GOT THREE KIDS, MY PEOPLE, IT’S ALWAYS TOUGH TO GET TOGETHER THERE, BUT I MEAN ON

THE ROAD, WE TRY TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT, PLAYING CARDS TOGETHER IN THE ROOM, YOU KNOW, GO TO DINNER, IT’S ALWAYS GREAT, TO BE IN THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD AND ENJOY EVERYTHING, EMBRACE IT, AND I MEAN 11 YEARS NOW IN IT AND REALLY GRATEFUL FOR THAT. ENJOYING EVERY

  1. Dennis should have less offense role when Pascal and Scottie are on the court. Pascal asked the ball in clutch time last night, but Dennis insisted to hold it by himself.

  2. Really great question and answer about how the road trip can be an incredible team-building opportunity for the new guys.

  3. A bit difficult for Dennis to clarify his comments in depth when you can literally see his teammates right across from him in the reflection of his glasses lol. I understand why it was hard for him to go more in depth on what he meant. Think that should be taken into account when asking questions to a player surrounded by his teammates on a bus lol

  4. Good on you guys for asking some very direct and challenging questions, and special kudos to Dennis for answering them honestly. These weekly interviews with Dennis are proving to be revelatory. To borrow an old Yiddish expression, he’s a mensch.

  5. Great Interview and the question about the reflecting people in the glasses… I really Like Dennis and how he handles the Trade. One view about his stats and you can see he is in this time of the season really successful. Also he is grateful. He is living his Dream. Love that!

  6. dennis off the bench is just the perfect role for him, he can demolish second units on other teams, hope he stays in this role and continues to produce, this is the consistency raptors needed off the bench, and only possible because IQ and RJ can help the starters now

  7. next time don't interview Dennis when he's dead tired from a game and just about ready…….. " for the end of the day"…… endless!

  8. Schröder said what he said cuz it was the truth. You could see the disengagement and the lack of cohesiveness all over the court and on the bench as well. Losing obviously wasn't helping but Schröder was calling it out. Period. And good for him, this team has gone way too long without real accountability, honesty and a strong team-first culture.
