[Dr. Nirav Pandya, M.D.] Re: the CP3 hand fracture. There is a lot of variability in terms of timeline for RTP based on which finger is broken (thumb is the worst), which bone (metacarpal is most common), & the fracture type (near the joint vs away). Best case = 4 wks. Worst case = 3 mths

  1. He explained what could allow for the earlier RTP in another [tweet](https://x.com/drniravpandya/status/1743638509368254679?s=46&t=SBW3XJi-eEDBr6FtvDfngg):

    > Fracture location and pattern is key in determining the RTP timeine for hand fractures. In certain cases, plates / screws can be placed in such a way that allows earlier return to play (i.e. 4 weeks). In very complex injuries, it can extend out to 3 months.

For what it’s worth, based on where CP was rubbing his hand (it was more his palm…I want to say it looked to have been either the metacarpal – aka bone in palm that connects to each finger – of his pointer or middle finger based on the area he was rubbing/massaging and based on the video of where his hand got snagged on the Pistons player when it happened), it seems very unlikely that it’s his thumb.

  2. Good timing. This means he will be healthy for the playoffs
