The Timberwolves NEED To Do More Of This…
Welcome to another how and GRS breakdown today we’re zooming all the way in on a couple of possessions that we saw in Minnesota’s blowout win over the Houston Rockets because it ties into my last video about how much better Minnesota are when they actually run set plays and
Don’t freelance too much on offense obviously there could have been a lot of different ways to go with this breakdown since Minnesota had such a convincing win but since offensive structure is the buzzword around wolves world right now I thought it would be fun to break down
What I think might be their most productive set play so let’s just Dive Right In the play is horns exit and we don’t see it all that often but when we do it goes like this so we get the horns part of it from here you see Nar Reed on
This elbow and nille Alexander Walker on this one creating that horns and then the exit part comes as Alexander Walker hooks around here and comes off a corner exit screen so that’s how it gets its name but we can pull it back here and this is how it
Unfolds as Alexander Walker curls Reed comes up here and sets this ball screen now the important part here is that Alexander Walker has taken his man away from the middle of the floor so when Reed catches on the roll this helper is stuck on the strong side in the middle
Of Reed rolling and town spotted up outside that’s a bad place to be so he digs in to stop Reed but that leaves towns open and now the biggest defender on the court is stuck up here the low man help is still worried about the corner shooter here and the exit
Screener is here occupying another potential helper so now there’s no Rim protection there and town swis cheeses his way to the basket and when they go to it again we see that counter so again it’s read up into the screen here and Alexander Walker here curling off that
Exit screen and you see this time Thompson wants to stay here in the the paint to help on Reed so he’s calling for a switch on the exit screen but if that switch isn’t razor sharp you get two players hung up behind this screen and now Alexander Walker has curled his
Way into a wide open Corner three ball later on in the game we get to see it turn into another counter this time it’s Troy Brown Jr coming up to set the screen and it’s Alexander Walker here again ready to curl through as we’ve seen before instead though Brown Jr
Ghosts this screen here here to come out to the wing and then no sets this little flare stream to keep him open in that shooting slot so instead of that horns exit turning into a r man possession or a corner three on the weak side it’s a
Horns ghost flare action that turns into a wing three on the strong side and we’ve seen other counters in other games this season a few weeks back we see it work really well in this possession as usual it’s the ball screen and the curl from the horns formation again that curl
Pulls the defender away and leaves all of this space in the middle for Reed to roll into so when sabona steps up to take Reed’s roll away doar slips in behind sabonis and it’s an easy lob finish I think that’s about as well as we’ve seen the Timberwolves run this
Play all season but again they don’t run it enough to get a really large sample size here’s another example of it working in a different but still similar way normal opening here ball screen coming up and Corner curl going around but this time they skip nar’s Reed as
The middleman and just punish the Jazz for digging in here to help on Reed by skipping the ball out to Brown on the wing to punish that helper and knock down that Wing three again this is all the same play but they’re just reading the defense and seeing what the defense
Does and then making the decision from there and of course the most simple version of this is that it just turns into a straight up roll man finish if the curler clears that space here correctly and then this player isn’t here early in help then the player
Setting the screen as you can see it’s usually Nars Reed for Minnesota can just stroll into that open area and finish at The Rim obviously I don’t know the inner workings or why they’re not running this at least once every game but I do know that this is the kind of thing that
Would smoothing out what is often a really rough offense for Minnesota it was a bonus to see it in this Rockets game and see it more than once hopefully that’s a sign going forward that we’re going to see a little bit more structure within that offense thanks again for

First!
These breakdowns are so nice and it's especially nice to watch after a big win over a solid team. Also I do have to say that Jmac was really good this game as he was zipping around the floor and moving the ball which lead to more defensive breakdowns for the Rockets. It's really nice to have a backup point guard that can provide pace and energy off the bench. Really hope his shooting stays solid.
One thing I've noticed, and I'm in no way qualified to comment on it, is that the screen setting abilities on the team get tested in these set plays. Gobert is clearly elite at blocking off sometimes multiple defenders to create open looks above the arc or an easy back cut. KAT has never been great at it and you can see in some of these actions his defender easily slips it and blows up the action
Did you notice how well the KAT + Naz pairing worked last night? KAT was looking to kick to Naz early on so many of his drives. Passing early helps KAT stay away from the offensive fouls. Hoping this trend continues
Naz is special man. Love him on my team so much.
Last night was fun to watch 🔥
First time subscriber, I love the article that was emailed out today. Great stuff!
That Knicks loss feels less awful seeing that they blew out the 76ers
Beautiful breakdown! Now I can be even more upset when Finch lets the flow offense stagnate, lol
Jake, do you feel that Kat doesn't look for the corner three as much because he has such big feet and is concerned about stepping out of bounds?
Biggest difference was they moved Kat around. It got the defense moving and allowed guys to attack defenders that werent set.
