Optimism and concern from the Bulls 2-game sweep over the Hornets

Optimism and concern from the Bulls 2-game sweep over the Hornets

Hi everybody welcome into the Bulls Talk podcast brought to you by Toyota Let’s Go Places I’m Kevin Anderson joined by our Insider for NBC Sports Chicago who covered the Bulls for the last 30 plus years a man who nothing slips through the cracks Casey Johnson um casy let’s

Uh talk about first the uh back-to-back wins over the Hornets and the home and home uh the the win on Friday was more convincing than the win on Monday night they needed overtime for that they did not um look good for a lot of stretches uh in the Monday night Hornets game they

They eak out the win so certainly if you’re looking at positives the good thing is they won they beat Charlotte two games in a row who’s a very bad bad team and in a very bad way right now uh without Lamela ball though who is getting much closer to returning to the

Court um but if you’re looking at positives um there are a few things to take away if you’re looking at negatives and things to be concerned about there’s several things to take away um first I’ll just ask you your impression of what you saw Monday night in Charlotte

And the good and the bad and what you took away from that game well several things first of all for those watching on YouTube Welcome to the haad edition of the Bulls Talk podcast because both bulldog and I are sporting hats it’s very cold here in Chicago today so I’ve

Got a knit hat on yeah uh but I was not in Charlotte so like you I was watching on TV for those close listeners of the Bulls Talk podcast you’re aware that I underwent a standard medical procedure yesterday which we will not go into details on get into that I will just say

Thank you to Bulldog for pinching on the observations please check those out you’re welcome chicago.com they’re very good and very thorough as usual and that leads into my uh answer um look the Bulls are in no position to be judging victories they are going to take whatever Victory comes their way and I

Wrote no matter the fact that they have 10 of 15 on the road this month this month is a huge opportunity to move up into the standings which they did by virtue of their ugly Monday night Victory they are in ninth place now now they obviously started 0 and2 with that

Tough backtack in Philly and New York this month but now they are two and two thanks to the scheduled gods that gave them the Charlotte Hornets um and I’m going to focus more on the positive because the ending to that game was ugly way too much dear ISO ball as you

Alluded to in your fine observations um but until that poor finish they had shot over 50% with over 25 assists for the second straight regulation game um we can really get into the Weeds on Zack LaVine um and I think that there’s more positive than negative uh and since I’m

Focusing uh on the sorry there’s some breaking news on Tyrese halberton that is on my phone so oh no let’s let’s share that one I se uh evaluated in two weeks but there’s relief that he’s avoided Serious injury according to W do the Pacers they don’t face the Pacers in

The next two weeks but unfortunately that actually he might even still be in the All-Star Game I digress um Zach I think more positive than negative I don’t love the possessions where he’s just running to the corner and standing there I understand they’re trying to plus Place him in more catch and shoot

Situations and liit his dribbling and decision- making that’s fine I don’t need to see Dal terryon pick and roll on the top of the floor with Zach standing in the quarter I just don’t that’s me um but I think the fact that he’s been engaged defensively for two straight

Games and um you know taken more of the right shots than not um and been in more catching Su shoot situations is a plus so I don’t know man like I said these are not Artful victories but they are victories so I’m I’m drinking the the positive Kool-Aid today so Billy Donovan

Spoke highly of Zach’s defense and how he played not just Monday but on Friday as well he’s uh engaged he’s got a uh renewed enthusiasm if you will for for playing defense and let’s let’s be honest Zach has probably unfairly by a lot of people been labeled as a bad

Defender he actually is a fairly decent on ball Defender it’s some of the stuff off ball and the rotations and the team Concepts that he tends to get away from sometimes losing his guy uh behind him get call ball watching at times um but certainly with how he played you know

Friday Monday he he seems to be locked in defensively which is a really really good good place to be and Billy was asked specifically about Zach’s offense and he’s not concerned about it nor he should be um about you know certainly Zach didn’t play great on Monday offensively shooting wasn’t great um but

To Billy’s Point Zach’s and we noticed this on Friday Zach is actually passing up some shots that maybe the free injury Zach from 19 games ago maybe would have taken now I don’t know if this is just his buying in to the philosophy of ball movement and sharing and trying to run

Uh a more modern NBA offense um perhaps uh perhaps he is not as confident as he would be uh when he’s fully healthy uh maybe he’s just trying to be a good teammate and he’s trying to look for a perfect shot or sometimes a good shot is

For him a great shot for most people um but I’m not really that concerned about where LaVine is offensively and if we get what we saw defensively out of him these last two games every night for the remainder of his Bulls career however long that’s going to be I think we’re in

G to be in a pretty good spot like the offense is going to come you know certainly what Zach brings to the table better than most is Elite shooting and as much as Dale and Terry and IO did fairly well on Friday in terms of getting up their shots and hitting some

Threes um long term you want Zach in that lineup and you want Zach in those positions to take the shot and like I said it’s clear that they’re trying to play him more in catch and shoot situations and less dribbling decision-making I mean six of his eight

Attempts hold on he might have taken nine no six of his eight attempts um in Charlotte in the Monday night game were from three-point range I mean you’re not going to probably have 75% of his uh attempts be from three-point range every game but the closer you get that to 50

Or above the better I think the Bulls are and um I agree with you on Friday night it was clear he was almost overcompensating by passing up shots and trying to ease his way into the game uh look he has not played to his standards offensively we’ve said that at aium on

This podcast um you have to believe at some point if he’s if he remains with the bulls that that’s going to come but you know five assists in 36 minutes six of eight attempts from three-point range so he’s more more in catch shoot situations and a gate and an engage Zack

LaVine defensively the Bulls will sign up for that any day of the week so we’ll see where this goes um moving on to onto one of the other big bright spots is the combined play of vuvi and Drummond in the game uh combining for 42 points and

25 rebounds um I texted you very sha like very Prime Shack yes yeah I mean my goodness I mean if you get a production like that out of that position uh I mean that that’s uh that that’s that’s impressive I I don’t expect anything like that close to every single night I

Mean certainly minutes wise vuich played 30 uh Drummond played 23 so vuch V Al paced him there um but at the same time like the two of them I know that Kendall our friend Kendall Gill is a big proponent of playing the double bigs Twin Towers type typ of approach to the

Offense um I’m not really a fan of given the Bulls rotation the in the lineup there but at the same time if we can get this production from each of them and they’ve got two very different skill sets too um you know that’s that’s a very good thing I will say specifically

I thought a lot of the success that the Bulls saw in overtime was because of vuvi getting more touches uh he made some very good play plays made a really nice assist to kuso and even when he didn’t get the main assist he got a hockey assist a

Couple times like they the offense just flows better to me when it’s going through vuvi frequently well he helps with the spacing obviously with not only his ability to pick and pop but his ability to you know control the elbows and you know just read like you said

He’s a connecting piece so he had four assists in 30 minutes you know there’s a long-standing joke on the beat it was probably created by me but you know it ties into Drummond always saying he believes the star in this league that you know in Andre Drummond’s mind he’s

Better than nicoa vuich which is not a bad thing so jokingly to prolong your theme uh Drummond posted his statline at 22 minutes or 23 minutes vich posted his in 30 minutes so but no look both played very well Drummond has obviously uh put up some huge stats uh starting for V and

It’s credit to him I mean you know he’s uh he’s just taking its opportunity to run with it also three for three from the line last night U which is good great for him uh he did not have an assist which speaks to your point that

To me the the offense just flows better with v they’re just different players but you know Drummond is a very able Defender you can do a little bit more with him in space he’s got quick hands look the Bulls are are lucky to have both those guys because they both are

Playing at a high level this season I think we are likely to see uh both vuich an LaVine back in the starting lineup maybe as soon as Wednesday Billy seemed to indicate that once you play guys 36 minutes and 30 minutes in a game off the bench that you

Might as well start them it’s certainly Donovan was operating under a minute’s restriction though a very loose one um with both those players in Monday night’s game uh but without saying definitively they would both start on Wednesday I I would not be surprised if we see both of them in the starting

Lineup on Wednesday that obvious ly sends Drummond back to the bench he has uh averaged nearly 18 rebounds a game in the seven game stretch in which he started um certainly he believes that he can get 10 rebounds in 10 minutes played I do not doubt the fact that he can um

But he’s gonna have to kind of adjust to that role with that second unit rather than the first team U with that and hopefully his production doesn’t take a dip there was a moment in the Drummond did the walk-off interview with Mark Chow and Stacy King at the end of the

Game uh and Stacy’s said something to the effect of you know people Forgot About Dre and what he can do and Drummond’s response was I didn’t go anywhere I’m right here um that’s kind of who he is yeah yeah I’ve said this on our broadcast before I mean he’s and

He’s told me that even when he’s averaging 13 to 14 minutes his goal is to get a double double so forget the double digit rebounds he’s trying to get double digit points in that time too so yeah I mean look he he’s played at a high level um they are incredibly

Players but he’s impacted positively several of these wins in B’s absence but I agree with you I personally would like to see them go back to LaVine and and and vuvi in that starting lineup um I understand with how long Zach’s been out bringing him off the bench initially but

Like you said if they’re playing 30 and 36 minutes in an overtime game you need to you need to go back to your regular starting lineup credit to these guys who have held down the fort and they have played better in the starting lineup

Um but I I think you you put out your best five players and then kind of Shuffle the rotation from there yeah and that’s what we saw in the overtime period I don’t believe there was a single substitution made um in overtime for the Bulls and so you know certainly

Vuvi and LaVine played the entirety of that uh FIV minute stretch uh another bright spot for the Bulls Kobe white um you know certainly 26 27 points six rebounds five assists uh he took 19 shots which you know is is is a little bit high for him but I’m glad he got

Those up I thought that and we can get into this a little bit the end of regulation got bogged down with D rozan I thought Kobe being aggressive in overtime was actually like turn that table to turn that page um to get involved in the offense um in that

Period and it’s really good to see his rebound totals are sneakily getting pretty high uh Kobe is is is very good rebounder yeah he’s always been a decent a defensive rebound run because he’s got positional size but um look man you know a big storyline going into lavine’s

Return was can Kobe white continue being aggressive and continue you know kind of his Ascension well 276 and five in 42 minutes taking 19 shots to lavine’s eight I mean you tell me the answer and I I I asked Billy this on Sunday it was a sleepy practice at The Advocate Center

Only a few media people around um Kobe unfortunately was taking a cold B so I haven’t been able to catch up with him uh yet about this but people forget like you know as the two most long-standing members of this organization those two have a ton of chemistry together I mean

And there was times I know D rozan staggered a lot with the second unit when Kobe was part of it but Zach would sometimes stagger with that second unit as well so you know Zach playing alongside Kobe I don’t see this being this huge thing obviously with lavine’s

Minutes going back to regular if they do and his shot attempts you have to believe will be creeping up there’ll be a little bit less opportunity but those two can play alongside each other fine and those two enjoy playing with each other they have a very close relationship they have a ton of

Chemistry from their shared years together that preceded the current coaching staff and managerial regime so I don’t see any reason why Kobe can’t keep being who he is and and when I asked Billy that on Sunday he said the same thing we just want Kobe to be who

He’s been and you’ve seen it at least in these first two games with Lavine uh all right let’s dive into my my biggest concern is that was how they closed regulation and and Billy Donovan said this as much too he felt like the end of regulation um there were a couple

Moments there with d rozan on the Baseline that you know he maybe either should have not taken an extra dribble passed it a little bit sooner um my concern with this team and listen they won a close game regardless of who the opponent is so that’s a plus however

There are far too many times we saw last season and we saw it again Monday night that when it comes crunch time close game whether it’s tied down by two down by one down by three situation that the ball gets stuck in ISO to D rozan far

Too often now he has a long track record including with the bulls of hitting game winning shots hitting clutch shots so I believe a certain amount of of uh leeway has to be applied here right like you you have to give a player of his caliber

And of his history um some Runway to say hey you know what if you feel like in this moment this is the right shot for you the right approach for you you got to understand it however those possessions at the end of regulation just they weren’t it that that just it

Just was not it was just not good basketball there was very little movement away from the ball the ball stuck with d rozan he got stuck on the Baseline just not taking good shot attempts and I just I I as a basketball fan and as a bulls fan I just want to

See more in those moments of a designed play they run such efficient offense at times uh at other points in the game in which there there’s movement off ball there’s screens off ball there’s clearly a design play with a pick and roll variation of some kind but then of a

Sudden you get into these clutch situation and it’s four guys away from the ball one guy ISO trying to be the hero and I just like that is not to me winning basketball at times is it the right play yes absolutely they’re going to be times because of the spacing and

The matchup and how deadly D rozan is in the mid-range and how sneaky he is a getting guys to foul him that yes there are going to be times in which that is the right play I don’t want this to sound like it’s a never ever set in

Stone type situation but those plays that were run at end the regulation just did did not get the job done they were not they were not smart plays they were not good plays yeah no field goals over the last 339 of Regulation and it

Doesn’t even need to be a play or a pick and roll variation it just needs to be a read and react offense which is basically what the Bulls mostly run and you know it’s hard to read and react when a guy’s just dribbling with his

Head down and uh you know the as you already alluded this but the the the contradiction almost with the Mar is that he’s had so much success in those roles that it’s hard to quibble when he when he grinds it to a halt but last night was an example where he grinded it

To a halt with limited success and it’s weird because you know we celebrated the way thear played in LaVine and bvi’s absence you know kind of seating to the others early getting off the ball assist totals up and then Tak it over in the fourth quarter so it’s a kind of a catch

22 he tried to take over the fourth quarter last night and he failed the difference is like I said they had over 25 assists over 50% shooting until that final stretch and then just 0 for five lot of empty possessions down the stretch Stacy was hammering it on the

Broadcast um just not a good look so they got the victory it would have been a lot worse if Terry roier had hit that last shot in regulation which we have not yet alluded to Zack lavine’s strong contest on that shot another example Zach good defense um but yeah dear’s uh

You know we we got to be careful a little bit ourselves he can’t celebrate the way he plays and then also criticize it which is kind of what we’re doing here um but I think even dear would recognize when he gets down in that Baseline area that’s not where he’s as

Efficient in isolation as he is in that you know elbow top in the key area yeah and he still led the team with seven assists in that game last night so it’s three Ste and three steals defensively so here we go you know yeah yeah um so

That that’s that that was my biggest concern from that in certainly big picture when you get um LaVine back in the starting line lineup and his minutes are essentially the same minutes as D rozan Vu and Kobe um it’s been well documented both on this podcast and my

Twitter feed that that lineup in the first 19 games um stretch was absolutely horrible and one of the worst in the league and so now that we’re trending to being those players playing very similar minutes at the same time on the floor um then like what are we going

To get out of that like we we can’t revert back to what we saw the first 19 games and that’s been obviously the the biggest question mark when Zach came back from injury and was healthy after he is off the minutes restriction is what is that offense going to look like

When those guys are on the floor at the same time um so the big picture concern over the next like the next week or two weeks that’s what I’m going to be looking for is how well well now that they’re all eventually going to be starting together how well are they

Integrated as an offense together verse how the offense flowed during that 17 games in which Zach was out and certainly Vu was out part of that too yeah um go ahead I was gonna I was gonna move on to another topic so if you have

Yeah yeah I kind of figured you were I was I had one other quick topic but you go first because I wonder if it’s the same topic though oh I was going to kind of preview the Ring of Honor what we’re going to get later this we oh then I’ll

Just quickly say you know I mentioned the Bulls moving into ninth in the standings what’s crazy I don’t know if you looked at them today so they’re pretty far back because they’ve obviously dug themselves a big hole they’re they’re five games behind the Knicks who are an eighth but have you

Looked at the the flipping Eastern Conference standings Miami Heat Orlando Magic Indiana Pacers Cleveland Cavaliers New York Knicks all 21 and 15 so not only are the Bulls five games behind the eighth seed they’re five games behind the fourth seed and those two games they kicked away late they also have a uh

Jimmy Butler buzzer beater in there um man if they were just two or three games better they would be in the thick of this um so missed opportunities but again I keep coming back to this and then we can move into the Ring of Honor huge opportunity this month even with 10

Of 15 on the road they their schedule was ranked the easiest in the NBA as of opposing winning percentage December 31st now obviously that fluctuates by the day but entering that first January 1st of New Year the Bulls face the easiest schedule for the entire month so

You know they have an opportunity to keep climbing up those uh standings or at least closing that gap between you know them and the three through eight seeds yeah and certainly to your point earlier about you know halberton which it’s certainly good for the Pacers and I

Think the league overall that it looks like it’s not a significant injury but there’s still going to be it sounds like a couple week stretch in which he’s not going to play so there’s an opportunity for the um Bulls to move up a little bit

In that regard I mean the ball of the East is all bunched together and you know I can’t definitively say of those teams you just mentioned who’s going to end up the four seed who’s going to end up the nine seed who’s going end up the 10 seed when this season’s over there’s

Still obviously a month less than a month till the trade deadline uh happens and certainly the Knicks especially but we know that Toronto is very engaged and may end up making another trade um those rosters aren’t going to look the same as they do today on February 9th uh but at

The same time the those teams are all kind of tough to pick who’s going to end up where lot A lot’s going to happen in the next uh you know 50 some games or 40 some games left in the the NBA season um Okay so we’ve got the uh Ring of Honor

Uh ceremony there’s a private uh Gala on Thursday uh and then the halftime ceremony on Friday of the Warriors game uh Steve cerr is obviously coach of the Warriors He’s going to be here for for that and I think that’s ultimately why they chose uh to do it during that

Warriors game um how excited are for you for what’s going to happen later this week I mean we’re going to see a lot of bulls Legends in one place uh for probably many of them the only time that they’ve been together one of the few times that they’ve all been together in

One place at one time to be honored how how excited are you to kind of like see everybody that you’ve covered over the last uh 30 years and some other Legends within the organization and um it’s got to be kind of like a pretty kind of cool moment yeah it’s

It’s uh anytime you celebrate this franchise is past it’s fun I mean it hasn’t happened very often to your point obviously you know big names like Michael Jordan has been busy running the the Hornets um and Scotty’s you know kind of divorce with the with the bulls as an ambassador has been well

Documented but you know hopefully as many of those guys as possible come back it’s still kind of in flux as to who’s going to be there or not um but uh you know I was there working for the Chicago Tribune at the time both when they celebrated red cerr shortly

Before his passing and also the 20th anniversary that first title team in in 2011 and anytime you know anytime Michael comes back the United Center it’s just this electric atmosphere in the air I mean that’s royalty right there and uh you know whether or not Michael’s there obviously that would

Make it way more special but regardless of who’s back when you gather that many group and that’s you know moving off the Dynasty now we’re getting into you know other greats and other huge members of the of the franchises past um in this first inaugural class it’s just it’s

Just gonna be a fun night and um you know I don’t know how long that halftime seron it’s gonna be I know the league I’m sure they’ve asked league for extra time because they they have for yeah you’ve got you you know you’re on the broadcast side so you got the rundown I

Mean they they they uh that that’s they got a lot of people to honor it halftime and you know the fact Steve’s going to be there it makes it cool so um look it’s going to be a big night and uh looking forward to it both the Thursday

And the Friday thing yeah so just for everybody’s awareness uh NBC Sports Chicago we will Air the halftime ceremony in its entirety UNR un uninterrupted uh for the fans we don’t want you to miss a single second of what’s going to happen during that halftime ceremony uh yeah it’s going to

Be a little bit longer halftime most standard halim NBA game are 16 minutes uh this is going to run over 20 uh before it’s said and done clearly they’re they have some setup to do when you have that many people one spot whether it’s a little stage or or chairs

Um so there’s there’s some setup involved I’m told the actual ceremony itself is going to be 15 to 20 minutes long um as we know in these situations though when the speeches start and you hear from certain people things can easily run a little bit

Long so we we will see what I think we’re alled decided uh number one to see if Michael is going to be there because as as you said it’s not often he makes an appearance at the United Center in a public forum like this um I I distinctly

Remember The Red cerr Knight and just on how how wonderful that evening was for everybody in attendance there uh it was it was really a special night to honor red and his his legacy both on the basketball side and the broadcasting side of this team um and so

I’m hoping we get that something similar on Friday um during the game I know everybody’s excited I know the tickets are hard to come by for that game which as you would expect uh for you on Thursday this is not a public event but they are having a a media session at Red

Carpet Gala at the UC on Thursday again not open to the public and then they’re having a private dinner um how excited are you just to kind of like talk to these people you haven’t talked to in many many years you maybe keep up with via text but see him in person again

Yeah that’ll be great I mean obviously that was early in my career so it was pretty impressionable moment uh for me cover in that second 3p team you know obviously I’m G to give them their space I mean I’m not gonna approach anybody unless they approach me because they’re

Going to be so focused on catching up with each other and that’s how it should be you know but uh certainly it’s special to see all those guys coming into the United Center um and you know I just value that that that aspect to my career and being the witness to history

I always said like I objectively had many moments during that time where I would pull myself out of my body and just say you know remember that you’re covering Sports history uh you you knew you were especially um with that last dance documentary you know Trail on that team

In 9798 we all knew they were there we didn’t know when it was going to air we didn’t know it was going to air in a global pandemic back in 1998 but uh we knew that it was being documented for history because that’s what it was six

Championships in eight years come on man I mean that’s just ridiculous so I remember more the happy times than the drama obviously there’s drama been distilled in the last dance and now there’s like oh who’s gonna show up who’s not GNA show up there’s a lot of

There’s a lot of Happiness a lot of lot of light moments that’s what winning does so uh hopefully that’ll be celebrated over Thursday and Friday is the the happy memories and what I’m also looking forward to is this isn’t a one-time thing for the Ring of Honor

They are going to do this every two years and so for the younger generation who maybe only knows Michael and that dynasty era from YouTube and from talking to older relatives and siblings um when Jem and Derek eventually get inducted into the Ring of Honor like for

Them I’m looking forward to those nights for them too because that that team didn’t win a championship um but I I think what Joe and Derek and that that era of bulls you know 2008 2015 um hold a very special Plate Place in a lot of bulls fans hearts and so

When we get to that point of that induction um whether it’s in 2026 or 2028 or 2030 they’re G to do it every two years I’m looking forward to that and certainly once we get past this in initial first class every year is not going to be 15 to 20 people it’s going

To be much much smaller much more intimate with one or two maybe three individuals uh to be inducted um and I’m also looking very forward to Norm van leer uh getting inducted and his family being there and honoring Norm’s uh Legacy and as some of you know Norm was

Our initial Bulls analyst when we started uh Comcast sportset back in uh 2004 I worked very closely uh with Norm um during his tenure with us uh a very fun individual to be around huge passion with everything he did so I’m very much looking forward to Norm getting honored

And his family kind of being there in the moment um for that because that absolutely has to come and if if he’s not honored in 2026 I’m gonna be honestly upset that that occurs so um that’s that’s more to come and we’re gon to get every couple years uh with this

So um yeah KY good luck this week it should be fun like you get to catch up with all these people from the past it it’s certainly uh the Warriors game itself and even the Rockets game to a lesser extent on Wednesday is going to

Be a little bit on the back page uh with the Ring of Honor stuff coming up but it’s a very huge stretch of time for Bulls fans uh we are less than a month from the trade deadline that is going to be something that we are all watching

For over these next four and a half weeks uh certainly if anything breaks uh regarding the Bulls casc will be all over it on Twitter SLX casj hoop we’ll have a uh when the big deal happens if it happens we are absolutely having an emergency plls Talk podcast probably a

Live stream at at that point depending on what time of day or or night that the news breaks uh with that so um for KC I’m Kevin Anderson this has been the Bulls Talk podcast brought to you by Toyota Let’s Go Places please like And subscribe and let us know what you think

  1. The main problem is Billy Donovan. Dude is either too scared or too rigid to make the necessary adjustments for the team truly becoming successful.

  2. Zach and Coby used to be a thing before vuc and demar. They were not winning much but they were having great games together ! Check out that hornets bulls game when they scored 16 points in 49 seconds.
