Lauri Markkanen or Tyus Jones the top trade target for the New Orleans Pelicans | NBA trade rumors

Yesterday we looked at the positions the Pelicans should be trying to upgrade and today it’s time to talk about the names and I have some great trade targets for you as well as some surprises let’s get to the names in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s Go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans and NBA part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day

Have subscribed which is an insane thing I’ll show you something about that in the second segment to open that one up um a little behind the scenes stuff just my way of thanking you for everything it’s really cool just speaks to your passion about the team today’s episode

Of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 money line bet it’s 150 bucks if your team wins visit fanduel.com lockon to get started so in yesterday’s show we went over three

Positions that I think the Pelicans need to try and up upgrade a rim protector and rebounding big man okay we’ll look at the bigs in the second segment of today’s show I also think look more shooting on the wing is never a bad thing you can add that there there’s not

Really a ton of guys you could necessarily go and get with that that make a ton of sense for the Pelicans we’ll touch on one or two in the third segment here along with just guys they could sign Dennis shuder we’ll see but I also think they need to upgrade the

Guard position particularly the backup point guard spot and I think that’s the number one area in my opinion that they should be looking to go and get so a reason I want them to sign a backup point guard it helps you twofold right it can help you both on offense and

Defense if they sign a rim protecting big I don’t think that helps you offensively so if you’re going to spend resources I’d like to try and get kind of The Best of Both Worlds with everything and that’s why my number one target with this is tus Jones of the

Washington Wizards backup point guard that can come off the bench and just give you everything you kind of need and on a Wizards team that looks garbage and is bad he’s readily going to be available 13 points per game this season 5.6 assists he’s shooting the ball well

From three he’s a decent to above average three-point shooter in his career shooting 44% from Deep on almost four attempts per game right this guy started but you can bring him off the bench previously he came off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies was kind of their change up give relief to John

Morant organize your offense play good defense and call it a day in limited minutes he can definitely do that I think for the New Orleans Pelicans and it’s funny Richard of Mavs draft who co-hosts the locked on NBA draft podcast you should listen to that you know DM me

Literally as I just finished recording my show yesterday and was like hey what about tus Jones for the Pelicans doesn’t he make sense and I literally just recorded a show saying backup point guard is the number one area that I want them to go for and tus Jones was going

To be the number one guy that we talked about in today’s show tells you other people think that this is a fit two for New Orleans right I think it makes a ton of sense to bring him in for probably not as many assets as you would think

And let him just do his thing right this way you compare him with Brandon Ingram or CJ or Zion and give the other two stars a rest and you can still have enough shot creation for other players on this roster sometimes when they run one of the you know big three or two

With a big three even you need a little more shot Creation in there particularly when they just run one of the guys tus Jones can give that to you without really playing very heavy minutes or like sinking too many resources into that spot the problem I think with tyus

Jones is finding a trade that works is kind of tough he’s making $14 million this year on an expiring deal right so it could be a rental there’s always a risk with that you know but the Pelicans are missing some mid-tier salary when you look at guys that they could kind of

Move that match this right it’s it’s Larry Nance Jr but you need him as your backup big it’s herb Jones but you’re not going to move him in this sort of deal you’re not going to try and make this trade too big because one of the

Things I don’t want to see them do is downgrade the center position at all I’d rather just stick with jonis Val chunis we’ll talk more about this in the next segment I think he’s been good I do think someone like where is he on that Washington Wizards team um Daniel

Gafford is a big downgrade so I don’t want them to see this be a bigger trade of tyus Jones Daniel gaff something like that for I don’t know you know someone like Larry Nance Jr and and Jonas Val chunis and Kyra Lewis or something like you could probably put in you know

Someone like um dlon Wright in there too kind of guard wi but H this trade starts to get unwieldly very quick and I don’t love that and that’s where I think this would be kind of tough it probably need to be a third a three- team deal and

We’re not going to try and kind of figure that out because look that’s impossible to kind of predict but I do think tyus Jones makes makes so much sense for this Pelicans team being able to organize the offense when he comes in with one of the starters and a couple of

Other backup guys create some shot creation and then give you good point of attack defense so you’re upgrading both your offense and defense and I think that’s an important thing the other guy that I think could be very getable here is Alex Caruso of the Chicago Bulls look

They’re they’re going to try and trade and should be having a fire sale here as they’ve not been good now he has they have played a little bit better recently but it there’s there’s no future there so Alex Caruso is very getable I think you know a package of Kyro Lewis Jr Naji

Marshall and pick works the problem is you’re still in the luxury tax and is he going to be that big of a Difference Maker for your team I’m not necessarily sure that he would right this is a guy who’s averaging 10 points two and a half

Assists per game this year he’s a decent enough shooter from three though not nearly as consistent as you would like he is shooting 42.4% on almost three uh four attempts per game this season shot 36% last season 33 the year before that so there’s a little bit of a streakiness to

It but great point of attack defense can run your offenses we’ve seen with some of his times with the Lakers but he’s truly a defensive guy I think if you just want to upgrade kind of the Jose Alvarado minutes Alex Caruso is the guy to do that gives you better size gives

You someone who you know has kind of been there before in some big moments that’s an important thing I think but is it worth paying the luxury tax to upgrade to Alex K Russo as opposed to just dumping Kyra in a salary dump and I’m not exactly sure when it comes to

That the next two I want to look at are guys that you’re all going to like and I know these names have come up a lot and they’re from the Utah Jazz that’s Colin saon and Jordan Clarkson Clarkson’s hard he’s making almost $24 million this year

Like there’s not really a way to figure out a trade that makes a ton of sense without like eight players coming in and out and that’s just not the type of thing that happens midseason but seon does work you could trade Larry n Jr and Kyra Lewis plus probably one or two

First round picks for Colin seon but is he the right fit for this team and I think that’s kind of the big question when it comes to him there’s there’s things to like right you know he’s more of a scoring guard we’ve seen him kind

Of be that guy that can go out and get you buckets he’d be coming off the bench so you’re looking at adding him as kind of a six-man Off the Bench here but he’s been a streaky three-point shooter in his career his shot shooting 34% this

Season not great shot 39% last year okay but in his final year in Cleveland shot 24% from three you know that’s not a particularly good number he’s not a guy that sets up other guys either you’re looking at for him as a bucket getter but I’ve said they don’t really need

That kind of six-man scoring Off the Bench you know you can run CJ kind of in that role while have him as a starter and get the best of both worlds there and that’s what I’d rather see them do his defense isn’t particularly great either so I think you’re losing

Something there too and then You’ need to figure out the backup big band spot which is something that’s still an open question even though lar you know lar Jor is playing well but if you get rid of him in this deal then what and that’s a problem you also might need to include

A young player in this for Sexton 2 and I don’t really love that what I like about is partially his age right he’s young he’s just TW just turned 25 he could be a CJ replacement going forward in the future especially if his three-point shot gets better so that’s

An option there I think another guy that people have mentioned is TJ McConnell you could trade Kyro Lewis and najy Marshall for him right maybe a pick maybe not really but you know he makes sense he’s getable not really a pure point or a shooter but you could get

Minutes on this team he’s still slightly undersized it doesn’t get you out of the luxury tax I don’t think he’s that much of an upgrade that you really need to go with that way but of all these guards which one do you like the best is there

One of them that stands out to you let me know in the comments Down Below on YouTube is if you think this is one of the guys I think it’s tyus Jones I think it’s tyus Jones that’s who I’d be really trying to go for but it likely needs to

Be a three team deal to make something like that work let’s get into the big men including the guy you all want me to talk about Larry marinin we’ll bring him up look at a couple other guys here too coming up in the next segment in today’s episode of Locked on

All right let’s get into the guy that you want Larry Markin I I look I knew saved him for this segment here there was a reason let’s get into him with the Utah Jazz kind of building off of the two jazz players that we just talked about he’s going to be expensive he’s

Going to be expensive and there’s one or two things that make you go huh but this is a very good player an Allstar last year in Utah should be an All-Star again this year right he’s averaging 23 and a half points per game 8.6 rebounds 1.6 assists he’s shooting 39% from three on

Over eight attempts per game can get to the line at times he did last year six times per game he’s up to five he’s at five per game this year he is a very talented offensive player with good size that can play a couple of different

Positions 7 foot right so you can get the salary work and one of the reasons why we talk salary And Trades is the salary needs to match so if you’re sending out $20 million you more or less need to bring back $20 million for the Pelicans in this case with a few

Exceptions which we don’t really need to get into because it doesn’t impact things that much right so you can get this deal done with Larry n Jr Kyo Lewis Jr and Nai Marshall you likely need to include a young player though that salary could work if you put in three

Four first round picks maybe that’s enough but you likely need to include someone like Dyson Daniels or Jordan Hawkins in this deal you know and take out maybe Nai that can mean this is going to be really expensive Dyson plus three first round picks that’s essentially four first round picks right

Hawkins Dyson plus three picks that’s five picks right this gets expensive really quickly and one thing to consider with this trade when you’re sending out say three players for one in Market in you have to fill out the rest of your roster so not only are you adding salary

On with marketing salary depending on how this goes you could maybe trim a little bit but you still then need to go sign some people to fill out the rest of your roster maybe like Matt Ryan someone else right but that’s still putting you deep into the luxury tax with it now I

Think it would be worth it for a guy like low marketing right without giving up and this is important yonas Valen chunis you know he is a good shooter and on volume this fixes a lot of the Court spacing issues at times that the Pelicans could have with Zion Williamson

Out there I think he could bring so much to the table and would make this offense one of the scariest in the league if you’re if you have some lineup out there with you know Brandon Ingram CJ McCullum Zion marinin and like even herb Jones or

Like Trey Murphy would be a lot of fun in a lineup like that right that all makes a ton of sense to me with things that you could do so I think there’s a ton of potential for this team to be super scary and good with a guy like

Marinin in here I have a question for you though if you don’t trade Jonas V chunis does marinin start does he start where does he fit in the starting lineup now he’s not a center that’s why I asked that question right you know four of your starters are entrenched CJ Brandon

Ingram Zion Valen chunis does marinan start over herb Jones you can play him as a small forward he plays that a good bit for the Utah Jazz you know he rarely plays center when you look at the numbers this season he’s played center for like under 30 uh under 30

Possessions really this year there’s not enough to really say that you can kind of run him in there without valent chunis you know you can maybe go small with him and Zion as your two bigs I think that remains to be seen and that could potentially spell Doom for this

Team particularly defensively but the offensive fit makes so much sense that I think maybe you just say screw that and stop worrying about it right you know so could you bring him off the bench maybe would he do that I’m not sure he started the majority of his NBA career you know

Including basically the past like four seasons you know other than his basically every year other than his oh sorry I’m looking at a different guy here that’s looking at John Collins not marinin marinin I think started yeah the majority of his games like in his career

Other than his last season in Chicago he started every game the past three years now I don’t know if he’s going to come off the bench do you even want to bring him off the bench that’s kind of the question the fit gets a little bit weird

There I think since he’s not a center but I think you just kind of figure that out are you comfortable with how expensive he’s going to be essentially for first round picks for him that’s what I think it would take let me know in the comments down below let a go to

Another big man right Jared Allen been the rumored one makes a ton of sense but here’s my thing it’s what I talked about with Rim protection the big man they’ve been good with Jonas valunas the defense has been good with Jonas Valen chunis I’ve see a lot of people being like we

Need rebounding the Pelicans need rebounding no they don’t no they don’t outside of one or two losses that you’ve seen and we can’t say that’s the norm when it’s not the case right this is the 11th best defensive rebounding team in the league so far this season they’ve

Been good at this you know they’ve been good when it comes to securing those type of uh type of things right they have one of the best defenses in the league you know they you need to necessarily improve on that side of the ball I’ve said I don’t think they truly

Need a lot of Rim protection when you just don’t let guys into the paint if you were to get tus Jones or Alex Caruso you’re even further limiting paint Touches for your opponent because they’re better at the point of attack so you need even less Rim protection there

I think this is addressing something that would be nice to have but his lanap is a luxury that I don’t think is worth investing tons and tons of resources in so yeah if Jared Allen’s the right guy and you think he’s the right iy go and

Get him but I think it’s just better to upgrade elsewhere because they’ve been good with valent chunis and this way you can still keep Larry Nance Jr and you get kind of The Best of Both Worlds because Larry Nance Jr has been playing at an exceedingly high level recently

And his defense has been really really good for this team so I wouldn’t really make any changes at the center spot unless it’s like adding a big man like low Markin where you just get him in addition to everything here final guy I want to mention here in this segment

Isaiah Stewart beef stew one of the better names trading for him is a little bit complicated because he signed an extension onto his rookie deal which ends after this year the extension goes into effect next season makes 5.2 million this year he makes 15 million next year to match the salary he counts

As 5.2 coming back but then also needs to or sorry counts for like 11.2 coming back but 5.2 outgoing that’s a little awkward and kind of weird one of the things is he makes $5.2 million this year if you trade him straight up for Larry n Jr which works you know you get

Out of the luxury tax I think in this case but he makes $15 million next season I don’t love that his production has declined almost every single year he’s not an elite rebounder so he doesn’t fix that right he’s definitely undersized here too with uh being 68 I

Believe so he’s undersized plays bigger certainly plays bigger than that but his rebounding is not like overwhelming and his block percentage basically the percentage of shots blocked while he’s out there on the court has gone down every year it doesn’t look particularly great right now essentially saying his

Rim protection has gotten worse I think if you could get him for very little sure but 15 million doll next year if that means you kind of have to make a decision sooner rather than later on a guy like CJ McCollum I want to do it because of Isaiah Stewart so that’s a

Guy that thinks sounds great doesn’t make a ton of sense what about another name though from the Detroit Pistons I want to look at a couple of like few other guys that are a little kind of in nebulous here Jaden Ivy anybody what about Miles Turner Dennis schruder let’s

Talk about those coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though today’s episode is brought to you by better help look it’s the new year and we’re all trying to make resolutions and be the best version of of ourselves right we’re trying to change ourselves but what if

You just need to kind of expand on what you’re doing right you’ve already made progress in your life maybe you just need to tweak things a little bit that’s where better help can come in you know a lot of people think of therapy as something you need after you experience

Major trauma what if you’re just trying to be the best version of yourself and build on the skills that you already have whether that’s getting better with coping skills learning how to set stronger boundaries all of those things are something that therapy can help you do and just empower you so if you’re

Thinking about starting therapy give better help a try I’ve used it I love it because it’s entirely online it’s convenient flexible and suited to your schedule I don’t have time to drive to a doctor’s office sit in a waiting room go see them which I like but then come home

And do all that it’s just so much time I’d rather be able to just hop online talk to the therapist grow as a person and then go back to doing what I was doing and that’s what betterhelp does so celebrate the progress you’ve already made become a better version of yourself visit betterhelp.com

Locked on MBA today to get 10% off your first month that’s betterhelp.com locked onba 10% off your first month over betterhelp.com and thank you for making locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day again we are the number one Pelicans podcast 9,000 subscribers join that group let’s grow the channel the

Number one Pelicans podcast come to y’all like nobody else is we’re giving you all of the breakdown on the trade targets we will have a live show tonight after the Golden State Warriors game I’m looking forward to that hanging out with y’all maybe we’ll do the little bit like

Bonus segment at the end where I answer your questions and everything but today we are looking at trade targets here by the way Saint season over black and gold is all done what do they do next Ross Jackson host of locked on Saints going to be breaking it all down for you over

At the locked on Saints podcast subscribe wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube make sure he is your second listen today and be coming every day listen Monday through Friday to lockon Pelicans or just I don’t know listen two days a week if you listen one

Day a week again these shows build off one another I want to look at CJ McCullum in the Friday show Thursday is going to be recapping the game from Wednesday Friday I want to look at C.J McCollin because he’s been shooting lights out lately how his role has

Changed there’s some numbers behind it that I want to share with you that’s coming up in Friday’s episode of Locked on Pelicans but right now let’s look at a couple of other names what name that got thrown out at me a lot which kind of surprised me was we just talked about I

Is Stewart from the Detroit Pistons was J Jaden Ivy so I get it I get why people bring him up I’m going to say right now though this isn’t going to happen I love it I like Jaden idy Ivy coming into the league into the draft fifth overall pick

Just two years ago right and he’s kind of been underwhelming didn’t shoot particularly great his rookie year isn’t shooting great now coming off the bench after starting basically all of last season averaging 13 points per game 3.2 assists but he’s shooting just 32% from Deep that’s not a good number right he

Is a still slasher getting to the line a good bit for what he’s doing you know four times per game so the Detroit Pistons who as I’m recording this only have three wins I saw they were up on the Kings but I think the kings came back you know maybe just need some

Changes but if you’re a bad team you don’t just give up on a guy you drafted with the fifth overall pick yeah they have Kade Cunningham they just drafted Thompson right they also have Killian haes who’s a former lottery pick too there’s a lot of depth at the guard

Position or not even depth right just a bunch of young guards here but I still think you can play all of these guys and develop them and figure out what you have you know even though they’re not good and again there’s kind of a log Jam of guards for the Pistons jayen Ivy’s

Getting the fourth most minutes on that team that’s not a dude that they just trade he would also be very very expensive are you willing to invest a first round pick or probably two for Jaden ivy when he’s underperforming from when he was drafted I’m not willing to

Do that you know I think he could be good but you give up two first round picks for a guy that was one a first round pick I don’t think so not just yet here when he hasn’t really proven things in the NBA I think that’s kind of the

Direction the Pistons would want to go with it I just don’t see a trade happening there like that just doesn’t really make any sense to me same thing for a long rumored name and that’s Miles Turner coming to New Orleans the piss uh the Pacers are good this year they’re

Surprised now they’re dealing with a scary hamstring injury to Tyrese halberton but luckily it’s not that serious though he’s going to miss some time but they are 21 and 15 Turner has played really good ball the past two seasons you know he’s been a long time rumored trade Target for the Pelicans

And this is someone that I’ve said like no don’t want not interested whatsoever in until last year when I was like yeah I see it it makes a ton of sense I think he’s good now I thought a lot of his blocks in the past were empty empty

Stats essentially filler stats now his his defense has gotten good he’s gotten better offensively he shoots the three ball pretty well can space the court a little bit for you but he’s not an elite rebounder at all that’s kind of the problem there but you know what if

That’s the piece that you think is missing and It just fits better offensively bring him onto New Orleans except the Pistons are good they want to be competitive they’re not going to just give him up basically it sounds like he’s untradeable at this point or ungettable I should say so I just don’t

See anything happening with with Miles Turner coming to New Orleans you know another name that someone had said which I actually really appreciated someone bringing up this one was kind of unexpected is Dennis shuder guard who isn’t really doing much right now other than you know playing a little bit for

The Toronto Raptors you know he’s a guy that makes sense and I don’t know why I put sign but maybe like trade for him instead because he’s out there he’s getable for this team you know he’s done some things well his salary is you know 122.5 million this season I think he’s

Getable for this team does he make a ton of sense at that Mark no but you’d be able to get him for very cheap and I think that’s kind of one of the bigger things here that you could get them for cheap but you’d still need to give up

Someone like I don’t even know what salaries would work with that maybe Larry ant Jr you could probably get a package of like Dyson Daniels and K for him but do you really want to do that for Jenna shuder he can give you some scoring Off the Bench you know you can

Bring him in that way though he started a lot this season for Toronto he can definitely run your offense right we’ve seen that with the Lakers with some of the other teams that he’s been on at times a bit of an underrated guard played really well in FBA for Germany

This season sure he’s a guy that I think could make a ton of sense I just don’t think that that’s like the biggest need for this team and other ways to go with it don’t forget again they’re in the luxury text that’s why we talked about it in yesterday’s show that’s going to

Kind of frame a lot of this is Dennis shuder a guy you want to pay the luxury tax for like no definitely not especially kind of at that salary they also need to kind of figure out what they want to do with Matt Ryan and maybe

The when you look at some of this is the move just to kind of dump salary and keep the team are any of the names we’ve really talked about outside of lowry Markin and like a significant significant difference maker I think tyus Jones would help the team certainly

But is he like the guy that makes you a title Contender probably not marinin does maybe not TI Jones but again I think he’d be my number one trade Target here but if you didn’t listen to yesterday’s show go listen to that about where they are with the salary cap

That’s important too and something that you need to factor in when it comes to kind of thinking about these trades because it’s going to impact what the team does at the trade deadline so let me know who your top trade Target is do any of these names speak to you none of

Them do you just want them to stamp Pat and kind of grow as a team I think that’s an option too let me know in the comments Down Below on YouTube We’re 9,000 of you thank you again subscribed that is an insane number for the second or smallest second smallest Market in

But could Jarrett Allen or Myles Turner be a bigger difference maker? Or another guard like Colin Sexton?

  1. Jarrett Allen would be a great fit but would it take a lot of assets to get him. The pelicans should get Jamal McGee. He kinda like Nance in a since but he's a lil better defensively and athletically. He veteran plus the pelicans won't have to give up much to get him. We can trade Kiara

  2. I know trade talk is great for ratings, but why don’t we just slow down and let this team figure out how to play with each other we start trading people and then our team falls apart. I think we’re playing great. Sometimes it takes time to gel with each other. Maybe that’s just the problem that we get all trade happy and teams don’t ever get a chance to figure out how to play with each other.

  3. I like Jonas but I think Jarrett Allen is an upgrade. Allen more athletic, plays faster, better defensively, better rebounder and can score too. Jonas a plays too slow for this young pels team to be truly successful. Jonas might help pels get to the playoffs but if we're talking about championship, we need a center that good offensively and defensely.. Allen is that center.

  4. Dude, Jose's jersey is on your wall! Serious question: If Jose was 6'3" is your analysis the same? He's a tenacious defender and the definition of an energy guy off the bench who has demonstrated the ability to change the flow of the game. Plus, he's shooting 38% from three this year and the team and the fans love him. I get that he's small, but you may be discounting the totality of his contributions coming off the bench and what taking him out of the equation could do to the Pels chemistry…

  5. Markanen would be great but we gonna have to give up at least 2 future draft picks and players. Dyson, Kira, or Ryan 2 of the 3 would have to be traded.

  6. If we trade for a Guard we should think about bringing bsck Josh Hart of the Knicks another player I would like is Kenrich Williams of the Thunder.

  7. The reality is the player the Pels actually need, a versatile big who can shoot and rim protect and rebound, is not available on the market. And in fact that player may not even exist right now. This is the difficulty of having such a unique player in Zion to have to work around and try to cover for his myriad weaknesses. Porzingas was perhaps the closest which is why I championed trading for him a year ago, but that ship is sailed. Markkanen would be exceedingly expensive to acquire and he doesn't do much to fix your rim defense and rebounding, he just adds more length and shooting.

  8. Klay would never come to Nola. If hes traded will only go to the Lakers, Kings or Clippers. I would be shocked if he played outside of Cali.

  9. While I love Herb Jones, I think it should be asked if you can package him for someone like Mikal Bridges.

  10. I swear yall in a bubble. All of pels media released the same names this week. Said the moves earlier in the season. All of which keep the pels under the tax. These are much more realistic. Team seems to be fine, not the time to make big swings. Potential guards (Andrew Nembhard, Quentin Grimes, Ty Jerome, Lonnie Walker, Bones Hyland, Patty Mills ) bigs (Isaiah Jackson, Dayron Sharpe, Nick Richards, Goga Bitadze) – pels need insurance if nance get injured. They can draft a big later, this year they just need another body just in case. And I'd only trade Kira, EJ and one pick. Pels don't need four 2024 draft picks. They don't have the roster spots.

  11. The question is, would this backup guard play the last 5 mins of games? With CJ McCollum?? I love Lauri tbh but we would still need a true 5, I dunno if the team will swing hard for both him and JA
