This isn’t targeted at any specific player in particular but I always see people posting saying they want to save these max slots for FAs. In reality, that doesn’t really happen and when a player does become available, them choosing Philly over other teams rarely happens either.

If we want a guy, we’re most likely gonna need to trade for him.

  1. Just hope morey is lying to the reporters and still plans to make the big move before the deadline. Although by the draft sixers will have 5 first round picks to trade. But embiid is also close to 30.

So are we going to make a big trade or cause our cap space plan that was never realistic is failed lmao

This is factual. This idea that we have salary space is likely being used as trade leverage. Maxey isn’t going anywhere, neither are PG and Kawhi. You then are looking way down at Pascal or OG (who likely has a wink wink deal with NYK). There is no big fish that will move into our cap space. Best case if a trade isn’t made mid season, is that one occurs in offseason, but even then what top 25 guy that FITS will become available?

    This year’s too FAs: https://hoopshype.com/lists/2024-nba-free-agent-rankings/

  4. Just give up everything for Lauri. I’m tired of playing the waiting game

  5. Players like to stay where they get paid the most regardless if they win or not. Not surprised. This is why we need to make a trade and not rely on free agency.

My prediction is the Clips lose by the second round and don’t resign one of Kawhi or PG. Either one would fit quite nicely.

  7. Yeah for real, nothing *major* has happened in terms of FA signings since maybe the 2019 offseason

If only Morey had cap space and was overseeing the Sixers THAT year LOL

And even then, whether the player wants to play for the Sixers or not also matters and the big-time FAs just went to either LA or NY anyway

Trade for Mikal and Ben. Best case scenario Ben gets a brain transplant and returns to Allstar Ben. Worst case he’s an expiring in the offseason

  9. I don’t think it’s a 100% bluff that we’d roll with what we have into free agency and beyond the draft with a full chest of 5 firsts to trade, but it feels like the more radical option. Because while there is no one to sign, 5 first rounders can get you most players in the NBA, and we could just trade for them into cap space for the picks.

Morey’s contract extension as well is a message to other front offices that he’s not inclined to give up the farm in a trade. Embiid has been very, very quiet this year in general, and no one in ownership is forcing his hand. The only real obstacle is time. While he’s haggling, the world doesn’t stop and new options arrive, are removed in a blink or their priorities change. Morant is gone, Chris Paul is probably just a contract now, Kawhi just signed an extension. I think Morey waits too long sometimes, and that would be my only nitpick to his strategy

True. And I believe Morey would prefer to use the cap space this deadline rather than pull all our eggs in the off-season basket, but the new CBA is certainly going to change things going forward.

the sixers just keep throwing draft picks away for years now and it never turns out well. I know free agency is pretty useless these days but kind of tired of sending future draft picks out all the time. Leaning conservative these days. Just don’t see a trade right now that is worth all our draft capital

  12. Sheriff-Gotcha

Apparently Kawhi already signed an extension with the Clips today (per Woj). I wouldn’t be surprised if PG did the same soon, unless waiting until the offseason works better for them to re-sign Harden.

This has to be one of the worst off seasons to have max cap space for free agents. Everyone that would make a huge difference have player options and are most likely to opt-in to those deals.

  13. The NBA is turning into soccer in this regard. No team really wants to lose their stars for nothing in free agency.

  14. 3YearLettermanStan

You can also use cap space to trade for a player in the offseason (without needing to match salary) when you have 5 picks available to trade. Not saying which option is correct but cap space isn’t just for free agent signings

  15. jeppsforst

The NBA is broken. Stars “free agency” is just demanding a trade. Why take less money to sign elsewhere when you can sign for the biggest possible max, then demand a trade a year later on your extended contract?
