The Phoenix Suns built a video game roster…

For the 2020 to 2021 Phoenix Suns they had a roster of male Bridges Chris Paul DeAndre Aon Devon Booker Jay Crowder Cameron Johnson Cameron Payne Javon Carter Dario Sarge Frank kamitz Langston Galloway Tory Craig this team made the NBA finals and as it stands today there is

Only one player left from that roster on the Phoenix Suns and that’s Devon Booker and you know why because the Phoenix Suns decided to play NBA 2K in real life anyway the Phoenix Suns found themselves two games away from winning the NBA finals and I’m telling you that would have been a

Big that would have been a big story for Devin Booker because Devin Booker has been on the Phoenix Suns this is his ninth season in the league now he has played for six different head coaches like when Devin Booker first got into the league it was one of the most most

Unstable organizations from I think I think they uh the coaches were like Jeff hornek Earl Watson Jeff hornek Earl Watson uh Jay Triano and then eigor who only coached for uh all of One season and then they hire Monty Williams like the Monty Williams era was when the Phoenix Sun

Started to become more stable also again getting big time Acquisitions like Chris Paul and uh Jay Crowder and all of that and besides you had you had Booker you had the number one pick and Aon who wasn’t Luca or Trey young but again the Phoenix Suns needed

A big the pick made sense I’m not crapping on the pick I can’t do the rason this history I understand why the suns were like I don’t want to play Luca and Booker together I totally understand that now who would have known that Luca will be mentioned later in this video

Anyway thanks for for clicking on this video if you’re new here welcome in and if you know me welcome back feel free to subscribe like and comment with other video topics you want me to talk about and I will continue talking about the Phoenix Suns now so thank you now for

The most part if you tell me that a team makes the finals and then tell me that 3 years later that team is going to be like all gone except for one person I wouldn’t believe you because me would be like I would keep that core together for

As long as possible now the difference is is is that that team wasn’t made with timelines in mind right like it was cool that Chris Paul was able to be there but Chris Paul was like super old he’s like 88 in NBA years versus Booker versus Aon

It was like old and young we get that now the next year they bring back basically most of the roster make a couple of deals here or there and they win 64 games right anytime you win more than 60 games in the NBA people are like

Oh this is a serious team unless you’re that Atlanta Hawks team that then proceed to get swept by LeBron because it’s LeBron in the playoffs doesn’t really matter what seed I can’t believe I put LeBron in this video all right um but yeah this was a 64 and 18 team this

Team I don’t think this team had that many haters at the time I think the the working out after games kind of rubb people the wrong way cuz that that that’s very heat culture adjacent which I feel like we have all you know universally been like heat culture gets

Annoying and again this team disposes of the Pelicans in six and then they reach the Mavericks when they play Luca the player that they could have picked right and Luca’s become this big star but going into this playoff series I don’t think anyone really I might be misremembering this

But I feel like everyone not everyone but I feel like people were like the sun should have this like they’re the most they’re the more complete team like everyone was expecting the Phoenix Suns to beat the Mavericks and then play the Warriors that’s what we all H expect to

Happen and then the Phoenix Suns completely fall off the deep end and it’s really hard to say that about a team in a seven game series but that is exactly what happened that game seven against the Mavericks is one of the most embarrassing team performances I have

Ever seen it’s up there with like when the Yankees and Red Sox when the Red Sox came back from down being down 30-0 people always talk about the game four and game five I remember the game seven absolute trouncing at Yankee Stadium to lift the curse not lift the yeah lift

The curse cuz they had I don’t think they no not to lift the curse because they they had made the World Series in the ‘ 80s I’m rambling here but I still remember to this day Johnny Damon like hitting a grand slam hitting like having six RBI or something like that going

Crazy and it felt like that because that game seven of the Mavericks Phoenix Sun series to for the Mavericks to do that on the road kind of like just even more solidified how how absolutely terrifying Luca is but at the same time you look at that team and on paper you’re like the

Mavericks shouldn’t have been really close in this game I know they had Luca and Brunson but isn’t the player wasn’t the player that he is now Bron’s a a dog but that team that Mavericks team was starting reie Bullock Dorian finny Smith and Dwight Powell if you look at it on paper this

Team had no business being this close in a series with a 64 win Phoenix Suns team now I know that the Mavericks had just won 52 games and this was Jason Kid’s first season as the head coach to the team but I I keep going back to this this game

Because it just astounds me how much Phoenix fell apart afterwards and they haven’t been the same since actually I’m looking back at game six and seven and both of them are blowouts game six was 113 to 86 and game seven was 123 to 90 I didn’t I forgot that game six with a

Blowout cuz we all know about the Chris Paula hits the jumper to trim the lead down to 42 points or something but yeah that team hasn’t been the same so I guess what the Phoenix Suns were like hey they went back to the drawing board

And was like hey we I know we won 64 games but we need even more Firepower and I guess Monty Williams and DeAndre Aiden I know that people have like speculated that they never really saw eye to eye and I didn’t really understand it but now seeing how Monty

Williams treats this Detroit Pistons roster I can see it I mean I’m not a bad basketball Insider I always have to preface that I am just a dude on a couch with a mic but Kevin Durant becomes available the next season and the rudo bear trade happened

So now we were starting to learn just how valuable players were worth in today’s NBA whether the price had gone up being like how much do you really want this player and the Timberwolves broke the bank for Rudy goar which we clowned at the time I have to apologize

For the was because I thought that the Rudy go bear trade wouldn’t work it’s working spectacularly now I apologize for that I’ll make a separate video on that probably but then when Kevin Durant was asking for a trade we were like all right we just saw how much goar was

Worth how much is Kevin Durant worth now on February 9th 2023 I’m going to read this off a basketball reference but it’s a doozy as part of a four team trade the Phoenix Suns traded J Crowder to the Milwaukee Bucks the Phoenix Suns traded Mel Bridges Cameron Johnson a 2023 first

Round draft pick a 2025 first round draft pick a 2027 first round draft pick a 2028 first round draft pick a 2029 first round draft pick to the Brooklyn Nets and the Brooklyn Nets traded cash to the Indiana Pacers the Brooklyn Nets traded Kevin Durant and TJ Warren to the

Phoenix Suns the Indiana Pacers traded Juan valet to the Brooklyn Nets I might have butchered that name the Milwaukee Bucks traded a 2028 second round draft pick a 2029 round draft pick and the Milwaukee Bucks traded George Hill Serge Ibaka Jordan Nora a 2023 second round draft pick Isaiah Wong was selected a

2024 second round draft pick a 2025 second round draft pick to the Indiana Pacers and then there’s some other like who owns this so if I’m counting this right the Phoenix Suns sent over five first round draft picks and male Bridges and Cameron Johnson for Kevin

Durant and as it’s looking right now the Brooklyn Nets are winning that trade it goes to show that like even the Phoenix Suns that roster construction I know that Kevin Durant got there like late and they still had to do all the chemistry stuff and can this team work

Together and on paper this is what happens when whenever a big star gets traded on paper you get the trade and then you get the the Photoshop Jersey swap being like who’s stopping this team and everybody quote tweets and it’s easy engagement but I think that we’re seeing

A trend and a pattern of like a lot of super teams just aren’t going to work in today’s NBA anymore like the stuff that works this trade wouldn’t even work on 2K you know why cuz 2K only has like five slots so if I wanted to trade Kevin

Durant for M Bridges I think it would stop after like three first round picks I still don’t think that trade goes through that’s what’s crazy about it is that that’s a trade that you can’t even do in video games and I think that the roster construction thing gets a little

Bit more solidified when you realize that the Denver Nuggets Made Easy work of this Phoenix Suns team because I don’t think the Phoenix Suns really understood just how good male Bridges and Cameron Johnson were like seeing male Bridges being good for the Brooklyn Nets and cam Johnson being good for the

Brooklyn Nets like and but then just seeing an absolute the way that that nuggets team and roster is built is just the antithesis of how the Phoenix Suns have been trying to build their teams recently cuz the Phoenix Suns also tried that way you know whether it’s like

Progressing Devin Booker and um trading for Mel Bridges on draft night absolute steal by the way and having Aon and doing this draft pick having the core getting some free agents yada yada yada but now the Phoenix Sons have actually just overhauled it to being like hey

Let’s just go all in for this one dude and then we’ll fill in the rest of the roster with like Bargain Bin basketball players so the Nuggets beat the Suns in six and everyone’s like look at how this nuggets team is built this looks like the blueprint from

Now on instead of having these players just all show up together instead of having Kyrie and James Harden and Kevin Durant oh what about the rest of the Rock we don’t care about the rest of the roster that’s just those three we’re going to put them on every every Sports

Uh meme whatever and they’re the they’re the they’re a favorite they’re a contender I think we’ve gotten to the point as NBA fans to where like just a big trade being accepted doesn’t move us anymore like when Lillard got traded to the bucks from the Blazers I think that

A lot of people were just relieved at because it took like 2 and 1/2 months for them to get traded I think a lot of people just like sat back and was like okay that’s cool the Denver Nuggets are still here you know so now the Denver Nuggets win the championship with the

Way that they built their roster and they have a different philosophy their their philosophy is to now have you know they have Murray and yic and their philosophy is a little bit different um and their philosophy is to like draft these like college rookies that have been like playing college ball or

Whatever and they’re a little bit older than like the standard like top 10 picks now cuz the top 10 picks are usually based on like potential and stuff the Denver Nuggets now with their low picks are trying to draft like NBA ready role players rather than potential Stars

Which is interesting um but the Phoenix Suns again decided that this isn’t enough Kevin Durant and Devon Booker this isn’t enough but do we we want to build and get a lot of quality role players around Kevin Durant and Devin Booker no let’s go get Bradley Beal now

For one thing I I understand the Kevin Durant trade I think you make that trade a lot of times out of not right the Bradley Beal trade right now doesn’t look that good and it’s only because of the fact that those three are expensive Man without looking at the salaries like

If you tried to think of the salaries from memory you would be surprised to learn that Devon Booker is the third highest paid player on the team this year Kevin Durant makes 47 million and Bradley Beal makes 46.7 million and Booker makes 36 million nket 16 million

Grayson Allen 8 million Nas little 6 million Eric Gordon 3 million aogi 2 million Keon Johnson 2 million Damen Lee 2 million W Nai 2 million Eubanks 2li million bu bow 2 million and that’s the thing is that this son’s organization was like let’s get the big names first

And take care of the rest later but I feel like we’re in an era of basketball where you you can’t do that anymore you can’t just have three like you can’t just have like an entire offensive workload just depend on three people you can’t have that anymore especially three people whose

Skilled overlap a lot like all three of them love mid-range basketball I think it’d be a little bit different if they all loved the three-point line a little bit more than they do but these guys are mid-range operatives it’s a little different than an LA where the Clippers are like Paul

George and kawhai can spot up while Harden does the work the Phoenix Suns have a lot of mid-range operatives and not a real point guard option here and they’re just figuring that part out on the FL like I know that Devon Booker and Bradley Beal can do the playmaking but

It’s different when you have Chris Paul or whatever but yeah and I feel like the Phoenix Suns now are realizing that like you can construct a roster like it’s 2K as much as you want but in 2K at least you still have to prioritize rebounding and shot blocking and a

Little bit of Defense I don’t think that this team has what it takes to make a deep playoff run because there are so many other Better Built teams in just the Western Conference alone like when the Phoenix Suns free agency was done a lot of fans just

Looked around and was like that’s the whole team are you serious I remember when and this is not I know that b bow gets a lot of attention because a lot of a lot of fans think that b b a different player than he actually is it’s really

Interesting to see B bow on his third NBA team and then when bubo gets added to the Suns a lot of people put up the same highlight reel of his like highest of highlights and are like the Phoenix Suns got a steal is this the team that’s

Going to unlock B bow right and then if you ask a nuggets fan or a magic fan they’re going to and you ask them how the bull bow experience was they’re going to tell you some stories buddy go to the Orlando Magic Reddit and the Nuggets Reddit right now like it was

Very funny when Shaq was like we already have a Victor wanyama in the league and his name is b b and I’m not trying to laugh at B B I’m not trying but the NBA media and NBA fans keep putting him in conversations that he should not be

In and I don’t know what this Phoenix Suns team does after this like because Kevin Durant’s 35 and the Jeff Teague podcast made a whole good point being like yeah I totally understand why Kevin Durant keeps trying to go to other good teams because he’s 35 he’s not trying to be

The number one option at 35 and I don’t know if that’s true or not but it did get me thinking being like if I was 35 years old in the NBA I would want someone else to be like the number one scoring option whether it’s like Devin Booker and Deon Booker is but

Kevin Durant’s still like neck and neck with Devon Booker whatever I think the main thing here right now is the fact that even though Beal is coming back from injury and he had the injuries when when Beal was started off injured this season cuz this big three hasn’t played

Together that long by the time I make this video like if it’s just two of them then this team isn’t that good and they have to be on this team has to be on this team has to outscore people because they’re not going to out defend people

Right this team has one way of beating people it’s not like another team it’s not like the Celtic where like yeah they’re not shooting well but they can defend they got Drew holiday they got Derek white you know they got porzingis at The Rim they got Horford they can

Lock down like this Suns team has to outscore people because nurkic is not really a rim protector while Kevin Durant’s been a good defender in his career he’s also 35 right you got an often injured Bradley Beal who right now is putting up basically the same numbers

As Eric Gordon who by the way is also on the team and is 40 million dollar cheaper I would love to be shut up about this and about the Phoenix Suns not having a good enough enough roster construction but I look up and down the Western Conference and I’m like no

There’s no way I don’t see this team going that far at all and this Suns team took a lot of big swings I know that they’re going to end up in misses and I wonder what that means for the Suns long term because if I’m reading this right

The be contract he has a player option in in 2026 2027 the Devon Booker contract goes to 2027 2028 and the Kevin Durant contract goes from 2025 to 2026 right I feel like it’s going to be extremely hard and I’m not an expert on salaries here but I feel like it’s going

To be extremely hard to move off of that be contract like I feel like that is the least tradable contract in the league and I say that more than when he had that no trade clause with the Wizards I thought that then was the least tradable contract in the league

Because then you had to be like Bend to Bradley Beal’s will I thought that that but now we’re going to get an older Bradley Beal for that amount of money I don’t think that the Phoenix LS are going to be able to just like move on from Bradley Beal when this goes

South and you know how in 2K when you have those like three max contract guys and you basically just just fill in the roster with just a bunch of like one to 2ear vet minimum contracts that’s what’s happening with the sun’s roster right a lot of contracts expire in 2024 2025

They have four player options right and then one team option but like these are all so cheap contracts because when you have too many PE you when you have two when you have like three players taking up that much amount of cap space you’re going to be left

With players that either have to take a cut or vet minimum level good and I don’t think that that’s a way to construct a team anymore I don’t think that that I feel like there going to be a lot of stars now where they’re going to look at this situation and be like

Hey I want this money and I want to play with my friends and they also want this money this might not work anymore especially with like the new CBA which like I’m not reading that entire document but I feel like the new CBA will also affect this somehow it reminds

Me of the story when Kobe wanted a trade and the Lakers looked at him and were like hey look I know you want this trade just keep in mind whatever team we trade you for what we get back from that trade you’re going to be sent to a new team

And you’re going to be in the same situation because you are the best one of the best players in the league and the other team is going to have to give up a lot for you I think we’re at the point now in the NBA where players and

The price of these players is so high that no matter where they go they will end up in the same situation or potentially worse because they are valued so much and the the Brooklyn Nets won that Kevin Durant trade as far as I’m concerned honestly I know that

Phoenix Suns tried to maximize a window but I really think that they really tie themselves to a situation that’s not going to look pretty I don’t I don’t know what they do from here

I made this video before Beal’s masterclass lol

  1. As a suns fan I am worried. Honestly as a suns fan I just sick of always be second place and being the younger brother to all LA teams. I hope we can win soon. This town really needs it.
Besides the Phx mercury has more chips than we do you know how embarrassing that is

  2. Love the content man keep it up, I think a vid about the potential fall of “super teams” in this new era of ball will be reallly interesting , coupled with the fact theres just so many better players (good role players) on most top teams

  3. Love the specific team coverage! More interesting than individual players imo.

Do you think Pels are legitimate contender in West or no?

  4. Also would love a video on the Pelicans. People only talk about Zion's effort but BI has been locked in defensively, Trey Murphy is a lot better off the dribble, and the whole team is shooting more 3's at a higher efficiency. Feels like something finally clicked for them

  5. I saw an interesting stat that the Suns have the worst Q4 net rating in the league by -16.1. I dont watch suns games but are their top heavy starts burnt out by then or is their bench really that bad

  6. Suns fan here. Pretty good video overall. A few things I would add: A major factor you skipped over was the Suns ownership situation. Going thru all the Robert Sarver drama, then getting Mat Ishbia to buy the team and want to make an immediate splash by overpaying for Durant was a huge part of how we got here.

I have mixed feelings about the Chris Paul – Bradley Beal trade, because we'd seen that Chris Paul was getting picked on defensively, and the Suns didn't have enough good defensive players around him to cover that, and at the same time, the league has been moving towards a faster paced, more 3 point shooting play type, which doesn't work in CP3's favor. That said, we only gain slightly on D just from Beal being bigger, and taking a couple more 3s than CP3 would, while sacrificing ball-handling and burdening ourselves with an untradeable contract. It's another "new owner wants to make a splash and form a superteam" sort of trade.

I'd also say that the vibes were pretty bad for the team in the post-Mavs blowout year, because they needed to show improvement from that poor performance, but how do you do that when you won 64 games the year before, and you can't really prove anything until the playoffs? Also the Monty/Ayton stuff was starting to swirl, and the Sarver situation was hanging over everything, while also limiting our ability to make roster/firing moves to change the vibes. That whole season was awful for an otherwise promising team. I was so happy when Ishbia took over the team and made the Durant trade, even though I knew it was an overpay, just because we at least had a different set of problems to deal with finally.

  7. So this is the first time I’ve watched you. Thanks for not yelling at me, for not being sensationalist, and for having a well thought out and nuanced point of view. You rock.

  8. Great video Kofie (as a Sixers fan please dont remind me of the Mikal draft day trade tho 🙁

Would love a video comparing all the superteams, as I think superteams didnt change, but the circumstances were just different.
The Heatles were a success because they also had Spo as coach, despite the rest of the team.
The '08 Celtics won, despite Doc, because their stars had strengths that fit amazingly.

  9. Beal is literally the least tradable contract without even looking at the bread… he’s the only guy in the league with a no trade clause.

  10. I honestly think the Suns put together a team that will be perpetually just over .500. There's no depth. I said this to some people on reddit at the beginning of the season and they insisted the team is incredibly deep and they just hadn't had enough time playing together. We're about halfway through the season and we're still not seeing the depth. Booker, Beal, and Durant will have games where they just dominate (when they're all healthy) and that's enough to win but that won't happen against good defensive teams with deep benches.

  11. One small thing is that you kinda wrote off how special Brunson was in that Dallas playoff run, he was averaging 28, 4, 4 in the first round and averaged 21 throughout their run as a whole. I think his ascent, and the fact that the Suns dropped 2 to the Pelicans, made a lot of people pick Dallas as the favorite to win the series.

  12. I love how you pointed out the Nuggets philosophy on the how they draft, i’m a Warriors fan and i’ve wanted them to do that in years past, Dunleavy drafted Podz and TJD who are Nba ready while Bob Meyers messed up by drafting Wiseman and Kuminga who needed to be developed, Moses Moody has shown that he is Nba rea because he knows his role and knows what to do but Kerr doesn’t play him idk why but outside of that we aren’t that timeline! But if there’s a contender out there a guy like P.J Hall would be great to have on the roster next year, he’s already Nba ready and I know he’d know his role the second he gets to the league, im hoping the Warriors can find a way to get him in the upcoming draft

  13. That Yankees-Red Sox series was the one to lift the curse. They hadn't won a World series since they had traded Babe Ruth.

  14. 5:33 You say "they had Brunson, but meh, he wasnt the player he is now."
That couldnt be further from the truth. The last 2 or 3 weeks, through the first 2 rounds, was Brunson becoming "that guy". That run, was Jalen's coming out party.

  15. I feel like these past few years of trying to make super teams work in Brooklyn or in phoenix and seeing how they fizzled out or how the team has no depth and can’t work will be a dark spot in nba history.

  16. I'm sorry I like your content but who the fuck was interested in geriatric Chris Paul and a max contract Deandre Ayton (by several advanced metrics the worst player in the 2023 playoffs), like if you want to criticize the KD deal because Brooklyn managed to salvage their unstable contender into a directionless lottery team that's your prerogative but it's just ignorant to act like the Suns actually could have gone out and gotten role guys to play next to KD and Booker instead of the Beal trade they actually did. As a Suns fan, do I think they're gonna win a championship out of it? Probably not! But sitting back and armchair GMing as if there was actually a better option than Beal forcing his way here with his no-trade clause is just a bad take.
