And I know I’ve said this three times now in the past two to 3 weeks but it’s one of the worst losses of the season the Pelicans were without Four Star second night of a back toback the Pelicans played Friday night in Denver they made the trip to Dallas they did

Not get to their hotel until after 430 in the morning and they frankly out hustled and they out they outplayed the Mavericks on a night where the Mavericks simply should have ran them off the floor the Pelicans were without four key starters including Zion Williamson and

They were able to just out physical the Mavs and yes we the the Mavs issues are well chronicled as far as their rebounding and overall physicality goes and we’ll get into more about the physicality here in just a moment but when you’re without these guys and you

Don’t get in until 4 a.m. you’re without Zion Williamson without Brandon Ingram without Trey Murphy without CJ McCollum the Mavericks should be able to win a game like that and yeah of course the Mavericks were without Luca they were without Lively without Dante exen so they’re without three starters as well

When you have the likes of Kyrie Irving the likes of Tim Hardaway Jr you should be able to outscore a team that lost basically over 60% of their scoring from the evening Jordan Hawkins rookie out of Yukon led the way for the Pelicans he had over 30 points a career high in his

Young career and I really do like Jordan Hawkins but when he’s the best player he’s the one that’s torching the Mavericks it it’s just not a good loss and once again the Mavs just lose a game that they shouldn’t lose and until they really figure that out they will not be

A true contender in the Western Conference you take a look at the bad losses they’ve had so far this is just in 2024 the game against Cleveland where they’re up 10 points with seven minutes left no Donovan Mitchell in that game no Evan Mobley in that game and they end up

Losing there at the last moment because they couldn’t execute late game against the Memphis Grizzlies without John Morant and they’re on the second night of a back toback they came into Dallas put up 120 and one 120 to 103 and then last night against the Pelicans another

Situation where the team is on less rest than the Mavericks are they are less healthy than the Mavericks are and they end up winning the game when they simply should not look the Mavericks got to find a way to be able to win these games otherwise they are not going to be a

Contender for the Western Conference they they had a complete lack of energy and I don’t want to say lack of care because I don’t think that’s fair to them but they had they had multiple chances to be able to take the lead and assert their dominance on a team that

They frankly should have and they couldn’t do it Jason kid was asked last night in postgame about why the lack of energy and lack of effort and this was his response he said I’ll you’ll have to ask them I’m just the coach I don’t love that response but I think kid was trying

To uh Express frustration with his players and how they played obviously it’s the coaches uh prerogative in order to help the players get ready to play a game whether it’s game 60 in the middle of January or it’s game one or game 82 it’s their it’s their responsibility to

Have their teams ready to play on any given night the Mavericks simply weren’t ready to play this game and it showed on the court uh resulting in another embarrassing 10-point loss for the Mavericks uh look they’re going to be fine there are ups and downs in an NBA

Season and they’re going to find a way to I believe they’re going to find a way to make the playoffs they’re too good uh to not make the playoffs with Luca and Kyrie but I do have a bit of concern about their ability uh to win games when

Need him given their lack of rebounding and and physicality there on in the front Court Dante X him Ste dealing with a I believe it’s an Achilles issue uh he it was first just a heel bruise and now it’s an Achilles issue he hasn’t played in a while hopefully he’ll be back here

Soon and then Luca obviously with that sprained ankle as well uh he I think his status is a little better than Lively he should be back sooner rather than later uh but when you’re without three key guys who Jason kid deems as starters cuz Dante exm will be a starter as well when

He returns uh you you you have to be able to to withstand this and the Mavericks haven’t been able to when they have guys injured especially when they have Lively injured they just don’t win many games because they’re not able to to combat physicality up front and

Lively is is almost as important as a guy like Kyrie or like Luca because when he’s out the Mavericks have a terrible record I believe they’ve won just two games uh in Lively’s absence so far and when Lively is unable to play the Mavericks just have no one who at the

Five Dwight pal is obviously not it I will say it’s good that Maxi kleo was also back last night because he did bring some stuff he only played 10 to 12 minutes but when he brought some physicality on the defensive end he’s not going to be able to rebound for you

But when he when he’s on the court he is able to play four and bring you an edge that even Grant Williams isn’t bringing you yet but the theme in all three of these bad losses for the Mavericks uh is basically the opponents also had key players out uh the Grizzlies didn’t have

Mor Cavaliers didn’t have Moy or Mitchell uh the map’s just Harden physical enough man I don’t know how many more times I can say it they got to go find someone at the NBA trade deadline to to be more physical and whether that’s Pascal seak who we’ll

Will the will the Mavericks have to give up a first in order to get Pascal SE yakum and number two I believe if you are trading for se yakum you have to sign him to an extension because there’s no point in signing him to a rental especially with the Mavericks cap

Efficient player he’s played a lot of game so far he’s stayed relatively healthy and I think that’s actually one of the things that works out in his favor is that he’s he has stayed healthy for the majority of the season that’s not something the Mavericks can save for
