Kid’s got a very bright future. Things I’d like to see him work on:
• He’s not much for passing. Right at 2 per game. This is where he could look to Desmond Bane as someone to aspire to: out of necessity, Des has had to become more of a playmaker and is now averaging over 5 assists a game. But that opens things up for him a bit because defenders have to stay aware that he can hit teammates in scoring position and play him that way. If GG made just a couple of extra attempts to hit teammates when they could score, it would open things up as well. The opposite end of this is JJJ: he gets more double-teams because opposing defenses know he doesn’t pass.
• My guy whines A LOT when he thinks he’s been fouled. He has to learn that he’s an 18 year old rookie who is **never** going to get those calls against decent defenders who have been in the league a few years. In a year or two? Maybe. Now? No, let it go and move on.
• I like that his 3-point shot is on but he’s got an excellent feel for the midrange. We’re a team that does **NOT** work the midrange enough. And of course all the data is pushing teams to just shoot threes, which the Grizzlies have obviously committed to. But that’s really an opportunity because the Grizzlies —just like so many other teams— are so committed to the three that it’s easy to fake a three and get into the midrange, which he did a time or two and it was fucking beautiful.
