Defensive Minded Magic Steals Win From Knicks In The Garden | New York Knicks

THE KNICKS POST-GAME SHOW PRESENTED BY TRI-STATE AUDI. DEUCE McBRIDE A CAREER HIGH 19 SATURDAY, 20 TODAY. THE KNICKS SCORED ONLY 16 POINTS IN THE THIRD QUARTER, ONLY 6 POINTS IN THE FINAL MINUTES FOR THE GAME. FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR, THE MAGIC BEAT THE KNICKS.

THE FINAL ON THIS MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY 98-94. GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US FROM THE GARDEN. YOU MAKE THE POINT. THESE PESKY ORLANDO MAGIC, THEY MAKE THINGS TOUGH FOR THE OPPOSITION. NO FRANZ WAGNER FOR ORLANDO. NO JALEN BRUNSON FOR THE KNICKS. WE KNOW HOW IMPORTANT BRUNSON IS FOR THIS TEAM.

YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS DOWN THE STRETCH WHEN HE’S NOT THERE. THE KNICKS SCORED ONLY 6 POINTS IN THE FINAL SIX MINUTES OF THE GAME. THAT’S WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. TWO ROTATION PLAYERS TRADED AWAY. YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR START POINT GUARD. DEUCE McBRIDE, HE PLAYED HIS TAIL OFF. DIVING ALL OVER THE PLACE.

MAKING SHOTS. STEPPING UP. HE WAS AGGRESSIVE. HE WAS TRYING TO MAKE PLAYS. TRYING TO MAKE SHOTS. HE’S NOT USED TO IT. WHEN YOU’RE CHANGING ROTATIONS AND PLAYERS, WHEN ONE OF YOUR BEST PLAYERS IS OUT, WHEN YOU MAKE A BIG TRADE, IT’S TOUGH TO GET ORGANIZED. JAMAHL MOSLEY HAS THIS TEAM

PLAYING DEFENSE, PLAYING PHYSICAL. WE SAW IT IN ORLANDO. THEY STOLE A WIN HERE AGAINST THE KNICKS DAY. ORLANDO OUTSCORED THE KNICKS IN THE FINAL MINUTES OF THE BALL GAME. AND THAT’S YOUR BALL GAME RIGHT THERE. LOOK HERE AT DEUCE McBRIDE. THAT WAS A PLAY THAT TOM

THIBODEAU SAID YOU’RE MY GUY. ANUNOBY HITS THE BIG THREE WHICH HELPED THE KNICKS HOLD ON TO THE LEAD. DOWN THE STRETCH, THAT WAS A HUGE ONE BY OKEKE. HE KNOCKED DOWN THAT THREE. THEN THE REBOUNDING. THE KNICKS WERE OUT REBOUNDED BY FIVE. NORMALLY A GREAT REBOUNDING TEAM.

BANCHERO GOT TO HIS SPOTS IN THAT FOURTH QUARTER. HE SAID I’M NOT KNOCKING DOWN THE THREES. I’LL MAKE TWO CRUCIAL SHOTS IN THE MIDRANGE. THAT EXTENDED THE LEAD TO 4 POINTS. THEN THE KNICKS WERE PLAYING CATCH UP. IT’S A TOUGH LOSS. THE KNICKS DID NOT SHOOT WELL TODAY. W

LOOK AT THE FINAL STATS. THE MAGIC OUT SCORING THE KNICKS IN THE FINAL QUARTER. BENCH POINTS WERE KEY. WENDELL CARTER HAD 17 FOR ORLANDO. COLE ANTHONY HAD 15. THE KNICKS OFF THE BENCH WITH ONLY 20 POINTS. OF COURSE THE BENCH TOTAL IS COMPROMISED BECAUSE DEUCE McBRIDE’S STARTING.

IF HE’S COMING OFF THE BENCH, YOU’RE GETTING 20. McBRIDE WAS EXCELLENT AS A STARTER. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING IT. AFTER THE TRADE YOU LOSE TWO ROTATION PLAYERS. THEN YOU LOSE JALEN BRUNSON. DEUCE McBRIDE STEPPED UP. PLAYING GREAT. CAREER HIGHS EVERY NIGHT. YOU NEED SOMEONE ELSE ON THE

BENCH TO STEP UP. JOSH HART’S BEEN STRUGGLING TRYING TO MAKE PLAYS. THAT REALLY WAS EVIDENT TODAY. DEUCE McBRIDE, I GIVE THIS GUY A LOT OF CREDIT. LIKE I SAID LAST GAME, I SAW HIM IN THE ELEVATOR GOING TO THE GAME IN MEMPHIS. THIS GUY LIVES AND BREATHES BASKETBALL. HE LIVES IN THE GYM.

HE’S WORKED ON HIS GAME. I THINK HIS POINT GUARD SKILLS ARE STARTING TO COME. HE’S STARTING TO LEARN I CAN RUN PICK AND ROLL AND KNOCK DOWN THE THREE. I CAN TRUST MY JUMP SHOT TO KNOCK DOWN BIG SHOTS FOR THE TEAM WHEN THEY NEED IT. WHEN JULIUS RANDLE CAN’T CREATE

A LOT OF OFFENSE, I’M THE GUY THAT HAS TO DO IT. HE TRIED TO DO IT. UNFORTUNATE THE KNICKS COULDN’T CASH IN FROM THE FREE THROW LINE. JE THAT’S HOW YOU GIVE AWAY A GAME YOU PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE WON AGAINST THE MAGIC.

ALL TOLD FROM THE LINE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER, THE KNICKS GO 2 FOR 6. ALAN HAHN IS AROUND THE CORNER. ALAN, YOUR THOUGHTS, A 4-POINT LOSS TO THE MAGIC AS THE KNICKS START A RUN AT HOME WITH A LOSS. IT FELT LIKE THERE WAS TOO

MUCH TIME LEFT IN THE GAME WHEN THE KNICKS HAD THAT LEAD IN THE FOURTH QUARTER. THEY REALLY STARTED TO RUN OUT OF GAS. IT’S JANUARY. IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR. YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE EXCUSES. IT FELT LIKE THEY HAD NOTHING LEFT IN THE TANK TO FINISH THIS

GAME. THE MAGIC HAD ALL THE ENERGY. IN THE FOURTH QUARTER THE KNICKS WERE OUT REBOUNDED 16-8 AT HOME. THAT NEVER HAPPENS TO THIS TEAM. THERE’S THAT AND THEN, OF COURSE, THERE’S THE BENCH. THAT IS SOMETHING, OF COURSE, YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT AS WELL WITH THE SCORING THAT THEY

GOT — MAGIC GOT OFF THE BENCH. THEY HAD 32 POINTS OUT OF COLE ANTHONY, PLAYING AT HOME IN NEW YORK, AND ALSO WENDELL CARTER JR. GAVE YOU 17 POINTS AS THE BACK-UP BIG. THAT’S A LOT OF PRODUCTION FOR 49 POINTS VERSUS JUST 20 FOR THE

KNICKS OFF THEIR BENCH. THAT’S PART OF IT AS WELL. WE NO — WALLY, IT FELT LIKE FROM LOOKING AT IT THERE WAS TOO MUCH TIME IN THE GAME AND THE KNICKS DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH LEFT IN THE GAS TANK TO FINISH IT. YEAH. IN CRUNCH TIME YOU WANTED PADDING WITHOUT JALEN BRUNSON,

ONE OF THE MOST CLUTCH PLAYERS. A POINT GUARD’S VERY IMPORTANT. HE ORGANIZES THE OFFENSE. HE’S GOING TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. HE’LL GET A SWACH WHERE HE CAN GET RANDLE THE BALL. HE’LL COME OFF THE SCREEN AND KNOCK DOWN A MIDRANGE SHOT OR TAKE HIS GUY INTO THE POST AND

GET A GOOD LOOK AT THE BASKET. IT’S UNFORTUNATE THE KNICKS COULDN’T PULL THIS OUT. THE EFFORT WAS THERE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME THIS MAGIC TEAM, YOU WOULD HAVE LIKE TO HAVE GOT THIS ONE. THEY’RE REELING. YOU COULD HAVE PUT THEM IN THE REARVIEW. YOU MIGHT BE COMPETING WITH THEM FOR PLAYOFF POSITIONING.

NOW THEY HAVE A 2-0 LEAD ON YOU. ALAN, WALLY MADE THE POINT, WHEN BRUNSON PLAYS IT MAKES RANDLE’S LIFE SO MUCH EASIER. RANDLE FROM THE FLOOR 5 OF 18 TODAY. ALSO A LITTLE COMPROMISED BY AN ANKLE ISSUE. IT’S TRUE. WHEN YOU WATCH THIS TEAM PLAY

OFFENSIVELY, WE WERE NOTICING ABOUT HOW RANDLE WAS GOING ON THE TEAR AND IT WAS BECAUSE OPPOSING DEFENSES WERE FOCUSING SO MUCH ON GETTING THE BALL OUT OF BRUNSON’S HANDS. THEY WERE TRAPPING HIM, DOUBLING HIM. BIGS HAD TO HELP OUT. BRUNSON IS SO TOUGH TO GUARD ONE-ON-ONE. THAT LEAVES JULIUS RANDLE IN

ONE-ON-ONE SITUATIONS WHERE HE JUST DOMINATES ONE-ON-ONE. WITHOUT BRUNSON ON THE FLOOR, IT’S A DIFFERENT LOOK. YOU’RE NOT TRYING TO DOUBLE OTHER PLAYERS. NOW ALL OF YOUR ATTENTION IS ON JULIUS RANDLE. HE HAS TO CREATE. IF YOU NOTICE HE SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE PERIMETER IN THIS GAME.

NINE THREE-POINT ATTEMPTS. HE WAS 2 FOR 9. IT’S SOMETHING WE’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WITH JULIUS RANDLE, THE WORK HE’S DONE IN THE PAINT AND HOW HE’S DONE MOST OF HIS DAMAGE IN THE PAINT AND NOT TAKING A LOT OF THREES. AGAIN, WHEN DEFENSES CAN LOAD UP ON YOU, FOCUS ON YOU, THEY TAKE

AWAY SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE OPEN FOR YOU WHEN JALEN BRUNSON WAS ON THE FLOOR. THAT’S SOMETHING WE’RE NOTICING WITHOUT J.B. OUT THERE. IT WAS A LEFT ANKLE ON WHICH RANDLE HAD SURGERY. HE TWEAKED HIS RIGHT ANKLE IN THE FIRST HALF. WENT INTO THE LOCKER ROOM AND

CAME BACK TO THE BENCH. HOPEFULLY IT’S NOTHING SIGNIFICANT. GOOD SIGN HE WAS ABLE TO GET BACK IN THE GAME. LISTEN, HE GUTTED IT OUT. OBVIOUSLY COMPROMISED. WASN’T HIS FULL 100% SELF. HE HAD A TOUGH MATCHUP. PAOLO BANCHERO IS A GUY HE’S NOT

GOING TO BE ABLE TO OVERPOWER BECAUSE HE’S JUST AS BIG, JUST AS MOBILE. HE’S ONE OF THE RARE GUYS IN THE NBA THAT CAN GUARD JULIUS RANDLE ONE-ON-ONE. RANDLE HAD TO MOVE OUT TO THE PERIMETER. HE MADE SOME GOOD PLAYS TO FIND GUYS IN THE CORNER FOR OPEN LOOKS.

OVERALL THIS ORLANDO TEAM WORE THE KNICKS DOWN WITH THEIR PHYSICALITY AND YOUTH. THEIR YOUTH HELPED THEM. ALAN, ANY FINAL THOUGHTS? SOMETHING WALLY SAID EARLIER THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO. LOOK AT THE STANDINGS. YES, IT’S THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON. GAME 41 IS WEDNESDAY.

WE’RE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. IT MIGHT BE TOO EARLY TO LOOK AT THE STANDINGS. I DON’T THINK SO BECAUSE IT’S SO JUMBLED UP. YOU SEE WHERE THE MAGIC ARE IN THE STANDINGS AND NOW YOU’RE TWO GAMES DOWN FROM THEM. THESE TYPES OF GAMES MATTER. WHEN YOU PLAY AN EASTERN

CONFERENCE OPPONENT IN THE TOP SIX, THESE GAMES ARE DOUBLE. THEY MEAN A LOT MORE. ABSOLUTELY LOSING A GAME ON YOUR HOME FLOOR THAT YOU HAD A LEAD IN AGAINST A TEAM YOU’RE WORRIED

With Jalen Brunson out the Knicks struggled to find the scoring touch in the 4th quarter to put away the Magic and allowed Orlando back into the game to lose 98-94 in the MLK Day matinee. Miles McBride had 20 points and OG Anunoby had 17 points in the loss to Orlando. Knicks look to bounce back against the Rockets on Wednesday.

  1. Knicks have no business losing to the freaking Magic, and this is twice already. And Randle and Donte missed these critical and important free throws for I don't know what reason. THEY CAN'T MISS THESE FREE THROWS!

  2. Tibs didn’t want to dig into the bench u got guys playing 40minutes of course the guys gonna run out of steam knicks need to sure that bench up or something cuz that’s crazy

  3. can't win wo brunson. the offense can't go through randle. he is only effective when brunson plays. he is not a ball handler or 3pt shooter. deuce tried but they defer to randle and down go the knicks.

  4. I don’t care what the MSG Network says McBride’s scoring – McBride is not a dominant PG. He is better off playing SG as a spacer and as back up for Donte and Grimes. The rumor that the Knicks are looking at Tyus Jones instead of Donovan or Dejonte is not good considering the real need for a strong back-up PG.

When Jalen is down the Knicks start to look like the old Knicks with their fake PGs – totally lost, uncoordinated, leaderless and sometimes comedic. If you want to be a strong team, key men like Jalen need strong back-up, not lowly paid PGs. You get what you pay for.

That goes for the third Center. What’s the deal with Atchawa? He is too small and too lost to be an NBA Center. The Knicks need to contract a tall Center for this year’s run. This year Robinson may come back, but will collapse again and be reinjured.

Despite people saying other teams have better chances of taking the Championship this year, I believe it all depends on who will be left standing in the play-off series and whether or not their teams have a good back-up for him. The Knicks is setting themselves to fail early in this season. Leon Rose should watch himself being too conservative with his dealings so better future prospects can be had. The thinking should be that the future should be balanced with the current season run for the championship.

    Let’s get Dejonte or Donovan.

  5. Fultz and Carter are on the trading block. Knicks should offer Fournier, Grimes and a 2nd round pick for the 2 of them. That would definitely strengthen the Knicks bench and Fournier goes home
