There are a lot of people out there that were looking for me to make a quick transition to another team but I was able to communicate early on with the front office with Chanty that I wanted to be here but I I actually wanted to be in Portland it’s an opportunity I wanted

And I’ve really Embraced hi I’m Malcolm Brogden I’m a guard for the Portland Trailblazers and I’m from Atlanta Georgia I grew up in inner city Atlanta I’m the youngest of three boys my mom is a college educator my dad is an attorney you know education was huge in my household having to take that serious

Before you could get on the court and that really sort of guided me started playing basketball maybe when I was 6 or seven and no it was never my first love soccer was always my first Love but I ended up being too big and you know I naturally my brothers my friends everybody around me in my neighborhood was playing basketball so that’s just what I ended up gravitating to my brothers they were definitely hard on me we were hard on each other as a

Very competitive household in the classroom on the court everything we competed and I think that’s what you know drove all of us to be uh I think respected in our different fields I started out at a at a big private school in uh Southern Atlanta uh where both my brothers graduated from

The academics were were were good but the basketball wasn’t great you know my mom had me moved to a smaller private school Christian School um where both were at the same level they were both high level ended up winning two state championships there eventually went to University of Virginia where I got a

Education and played in ACC the way got it the buer from malm brog the Cavaliers with the 4845 lead are you kidding me first year of irginia is really I think where I uh faed my biggest challenge you know especially as an athlete I I broke a

Bone in my foot and then had to red shirt my second year sit out you know it really sort of made me uh look at school education everything differently basketball so I had to develop a plan B ended up entering a master’s program applying getting in during that off year

And you know I got back on the court my third year spent all five years in college cuz I had three more years of Eligibility and after my fourth year I actually had a chance to leave even go to the NBA I wasn’t going to get drafted

Where I wanted to get drafted so I decided to come back and finish my Master’s Degree which I did I thought that was a great decision uh that my mom really pushed me towards what is your degree in uh it’s in public Policy I knew after school I would want to you know devote a lot of my resources and a lot of my life to helping other people in need so clean water ended up being sort of my my access towards that the thing that I wanted to pinpoint to really impact people’s lives especially

In Africa so for my thesis project and my master’s program I actually did it on clean water in the Limpopo region of South Africa small region that lacks clean water there and then getting drafted into the NBA in 2016 to the Milwaukee Bucks I started working with a foundation that

Was focused on you know building clean water wells in East Africa after I did that for about 2 years I started my own foundation and um you know now we build clean water wells in East Africa I was able to win Rookie of the Year my first year I came into the league after 5 years of college and I was 23 years old I had a lot of experience I was more like a tumani playing all those years and you know

Being mature being ready for this I was sort of thrown into the fire into the mix I was I was starting for the Milwaukee Bucks with you know up and cominging stars like Giannis and Jabari Parker and guys like that so I was given a lot of opportunity but you know I was

Able to really handle the opportunity and have a good season it was good but you know now I’m I’m able to to reflect on it to look at the rookies we have now and guide them through it guide them through that rookie year cuz it’s tough no matter if

You win that award or not it’s a tough rookie year everybody’s on your back the higher pick you are like a guy like scoot you’re not cruising you actually have more pressure on you you have the coaches on your back more because the expectations within the RO so for a guy

Like him I want to be sort of a guy of balance for him to talk to to not criticize and PR encourage them all the time but I want to be that for all the young guys on our team honestly I was excited to be with an organization that was rebuilding that

Would value my my input uh value my leadership uh value my presence on the court with young guys I’ve actually grown to really really enjoy Portland Portland has so much culture uh it has such great food it’s probably the best Food City I’ve been in I’ve lived in ever the people
