Bobby Marks’ Utah Jazz Trade Guide | NBA on ESPN

All right a happy Tuesday hopefully everyone is doing great out there uh we are going to do I guess this is we call it episode four although we only have two episodes out of the Lakers uh trade guide video and then we did a condensed version on Sunday after the Wizards

Pistons trade we did a Detroit Washington condensed version so I guess this is I guess in theory it’s it’s trade guide video number three um and we are going to focus in on the uh Utah Jazz we have the big uh offseason guys coming out the week of the 22nd Eastern

And Western Conference split up into two I’m not sure which is coming out first probably East comes out first trade meter what to watch front office history trades we’d like to see kind of a 800 words on each team it’s it’s a big document here it’s kind of just

Everything you kind of need to know about the trade gu uh trade season some teams are more in-depth than others um you know if you’re the Clippers we’re not really going in in full detail um but we are going to talk about the Utah Jazz one of the more fascinating teams

Out there um 15 and four um in their last 19 games top four record in those games among all teams um how it usually works is once I start talking positive about a team um they go in in the in the tank so hopefully for Utah Utah Jazz

Fans out there that is not going to happen um have played their best basketball with you know certainly moving John Collins to Center all about getting Health people uh all about getting healthy uh marinan is playing at a all-nba level coming off um player of the week honors at West Sexton’s been

Great they’ve starting to get really good production out of the rookie Keon George ker come off the bench Clark I mean Lista this is a deep deep team so when you’re talking about Utah at at the trade um at the trade deadline it’s it’s kind of like a tale of two different

Seasons kind of where they were last year they last year they got off to this great start after you know tearing down the roster with the Mitchell goar bogdanovic um Royce O’Neal trades play extremely well start season I think they go 10 and three kind of play like a 500

Teams going up to trade deadline and then they make the decision we’re going to trade Mike Conley Jr to Minnesota as part of that big deal we’re in that draft asset accumulation we get a future from uh 2027 protected I think top four from the Lakers and that’s kind of we’re

Going to take a step back we have three picks in the draft and that’s what we’re going to focus on um this was last year as far as the thinking of of the Jazz you fast forward this year this team was left for dead how they you know getting blown out in

Portland and on the road and Memphis I mean you know you’re six and 17 and we’re like oh my God like maybe like instead of retooling we’re basically going to have to hit full scale rebuild here for this Utah team and then all of a sudden right around I think I was I

Was with Tim bontems at the city of Palms when they Utah was playing Brooklyn it didn’t look too good and then all of a sudden boom this team as I said is 15- 4 22 and 20 as of um Tuesday they’re in the playin and then all of a

Sudden instead of maybe being a seller out there and adding more draft picks people are saying well maybe Utah can be a buyer but as all you know if you want to dance it takes two to tango right and when you have a deep roster like this

Who are you looking to offset it’s not going to be marketing and I laughed like sometimes the fault of myself is going on social media and seeing what people report when it’s saying oh marketing is going to be up oh listen when you have a

Team and you have a good player and he’s under contract and he’s renegotiation eligible this coming off season and you can extend him how many more draft picks do you want you already got a ton and we’ll go through that in a minute here you build around those type of players

And when you have a deep roster with marketing and you’ve got Clarkson on a terrific contract next year that 1415 million and Colin ston is playing at a certainly in the last 19 games at an All-Star level and is on a terrific contract if you’ve watched these videos

Before those $20 million players are more valuable than max players and sa sexon is right in there um and you have all your picks from that you young players here and you’re kind of you know spoon feeding keontay George at point guard you’re not forcing him to start

And he’s playing 25 minutes and for you Jazz fans who are going to be mad at me because he’s not in our top 10 of the rookie rankings if he keeps on playing like this he will be um and we had that up on on espn.com with myself and Kevin

Pelton but when you are this deep what are you looking to sell to become buyers now you’ve got that town Horton Tucker contract cont I’m going to pull up uh the Jazz cap sheet here he’s on an expiring contract um in Utah at uh I think it’s right around 11 million

Uh let me pull this over here uh yeah $1 million for Talon Horton Tucker okay your own pick this year is going to the Thunder and we’re going to go through draft picks it’s protected um as far as what gets what will go and I’ll go through the Protections in a

Minute here he’s kind of your big trade chip so you can go out and maybe try to get a player making $17.5 million in that range based on the um expanded traded player exception rules here um in the trade guide that we have out I wrote

About Kelly Lin and listen I’m not the one who’s saying like you should trade Kelly Lin Kelly L’s in the last year of his contract he’s making $12.2 million no but if you’re looking to add picks or multiple uh seconds because you don’t only have two in the kitty

He’s your guy but why are you trading kol linic if he can come off the bench and help you and become and be a six-man even if the threat is that you’re going to lose him here so you go through the Lo roster yeah I mean John Collins’s got

Three years he’s been great you know at one time you thought man that John Collins Walker Kessler experiment is not working marking in three bigs you go through it Collins marinan seon alen Horton Tucker Clarkson and then all of a sudden you get to your young players right oaji Hendrick keante George H

Fonia who’s been great it’s going to be a restricted free agent Chris Dunwood would would have been a guy that teams would have been lined up for if Utah would have been in the tank here last year of his contract at the minimum I’d love Chris dun and Phoenix I don’t think

You’re going to get him you’re at seven semanic like you’ve got you know maybe kind of your back end of your guys you can piece together a deal if if you want to go out and do that but as I said like you are deep I mean this roster is 10

Deep here so I know we have to do trade in in the trade guide It’s you know it’s forced upon me because it gets people talking so we talk you know for me I would say pass if you’re Utah there’s no need to do a deal out

There but we do do one and it’s basically a Ola Depot for Town H Tor Talon H Talon Horton Tucker deal where maybe you get a first and you get a second round pick here I’m not doing anything in Utah regarding Kelly o Lin here I’m not taking that approach that

You did last year and rightfully so because I think this team and where this draft is right now is you go into the into the postseason and you evaluate your team in maybe two playing games or maybe you evaluate your team like Minnesota last year in a 1 18 matchup

And you see where you are and then you come into the off season here and you figure out what you want to do you want to renegotiate the marketing contract and bump him up like they did sa bonis and give him a max type deal great you

Can do that olenic a free agent Horton Tucker’s free agent you got a ton of cap flexibility again this offseason and where Collins is the only guy making more than uh $25 million here the Clarkson number drops to $14 million and you got 5 or six guys on rookie scale

Contract so just because you have the boatload of draft picks as I said doesn’t mean you have to go out and um you go out and do it and let’s let’s go down and and and and talk a little bit about their draft okay Utah and you can find all this next week

When we have it all out there um Horton Tucker for old to Old Depot and in two seconds that’s the trade I’d like to see it’s not going to get clicks but you know we’re not we’re not some of these other networks out there that just

Going to throw crap against the wall so you got they got 14 first round picks their own first is top 10 protected this year if it falls 11 to3 it’s going to Oklahoma City okay big deal who cares if you don’t have your own first round pick

You had three last year that basically counts they have five unprotected first 2 and 25 2 and 27 and 1 and 29 from Cleveland and Minnesota Timberwolves H will send them a 29 first that’s top five protected so you’ve got six in the kitty you got a 2027 first from the Lakers

That’s top five protected you can swap with um Minnesota or Cleveland in 26 and then Cleveland in 28 you only have two seconds so if you want to go out and and start adding more seconds then maybe it’s the Horton Tucker contract maybe there’s a deal out there that makes

Sense where you’re getting four Twos for Kelly o linck um but for me right now I’m in that observation period and let’s see where this Jazz teams it certainly could change in the next three weeks and we got 10 minutes I thought we’d only get five minutes on Utah but that’s in a

Nutshell as far as where this roster is I’m definitely not Sellers and I think for oin as I said like you have to weigh what he can help you on the court even for the next four months versus an extra second a couple second round pick so

That’s all we got we will be pumping more of these out in the next um in the next uh you know a couple weeks here we’ll probably get a Hornets uh uh trade guide video coming out sometime on Tuesday also we’re going to do two a day hopefully everyone has a great Tuesday

We will talk Soon he

  1. Thank you Bobby for being one of the few people at ESPN that recognize that other teams exists in the NBA.
    I hope your taking requests…
Can you speculate what the hell OKC will do with all those picks considering how good the team is already?

  2. Danny ainges isn’t gonna do any trades unless he is ripping him off, ainges doesn’t know how to do fair trades

  3. Not having Keyonte at top ten rookies is just plain wrong. He has the most assists among rookies. Plus one of like 5 or 6 rookies with a 30 point game. Crazy not to have him too 10

  4. I don't really see any problem with the jazz's current roster, they're great as they are right now. I mean, if it aint broken, why fix it?
It'll only ruin the chemistry if let's say they trade 1 or 2 players away and the the replacement needs to adjust to the system and build up chemistry with the remaining players again.

  5. I think they won't do any moves unless it really makes sense. For starters they have A LOT of draft picks for the next 5 years, that is not even trying to tank for the past years. They are all peaking at the right time and since the rotation is great injuries hopefully would be minimized. Now they just need to be healthy and play great basketball and try to be a contender. A lot of superstars out there that are getting frustrated. Keep the roster and the good culture they would be a viable option for any superstar that doesnt like the drama.

  6. Great analysis Bobby! What do you think about this DAL & Utah trade??

DAL gets John Collins & Utah gets Grant Williams & Richaun Holmes.
DAL gets more scoring help for Luka & Kyrie, and adds much needed size & rebounding.
Utah gets a playoff proven 3&D player, off long-term money, and another Center to eat up some of Collins left over minutes… Not to mention Danny Ainge drafted Grant Williams in Boston. Win win??

  7. What you are not aware of is how well Taylor Hendricks has been playing, I have seen him several times in the G-League, I feel he will an upgrade over Fontecchio or Olynyk. This summer Sensabaugh will earn a rotation position. They have 2 great rookies they cannot get on the floor

  8. Everyone saying to remain steady must be content with just being good the reality is even if you gave this team 2 more years to mesh they still would be just a good playoff team they aren't contenders and never will be with this lineup they need to make moves.
