Just play better! The New Orleans Pelicans should not learn the wrong lessons from loss to Mavericks

Is it as simple as guys like Brandon Ingram and Zion wison playing better or was there more to the Pelicans lost to the Dallas Mavericks and how does that impact the Pelicans at the trade deadline one thing is for certain we don’t want the Pelicans to have the

Wrong takeaways from this game it’s a Wednesday episode of lock on Pelicans let’s Go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team in New Orleans Pelicans in NBA part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day

Available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison at NOA Jake on Twitter here with youall on this Wednesday and I got a jam am packed show for you a couple of takeaways from Monday’s midday loss to the Dallas

Mavericks one was a 125 120 there wrong takeaways from this game I don’t want the Pelicans to fall into that trap so we’re going to break down why they lost and is there really more to it or is it as simple as guys need to play better

And of course thank you for making locked on Pelicans your first listen today and every day we’re here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this team whether it’s the trade talk whether it’s the X’s and O’s areas this team could improve

Evaluate and we cover it all here so subscribe wherever you get your podcast and on YouTube as well and become an everyday or listen Monday through Friday and support the channel that way and tell friends about the show if you listen two days a week listen three days

A week too helps keep this three five days a week for yall comment Down Below on YouTube if you are an every day so the 12510 loss to the Dallas Mavericks was very disappointing a a very disappointing game the least of which cuz they played a bunch of guys that

Didn’t play the game before when they won that one and then you get all these guys back and you lose and it’s a little weird right and honestly this was a big game you know this is one that would have could have determined the tiebreaker for the Pelicans favor

Against the Dallas Mavericks a division rival not that divisions really matter in the NBA but a team that you’re going to be fighting for playoff seating with and now if you end up with the same record you can’t point to well we the tiebreaker over them and so we get into

The playoffs over you or we get the higher seed because we beat you three times to your one they split the season series 22 now this was a big game and in the immediate aftermath of what was a disappointing game you could lead to the wrong lessons being learned the wrong

Takeaways being had we’re doing the show a day later because I had some personal things uh one personal thing just came up that I had to attend to and was not in the right head space to record the show so I needed a day and how doing the

Show a day later actually I think gives more clarity on this game and provides it being helpful right defensive rebounding was an issue in this one certainly so was Cory Kyrie Irving torching the Pelicans does a defensive Center fix that we’ll talk more about that in the next segment but if that’s

The direction the Pelicans are leaning I think that’s the wrong takeaway from this game because the takeaway from this one to me is simply put play better the Pelicans needed to have played better really as simple as that I don’t think there was a ton wrong with some of the

Execution or the scheme or the things that they’ve been doing they just didn’t play well they didn’t execute and in big games like this you have to you have to you don’t point to this when it their actual sticks to the game more so than another regular season game again

Because of the tiebreak and go well it’s just one of 82 these things happen we’ve said that after certain losses I’m not going to say that after this one you have to be better really as simple as that the first quarter the Pelican scored 17 points they were three of 17

Right that slow start that they had you just got to play better you got to make your shots it’s really as simple as that that’s not a lineup thing necessarily that’s not a scheme thing right it’s a you didn’t play better whether that was the team thinking that you know they

Were getting Trey Murphy back CJ McCullum Zion Williamson bringing him getting all those guys back and being like oh we’ll just steamroll through this team it doesn’t just happen that way kind of did in the second and third quarters but late in the fourth it got

Away from you and if you had a better start in the first quarter didn’t lose It 33 to 17 you can withstand that run and you’re up by more and it doesn’t matter and the Pelicans win the game right just play better you also have to hit your free

Throws right that’s not a scheme a lineup a coaching thing that’s just a simply like do your job the Pelicans missed 10 free throws in this game they were 31 of 41 they lost by five Zion Williamson was six of 12 he missed five free throws in this and a five-point

Loss that’s not going to get it done right Brandon Ingram needs to play better he was three of 14 in this game for 12 points he was 0 for four from three he was also 0 for five from the field in the first quarter he needs to

Play better and he’s on you know a rough streak right now when it comes to games the last seven games right now this is a guy who’s averaging just 13.1 points per game on 11.1 shot attempts he’s shooting 42 % from the field he’s shooting under 30%

From three you know he’s four rebounds that’s not going to get it done five assists is good and he’s getting some blocks and Steals and he’s been committed on that side of the ball but you’ve got to play better offensively it’s really as simple is that right

Brandon Ingram scores 20 points in this eight more something he’s capable of doing he shot 13 for 14 that’s 21.4% in this game if he shoots better if he’s not shooting 42% from the field overall these past couple of games you know maybe they win this game right guys just

Really need to be better with Ingram in particular this is why we I and others worry about his shot selection when it comes to that right this season you know we he’s known for loving the mid-range but I’ve said he needs to be taking more threes there’s a reason for this and I

Want to get into the kind of efficiency with it right look mid-range shooting worries me at times maybe you need that in the play cuz that’s what teams are going to give you certainly but you know if your shot selection is more refined in this game maybe the Pelicans can win

It too or it improves them and gets them a little bit closer and then others can pick up the other end of the slack this season from 16 feet to three-point range Brandon Ingram is shooting 46% that is the not a great number it’s not bad it’s

Not a good number that yields .92 points per shot attempt right you know you’re of those shots they’re worth two points times 46 46% that’s 9 two points per shot attempt from three-point range this year he’s shooting worse shooting 12% worse than from that long mid-range

Right 34% but because that shot is worth three you do three times point um or. 34 and that yields 1.023 points per shot attempt it’s a more efficient shot when he’s making his mid-range shots it’s fine it works right there’s certain areas where I trust them that kind of

True mid-range 10 ft to 16 ft he’s shooting 51.2% but those long mid-range attempts that number’s down for his career he only shoots 43.6% from there that’s not a good percentage and when you just go cold from that area like a lot of players do including Brandon Ingram

There’s only been one season in his career where he shot over 50% from that 16 to thre Point range right it can kill you and when he shoots 19% of all of his shot attempts come from there so let’s r rounded up call 20 one you know one out

Of every five shot attempts is from there and you shoot that poorly from them it’s going to lead to potentially bad things that’s why you want him shooting more at The Rim or more from three-point range where that points per shot attempt spot goes up but if he’s

Not going to do that he’s got to make these shots and he didn’t so he needs to play better this was you know they needed a team rebound and just actually stop ball watching and put bodies on people right this was a very winnable game if they just simply play better and

They didn’t and that was what made it super disappointing to me but I think that’s the takeaway was they just didn’t play well be better right there’s there’s nothing more to say about it but it does sound like you know this is a game that’s going to impact the Pelicans

At the trade deadline and we don’t want them to you know with with multiple things kind of tied to it if they go in the direction that it sounds like and it’s been reported I’ll tell you what it is coming up in the next segment I feel

Like that could be making a mistake if you’re the Pelican so let’s get into that a defensive Center and why I think that’s the wrong move coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m here to tell you about eBay Motors passion drive

Lockdown Pelicans your first listen today and every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this team apologies for no show on Tuesday again dealt with a personal thing that day we are back

Though a lot to cover we got a game tonight it’s a game day for the Pelicans we’ll be recording the show after the game maybe live from the court breaking down what we saw hopefully the Pelicans getting back to winning ways against the Charlotte Hornets should be a win let’s

Talk about what we see from him when that happens and then we’ll get more into the defense though we’re going to touch on the defense here hopefully later in the week I wanted that to be today’s show but now we’re talking about the the Mavs LW so the day off kind of

Skewed the schedule here just a little bit so let’s get into the reported kind of trade Target stuff for the Pelicans here and this comes from Christian Clark of nola.com saying the Pelicans are going to be looking at bringing in you know he says expect them to Target a defensive Center

So that they can play more offensive offensive minded lineups right that basically means Trey Murphy instead of herb Jones the from my read on that is this they’re worried if they take herb Jones out of the starting lineup and put in Trey Murphy that it won’t be good

Defensively and so because of that they’re they’re like we’ll the center position and then we can maybe start Trey if we get a defensive Center and we can take herb Jones out I think that’s a bad idea if the peasants look at this game and think because of the rebounding

Issues and the defensive stuff that happened and think a defensive Center fixes their issues I’m going to be upset I’m going to not think that that works because the way their defense works is this right they run a switching scheme you know there’s a couple of different

Styles of Defense you can do right there’s different things one of them you hear a lot is called drop coverage and that’s where they’re all kind of based around the pick and roll you know in the pick and roll the big man said the center let’s say sets a screen for a

Guard simple as that right you get the basic action of a pick and roll then they roll to the rim after that right the guard has the ball can either attack or toss it to the big man kind of for like an alley blob kind of thing

Whatever you want to do with that right the way you can defend that is with drop coverage right that’s the way yonas V chunis is most effective that’s you kind of sag off once that big man sets the screen your big man sags off and is ready there to contain like the dribble

Drive from the guard who is also being guarded by the other your your defensive player you also have a switching scheme which is what the Pelicans run and there’s other defensive schemes in this too and that’s okay when the screen is set instead of trying to fight through

The screen or dropping someone back let’s stay up on our Gods the only way to do that without that screen really disrupting you is the defender switch so the guard is being guarded by the guard the big man’s being guarded by the big man when that screen gets set the big

Man switches onto the guard and the guard stays on the big man so they literally switch right that works the Pelicans do this very effectively what switching does is basically you keep pressure on the perimeter and don’t give them any room to get downhill when a Defender is attached to your hip or

Right on you it can be tough to drive and attack and the Pelicans do this well they’re team that limits shots at the rib they are where’s the number here eighth best in terms of opponent uh frequency at The Rim so teams against the Pelicans it’s the eighth most shot

Attempts at The Rim in the NBA this season that’s a good number right that’s in the top 10 there the shots at The Rim are high efficiency shot but you know what if you don’t let teams get there it’s less of a problem isn’t it that’s

What they do they’ve done it well enough with Jonas Val chunis out there even though he hasn’t been a positive defensively but you also have Larry n Jr that when he’s out there on the court is switching and when you look at the lineups with him at Center their team’s

Defensive rating points per 100 possessions is much lower it works their defensive scheme and what they’re doing simply put Works they have as of today where is the number the ninth best defense a top 10 defense the switching works you know the Larry lineups are great defensively you have him on your

Team do you need to truly upgrade there when your team is ninth best despite people being in and out of the lineup CJ McCullum Brandon Ingram Zion Williamson are not thought of as Defenders yet they’re doing a good enough job right the starting lineup isn’t Elite defensively but it’s getting the job

Done and sometimes that’s truly what matters here so getting a defensive Center and then putting Trey Murphy in if you get a rim protecting Center but you don’t allow shots at the rim and that guy doesn’t defend on the perimeter does that help you or if they do help

You on the perimeter is is that a redundant skill set with Larry Nance Jr I think that it is so I’d rather this team invest their Assets in other areas I’ve listed the backup point guard position I think could really help them more Wing depth shooting even though

They have a lot there really could be an upgrade as well I don’t think they need to go into this area right one of the things I say with this is look at how they’ve lost some of these games and a lot of the criticism that I’ve leveled

And a lot of others have leveled at team is that sometimes they run too many defensive lineups and it’s not working they’re just not leaning into offense enough right if these defensive lineups were working would they have blown so many fourth quarter leads double digit fourth quarter leads they were up seven

With like seven minutes to go in this game and they still lost the game because there wasn’t enough offense out there right it doesn’t work so when you look at it from that perspective if defense was the answer you’ve been running defensive stuff it doesn’t work it doesn’t necessarily win

You the game by itself you need the offense you need scoring there too and when you have these defensive lineups they sometimes just don’t allow Brandon Ingram to operate like how he should for Zion Williamson to operate how he should right so when I look at

This is a defensive Center the you know the move over Jonas V chunis and then you start Trey I don’t think so just start Trey if that’s if you’re so worried about offense right or sub them in sooner I think you know this is a good defensive team because of the

Scheme that they’re running right teams don’t shoot well from three on them because these guys are up on the perimeter being able to contest that because they’re not playing drop coverage and things like that they’re not giving him the opponent’s space on the perimeter that allows him to be one

Of the top teams in deflections be one of the top teams in steals and things like that because they’re right there on those guys it’s working I say trust your defense here but play more offensive guys and just trust that things are going to work defensively one of the

Things to look at here is and I just moved from the numbers let me get back to that that’s why I had it sorted this way is when you look at their on court off Court impact right on the defensive side of the ball Trey Murphy is the

Second best the team is 6.3 points per 100 possessions better with Trey Murphy on the court on the defensive side of the ball he an offensive player right you know Larry n Jr is up there too but so is CJ McCullum they’re better defensively with CJ on the court than

Off by almost two points per 100 possessions you can get by with offensive players being out there right that’s what I’m trying to say here is your defense is working kind of no matter what and who you put out there maybe you need to trust that your

Offense can then get a bigger bump a bigger elev ation than your defense would by bringing in a new center and then running different lineups I think you can run those lineups now and still be okay with it the team just doesn’t seem to think so you know when I look at

The rebounding here that wasn’t great in this game but the Pelicans are still and they’ve been dropping slightly in this you know a top half of the league in terms of defensive rebounding percent they’re 13th as of today after that game which probably like knocked it down it’s

Not horrible it’s not great but you could also get better at that by just I don’t know having guys like look around bodying up people I don’t know if that’s like a defensive Center is going to Anchor that Jonas V chunis is a very good defensive rebounder there are one

Or two that just didn’t go his way in that game but when you look at upgrades I don’t know if you’re going to really find one in terms of defensive rebound percentage right last year he led the league in defensive Rebound in percentage uh grabbing literally 33 a3d

Of all available defensive boards when he was out there on the court he’s up right at 29% that’s a good number here he’s consistently above 30% in his career someone else isn’t going to do that it’s a team thing so I don’t think it’s one pos position so I think it’s a

Mistake unless it’s a true massive upgrade including offensively over yonas because if you put in trade but your Center gives you nothing offensively is that actually going to be an upgrade maybe but also that Center is then just going to key right in on Zion Williamson the defensive Center that’s guarding

Your defensive Center because there’s no offense there is going to be a problem so I just don’t know if that the way and I worry they’re going to look at this loss in one of their bigger games that they you know really wanted to win

Needed to win and are going to take the wrong takeaways away from it that’s what really concerns me after that loss and I think a day later talking about this having more clarity really think it boils downed this team just needed to a played better really as simple as that I

Wouldn’t make dramatic changes I would just look to upgrade other areas and kind of trust what you’re doing here for the most part because you’re going to go as far as those two stars three stars in CJ take you and now that we’re halfway through the SE season let’s evaluate

Them a little bit let’s talk about them kind of at the halfway mark have some thoughts I want to share of the kind of the position the Pelicans are in and what we look at their ceiling be being and maybe expectations for the remainder of the season the second half let’s get

Into that coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I want to tell you about better he because this episode is brought to you by better help you know around New Year’s we get obsessed with how to change ourselves instead of just expanding on what we’re already

Pelicans your first listen today and every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this Pelicans team we’ll more on the trade deadline talk the rumors everything as we get closer to that we’re about 3 four weeks away from that

That’s going to be here before we know three weeks really is kind of what it is I think at this point in time we’re also halfway through the season so we’ll be covering everything here subscribe wherever you get your podcast becoming every dayer we are part of the lock on

Podcast Network your team every day and of course for your second listing go check out Ross Jackson over at the locked on Saints podcast everything you need black and gold making some offensive philosophy changes no more Pete carmichel finally who are they going to hire Ross is going to be

Breaking it all down over there so we’re 41 games through the season the Pelicans are in a good spot 24 and 17 tied for seventh in the west you could have been six if you had won this game um and beaten the Dallas Mavericks but they

Have the same record as Dallas now 24 and 17 you know they’re they’re right in there in the mix for everything and so when we’re evaluating this team I’m honestly pretty pleased with what they’re doing they’re on Pace for I think 48 wins right now you could push

Towards at this point you know potentially getting for 50 wins if things break your way the schedule gets a little bit harder at times so that still might be a stretch but right now you know in terms of the fourth seed and home court advantage in the first round

They’re twoo games back they’re right in the mix of this right and I think when you look at it like that things are okay here but they’re going to go as far as their Stars take them right we can talk about needing an upgrade at defensive

Center what they could do at the trade line and trust me we’re going to talk about all that here on lock on Pelicans is what we do but they’re going to go down it’s going to come down to the stars and maximizing those guys it’s been a bit of

A weird season for Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson right bi’s going through a funky right now I think he’ll snap out of that but we definitely want to see him kind of adjust his shot profile to be the best version of himself that year that he won most improved player his

First year in New Orleans was an Allstar he took more shots at The Rim than any other time in his career I’d like to see that but they also need to then run more Shooters around Brandon Ingram the coach needs to help him same for Zion Leeson

Teams are Walling him off it’s why his numbers are down right I was on WWL Radio yesterday with Bobby abar and he was asking me like do is there a magic number of Threes you want to see this team take and I said no not really like

I think it comes down to this if Zion is hitting shots and is scoring at The Rim you don’t want him taking threes you don’t need other people taking threes let him keep doing what he’s doing till he struggles to score and then you need Shooters when he’s being walled off to

Make teams pay for doing that right that’s the thing I’ve been saying for years if you’re an everyday of why you need three-point Shooters I’m fine with him playing with Shooters if they’re not taking shots as long as their Court gravity pulling Defenders out if Trey

Has a man on him because teams are scared of Trey taking threes but because they put someone on him Tre is not taking threes that means more room for Zion same for Hawkins right so it’s all going to be about maximizing these guys you bring in you bring in Jared Allen

For Jonas valent chunis and I don’t think that’s going to make or break them for getting to the playoffs or not and whether they could win a series or not you know it’s going to be is Brandon Ingram playing well is Zion Williamson playing well right they need to work on

A couple things they need to work on team rebounding more I don’t think this is a yonas thing I think this is more of a team thing overall defensively I like what they’re doing we’d like them to you know score more and figure some of the offensive rotations out but overall

There’s a very good core of players and a team here and you could argue it’s one of the more talented they’ve ever had in the city so to be where they are I think is a good thing again 24 and 17 they’re winning 58 and a half% of their games

Two games out of home uh home court in the first round I definitely think this is a team that could be fighting fighting for that fourth spot I think if anything their realistic like ceiling where they probably end up something like that is probably fifth seed I could

See that but they easily could push for the fourth seed and get a homecourt game seven should it arise in the first round and I think that would be a really great thing the first two games of that series being in New Orleans would really set

The tone I like that they’re not where they totally should be right now you look at the Minnesota Timberwolves they have four more wins than New Orleans right now four is a lot but it’s also not that many you know does Minnesota have that much more room to improve I’m

Not sure if the Pelicans improve as we think they definitely win more than 58 a half% of their games right that’s you’re looking at a 66 win percentage 65% win percentage then if they get some of the offensive stuff figured out some of the rebounding stuff figured out right look

At how many fourth quarter leads they’ve blown so far this season this team’s not even close to being optimized or at their full potential reaching their ceiling and if they are they’re going to be winning way more than 58 and a half% of their games and that’s what they’ve

Won already so when I look at this I go okay this is why I’ve said I’m glad they’re not reaching their full potential they’re right in the mix of everything they’re technically only five games back of the one seed right now and they’re not even close to being as good

As they could be I like that if they were hitting their C if we looking at them and being like yeah this is all they can do and they’re here it’s not a bad spot to be in anyway but I wouldn’t think that they could potentially Make

Some noise in the playoffs here if they if they figure things out I definitely think that that’s exciting to me that means one we’ll have things to talk about what they need to improve if they’re improving how they’re improving hopefully and then like what they’re doing to show you that they’re improving

All the things so they’re in a good spot I think 41 in you know I think on this back half of the season the schedule gets tougher they’re probably not going to win even if they’re starting to hit their you know full potential at 65% but if they

Get close to 60 up that a little bit I think that’s all good that’s going to be a couple more games and it should lead to them pushing for 50 wins here I’m excited to see what they’re going to be capable of doing and if they grow like

We hope because we’ve seen growth from them we’ve seen growth from the coaching staff we’ll see if any big changes arrive at the trade deadline and look if they bring in Jared Allen I’ll be excited about that move I think he go should go in another Direction but also

Wouldn’t be necessarily the worst thing either so when and if that happens we’ll break it down here I’ll be excited about it and we’re going to talk about what they can do with this team and that’s why you should subscribe to lockon Pelicans part of the locked on podcast

The New Orleans Pelicans suffered a disappointing loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday but Jake Madison warns the team to not learn the wrong lessons from the game. 1. Dyson is too big of an offensive liability when he is in the lineup. They can build a wall around BI and Zion with him in. You need Trey/Hawk !

  2. I may get grief for this but Brandon Ingram is a low-key ball hog.. Please don’t get me wrong. I think he’s awesome and he’s one of the best basketball players I’ve ever watched but he needs to swing the ball around more because when he does we win games. And another thing why would he take the last shot of the game to tie it if he’s been cold all night??

  3. Why is my guy Zion just standing there watching his opponents crashing the board on defensive rebounds. I’m surprised he doesn’t attack the ball. He just stands there and looks at it. Is he doing that so he doesn’t get injured or what’s the deal here 😢😢

  4. Ingram stunk, Trey Murphey Stunk ALL GAME … Valuntunas.. stunk. and yes free throws…. Murphey and Ingram should have found the bench… Hawkins should have played… even more Jose… Ingram and Murphey looked listless. BI was horrible on the Defensive end.

  5. Pelicans play better without Zion, he can drop 30 all he want but he destroys the ball movement and the confidence of his teammates. he has no rebounding ability, mediocre freethrow shooter, bad defender, No jumper and can't play back to backs. he's too 1 dimensional. we don't need 1 guy who can just put 30 but we need 7-8 guys who can score double digits every game. so just trade him for an off ball player.

  6. Defensive rebounding has often been bad this season, and the stars are guilty of not boxing out the opponents. If effort is there but we shoot poorly and lose, I don't believe fans will be that upset. Watch teams like the Celtics, Thunder and Clippers. The winning team habits are ingrained in every player. Consistent effort, best practices on defense, no forced shots, few missed rotations, boxing out etc. No trade will help that unless you're trading the star… which is too drastic mid season.

  7. We need Markkendon….don't know what we should give up for him… he averages like 8 or 9 rebonds a game. Don't know what that would cost… Hawkins to me is more valuable than Trey, shoots off the bounce, young, cheap. Trey has length and he is a better defender. BI has been horrible at times but ti is hard to trade him because if he can get it together he is an All Star. Trade Kira, Picks, maybe Trey, BI or Valuntunos (a lot of money there… do we really want to bet on Trey and BI?)

  8. It seems you're drawing more off the statistics rather than the eye test.

Using the team's rim attempt deterrence and other defensive metrics to ignore Jonas's negative defensive impact.

Excusing it with, we have Nance Jr, and that he does well so we are fine with what happens when Jonas is on the floor.

Jonas gets forced into the P & R, he drops back giving either a wide open mid range attempt or they get right past him leading to a series of help defense and players leaving their defensive assignments; all climaxing to a pass to an open 3pt shooter.

Nance Jr is great, yet he lacks size and teams can take advantage via switching which causes similar negative results as the P & R with Jonas does.

There is less interior attempts against us b/c of how often Jonas gets put in the P & R or a dominant big man switches on to Nance Jr (which both have very little skill in guarding respectively).

A mobile defensive bigman with size who can score gives us an answer to both the weaknesses of Jonas and Nance Jr.

  9. So Zion with his 1 rebound 3 assist and 3 t.o 6-11 free throws in 32 minutes was great right?

Hawk who just dropped a career high 34 pints very efficiently against this same team and trey combined for 9 shots Larrry had 11 hawk and trey combined for 6 3s Larry shot 4 and jv had 5 shot attempts after going for 14p 12r 7a 2 blks against the same team 36 hrs prior.

I like How casual everyone is when saying BI need to play better then proceeding to say he only shooting 11 shots a game , Then blame his shot selection?!? Thats wild.
