Indiana Pacers reportedly talk Pascal Siakam trade with Toronto Raptors | Bruce Brown, three 1sts?

The cakam rumors return and they’re stronger than ever Pascal cakam the Pacers linked again this time with concrete stuff from the Pacers and back to the Raptors so many interesting Dynamics at play here and we’ll talk about all of them on today’s lockon Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers

Your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up y’all happy Wednesday and welcome into another edition of the lockon Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for

Forbes and Si and today man oh man surprise we have a lot to talk about big report coming out from the athletic today sham trania and Sam reporting together Raptors Pacers engaged in Pascal seak trade talks involving Bruce Brown and draft picks per their sources they list three draft picks as the

Number Bruce Brown is part of this and it also says stuff about other salaries because that alone would not be enough to trade so we’ll cut through all of this why this is really surprising to me from a reporting perspective where this goes from here what else we need to know

What else this could lead to blah blah blah blah blah you get the whole just this is big deal why is this a bigger deal and why am I a little surprised by this reporting I think that’s a good place to start for context right obviously this is a big deal because

We’ve heard for a while back at summer league if you’ve listened to this show I talked about it even I heard the buzz at Summer League about the Hawks were the the main team everybody’s talking about then but like the Pacers connected to se yakum right this has been a long time

Coming if anything it could have been even predating that but that’s when it really heated up and then there was some reporting this season about it and then during the Showcase there was even more and so it’s not surprising that the Pacers and Raptors and seak have been connected that’s happened for months

What is surprising and is new is what the Pacers would send to the Raptors and specifically naming a player Bruce Brown and draft piics in this headline and article from Amic and trania so why is that so interesting to me well usually it’s very unusual that players from both

Teams that would be involved in a fake trade get reported because sometimes how this works is a team submits or shares a trade offer with a reporter to you know drum up interest or you know stuff like that up offers elsewhere and sometimes it’ll come from other team or

Some it’ll come from the agent of the key player or a player in the deal so to have it from both sides is really interesting to me there’s also two people reporting on the article at the same time but that is just unusual and rare to me and that doesn’t mean

Anything more like we’ve heard some leaked stuff about what the kings were reportedly offering for seak and all that but that immediately made me go huh interesting so what does that what does that mean well it means that we know the salary would be Bruce Brown which is

Relevant because he is the Pacer’s highest cap hit this season with his $22 million salary he would once again be the one of the higher guys next year um but it is interesting to know that in this discussion right Pascal cakam right this second for the Raptors this season

A $ 37.8 N3 million cap hit the Pacers have 8.2 million in Max cap space you can do some backwards math the Pacers have to send out at least 29.62 million in a trade for Pascal sakam Bruce Brown is not that Bruce Brown is only 22 so they’re still

Missing pieces to this we’ll get to that in a second that is mentioned in the article from trania an Amic it says that includes Bruce Brown Jr other salaries and three first round draft picks League sources tell the athletic there’s a lot more stuff in here that we’ll get to the

First thing I will say from the reactions I saw this is definitely where I need to start three first rounders got a lot of surprising reaction from people three wow for a guy who could be rental yes that is a big number and depending on the quality of them I could react

Similarly but like what if it’s this year’s OKC pick and then two top 20 protected fixs in the future that seems like the Raptors would say no but like we don’t know that we don’t know what the trade offer is it could be this year’s two picks and then a really

Crappy one in the future I it could be three first go to the Raptors and then the Raptors send back like the Detroit second they just got from the Knicks or something like the pick quality is completely unknown what’s coming back is completely unknown without knowing the

Entire trade saying if three first is too much or too little is pointless completely pointless if they’re crappy first or crappy firsts and to use an analog for this a trade the Raptors just did 18 days ago 19 18 whatever they traded an anobi to the next and a

Reporting last year was that they got offered three firsts for an anobi and then they ended up getting the Piston second which is going to be Pi 31 as well as RJ Barrett and Emanuel quickley well pick 31’s almost the first but whatever that’s a crap let’s just call

That a crappy first Quickly’s worth more than two firsts he’s great right he’s a great young player and you have restrict right so you’re going to have them for a while right that is an equal to better package right so it it it’s not about the picks or what they represent it’s

About their value especially if the pcks the Raptors got offered for anobi were crap so without knowing the value and specifics of what the Pacers pick package is it is impossible to know if this is a good deal or a bad deal or something that even makes sense or

Something that is worth grading or critiquing right now that said Pascal SE as I’ve said before on this show and for the first time I think I said it was on 1075 The Fan is the Raptor forward that I thought is a better fit for the current Pacers of of anobi and yakum

He’s a great player right he can really score he can get into the paint he’s shooting better of late his threo percentage if you just looked at that you’d say h 31.7% and I would agree with you that’s a really low number let’s do some splits let’s just say for the last

Two months of the Season that’ be now since November 17th what if I told you that since then Pascal seak at 36% from three what if we start on December 1st what have I told you since then Pascal shakam is shooting 44% from three so his percentage doesn’t look good it is

Massively held down by just a disaster start a disaster start 23.5% for the first basically month of the season and then he really surged up from there and he’s a everybody knows he’s a great inside theork scorer he plays with great great Pace he’s got fun spin moves he’s still an efficient

Player despite this down Year from three his true shooting percentage of 60 is his second best ever right so he’s an efficient player he can self-create his shots I mean I don’t have to sell you on Pascal sakam he’s been an all NBA player two times he’s been an All-Star as well

Um he’d be a great fit on the Pacers to me offensively he would give them size defensively he’s not the defender in anobi is but he’s still a good Defender he has size and Mobility he’s great he would be a wonderful fit with the Pacers

And a and a guy worth trading stuff for because he’s good now the awkward part of this is a couple things one they have to actually match salaries like I said earlier Bruce Brown is not enough so there’s a lot to talk about with that we’ll start there and then we’ll do the

Picks and then we’ll we got a lot to talk about with this okay so Bruce Brown being included in this report is fascinating to me I already talked about that he makes the most so there’s still8 million short right there they not quite 8 million short so that means a couple

Things if it’s three firsts it’s possible that it’s just two players but if it’s just two players from the Pacers to the Raptors there are only three other players that when combined with Bruce Brown are enough salary for the Pacers to send out to get SE yakum and

That’s Miles Turner which that would be surprising to me buddy heeld and TJ McConnell right and maybe they’ be willing to do the last two names who are both potentially uh expiring contracts although McConnell is like a over half guarantee uh next season maybe they wouldn’t but either way they’d have to

Include two of those guys at a minimum and if they don’t include two of those guys then they have to include three players and their fifth highest cap hit this season belongs to Ben Maan and then it’s Obi Topp and jerus Walker Halbert and blah blah blah so I think that it’s

Either going to be two vets and better picks or maybe worse picks or I’m just guessing but to to keep put it in perspective if it’s not two vets it’s going to be more players it’s going to have to be at least three players like for example Bruce Brown Obi toppen and

Jordan War that’s two expiring and toppen whatever the Raptors think of him or Bruce Brown and Jaylen Smith and another salary like Ben Shepard maybe I don’t know I’m just explaining that from a salary perspective just knowing Bruce Brown is in it is where this gets tricky

Uh and know what the Raptors wanted of young players in their last trade they did with the Knicks also makes this interesting would they be interested in just straight up picks plus vets as a package maybe but if you’re the Pacers are you interested in that I don’t know

If you’re the Pacers and you’re getting past galaka can you suddenly play SE yakum and start Smith and have top in play and have n Smith play and eventually have room for jarus Walker these are other questions to ask as you think about what the rest of the package

Could look like so thing one that’s important to note I think is the salary matching part of this matters that’s that was the thing that the the thing that made anobi potentially more appealing than SE yakum even though I think seak is better and a better fit is

That he made much less money it was much easier to construct trades in this case even if Bruce Brown is in it as this report suggests could be possible if this trade even happens by the way we’ll get to that um it would take either one

Other vet or two other players who make less than TJ McConnell and then the Raptors only have one open roster spot you’d have to do a three for two trade so we’ll continue in just a second with way more who could the other players from the Raptors be what could this pick

Stuff look like what else is important in this discussion because I have notes I have thoughts I think this is all very fascinating before we do any of that though hey guys gotta really quickly talk to you about the lovely folks over at eBay Motors Pass and drive and

Obviously Sean Woodley is going to have thoughts on this and what he thinks of what the Raptors could or could not be doing again we will get to that I could just ramble for forever I mean I just started I just I have cap ORS that I

Talk to I just start going crazy with the messages when this kind of stuff comes out Sean Woodley’s going to have the Raptor’s perspective what they could be thinking what makes sense for Toronto as I said Toronto currently 14 players on their roster so two for one trade

Great but that involves either McConnell heal or Turner being the second salary I’d imagine the Pacers don’t want it to be Miles Turner so that leaves McConnell and hee who knows if the Raptors won either of those guys who’s left who knows whatever if it’s three players the Raptors would

Have to send back someone else so again this changes the calculus of your picks depending on what it is it also depends on how much salary the Pacers actually send out for example if it is Bruce Brown and Obi toppen and I’m just making up names Jaylen Smith right that is

Almost 33 million Pacers could squeeze back in a little bit more in that case maybe the Raptors want to get off Jaden M Jaylen McDaniels and his multi-year deal maybe they want to get off of uto Porter’s deal and the Pacers couldn’t there’s a lot of ways this could go but

A key name a key name to me to keep an eye on if this becomes a three for two if this even happens is Garrett Temple why well he that might sound boring and maybe it is he probably would have no actual playing impact for the Pacers

Although he is known as one of the better vets in the NBA because he’s on a minimum contract minimum contracts do not require um salary matching it can just be a separate part of it completely and then he could be included to make everything fit and seem great or he

Could just be waved and then reacquired if that is what it takes for the Raptor so he’s a key name to me to watch but again there’s two guys maybe they want to get off of or uto Porter again is a is a cheaper is guy that could be

Interesting Thad young former Pacer makes eight million that’s probably too high that probably makes things tricky but uh those are the key names everybody Scotty Barnes and hire in salary makes this extremely difficult from a salary matching perspective so from a salary perspective that’s what to know if if it’s Bruce

Brown and it probably would either be one of Turner buddy heeld or TJ McConnell as player two or it’d be two of everyone else on the Pacers roster to make the Sal work and if it’s that second group two players have to come at least from the Raptors thing to to note

The picks I I briefly mentioned this that without knowing the quality it’s impossible to speculate on what the picks could be right the Pacers have their own first this year which as I am speaking I will refresh tanon to make sure I’m not being a it’s tied for

17th with the Knicks and the Kings if the Pacers win against the Kings funnily enough tomorrow night that pick could be as high as 21 and a half game away from 22 right so it’s hard to know where it is but it’s around 20 last week when I talked about

The Pacers picks actually this was Monday on Monday’s show and I talked about the Pacers picks for a trade primary thing I it was 20th then the other pick they have is currently OKC’s it could end up being the Clippers depending on what happens that is currently 27th uh and could very easily

It was 29th last or two days ago when I talked about it currently OKC’s lost two games in a row so there’s a chance both of their first this year for example if they’re in it I don’t know what’s in it I don’t know anything I’m just just

Talking out Lou here are in the 20s right and if you’re the Pacers and you’re thinking about your assets jarus Walker was drafted eth right Ben Maad was drafted sixth top 10 picks or lottery picks are just way more valuable than those late first just as an example

And that’s why it would take so many is it could be really late like that for example and nard they love he’s better than the 31 quality but you can get good stuff with later picks so it’s really it’ll be interesting to see what kind of

Value those picks if again if this all happens could have but that’s important to know about the picks is the Pacers extra pick is not particularly good and their own pick is eh it’s fine middle of the draft is pretty good Raptors are a pretty decent drafting team although

Their current for Grady dick is not having a standout year so far but he hasn’t played much I’m not calling him any sort there’s no reason to Resolute his career um anyway that is what you need to know about the picks is that without knowing what they are it’s hard

To judge right it could be three top 29 protected firsts or top 25 protected firsts then all of a sudden you’re like oh what a steal that’s another so like it there’s no reason it’s impossible to react that said if it is three uh one of them almost certainly would be a pick

From the 2024 draft and if you’re the Pacers ideally this will sound silly because I did say I was speculating when I said that both 2024 picks would presumably be a part of the three and I still am speculating but strategically including both makes a lot of sense

Because of the steun rule if you don’t know what the stun rule is Ted steppan the architect of some old NBA trades they made a rule that you cannot trade first round picks in consecutive years so if you’re the Pacers you could what you could do is trade your crappy first

For 2024 and a 2026 first and a 2028 first and there’s your three first and you put put your protections on it and you’re happy and you’re done but then you can’t trade 25 or 27 or 29 you can only trade 30 and 31 and that would only

Allow you to trade two or three for the next basically year and a half right but if you trade both of the picks in 24 and then like 26 or 31 or whatever suddenly you could trade 26 27 28 and 29 and you can trade more the stepping rule is not

As prohibitive in that way if there’s protections you can even reverse protect stuff there’s just a lot of advantages to doing it that way that would seem significant to me and the Raptors uniquely uh have their own first round pick sent away traded this year to the

Spurs top six protected and you’ll never guess where the Raptors sit as of this talking and this report coming out how about sixth how about exactly sixth on the draft board tied with the Grizzlies half a game away from uh the Brooklyn Nets who would go to to the the Rockets

Half a game from Atlanta right that’s a tight race that’s scary and who knows what direction they want to go maybe they want to get rid of it but that’s noteworthy right that is noteworthy for their goals and what their picks could look like so who knows what they would

Want but that is extremely important to know is that they’ve lost four in a row and now sit at sixth where they would be in theory keeping it but that is a scary game to play for the Toronto Raptors so the picks we’ll see the quality is confusing the players we’ll see the

Salaries will matter the value of all that together is what’s going to make this interesting for example what do the Raptors want or value does OBI toppen mean anything to them does Jaylen Smith or Isaiah Jackson mean anything to them Jordan wara had a great surge with the

Pacers last year he cannot have his contract extended he’s going to be a free agent but does he mean anything to them just getting a look at him doing anything for them Andrew nard seems like a lot to give up Ben she does he mean anything to them right they’re they’re I

Mentioned the lottery guys Ma and Walker I wouldn’t include them myself but you get the just those guys value could do just as much for protections on picks as it could for actually getting a trade across the line so without knowing anything it’s really hard to say is this

Worth it or not for the Pacers right if it’s extremely well protected picks they don’t have to give up any of their recent lottery picks that’s great that’s awesome if it’s both lowly protected picks and some of those guys then it’s all of a sudden a lot scarier couple

More things I want to get to one from the report and two an elephant in the room I haven’t discussed yet Pascal siakam’s contract expires after this season we will get to all that to close out Today’s Show hey y’all have to really quickly talk to you about the lovely people over

And every single day for your second listen check out lockdown Suns why because one they just played the Kings the Pacers next opponent and two they had a crazy fourth quarter comeback crazy fourth quarter comeback Tuesday night 22 points in just the fourth quarter brenon clean will have more on

The Suns their miraculous fourth quarter they have not been a good fourth quarter team this year that was extremely impressive Kings good record not great Vibes uh Matt George of lock John Kings can give you more there and you’ll see them play the Pacers tomorrow night we

Continue here with this yakum stuff the last big thing I have not talked about yet is siakam’s contract I’ve talked about the value and what it means for salary matching the other thing we don’t know is what he wants what his future entails right so I will say this I’ve

Been around the NBA enough now sevenish years right to know this like like front office people mess up they’re not infallible right but they’re not dumb either the Pacers would not give up a ton of stuff for Pascal sakam if they thought they were going to lose him

Right if they didn’t think they had a very very good chance to keep him so I I will be making that assumption while talking about this stuff if there is a reasonable chance he would leave in free agency then I would not advise trading for him at all as the Pacers right so

That is obviously something to note his contract is going to expire at the end of the season but that’s not the only thing worth noting about his contract because he would be extension eligible of traded to the Pacers not one of those fancy fun long extensions but 5% raises

He makes close to his max right now it’s a decent nice slow bump right so what it would be is the maximum would be added to his current deal that the added would be two years 81 a. half million it’s not bad that is not bad but wow he want that

He probably wants a lot of years he’s probably about to get maybe the last big contract of his career his max if the cap goes all the way up would be five years 26 million that is way too much way way way too much uh I would not give

Him that I you just saw Kawhi Leonard for Pete’s sake get a sub Max steal which hey maybe that is encouraging teams to be more willing to bite the bullet on some of these trades either way I’m rambling here obviously him being on expiring is scary and if you’re

The Pacers and there’s a chance he leaves you cannot give up nearly as much as you would if you’re confident you’re going to keep him so I would I am making the Assumption not not saying this is the case but I making the assumption that if

The Pacers do this and are willing to give up a lot they either have figured out that they can extend sakam or they feel very good about keeping him wo reported back during the inseason tournament that the that tyres halbert’s doing the recruiting and part of that

Included that he could encourage guys to stay not just to come to the Pacers but to stay with the Pacers should a trade actually happen so I think that is also a noteworthy thing in this process is what that could mean for all this so it’s not just about luring guys in fre

Agency it’s also about you know keeping them so any ho that is the final factor of contracts and all that I think he fits very well I think those are most of the important considerations so what do we not know still the picks the protections how good those picks are

What other salaries would be included what other players could be coming from Toronto to make all this work and what do the Pacers if they get SE yakum how does their rotation change who would be playing or not playing and if once that’s determined are those guys

Involved in the trade so there’s a lot we don’t know there’s also a lot more in the report that I haven’t touched on yet for example uh the Raptors have been engaged in discussions with several teams on a SE yakum deal uh but the Pacers talks have gained some steam is

What is reported recently um with back and forth proposals made this is another part that interested me in this well the two sides have been described as being far along in the process according to those sources they have yet to finalize or agree to a deal I think that is very

Important to note in this is that perhaps that there’s nothing done yet there’s a still a decent amount of time till the trade deadline there’s no reason that it has to happen right now obviously the Raptors have lost four in a row but anyway there’s a lot that

Could still be uh coming when it comes to this entire process uh Michael gra who covers the Raptors on TV and in writing for sportset he said uh four hours ago I going be reading this I quote I don’t get the sense anything is imminent but who knows Pacers have been

In the mix for a while as I said at the beginning um then he said we’ll see if this gets pushed over the line or if it’s just a signed Market is ramping up I think that’s important thing here this doesn’t mean that this just BEC like

It’s rare that players from both sides get named like this this doesn’t mean it’s going to be the Pacers getting P scalak the market could just be developing and the Pacers now you know this is an offer that known and all that and that’s all great and it’s

Interesting and it’s a good starting point to talk about zakum going forward doesn’t mean it’s going to happen he could get traded to the Hawk still he get traded the Kings Still the Mavs are noted in the story actually um the kings are mentioned the Warriors are mentioned

As well as the Mavs so um it also notes that zakum is known to be against the Potential Prospect of resigning in Sacramento so that this is all relevant but if there’s other comp competing people and teams that’s a reason for this kind of stuff to drum up and keep

Going so there’s just a lot at play SE yakum can get a no trade clause with the Raptors he can’t get that anywhere else he can get five years from his next team he won’t be able to get that he’ll be able to get five years with whichever

Team he ends next season on he won’t be able to get that anywhere else there’s just a lot to know what he wants where does he want to stay what does he want to do all sorts of that if an extension is even possible what the protections on

The pics are what the other salaries are what other players could be coming from the Raptors then go that is every single thing I think you need to know highly recommend you read Sam amch and Sham trania in the athletic so my my take 28 minutes in let’s talk about me how I

Feel about this siakam’s a wonderful fit if the Pacers know he can stay I the only concern they would have is is he going to decline right he’s having his best efficiency ever his passing is similar to recent Seasons he has a new coach but like a lot of stuff about

Zakum suggest like maybe a tiny decline but he’s still fantastic right he’s still a fantastic player so if he can stay as a fantastic player for three years after the season is that worth it for the Pacers if it’s only two years is that worth it for the Pacers are they a

Contender what do they go where do they go from here there’s are questions they have to answer the other part of this I haven’t even gotten to because I don’t know the trade it’s hard to say but they could have actual luxury tax concerns if they get yakum for as cheap as possible

Depending on who goes out because they would have to resign him uh you know if they trade a bunch of Cheapo guys away along with Bruce Brown to do it that’s great but then it’s less likely buddy heal returns for example because of the tax or they’d have to cut McConnell and

Hope Jaylen Smith Ops out or Obby to at future be cloudy that’s all also an interesting part of this that can’t be known without knowing the trade and so what I think is if they get a sense of what siakam’s next contract would be and

That it would be with the Pacers I would do it I think he’s a great well I would do a I would be exploring a trade because I think he’s a great player and a great fit at a very strong position of need for the Pacers and in their style

And with it the the best Creator he’s played with in ages probably ever he would look great he would be a great player for the Pacers but without knowing those things and without knowing what the price is I can’t say what I would do but within reason of you know

Reasonable first Bruce Brown and the other salary notwithstanding that it’s any of the Pacers core young guys I think I’d sniff it around and accept something like that if I knew knew keyword new SE yakum was going to stay and that is why I think the Pacers front

Office has to know that stuff and that is why I’m making that assumption because anything anything else is extremely risky and extremely interesting anyway that is all fascinating we will see where this heads we’ll of course keep covering here unlocked on Pacers as is necessary as

More comes out and we have more rumors to cover and I still haven’t talked about the Hawks and Nuggets games I finally have finished watching them caught up on Pacers basketball perhaps I’ll find some time tomorrow if not we’ll talk some Kings Brendan Nunes should be joining us from the Kings PLL

He covers the Kings over in Sacramento sabonis halberton heel Duarte a game tonight there’s a lot to cover among those two teams we will talk seak later this week with Sean Woodley of lockdown Raptors and we’ll talk Kings game when it’s over so still a lot to get to still

A lot of basketball to be played but more sakam talk coming here on the lockdown Pacers podcast hope you guys enjoyed Today’s Show and new camera if you’re watching on YouTube uh still learning a lot about it so apologies if anything looks weird or out of place

With plenty more coming about the Pacers their season and their trades here on lockon Pacers stay with us till then everybody have a wonderful day

The Indiana Pacers and Toronto Raptors are reportedly engaged in trade talks involving Pascal Siakam, per The Athletic. Bruce Brown and three first-round picks would reportedly be included, plus more. Host Tony East breaks it all down. Does that make sense? What would a deal look like?

  1. Buddy Hield does alot for this team hes a knock down shooter from 3 and spaces the floor hes obviously not untouchable but if traded would absolutely be missed and it would show on the court. Bruce is good as well but think Pacers front office is realizing while good hes not quite worth his price tag and they won't be picking up the team option for next season

  2. I get it that we have a whole bench full of rookies and 2nd year players that we took mid-to-late first round and we don't need three morre, so I see packaging that with Brown ONLY because of his salary. I DON'T like packaging up a bunch of our young guys that are balling OUT, no.

  3. I'd take siakem n mcdaniels without a doubt ! If stix gotta go it hurts but we won't be able to resign n ijax been showin improvement so i think we keep obi
