POSTGAME REACTION: Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks 1/17/24
Know we they had three offensive rebounds in the first half they ended up with 10 so that’s seven offensive rebounds in the second half uh which gave them extra possessions um now mind you you know we we were doing a decent job early on of Defending without
Fouling uh I think they called six fouls on that back stretch uh down in the fourth quarter so put them on the free throw line uh late in the game which allowed them to score with the clock stopped uh so we got to be more disciplined and showing our hands again
You know give them credit for the way in which they play and they battle and they fought uh but again you know we’ve got to make sure we clean up the glass uh in the second half as well as you know knock down you know our free throws just
The same you know 16 for 22 while they were 20 for 22 those are the margins in the games like this and it’s been that way since we’ve been playing this team been struggling a b especially last minutes shot seconds left is that just kind of as
Sh he’s going to step into all of his shots with confidence you know they did a heck of a job on him defensively uh being extremely physical early trying to keep him out of his areas of where he gets downhill uh then he started turning the corner a little bit getting bumped
But he was able to finish some at The Rim again you got to give them credit for the way in which they played uh deante hits a tough shot at the end of the game how much how much in this game is control things that can control not
For ball the three times that you did at the end of the third qu like winning those Marin and that’s what we have to continue to understand it’s it’s never about that final shot you know you everyone wants to look at that and obviously it goes in and so now you
Don’t get the game but it’s ultimately it’s those early turnovers it’s the Box outs in the third quarter where they come up with three extra possessions those are the games that those are the things that change the game and we talk about the little details and in games
Like this that’s what it’s going to continue to be excuse me marel b a good portion of tonight I majority of the end there are they close to ref I’m just going to go back to whatever the game is telling me that’s a lot of what this is going to be and I
We’ll continue to feel it out as a group uh as we can start to get some practices at some point under our belt where we can continue to build and grow with the the camaraderie and chemistry of those guys on the floor but it’s not a dictator of whether they’re going to be
Or indicator of whether they’re going to be in the lineup or not what did you think of Jonathan just how he limited short amount of time this impact he make on Def I he does an excellent job I think he does a great job of protecting
At The Rim uh changing up with who he can guard he can guard one through five disruption at The Rim um sitting down and contesting shots impacting all shots uh came up with some big steals down there I I think he just does an
Excellent job for us and uh he is a game changer for us defensively it’s easier said than done trying to run uh Trey young and both the Shante off the line when they get to the basket you know guys are collapsing and it’s leaving guys open to paint were there certain
Adjustments that you wanted to see there as you know guys were consistently cutting into the basket and getting easy looks well listen I think we did a great job on them defensively from keeping them off the three-point line which was what what which is where they you know
They Thrive uh I I think we have to be a little bit more disciplined in the way in which we were coming helping uphill which allowed those lobs to Capella allowed those lob to um a cono you got we got to be a little bit smarter there but there’s these are lessons we’re
Going to continue to learn uh our guys are doing a a good job you know you hold a team like that to 106 was a high scoring offense but again we just the little things within the game we have to continue to grow and get better and with
A handful of games now kind of under markel’s U you know getting back on on the court really his job and his progression really in half court offense feeling a lot more comfortable getting downhill attacking the basket you know what are you just liking to see from him
So far just what you said his ability to attack the basket uh get down in the gaps uh create for his teammates finding guys as the defense collapses being able to find the right spacing on the floor team how has this team able to keep that defensive shape without the
How much to that you next yeah we have to again we’re getting great looks and it’d be one thing if we weren’t getting excellent looks each night uh but we are getting Great Looks these guys have to continue to step in um with confidence and and knock the
Shots down because uh you know Paulo’s generating two guys on the basketball he’s making the right play we just got to be willing and wanting to step in and knock their shots down saw amazing defense uh Kel slid his feet stayed in front of every everything
He tried to do and he hit a tough one contested one hand little midy I know he works on that but yeah there’s nothing more that you can ask out of Kell out of us you know on the defensive possession um you know I don’t think the game balls
Down to that one play but um there wasn’t much else we could do doing that you know sometimes just how the ball rolls how the game goes you got to keep it pushing you guys have been dominating the glass oftion into a lot of turnovers what kind of change made Down um I didn’t got to the free throw line I thought we Tred to do a good job of of not fouling and play solid defense you know without sending them to the line and uh you know sometimes you know you get a whistle like that down the
Stretch you can’t do much so um you know just continue to clean things up continue to learn um you know how we can do better ways of of not fouling and and you know getting out of the way avoiding contact whatever it may be um but uh yeah it’s tough throughout this whole
Lad trip you’ve been holding your opponent 12 below scoring after obviously man scoring only 102 uh what does that say about the team defense at this particular point of halfway Mar I think we’re doing a great job and we’re getting guys back uh in the mix um you
Know and it’s great to have them you know from ji Kell Dale uh you know everybody who kind of came in and played in that second unit who’s been out U you know did an amazing job of impact in the game you know you can’t ask for anything
More from your guys uh you know so just excited to get everybody back get everybody healthy uh you know be home for a little bit you know play in front of them in front of uh Kia Center in the crowd uh you know in our city and get some momentum back rolling
How important is it to kind of learn you know the kind of the markins and is the big shot it’s like you know turn and turnovers and turnovers that allow learn back in the game or know those fouls how is it to learn that those plays or kind of
The opportunity I mean she said it CH said we were walking down here you know it’s not uh it’s not always that last play um you know what I’m saying it’s a culmination of a lot of things you know that put them in position you know to
Have that shot have that opportunity um so yeah continue to clean things up you know I thought we did a good job today though you know and stay solid I thought we were playing good basketball the ball’s popping and moving um you know we a lot of times got really good shots out
Of good action so um you know just keep clean cleans up uh we missed a lot of good open shots uh you know we’ll knock those down and um you know keep it pushing you I don’t think you dwell on these too much you know you learn from
Them move on to the next one I know that’s been kind of a frustrating point for the first half of the Season you guys are getting good looks but they’re not do how you kind of kept the defensive energy up I know just kind of natural ination head how how you kept
The um shooting at G I think that’s the only thing you can do I me you look at see Hughes uh he got seven Great Looks uh you know seven tough misses you know sometimes you have nights like that so uh continuing to trust the process of things um you know
Not go away from it uh you know because we have a night where you know we don’t knock down a couple open ones uh you know keep doing it keep harping at it chopping wood carrying water and good things uh you know are going to come as a result you talked about
K he’s just such a great human being man and and he just is a calm a calming person you know and I know kale Kale’s been through the world you know and he has his own things going on but um what he brings to us when he’s out there is
Just like this it’s like a sense of Peace honestly um you know I look for him and and we have a lot of conversations we laugh a lot uh you know we talk hoop you know we continue to get better and figure out things as we’re on
The court so it’s been great to have him back in the fold his defense has been great um you know same goes for everybody who made making their way back right now so it’s very excited to get every way back um get back on this track
Uh you know with the whole group and keep it pushing try to picking up on that point of kind of getting everybody back and back into the lineup and everything is there a little bit of an adjustment period still kind of getting Wendell Mark and everyone acclimated yet
Again on the court uh a little bit but you continue to play basketball and you know we hang out with each other every day we spend time together um you know we we build up a great great chemistry you know and relationships um so that in the moments when we are figuring that
Out you know and it feels a bit off you know we can talk about it we can fix those things in the moment you know continue to get better um so I think it’s going to come with time but I mean we look good everyone look look good was
On the court I thought we played great basketball tonight just couple shots in Fall couple couple fouls that went their way and um you know they hit a tough one to end it you know and sometimes that’s that’s what it takes to you know to for
Another team to beat you I think that’s what it was tonight and last thing I want to ask though was at the end of the game I think it was about 30 45 seconds left you had a foul on Trey at the perimeter he was already in the bonus as
Well so there’s sometimes a little bit of that aggressiveness on the defense and sometimes come back and fight you you feel like that way sometimes defensive side yeah I mean I I I didn’t try to foul I understood I understood the situation time and score and um you
Know I don’t want to just play LAX you know and allow him to to drift and be comfortable um you know that comes with also not fouling like you’re talking about but I mean also It’s just sometimes not much you can do about that you know chuma wining had had W as well
I thought he played great defense you know and um you know a lot of respect to Trey you know I got a lot of love for him uh he’s a great player um you know it was just tough whistle down the stretch um so I got to keep your push
And learn from it um you know hopefully uh you know go back talk about it rep it out watch the film and uh figure out how we can better defend that without folling in a moment but yeah just got to learn from it
