In honor of Dekki – review CPR today – maybe we can save a life in his honor

I’m certain Dekki was given good CPR, but how often do we think we know how to do it and yet are not in practice? Let’s honor Dekki by brushing up on CPR and maybe save a life. There are important courses to certify, but these tips can help in an emergency.

Important to check for breathing, and safety and have someone call 911 and another look for a defibrilator as you begin CPR and keep going. Cycles of 30 pulses with 2 rescue breaths at 100 to 120 bpm. Songs that do this are ‘Baby Shark’ and ‘Stayin’ Alive’ (BeeGees).

Or read, but sometimes visuals help a lot as above.

* Check that the area is safe.
* Direct someone to call 911 and have someone bring an AED if available to the patient’s side.
* Place the person on their back on a hard surface.
* Open the patient’s airway with a [head tilt to slightly lift the chin.](https://www.appropedia.org/Airway_Opening_with_Head_Tilt_and_Chin_Lift)
* Look for pulse and breathing for no more than 10 seconds
* If patient is unresponsive and is not breathing or has abnormal breathing and no definitive pulse immediately begin [chest compressions](https://www.appropedia.org/Cardiopulmonary_Resuscitation_(CPR)#How_to_perform_chest_compressions) of **at least 2 inches in depth** ( or 1/3 depth of the chest in children or infants) at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute, allowing for full chest recoil.
* After performing 30 compressions administer two (2) [rescue breaths](https://www.appropedia.org/Bag_Valve_Mask_Ventilation), mouth to mouth, mouth to mask.
* After the two rescue breaths have been administered immediately resume [chest compressions](https://www.appropedia.org/Cardiopulmonary_Resuscitation_(CPR)#How_to_perform_chest_compressions).
* Repeat the cycle of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths and use the [AED/Defibrillator](https://www.appropedia.org/Cardiopulmonary_Resuscitation_(CPR)#How_to_apply_an_AED) as soon as it is available. Continue CPR until properly relieved by rescue personnel.

Could he really have been saved? I’m wondering what his recovery would’ve been like to if he survived.

Also a good PSA is to get annual medical check ups. While it wont find blockages, doctors can provide a % chance of a Heart attack based on combining other factors (like sugar, cholesterol, BP) that are easily measured in a full annual check up.

Just updated by adding some resources here:

Worth reading about The calcium scan test to determine risk level (this requires access to hospital)

The calcium scans are an option for people who are at intermediate risk. This intermediate-risk group includes people ages 40 to 75 whose 10-year risk of heart disease or stroke ranges from 7.5% to 20% (see /heartrisk for a calculator – this calculator is linked below)

Heart risk calculator (needs you to input some basic information)

Probably difficult to save in certain circumstances thinking of former Chinese prime minister even die from heart attack. That gentleman should have professional doctors around but still can’t save his life.

Also a fyi but compressions should be deep, enough where you can expect to break ribs. You are trying to replace the action of the heart after all.
