Masai Presser Reaction & Shams Charania on Siakam Trade | Raptors Show Clips
>> ALL RIGHT. MASAI UJIRI, RAPTORS PRESIDENT, AT THE PODIUM. >> FOR OVER AN HOUR. >> OVER AN HOUR. I THINK, HONESTLY, FIRST OFF, YOU KNOW, THERE’S JUST SO TO BREAK DOWN. HE COVERED SO MUCH OF THE TRADES THAT JUST HAPPENED WITH OG AND PASCAL.
EVEN WENT INTO THE HISTORY OF THE MOVES, JUST TALKING ABOUT THE TIMES THAT HE HAD TO MOVE ON FROM DEMAR DEROZAN OR MOVING ON FROM DWANE CASEY AND NICK NURSE. SO MANY GREAT QUOTES AND GREAT MOMENTS. WE’LL GET TO THOSE IN THE COURSE OF THIS DISCUSSION.
BUT I THINK REALLY FOR ME PERSONALLY, I THINK MASAI SPOKE WITH THE MOST VULNERABILITY AND HONESTY THAT YOU CAN SEE OUT OF ALL THE PRESS CONFERENCES THAT HE’S DONE. THAT IS NOT TO SAY THAT IT JUST MEANS THAT THERE ARE NO MISTAKES
MADE OR EVERYTHING IS ALL GOOD. BUT I THINK MASAI MADE A DECISION TODAY TO BE EXTREMELY HUMAN, EXTREMELY OPEN, AND I REALLY JUST WANT TO RESPECT THAT DECISION THAT HE MADE. AND THEN WE CAN TALK ABOUT THE REST OF THE MOVES. BUT TO ME THAT WAS A REALLY COOL
THING THAT HE JUST DID. >> AND, YOU KNOW, HE MIGHT HAVE FELT LIKE HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE ANYWAY. YOU CAN COME UP THERE AND YOU CAN PUT ON A BRAVE FACE OR THINGS LIKE THAT AND TRY TO BE COLD AND CALCULATING, BUT THAT’S
NOT WHO MASAI IS. THAT’S NOT HOW HE’S TRIED TO BUILD THE CULTURE HERE. WE KNOW HE FROM DAY ONE AND EVEN BEFORE, THE RELATIONSHIP HE HAD WITH PASCAL SIAKAM. AND THAT’S WHY HONESTLY THE REPORTING AROUND THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TEAM AND PASCAL AND EVEN MASAI SAYING HE
APOLOGIZED TO PASCAL FOR HOW THE COMMUNICATION HAS BEEN THROUGH THIS. THAT’S PROBABLY WHAT WAS MOST SURPRISING ABOUT IT. IT’S NOT THAT THAT’S HOW YOU TREAT A TOP PLAYER OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT THEY GO BACK SO FAR. I REMEMBER SITTING WITH PASCAL
FOR A STORY I WAS DOING ON THE LEAD UP TO HIS FIRST ALL-STAR APPEARANCE ACTUALLY. AND WE TALKED FOR, LIKE, I DON’T KNOW, AN HOUR. AND IT JUST KEPT COMING BACK UP OF, LIKE, YEAH, EVERY TIME I HAD A DOUBT OR THOUGHT THIS WAS MY
ROLE, MASAI WAS, LIKE, WHY NOT? WHY CAN’T YOU BE MORE THAN AN ENERGY GUY? WHY CAN’T YOU SHOOT THE 3? WHY CAN’T YOU BE A NUMBER ONE GUY? WHY CAN’T YOU BE AN ALL-STAR? THAT, LIKE, PERMEATED PAST HIS DEVELOPMENT STORY SO MUCH THAT
IT WAS A LITTLE ODD TO THINK THAT RELATIONSHIP WAS IN A TOUGH SPOT THIS LAST YEAR OR SO. MASAI WAS OBVIOUSLY VERY, VERY EMOTIONAL IN TALKING ABOUT THAT. HE WAS TEARING UP AT ONE WITH POINT WHEN ASKED ABOUT WHAT HIS FAIFT MEMORIES OF PASCAL WERE WITH.
HE SHARED TWO. HE SAID TWO PLAYERS WINNING — TWO AFRICAN PLAYERS WIN WITHING A CHAMPIONSHIP. I GUESS THAT MEANS TODAY OG IS BRITISH, NOT NIGERIAN. THAT CHANGES SOMETIMES. BUT WITH PASCAL AND SERGE OBVIOUSLY. AND WILL TALKING ABOUT WHEN PAT CALL IS, LIKE, 13 YEARS OLD AND
HE GOES TO A BASKETBALL WITHOUT BORDERS CAMP JUST TO VISIT HIS SISTER. HE’S TOLD THIS STORY. HE WAS GOING TO BE A PASTOR. THAT IS WHAT HIS FATHER WANTED FOR HIM, EVEN THOUGH ALL THE BROTHERS PLAYED BASKETBALL AND TRIED TO MAKE IT AS ATHLETES.
BUT HE WAS HEADING TO PASTORAL SCHOOL AND THAT BASKETBALL WITHOUT BORDERS THINGS PUSHED HIM TOWARDS ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYER DEVELOPMENT STORIES IN THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL. AND WILL, YOU KNOW, MASAI GETTING EMOTIONAL WITH THAT I THINK IS JUST — LIKE YOU SAID,
IT’S VERY HUMAN. IT’S BETTER TO BE OPEN AND VULNERABLE ABOUT THAT AND BE REAL ABOUT IT THAN ANYTHING, BUT I ALSO THINK IT REALLY HAMMERS HOME, YOU KNOW, THIS IS A DIFFICULT MOVE AND NOT ONE THAT THE FRANCHISE WEIGHED LIGHTLY. THIS IS NOT A WE’VE LOST A
COUPLE GAMES IN A ROW LET’S FIRE UP THE TRADE MACHINE AND SEE WHAT WE CAN GET. THERE’S A REASON THIS PROCESS TOOK AS LONG AS IT DID. AND RESIGNING WAS POTENTIALLY STILL ON THE TABLE. THIS IS A REALLY, REALLY HARD THING TO DO WHEN IT SOMEONE
THAT’S MEANT SO MUCH TO THE FRANCHISE AND TO THE SUCCESS OF THE TEAM AND SO MUCH TO MASAI PERSONALLY. >> YEAH. AND AGAIN, I THINK IN THE COURSE OF THIS DISCUSSION, REALLY WANT TO SEPARATE TWO THINGS. WHO MASAI IS AS A LEADER AND
WHAT SPECIFICALLY THAT REQUIRES IN TERMS OF HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO FOLLOW. THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE DOING AS A LEADER. HOW DO YOU GET PEOPLE TO FOLLOW. YOU GET VULNERABLE. YOU GET OPEN. YOU GET HONEST. AND THEN YOU GET TO WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID.
I NEVER GET A SENSE FROM MASAI THAT HE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME HAVING A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION WHEN IT’S NEEDED TO HAPPEN. YOU’RE TELLING ME ABOUT A GUY WHO LET GO OF DEMAR. LET GO OF THE COACHES. LET GO OF PASCAL AND OG JUST
NOW, DESPITE ALL THE THINGS HE JUST SAID. YOU NEED THAT QUALITY WITH — AS A LEADER. THAT’S ONE PART. IT WILL OTHER PART IS THE EXECUTIVE DECISIONS AS A BASKETBALL EXECUTIVE. AND I THINK ON THAT FRONT, IF WE MOVE TO THAT CONVERSATION, I DO
THINK THAT MASAI IN THIS ONE WAS A LITTLE BIT CONTRITE. AND ADMITTED TO THE FACT THAT, YOU KNOW WHAT? I WANTED TO BE PATIENT WITH THE GROUP. I BELIEVED IN THE GROUP. THAT’S WHY I PICKED LAST TRADE DEADLINE WHEN THEY WERE UNDER .500 TO ADD JAKOB.
HE FELT THAT WAS THE MISSING PIECE AND HE FELT THAT GROUP DESERVED ANOTHER CHANCE TO PUSH. I THINK ON A BASKETBALL FRONT WE COULD TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THAT DECISION. >> YEAH. >> AND I THINK THAT THIS IS ALMOST AS CLOSE AS IT COMES TO
AN OPEN ADMISSION — I DON’T THINK HE SAID THE WORDS EXACTLY OF, YOU KNOW, WE SHOULDN’T HAVE MADE THE TRADE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. >> HE SAID IF IT WAS A MISTAKE, IT WAS A MISTAKE, BUT WE THINK THAT’S STILL FAIR VALUE.
AND IT’S A FIRST ROUND INTO MID SECOND AND POTENTIALLY A HIGH SECOND. AND THEN YOU PAY THE FULL FREIGHT MARKET VALUE. BASICALLY THAT WAS FULL VALUE AND IT WAS WORTH IT. THAT GROUP HAD EARNED THE CHANCE THE PRIOR YEAR TO GET MORE THAN HALF A SEASON.
THAT’S SOMETHING I AGREE WITH, BUT YOU’RE RIGHT. THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE THINGS HERE AND ONE IS THE PERSON WHO’S STEERING THE FRANCHISE AND TRYING TO GET PLAYER BUY IN AND, YOU KNOW, HAVE THE CULTURE THAT SUPPORTS THE MOVLS. AND THEN THERE’S THE SPECIFIC MOVES.
ONE OF THOSE THINGS I CAN NITPICK WITH, BUT THE PERSON SIDE, THE LEADERSHIP SIDE, I REALLY CAN’T. WE’LL CONTINUE TO GET INTO THE SPECIFIC MOVLS. KATELYN COOPER IS UP AT 2:30 TO GET THE PAILSERS SIDE OF THIS. PASCAL’S OTHER AGENT JOINING US,
BUT YEAH, WE’LL HAVE LOTS OF TIME TO NITPICK THE SPECIFICS. I AM GUESS THE OTHER THING THAT MASAI LAID OUT AS IT PERTAINS TO THE TRADE MECHANICS, IS HE HIT THE POINT A COUPLE OF TIMES THAT THE OFFERS THEY GOT FOR O FWCHLT AND PASCAL NOW WERE NOT
SUBSTANTIALLY DIFFERENT OR WORSE THAN THE OFFERS THEY GOT IN THE OFF SEASON. I’M A LITTLE BIT SKEPTICAL ON THAT. BASED ON THE REPORTING I’VE BEEN ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER. >> ME TOO. >> BUT HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT MAIN POINT? THAT THE REASON THAT THIS TOOK
SO LONG, THE REASON THAT THEY, YOU KNOW, TOOK FRED DOWN TO UFA STATUS AND LOST THAT GAMBLE, THE FACT THAT THEY WAITED UNTIL EXPIRING YEARS FOR PASCAL AND OG, WHEN YOU HEAR THE EXPLANATION FOR IT FROM THEIR SIDE, DO YOU FEEL ANY
DIFFERENTLY ABOUT IT OR NOT REALLY? >> I THINK THE MAIN POINT OF CONTENTION IS SHOULD YOU HAVE MADE THESE MOVES AT LAST YEAR’S TRADE DEADLINE VERSUS THIS YEAR. >> OR IN THE OFF SEASON. BECAUSE I THINK THE OFF SEASON — FROM WHAT I PUT
TOGETHER, THAT WAS THE MOMENT THE TRADE HAPPENED. >> OKAY, FINE. BUT THEN THE DECISION IS MADE AT LAST OFF SEASON. HE SAILS HE BELIEVES IN THE GROUP. THAT’S WHY I WENT TO GET HERTL. HE BELIEVES A STAR PLAYER IS QUALITY. I DON’T THINK THAT’S NECESSARILY
WRONG IN A VACUUM. MAYBE NOT THIS KIND OF SPECIFIC PICK FOR THIS SPECIFIC CENTRE. >> AND THEY THOUGHT THAT PICK WOULD BE IN THE TEENS, RIGHT? LIKE, THEY THOUGHT THERE WOULDN’T BE A PLAYOFF. >> TOTALLY. SO YOU COULD TELL THAT THE
PROTECTIONS AND THE PICK, THAT THEY CALCULATED ONE WAY AND THE REALITY WAS A DIFFERENT WAY. SO THAT IS A BIT OF A MISTAKE FROM THE BASKETBALL PERSPECTIVE. OR AT LEAST A GAMBLE THAT DIDN’T REALLY PAY OFF. TING OTHER THING IS ONCE YOU MADE HE THAT DECISION, THEN YOU
WEREN’T EVER GOING TO MOVE FRED. IF YOU WEREN’T GOING TO MOVE FRED, OR YOU HAD JAKOB, YOU WOULD HAVE NEVER LET FRED ALSO MOVE AT THE TRADE DEADLINE. ESSENTIALLY THEY MADE TWO DECISIONS AT THAT TRADE DEADLINE. WE’RE GOING TO RISK FREE AGENCY
WITH FRED ON THE RISK THIS WHOLE GROUP WORKS AND WE CAN KEEP IT TOGETHER. IT DIDN’T WORK OUT THAT WAY. THEY GET JAKOB IN THAT PROCESS. THAT WAS THE TRADE DEADLINE LAST YEAR. THIS SEASON THAT JUST TOOK PLACE, THAT WAS THE TIME WHERE YOU HAVE TO MAKE THAT DECISION
AND BE REAL ABOUT YOURSELF. FRED HAS MOVED ON. YOU WERE ABLE TO BRING IN DENNIS WHO, YOU KNOW, HAS BEEN GOODISH, AS, LIKE, SIXTHMAN A FIFTH STARTER, YOU CAN MOVE HIM AROUND, WHATEVER. BUT REALISTICALLY THAT WASN’T GOING TO REPLACE, YOU KNOW, WHAT YOU NEEDED TO SEE IN THIS TEAM.
IN FACT, YOU NEEDED AN UPGRADE AT THE GUARD POSITION, WHICH WE SEE NOW WITH QUICKLEY ULTIMATELY. BUT WHAT YOU NEEDED TO SEE FROM THIS OFF SEASON WAS WE NEED TO NOW MOVE ON FROM PASCAL AND OG. BECAUSE CLEARLY THE BOOK IS TURNING.
AND YEAH, CAN I ASK YOU THE QUESTION ABOUT IF YOU’RE COMFORTABLE SHARING THAT REPORTING YOU’VE PUT TOGETHER ABOUT HOW THE OFFERS HE’S RECEIVED NOW, COMPARED TO HOW IT WAS. >> I WILL SAY THIS. LIKE, I DON’T HAVE THE HERE IS THE EXACT TRADE FRAMEWORK, BUT
I’M FAIRLY CONFIDENT HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN ONE OF THE PROSPECTS FROM THE PACERS IN THE OFF SEASON. THAT WOULD HAVE MEANT FEWER PICKS. BUT IF YOU ARE A PERSON WHO WOULD HAVE RATHER HAD ONE OF THE PROSPECTS VERSUS AN EXTRA PICK OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT,
OBVIOUSLY BRUCE BROWN WOULD NOT BE A PART OF THAT DEAL. THEY DIDN’T HAVE BRUCE BRUIN AT THAT POINT. SPEAKING OF BRUCE BROWN, PART OF THE QUESTION THAT FLOWS FROM THIS, MASAI DIDN’T GET TOO DEEP INTO IT. WE HAVE THE SENIOR NBA INSIDER
FOR THE@LET AND CAN STADIUM ON WITH US. THANKS FOR JOINING US, MAN. HOW ARE YOU? >> BLAKE, GUYS, I APPRECIATE YOU HAVING ME ON. >> GOTTA ASK YOU FIRST, LOOK, I KNOW YOU DON’T WANT TO PUMP YOUR TIRES TOO MUCH, BUT YOU PUT THIS REPORT OUT THE OTHER NIGHT.
THERE’S A LITTLE SKEPTICISM ABOUT IT AND THE NEXT DAY LO AND BEHOLD IT RIGHT. ALL THE DETAILS ARE THERE. CAN YOU PAUK US THROUGH A LITTLE BIT OF TUESDAY NIGHT YOU PUTTING THAT TOGETHER AND THE TIMELINE FOR IT ACTUALLY HAPPENING THEN WEDNESDAY? >> YEAH.
I HAD GOTTEN WIND OVER THE LAST 48-72 HOURS THAT THE PACERS AND RAPTORS WERE GOING PRETTY EXTENSIVELY ON BACK AND FORTH PROPOSALS AND IN THE WEEDS ON NEGOTIATIONS. MASAI UJIRI CALLING THE PRESIDENT OF THE PAILSERS KEVIN PRICHARD AND MAKING REQUESTS AND
THEM GOING BACK AND FORTH AND IT REACHING A STAGE OF, YOU KNOW, WHERE YOU HAVE THREE FIRST ROUND PICKS. BRUCE BROWN JR. AND TEAMS ARE AROUND THE LEAGUE THAT I SPOKE TO, LIKE GOLDEN STATE, SACRAMENTO, ATLANTA, YOU KNOW, TEAMS LIKE DALLAS, HOUSTON,
ANYONE YOU COULD THINK OF THAT COULD HAVE A STAKE IN THIS COULD HAVE A WAY TO GET PASCAL SIAKAM. THEY HAD BEEN SORT OF ON THE FRIFRY. THEY WEREN’T REALLY AS IN THE THICK OF IT AS FAR AS THEIR OFFER. SACRAMENTO WAS A TEAM THAT WAS
SERIOUSLY ENGAGED A FEW WEEKS AGO WHEN I REPORTED THAT THEY WERE IN PRETTY STRONG, INTENSE CONVERSATIONS. BUT THEY EVENTUALLY PULLED OUT. THEN IT BECAME ABOUT WOULD TORONTO COME BACK TO THEM. AND THAT NEVER HAPPENED. AND YESTERDAY, FROM WHAT I’M TOLD, THE WARRIORS AND RAPTORS
ACTUALLY TOUCHED BASE BEFORE THE PACERS DEAL WAS COMPLETED. AND BEFORE THE RAPTORS PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THAT DEAL. AND THE WARRIORS AT THIS POINT JUST DIDN’T HAVE THE PACKAGICS DIDN’T HAVE THE LEVEL I THINK OF INTEREST DOWN THE ROAD. I THINK COULD YOU HAVE SEEN
SOMETHING POTENTIALLY, BUT THE INTEREST I DON’T THINK WAS THERE. AND ALSO THE WARRIORS DID NOT WANT TO PART WAYS EITHER. I THINK THOSE FACTORS PLAYED A ROLE. AND THE PACERS BRINGING IN THREE FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS AND HAVING THE CONFIDENCE IN RESIGNING PASCAL SIAKAM.
I THINK ALL THOSE FACTORS PLAYED A ROLE IN THEM EVENTUALLY MAKING THAT FINAL OFFER. GETTING COMFORTABLE AS A FRANCHISE. WE VIEWED SIAKAM AS A CONTRACT PLAYER. WE’RE WILLING TO MAKE THAT COMMITMENT. YOU KNOW, INTERNALLY WITH OUR MIND SET. AND ULTIMATELY MAKE THE OFFER
AND THE RAPTORS FINALLY GIVE THE GREEN LIGHT AND THE OKAY YESTERDAY. >> I WANTED TO ASK, INDIANA OBVIOUSLY HAS A LOT OF APPROXIMATELIES PEKTS. IN ADDITION TO THE EXTRA PICKS THAT THEY MOVE IN THIS DEAL, WAS THERE DISCUSSION AROUND THOSE PROSPECTS FROM TORONTO AND HOW
SERIOUSLY DID THEY PUSH FOR THOSE? >> TORONTO DEFINITELY HAD SIGNIFICANT INTEREST. EVEN DOWN THE LINE. GUYS LIKE JALEN SMITH AND NEMHAR ARE. THAT WAS KEY FOR THE PACERS, KEEPING THOSE FOUR CORE YOUNG PLAYERS, AS WELL AS ISAIAH JACKSON, KEEPING THEM IN YOUR STABLE.
AND THAT MEANT PARTING WAY WITH THREE FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS. COULD YOU HAVE PUT IN A YOUNG PLAYER AND NOT HAD TO PART WAYS WITH ALL THOSE DRAFT PICKS? BUT THE FACT YOU KEPT THEM AND PUT THE PICKS IN, THAT WAS REALLY THE SQUABBLE THE LAST
COUPLE OF WEEKS. ONCE IT GOT DOWN TO KRUVENLG TIME THEY WERE VERY MOTIVATED TO FIND A DEAL FOR PASCAL SIAKAM. THEY UNDERSTOOD THEY NEEDED TO STRIKE ON THE ASSET AVAILABLE IN THE MARKETPLACE AND REALLY THEY BELIEVED THE OFFERS WERE NOT GOING TO CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND
THE FEBRUARY DEADLINE. THERE WASN’T GOING TO BE A MYSTERY TEAM. THEY HAD SCANNED ALL THE INTERESTED TEAMS. THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE THEIR FINAL OFFER. SOME TEAMS DID. SOME WANTED TO WAIT. EVEN MANY YOU WAIT, THOSE OFFERS WERE NOT GOING TO BE POTENTIALLY BETTER THAN THIS PAILSERS OFFER.
AND I THINK MASAI UJIRI, THAT RAPTORS ORGANIZATION, THEY LOST FRED VANVLEET FOR NOTHING IN FREE AGENCY. UJIRI EVEN SAID TODAY, FREE AGENCY DID PLAY A PART. AND I THINK FOR THE RAPTORS, IT WAS AN IMPORTANT THING CAPITALIZING ON THE ASSETS. NOW YOU CAN START TO RESTRUCTURE
AND RETOOL YOUR TEAM. >> ONE OF THE ADDITIONAL TRICKLE DOWNS WE COULD SEE HERE AND MAYBE THIS IS A LITTLE TOO EARLY IN THE PROCESS TO ASK YOU THIS, BUT BRUCE BROWN IS SOMEONE WHO MASAI JUST TALKED UP A LITTLE BIT. OBVIOUSLY THERE’S A TOUGHNESS, A
VERSATILITY, A CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE THERE. HE’S ONLY 27, A LITTLE YOUNGER THAN PASCAL. HE’S ALSO A GUY WITH ONLY ONE YEAR LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT AFTER THIS YEAR AND IT’S A TEAM OPTION. I’D IMAGINE THERE WAS SOME CONTENDERS WHO WOULD AT LEAST BE
CALLING AND KICKING THE TIRES ON BRUCE BROWN. IS THAT THE SENSE YOU GET AS WELL? >> FOR SURE. THE RAPTORS WILL GET CALLS ON BRUCE BROWN JR. THERE’S NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, HE’S A VETERAN IN THIS LEAGUE, JUST WON A CHAMPIONSHIP.
THIS RAPTORS TEAM ISN’T PLAYING FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP RIGHT NOW. I DON’T THINK THAT’S BREAKING NEWS. AND SO FOR BRUCE BROWN JR., HE’S A GUY THAT’S PLAYED IN THE LEAGUE AND HE’S ON A $22 MILLION CONTRACT, PLAY APGS FOR NEXT SEASON, THAT WAS ANOTHER COMPONENT OF THIS TRADE.
YOU GET THREE FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS AND THE ABILITY TO FLIP BRUCE BROWN JR. IN THIS MARKETPLACE YOU COULD POTENTIALLY FETCH A FIRST OR A BOAT LOAD OF SECOND ROUND PICKS. YOU SAW LAST YEAR AT THE TRADE DEADLINE JAY CROWDER WENT FOR FIVE SECOND ROUND PICKS.
SO HOW MANY CAN BRUCE BROWN GET EITHER SECOND OR ONE FIRST. MASAI UJIRI IN THE RAPTORS ORGANIZATION, I DON’T THINK THEY’RE DEAD SET ON TRADING BRUCE BROWN JR., BUT I DO THINK THEY’RE GOING TO GET OFFERS AND THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS.
>> I WANTED TO ASK YOU, JUST TO CIRCLE BACK TO PASCAL, THERE’S A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD HAVE MADE THIS MOVE LAST YEAR AT THE DEADLINE OR EVEN IN THE OFF SEASON AT THE TIME OF THE DRAFT OR THE START OF FREE AGENCY.
WHAT TYPE OF OFFERS WERE ON THE TABLE FOR THE RAPTORS IN THOSE TIMES? AND HOW SERIOUSLY DID THE RAPTORS EVEN COME TO MAKING THAT DECISION TO TRADING PASCAL IN THOSE PREVIOUS WINDOWS? >> SIMILAR TO WHAT THE PACERS HAD OFFERED, THE PACERS HAD BEEN
IN THE RACE FOR PASCAL SIAKAM AND OG ANUNOBY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW. THEY’D BEEN PURSUING THOSE PLAYERS. A LOT OF THE OFFERS, VETERAN PLAYERS, PICKS, BUT THERE HASN’T BEEN THAT OFFER WHERE WHERE YOU’RE GONNA GET A STAR YOUNG PLAYER, RIGHT?
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT ATLANTA HAWKS, THEY CAME PRETTY CLOSE. THEY FELT. IN GETTING A DEAL DONE FOR SIAKAM. THAT WAS FOR HUNTER, GRIFFIN AND UNPROTECTED FIRST ROUND PICK. WHEN YOU COMPARE THIS DEAL THAT HAPPENED NOW, YOU GET BRUCE BROWN JR., WHO YOU COULD FLIP
FOR MORE ASSETS, OR YOU COULD KEEP. AND YOU GET THE FIRST ROUND PICKS. COMPARATIVELY, YOU KNOW, I THINK THIS PROBABLY IS THE SLIGHTLY BETTER, POTENTIALLY BETTER. AJ GRIFFIN RIGHT NOW IS OUT OF THE ROTATION IN ATLANTA. BUT A LOT OF THE OFFERS, IF THEY
HAD PUT IN JALEN JOHNSON, OR SACRAMENT WITH KEEGAN MURRAY. IF THE WARRIORS HAD PUT IN MAYBE MOSES MOODY AND MULTIPLE DRAFT PICKS. MAYBE THAT GETS YOU IN THE RACE. DALLAS. THEY HAVE DEREK LIVELY. THEY HAVE A COUPLE YOUNG PLAYERS. DO YOU PUT THOSE PLAYERS IN.
SO THE RAPTORS DID NOT GET THAT DEFINING OFFER OF A STAR, YOUNG PLAYER. AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY CHOSE THIS OFFER OVER SACRAMENTO, OVER ATLANTA IN THE SUMMER. AND ANY OTHERS THAT SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS. >> WE’LL HAVE TO SEE NOW WHAT
THEY DO WITH THESE PICKS. MASAI SAID I DON’T INTEND ON USING ALL THREE PICKS IN THE DRAFT. THERE COULD BE MORE TO COME ON THE BRUCE BROWN FRONT AND A COUPLE OTHERS AS WELL WITH THE IF THAT HAPPENS WE’LL BUG YOU AGAIN.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME THAEFRP, BUDDY. >> THANK YOU. >> THANKS. >> SENIOR NBA INSIDER FOR “THE ATHLETIC” AND STADIUM CO-HOST OF “RUNNING BACK”. EARLY ON THIS RAPTORS-PACERS NEWS. YOU’VE GOT A NOTE. YOU GONNA SHOUT SOMEONE OUT BEFORE WE BRING IN KATELYN COOPER?
>> YEAH, WE’LL SAVE THIS FOR LATER. JUST A HUGE THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ON THE PROGRAM, SHAMS. IT NOT LOST ON ME THAT WE WE GET THIS OPPORTUNITY TO BRING ON EVERYBODY DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN THIS THING. WE’VE GOT THE AGENTS. WE’VE GOT THE TOP NEWS BREAKERS,
THE ONES WHO FIRST HEARD THE STORY. SO YEAH, JUST CREDIT TO ALL THE PRODUCERS AND YOUR PULL AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT. WE’LL TAKE A QUICK BREAK. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING IN. WE’LL CONTINUE OUR COVERAGE OF THIS AND LOOK AT THE PACERS SIDE
AND AT THE REST ARE OF THE LEAGUE AND COME BACK WITH MORE THOUGHTS ON PASCAL. FOR NOW A QUICK BREAK.

Idk masai seemed emotionally unstable. Gave away too much draft information. And none of those things are good from a leader. At least he took some accountability
The vulnerability that Masai showed during this press conference shows just how important Pascal was to Masai, and quite frankly we as Raptors fans should all feel this way. This is a guy who even through all the backlash he received was nothing but loyal until the very end to our franchise. You cannot get that kind of loyalty in the NBA and I will surely miss him.
THAT BEING SAID, I think everyone with a brain for basketball can agree that Masai let his emotions get in the way of good decision making. We lost what's now going to be a lottery Top-10 in this years draft for Jakob when we should have been sellers during the trade deadline last year, not buyers. If we were to have dealt Pascal earlier who knows what we would have been able to get back. Now I'm not looking down on the players we received, and the draft picks we received but I think all things considered we need to have a serious conversation about what direction we're headed in the future and who needs to be traded next.
Blah blah blah. F Siakam. He ain't here no more. He's history. No need to be talking about him. Good riddance
Serge Ibaka would be the second African player Masai was talking about, not OG; who was hurt the entire championship run
I agree but disagree. Whoâs better Fred or Quickley? Whoâs better Barnes or siakam? Whoâs better rj OG? See where Iâm going. We got significantly younger and the talent didnât really drop off. And we didnât have to pay 40 million for Fred or pascal. Giving up a first for poetl in a weak draft? What were you hoping to get? I think Masai made calculated risks that even if he gambled it was safe bets that didnât mortgage the franchise
I get the questions about why didnât Masai trade Siakam last year but I also understand there was a chance Scottie wasnât going to be a franchise cornerstone. The improvements in Scottie this year are far more impressive than last year. If Scottie hadnât made this last leap (especially in 3pt shooting) trading Siakam would have seemed questionable.
Based on REALITY like Masai mentioned, it seems like it was the right time to move on. With all the, "Is Pascal the guy?" talk from the past 4 years, Masai still believed and gave that squad a chance, just like he did with Demar. It's tough but thats how business is. Grateful for the past, and always looking forward.
So basically Masai personal connection to Pascal impacted his decision making had he not been so emotionally attached Pascal would hsve been traded last NBA deadline
There you go y'all…..Did you hear him??? The man basically said the Raptors were being offered marshmallows for a Maybach………and this was prior to this season…. So everybody who's crucifying Masai for not acting sooner, because you thought they'd get some young up and coming stars back……..well you got the right information now, and you were all wrong. Just like my man Biggie Smalls said if you don't know now you know!!! You want to be, but can never be GM's out theređđŸ
Yo this show is getting big đ„
Masai seems too emotionally attached for the cut throat job of being a GM/President
We are 5 years away from competing
Never have I ever heard "pump your own tires" đđđ
Never seen Masai show that much respect and compassion toward a player, it was emotional and we definitely will miss pascal! In masai we trust
We got to flip those picks for talent
Not watching tonight because itâs clown night
DeAndre Hunter, AJ Griffin and an unprotected? And this dude said nah, give me them 3 non lottery picks. What.
you dumb fans may not like Masai and think he's being too emotional, you need to realize, players don't come to Toronto to play for you fans or the city lol they're here to play for Masai and the culture he's created. Whether you like Masai or not, it don't matter. Whether you agree with Masai or not, you cannot deny there is no one else to fill his shoes or create the culture that is the Toronto Raptors today. He is one of the few GM/Presidents that care about the growth and well being of his players, that is the ONLY reason players want to come here or have any respect for the Raptors. When Quickley said first thing becoming a Raptor was the culture, you think that reputation just happened because its Toronto?
The raptors could had got more in the summer or last yr trade deadline.
The raps needed Keegan Murray or Mathurin. This move should have happened a while ago. Wasted seasons. Masai moves were moves I've made in NBA 2K21. Should have happened the draft year after Scottie Barnes became a raptor.
Masai fleeces Toronto, yeah
