GAME NOTES:
What a third quarter! We were down by as much as 17, down by 13 at the half, and came back to tie it at the end of the third. Lauri had 11 points in the third quarter alone. Whatever Will Hardy said at halftime really worked.
Jordan Clarkson had himself a ball game tonight. 33 points, 12-24 shooting, 4-10 from 3, 5-5 from the free throw line, a team high 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 turnovers. He was really impressive inside the arc, hitting floaters, and penetrating into the paint. Even though he had 4 assists, his ability to find the open man has improved so much. He also was fighting pretty hard for those rebounds which was nice to see. Houston was crashing the offensive glass hard all game, and so getting some rebounding help from your guards is always a plus. What a solid game from JC. Hit some big, big buckets down the stretch. He had an outstanding fourth quarter and OT, really helping our offense. I think he hit 5 of his last 8 shots he took tonight, but missed the game winner with 2 seconds left. Man, what heartbreak.
Sexton had a very good 3.5 quarters offensively, slowly tapering off late in the fourth and in OT, but played some solid defense all night. 11-26 shooting, 2-7 from 3, 4-4 from the free throw line, 3 rebounds (all of them coming on the offensive side), 5 assists, 2 steals for 28 points. He got burned a few times going for steals and gambling when it wasn’t necessary, but it wasn’t frequent. He played solidly on defense on VanVleet all game. He also did a good job of going right at VanVleet all game, knowing that VanVleet isn’t the best on ball defender, and helped get him fouled out in the fourth. Although Sexton missed the game-winning 3 and was blocked on a go-ahead layup with 30 seconds left in OT, I was very impressed with his performance. But man, that blocked layup was killer. He just wasn’t aware that Amen Thompson was right there.
Lauri really struggled tonight. 22 points on 8-18 shooting, 3-11 from 3, 3-4 from the free throw line, 9 rebounds (3 offensive), 3 turnovers. It seemed like he was really bothered by Jabari Smith Jr, Sengun, and Cam Whitmore. He still was making winning basketball decisions, making cuts at the right time, flaring out to create space, etc. Just needed his shot to fall a bit more. He went super saiyan in the third quarter scoring 11, but he didn’t get a single shot to fall in the fourth. Thankfully JC & Sexton were able to score down the stretch.
Kris Dunn got into it a bit with Jabari Smith Jr in the 3rd quarter because of a screen, it resulted in a double tech. I loved the intensity he brought, and was awarded with 27 minutes tonight, which is higher than he’s had the last 5 games. 10 points, 8 rebounds (2 offensive), 7 assists, 1 steal, and most importantly no turnvers. He had the highest +/- at +16, and closed the game which is something we haven’t seen this season yet (as far as I know). He closed the fourth quarter with Sexton, JC, Lauri, & Kessler. He had a wild block with 24 seconds left while up two to help us preserve the lead. What a great game by Dunn tonight.
John Collins struggled tonight on both ends. He only played 20 minutes, shot 3-9, 0-4 from 3, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 fouls for 7 points. When he was in, we didn’t have solid interior defense, and similar to Thursday’s game, his minutes we were outscored for the most part. He did finish with a +6, but in this case the +/- doesn’t tell the whole story. He didn’t start the third quarter and instead we started Kessler because our defense really needed help. He had a beauty OOB pass to Lauri to set up a dunk in OT.
Simone had a fairly good game in my opinion for what we ask of him. 4-7 shooting, 2-5 from 3, 5 rebounds (2 offensive), 2 assists, 10 points. He was tasked with guarding Dillon Brooks which I thought he did a great job on. It isn’t like Brooks is a big offensive threat, but he can randomly light up a game when the crowd plays into him. I feel Fontecchio helped him become a non-factor on both ends. He closed out overtime with Sexton, Clarkson, Lauri, and Kessler
Kelly Olynyk did not have a good game at all. 15 minutes, 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 fouls. It was pretty much the same story when he was in as when John Collins was in, there was a severe lack of paint protection and the length of Houston really took advantage.
Kessler didn’t light up the box score, but man oh man was he impactful. He closed out the game, had 7 points on 2-3 shooting from the floor and 3-6 from the line, but a major offensive rebound with 42 seconds left in the fourth, and big defensive moments on Sengun down the stretch. 10 rebounds, 3 offensive, 3 assists, 5 blocks. Very impactful game, and most importantly he played 32 minutes which is something we’ve been begging Hardy to do. We definitely needed all 32 minutes of Kessler tonight. He was called for a very questionable foul late in OT which fouled him out, Sengun was going right at him late in the game which hurt. Another thing, I want to see him work on his free throws, whenever he got the ball late in the game, the Rockets played hack-a-shaq on him. I don’t expect overnight change, just would love to see that percentage go up. Last year he shot 51.6% from the line, so far this year he’s at 49%.
Ochai had such a crazy defensive game. He missed his only shot, didn’t get a rebound, assist, or steal in 13 minutes, but he had a MONSTER 3 blocks. [Like look at this block on Smith Jr in transition](https://x.com/JazzLead/status/1748903608916316320?s=20). Just unreal. Still want to see more offense from him, I don’t want him to be an Andre Roberson type of player, I want him to be like a Danny Green or Shane Battier type of player. I need some sort of offensive impact, and I’m sure Hardy does too. The more offense he is able to produce the more minutes he’ll get assuming his defense stays up.
Keyonte played the least amount of minutes on the team with just 10, and it’s because he really struggled tonight. 1-3 shooting, 3 poitns, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 3 turnovers. He was getting exposed by Freddy V all game on both ends, it was one of the worst games I’ve seen from the rook.
Major credit to Will Hardy for adjusting on the fly and making big changes to our closing lineup, and our lineup coming out of halftime. I don’t think I’ve seen Dunn & Kessler play down the stretch of a close game together, but they did and it really helped our defense. We were down by 17 and Hardy knew that Collins, Olynyk, & George just weren’t playing their best tonight and put the best team forward. Also, gotta give my props to the players. We looked like a different team in the second half. When we started the game, we were losing the hustle battle, defense battle, and shooting, but we made the adjustments to get back into the game.
Some questionable calls late, but ultimately I think tunnel vision offensively hurt us. Sexton & Clarkson were both guilty of it with less than 35 seconds left in both regulation and OT.
Some pros of tonight: Collins & JC played really well off each other down the stretch, we outrebounded the Rockets, and we made strong adjustments to make this a solid game.
Some cons of tonight: We allowed 37 points to Sengun, had 17 turnovers, allowed 23 offensive rebounds, and came out flat yet again to start the game.
22-22. What a tough heartbreaking loss after coming back.
Also, I’ve had some people mention that they wanted some way to donate to me, so I created a Buy Me A Coffee. It’s linked [here](https://www.buymeacoffee.com/JoeIngles) and in my reddit profile, and it definitely is not required by any means, but I figured I’d throw it out there. I’m more than happy to continue putting these out for free, I love doing it and started sharing these notes just for fun. Go Jazz!

Thank God the refs decided the game was over ten minutes ago. Wouldn’t want to end of an overtime game to go against the wishes of Vegas or anything.

I am beyond confused at hardy calling timeout to let an injured jabari smith off the floor. Inexcusable mistake
ngmatt21
Frustrating loss, but what a game by Kessler. His defense alone kept us in this one.
Hopefully this is the breakout and confidence he needs to be the starter going forward
brig_pudding
Rockets tried to give it away and the Jazz said no thank you.
Thamor81
Stress game, but this was more on teamplay failure than Rockets being somehow amazing. Hopefully we haven’t lost our full groove we have had going for last 15 games.
MeLlamo_Mayor927
How hard is it to at least look to pass the ball to Lauri every trip down the floor? The hero ball by our guards was inexcusable tonight and it fucking cost us a very winnable game.
DoubtsAndHopes
The Utah Jazz guards are the limiting factor of this team, can’t afford to have two braindead heroball guards at the same time? Where was Dunn in the final minutes? What happened to making plays for the other 3 guys on the court? Deserved to lose.
xavieruniverse
Not letting Lauri just drive and draw a foul in the last couple possessions was crazy to watch. Was gifted that win a few times and we wouldn’t take it.
user_python
those two sexton open floaters and that last shot of clarkson towards the end I always knew those shots to get in but why for some reason in clutch time those shots just won’t?? man this is just heartbreaking and I see Lakers fans celebrating again, that’s the worst part.
satapataamiinusta
Not upset that JC misses that last shot. But why didn’t Lauri get the ball even once in the 4th? That’s just wrong.
Skararm
I donāt care that we lost, I care that we lost with stupid hero ball plays by Clarkson and Sexton. Lauri needs the ball in his hands. PERIOD.
thehelpfulcamel
That one hurts, especially with how close the Rockets are in the standings. Lauri HAS to get the ball more down the stretch. Kessler and Dunn were performing miracles on the defensive end but it didn’t help because Sexton and JC were just not it in the crutch
lopodo777
I just domt understand some decisions. I know its not morally good, But Will should not have called TO with Jabari injured, Lauri didnt touch the ball at all. How many offensive fouls were called on us? IDK man, we were this close, but too many things didnt work
RiPPn9
People blaming Sexton, but that timeout with .36 seconds to go was probably the dumbest thing to happen this game. Also, Kessler needs to hit his throws.
QuarterNote44
Ending on two bad drives, neither of which came from our all-star. Doesn’t feel good
Time-Ad-3134
How can you ignore your all star for almost the entire 4th quarter and extra time?? The hero ball in the stretch was absolutely disgusting and I can’t believe will hardy kept letting it happen even when we missed multiple shots in a row because of that selfish play. Self inflicted loss
MegaAltarianite
10/8/7 and a +17 for Kris Dunn. Maybe play him in tight situations over Fontecchio?
Careless_Tear2058
Tough loss as a result of a terrible first half and a lot of little errors in the 4th. That missed Sexton floater, Kessler missung 3 free throws, not getting Lauri more involved, a bad offensive foul by JC…. Players who all had solid games and really kept us in it, but a few boneheaded things here and there at the end just really cost us. Huge bummer. This was a winnable as hell game.
