The NBA trade deadline you can follow me on Twitter at Kevin gray Sports the Mavericks at 24 and 18 six games above 500 top six team in the Western Conference off until Monday when they take on Christos porzingis in the Boston Celtics Celtics coming off a difficult

Loss at home their first home loss of the season to the reigning NBA champion Denver Nuggets and you know Luca donic loves playing against the Boston Celtics throughout the course of his career I’m sure we’ll be excited to see the Celtics come to town on Monday the Mavericks of course having

Some unexpected time off due to the unfortunate tragedy that struck the Warriors organization with the passing of one of their assistant coaches so as the Mavericks continue to work to get ready for the game on Monday they’re hopefully looking to get healthy as well Dante exom back on the practice floor as

He continues to work back from his right planter sprain to help this team move toward the allstar break in a team that has gone through a lot so far this year overcoming adversity with a lot of different injuries yes they had the loss on the road to the Los Angeles Lakers on

Wednesday but at the same time a team that has dealt with injury overcome it and has not had a lot of continuity so far this year 24 different starting lineups for the Mavericks to their first 42 games by far the most starting lineups in the NBA this season and yet

And still they find themselves in decent position going forward for the rest of the year as long as they continue to get and remain healthy which has been a big question for them this year and even with all the success that a 19-year-old in Derek Lively II has provided for them

So far this year with a 20 and 11 so far this year when he starts for the Mavericks there is still help that this team could utilize based on the needs that they have on this team and you look at so far this year a team that yes

Shoots a lot of Threes makes a lot of Threes top five in both categories two guys in Luca dones and Tim Hardaway who have been two of the more prolific three-point Shooters so far this year when they make threes they win a lot of games when they don’t make threes they

Don’t win a lot of games and it’s ugly for them but at the same time they’ve been able to be a top 10 Pace team this year and most importantly they’ve been a top 10 offensive team while defensively we knew this team wasn’t necessarily

Going to be a top 15 team this season if they could hover around 16 to 19 and play close to average defense they were going to give themselves chances to win ball games every night and so far that has been the case over the last month or so they’ve been better defensively with

Getting deflections getting steals getting in the passing lanes and doing all the little things that will allow them to stay and remain in ball Gaze on the defensive end but with all that being said with the success of Kyrie Irving and Luca dodes on the offensive side the unexpected success of Derek

Lively the second so far this year as I mentioned as a 19-year-old rookie the unexpected lift that you’ve gotten from Derrick Jones Jr and Dante exom when he’s been healthy among others you’re still in a position where you could utilize some help moving forward for the

Rest of the year when you’re looking at the top of the Western Conference whether it be the Minnesota Timberwolves the Denver Nuggets the Los Angeles Clippers the Oklahoma City Thunder you’re looking at teams that have big front lines that need to be dealt with and if you’re the maveri you don’t

Necessarily have that right now even with Derek live II in the lineup and the return of Maxi CBA who’s going to be helping you with versatility on the offensive end but more so providing you some defensive presence on that side of the ball so let’s look at what still may

Be out there as we get closer to the NBA trade deadline on February the 8th when you look at some new reporting from Matt Moore of the Action Network he details a few names that could be on the Move two names specifically mentioned with the Dallas Mavericks and one name that we’ll

Start off with here that could draw significant interest from around the league if the Pelicans are actually going to move off of him and I’m talking about herb Jones of the New Orleans Pelicans a guy that goes 67 25 years of age a guy that choose 38% from downtown

Only on three attempts this year is their team’s best defensive player defensive rating of 11.7 this year long athletic provides range and guard multiple positions on the defensive end he’s an unrestricted free agent in 2027 currently under a 4year 54 $4 million deal the averag is around $13.5 million

Per season now of course if you’re a Maverick fan you would love to have the idea of having herb Jones on your team but you also look at your team you say Kevin we kind of have one of those already and Dereck Jones jior who’s had

A career year not only shooting the ball but providing the kind of minutes that he has for this Mavericks team as being a solidified starter in this lineup for the Mavericks and I say you know what I hear you there but at the same time herb

Jones would be an upgrade and when you look at the Pelicans financial situation with the likes of Zion Williamson Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum it’s going to be difficult for them to keep some of their role players and a guy like herb Jones is one of those that

Could be a casualty because of the financial situation that the Pelicans find themselves in and they’ve been playing well you know how well they’ve been playing you saw them come to the America Airlines Center during that baseball Series with guys like Zion Brandon Ingram and C.J McCallum out and

Beat you and then when they got back into the lineup the Maverick somehow beat them of course with Tim Hardway Jr and Kyrie Irving each going off for over 40 points in that game but back to Jones he would provide you significant athleticism and defensive ability on

That side of the ball but I don’t think the Pelicans would be inclined to trade herb Jones within the division given how important he is to that team a guy who averages a little over 10 points per game this year but again his defense is what provides you value there if you’re

Looking for more of that on the defensive end if you’re the Mavericks now another guy that I would find a little more keen to be on in terms of what he could bring especially knowing how much front Court help the Mavericks could use as a guy like Daniel Gafford

In Washington now Gafford goes 610 he’s also 25 years of age he averages 10 points seven rebounds and a block and a half in 10 career games versus the Mavericks and if you paid attention and you’re real Mavericks fan in the mffl you know how Daniel Gafford has gone

After the Mavericks over the last couple of years it’s played really well against them including last year where he averaged 10 points eight and a half boards and two and a half blocks a game against the Mavericks now this year playing pretty well in 26 minutes averaging over 10 points per game eight

Rebounds 2.1 blocks per game he’s a guy that right now is on a three-year $40 million deal 13 million per he won’t be an unrestricted free agent until the year 2026 and again at 26 minutes per game he’s got a defensive rating of 122 which is up from last year which was at

114.3 but what he does he provides versatility he provides rebounding he’s gonna block some shots for you and most importantly he’s GNA be guy that helps you on your front line where you need significant help and at 610 playing 26 minutes a night for Washington we know

How bad Washington is right now and how poorly they have played so far this year collectively as a team even with Kyle KZ are putting up some of the numbers that he is Washington is just a bad basketball team and Gafford would provide you really nice value and to be

Alongside a Derek livea II a maxi kleba Dwight pal yes who is much maligned on this team but so far this year has really been a really good passor on this team if you watched him he obviously provides the hustle and the energy and the effort coming off the bench but

Daniel Gafford would be an immediate upgrade to your bench and B on the contract that he has you can make some things Shake in terms of moving off of maybe a guy like a ran Holmes who has a contract that’s a little over12 million he has a player option going in the next

Year and if he decides not to exercise that that’s a contract that comes off of your book so if you’re the Mavericks that could be a contract that you could possibly use to move off of in order to acquire a Daniel Gafford and of the three NS that we’re going to discuss

Here Daniel Gafford for me would be the guy based off for the new reporting that Matt Moore is doing as I mentioned from Action Network that would be of most interest to me because number one he kills you already on the opposite side every time he sees you when he plays a

Mavericks but twoo he provides you the size the rebounding and the defense that could really help you especially with another backup big for the Mavericks now the other name that I’m going to mention here I’m not going to take too long on because well yes he would provide versatility as a scorer

All the other stuff and the baggage that comes with this player the Mavericks don’t necessarily need and honestly it would not be a good look for this organization and I’m talking about miles Bridges now again another guy a theme here who is 25 years of age and of course with the Charlotte Hornets

They’re struggling right now and could be real sellers at the trade deadline we’ve heard many reports about Gordon Hayward potentially being a buyout candidate Scary Terry roier possibly me moved on as well they’ve got got a lot to figure out in Charlotte based off of what they have and what they haven’t

Achieved so far this year and for Bridges he’s on a oneyear 8 million deal he’s going to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year he’s averaging almost 21 points per game seven rebounds he’s got a defensive rating of 119.4 but as I mentioned the domestic violence issues and everything

Else that comes with the baggage of a mil Bridges simply wouldn’t be worth it and you would be adding yet another Lefty just like herb Jones just like Derek Jones Jr that you already have miles Bridges even with the play and the production that he’s had this year would

Not be in my mind a good fit even at 67 he provides you a little bit more versatility in terms of scoring with his ability to get to the basket I’m not for the miles Bridges trade even with the minimal money that you’ll be paying him

For the rest of the year and then his contract coming off the books don’t necessarily need that and I think would be more of a distraction than anything else with the Mavericks which right now they don’t necessarily need so of these three names whether it be miles Bridges

Daniel Gafford or herb Jones the most realistic name of those three for me is Gafford and I mentioned why based off of what he brings and what the Mavericks could utilize him for and if that is the case I would like to see that move be

Made by Dallas again cakam is gone oan newbie is gone some of the names that you may have thought that the Mavs could be in play for don’t have necessarily the assets or the capital to do it Gafford makes the most sense you can move off of a couple of contracts to

Make the money work and he provides you exactly what you need based off of what your front line isn’t right now in terms of the depth and the quality of that depth so will the Mavericks make a move for a guy like Daniel Gafford it would

Make a ton of sense for them to do so and also be the lower level type of pickup in the trade deadline that doesn’t necessarily move the entire chemistry of your team instead if you were to make a big Blockbuster type of move while yes I was on the Pascal cakam

Trade you saw what it took to have to get him and clearly the Mavericks didn’t have that kind of capital to do it they’ve got plenty of ammunition to get Daniel Gafford and they wouldn’t have to necessarily move off of I would think a Tim hardyway Jr to make that happen who

Is right now your most attractive player in terms of any potential trades that you make so with our conversation today make the move for Daniel Gafford again 25 years of age 610 rebounds block shots kills you already so why not have him on your team to do the damage with you instead

Of against you and you wouldn’t have to move a lot I would think in order to get him based off of what Washington isn’t right now which is not a very good basketball team so we’ll see if they’ll make that potential move but I like that one of the conversation ation that we’ve

Had today let me know what you think of these three players any other trade names that you may want to consider as we get closer to the NBA trade deadline that you feel like the Maverick should make in order to improve their team and we’ll talk about them here on Kevin gry

  1. Gafford can't be in a Mav uni soon enough. Solid depth and insurance should Lively get hurt again. I wouldn't touch MB with a fifty foot pole and neither would Mav's CEO Cynthia Marshall. And I wouldn't blame her one bit.

  2. Gafford is a no-brainer. The Mavs should have drafted him in the first place so this is just "fixing the mistake."

  3. I wouldn’t mind Bridges playing for the Mavs. I know it isn’t politically correct to say. If he gets in trouble again release him. Gadfird sounds like a great pickup as well.

  4. I respectfully disagree about Miles Bridges. His baggage is no different than kp!! We gave him a max contract.kyrie comes with problems.and the. Mavs Have had there fair share pants dj😅 really. So I believe for that type of talent and price roll the Dice. automatic upgrade.if Doesn't work he's gone.the the type of talent we need .oh yeah and the head of coach.should get along same problem 😂

  5. would love to get both gafford and kuzma to the mavs. before yall start hating on kuzma i belive he's can be a solid defender like he was on the lakers, i dont blame him for not trying while playing on the same team with that clown poole

  6. I like the D Gafford idea, but why not to try to trade for a package including K Kuzma and D Gafford for the 1st and one young player (O-Max, Hardy…)for example and to solve both problems (wing size, backup big) and to do this trade without losing THJ I believe would make the Mavs tru contenders on the west

  7. IMO it won’t be clear what trade the Mavs need to make until the deadline bc they need to figure out where Maxi fits in. Can he be the big wing they’ve needed? Can he be the backup center they need? Can Powell be the backup center with Maxi next to him at PF instead of THJ at PF in the small ball lineups Kidd was putting him in? Powell and Maxi have worked well together in the past that. Also I don’t think you use a 1st unless it’s for a clear starter otherwise save it for the summer when you have 3 1st, expirings, and some combo of Green, Williams, Hardy, O-Max.. and then make your move
