Pop: “There’s more fundamental teaching done now than I had to when we were a championship caliber team. That was more decision-making during games, calling a certain play, looking for mismatches, the mechanics of the game of chess, bc those guys knew what they were doing— these guys are neophytes”

I know I wasn’t the only one that had to look up that word:

Neophyte: a person who is new to a subject, skill, or belief.

  2. qaswexort

He also trained up Tony Parker from a neophyte. Did people just learn more fundamentals back then?

This is why 4 year college prospects are still really good

“the mechanics of playing the game of chess”

because it’s pop he probably means the actual game of chess

Alright first of all you’re throwing too many big words at me. Now, because I don’t understand them, I’m going to take them as disrespect. Watch your mouth.

Pop going back to the basics with these guys

  7. AthKaElGal

It’s an indictment of the AAU when Pop says these kids don’t have the fundamentals. You can see the vast difference between Wemby and the AAU guys. to see the Center have better vision and passing than the point guards is absolutely embarrassing.

  8. Old man says these youngins don’t know nothing

The only fundamental you need is 3>2 yeet

  9. This is probably going to blow up. People will take it as Pop doesn’t like Players leaving college early and really what he means is the development system in the US, like AAU and programs like Kentucky, are absolute trash

This is what fans don’t understand about young teams like the Pistons. These guys aren’t even good enough to talk about rotations and X’s and O’s. They’re legitimately bad due to just inconsistency and pop gets it.

The game of chess, is like a sword fight.

You must think first, before you move.

I love how skilled and polished college players don’t get drafted but “talented with potential” players do and need to be taught fundamentals by the greatest coach in NBA history whilst being paid millions of dollars.

Great point.. disrespecting this man by taking about his age

Still believe David stern had it right when he wanted to eliminate one & done into 2 years of college minimum.

  15. This is actually a really good explanation of why some guys are good at coaching bad teams and not good teams, and vice versa. Two different skill sets.
