BILL SIMMONS: IF I WERE A PISTON FAN I’D BE GOING OUT OF MY MIND! AUSAR STARS FALL TO BUCKS 141-135

[Applause] Welcome to the Piston fanatic I’m your host Dave Dalton and I’m excited to share my passion and perspective of our Detroit Pistons as we go on this Fantastic Voyage together I’ve been a Die Hard piston fan since the days of Dave Bing and Bob laner I’ve also been

The varsity basketball coach of a very successful program in northern Michigan thank you so much for listening listening and I would really appreciate it if you would subscribe and like our Pistons lost a tough one today 141 to 135 but we got to see lots of cool

Things we’re going to talk about the game we’re going to talk about some comments Bill Simmons made on his podcast including if I were a piston fan I’d be going out of my mind but we’re GNA first talk about the game the our our bench was fabulous we um our bench

Scored 85 points tonight but for me the story was AAR to son he was magnificent and we’ve all been wanting him to get more minutes we’ve all been begging for it we and nobody could have even in my wild the streams I couldn’t have even

Hoped that he would play as good as he did tonight well I guess I should say shoot as well as he did tonight but he was spectacular on every every bit of the game and why why he’s been sitting on the bench is we’ll never know but the

Big thing is I guess Monty’s letting Ivy play and he’s letting thear play and that’s what matters and I guess he’s doing better so hopefully this continues to go on and you know it was tough today to overcome the the free throw discret SE it was you know they shot a million

They shot 49 and Monty talked about it at after the game so he said you know the other teams just can’t keep on running into people and throwing the ball at the rim and going to the freethrow line he said coaches are getting fined and he’s you know we

Talked about the Toronto coach and then Mike Brown got fined 50,000 CU he whipped out his laptop iPad or whatever it was and showed people some fouls that were not right but you know people recognize it man recognize it will he get fined he he kind of made comments

After the Warriors game and didn’t get fined but I was glad that he he spoke out but I I really want him to get a technical in the game I don’t know why I just like to see when somebody shows a little bit of passion but um and we

Played Without Cade so Cade is going to be back either Wednesday when we play the Hornets or when we play on on Saturday when we play the Wizards so those are two of the games you know that even a month ago I was hoping and projecting that we were going to win so

We it’d be great for him to be back for that game and the team’s been doing really good and it’s really open people’s eyes and um Monty they ask Monty after the game about what happens when Kate comes back and he says Kate understands that ji’s in a rhythm and

He’s good when he has the ball in his hands and that you know he thinks kage’s smart player he’ll kick the ball up to Ivy and and he’s he me he he can script some things he can call some plays and they can start with him with the ball in

His hands they they did it earlier in the season they had Killian play the point that’s another thing so Killian still starts and he he doesn’t do bad but he you know he scores Four Points he’s or he he’s a non-sc scorer and so he scored two points

And he Dr in there it is the craziest thing in the world he can dribble right in front of the basket and nobody is even guarding him it is just crazy to watch if you pay attention next game just to watch he drives right in the

Middle of the key and the ne nobody’s even trying to stop him and he just turns around and tries to kick it out or whatever but it’s just it’s just weird so we you know I just glad that we got to start um seeing AAR play more lately

And he’s been playing so well and it’s not going to happen every game Ivy is not going to going to play great every game you know we just you know we’ve had these games and they’ve been fun to watch you know we’ve been complaining it’s been not you know a lot of these

Games have been crampy to watch this year but you know lately it’s been a lot of fun to watch the games tonight’s game it was even unrealistic you know our our three-point shooting we were 21 for 37 and that’s unrealistic to you know but it still was cool and um Scala and

Galinari made some baskets and shot good but um Burks was on fire again so those were all all cool things so um it’ll be great if K can come back and I I hope he comes back Wednesday and and then we have everybody and it just makes you

Have more players it hurt having that stew there Stew’s you know we got some guys you know I I get knocks he went for five and he only played 16 minutes but you know I Stu’s a better player and most of the time so we’ll see what

Happens I don’t know how long he’s gonna be out I thought he r reinjured his toe but it’s his ankle so not sure how but did you watch assar tonight I mean he comes in the game right away he he offense the ball comes off the rim he

Jumps like two feet over the rim his arms are and he flushes it dunks it and he just was everywhere he guarded uh Lillard really tough he guarded as assar I mean jannis jannis is taking it right at him real hard and he just moves his feet holds his ground and jannis ended

Up falling down and it was Detroit ball so I mean he is he is special he is special and it’s fun to watch like I said don’t expect him to play this great every time two for two on threes and you know I just glad that he’s getting to

Play and so he you know he I been begging for him to play 30 minutes every game no matter how good how bad he plays I want him to play 30 minutes and same thing with um Ivy and so we’re going to talk more not today but we’ll talk when

Kate comes back what I think the location should be but I I’ve me mentioned some of it before but um we had 30 assists for the fifth game in a row so I know they had mentioned that the last time that the Pistons had four

Games in a row with 30 assists or more was in 2006 so I don’t know when the last time if that team ended up having five that was you know the going to work guys that was chony and rip still were playing on the team so um let’s talk about Bill Simmons so

Bill Simmons has a great podcast the Bill Simmons podcast cast and he had this midseason thing where he kind of ran through every team and kind of graded every team and he started out with the bad teams and started out with the Pistons and he said Monty’s making

80 million and the main reason that Eric spoler is getting $120 million because of Monty getting that much but he said Monty should give back $20 million for the way he’s treated and handled Jaden Ivy and given killing Haze the ball over him and whatever the cool thing is that

Simmons said that he he watches all the teams as much as he can and he has a league pass team a league pass is a team that’s not your team and Simmons was a it’s been a lifelong Celtics fan but he’s a he knows the whole NBA in the all

The history of it but anyway he still says the Pistons he still likes watching the Pistons and they have been fun like I said they have been fun he said he’s he’s taking out some teams that he doesn’t care to watch anymore the um Grizzlies and even the Spurs he said you

Know they I’ll just watch the Youtube videos of of Victor and because he said they’re not that much fun to watch but he likes watching our team he doesn’t like watching the Wizards play and there’s a couple couple other teams he doesn’t like playing watching play but

He still likes our Pistons but he says um you know they the so hilarious he called it hilarious the the way and other teams do it given vaguely that contract that stupid contract and who were we competing against and we all knew that and we all knew that we the

Last year of the contract should have been um Team option and even if we gave him 12 million a lot of people like he said who are we bidding against nobody and so and I still contend that bagley’s not a bad player and I mentioned last episode that his per 36 um Point

Averages is he averages 20 points a game per 36 minutes when he was with the Pistons he just only played 15 minutes a game but and he averaged like close to 10 rebounds a game for the Pistons and so his first game with the Wizards he he

Had 20 points 11 rebounds not a surprise to me and he was over for five on free throws and he’s a better free throw shooter than that so anyway but it was we we didn’t need to give him that contract and then then you know he’s

Talking about the irony of us having to give two second round draft picks to get rid of the contract that was a stupid contract to begin with so that is the mismanagement he said you know what do you what do you need to do to get fir

Fired he said he said all the people there should be fired and he you know talked about the incompetence that um Monty Williams has had and he talked about a lot of things but he said if I were a piston fan I’d be going out of my mind with how this season has

Gone so we have been haven’t we and he said because they are paying the most money to a coach that doesn’t know what he’s doing and he’s talking about Monty and you know again he’s put Ivy through a whole lot of crap and you know and it’s funny that he he’s taking credit

Now so he said he said Ivy has been resilient and allowed and allowed him to allowed us to coach him hard what choice did he have he had no choice he he believes he’s starting to show signs of the player they think he can be at both

Ends so Monty’s taking credit you know and we all know he showed signs last year we all talked about my appears that Monty never watched film of last year to know that Ivy could do what he’s doing right now he did it for a month and a

Half at least last year so um you know gor had to have a meeting with him and talk to him about rotations and talk about the young players needed to play and how that should be prioritized and then there’s the big organizational meeting that we’ve been hearing about

Where he just saw the light the light just came on and he realized they suggested that he play Ivy at the point you know he played like 3% of his minutes at the point the whole season up until now so um that so that’s a positive it took 42 games or 40 some

Games before he figured it out but it’s hopefully it’s going to happen I I loved what Stu said Stu’s again a great guy and you know he he doesn’t have to say this because you know I don’t know if he’d risk you know Monty thinking something less of him because he’s

Monty’s boy Monty loves him and he but he said he’s proud of Ivy and the way that he stayed with it and he’s a great teammate and that you know you could just tell in his sincerity how much that meant to him and so that that was really cool

So and I I I really do think Ste could be a valuable player on a coming off the bench on a good team but there is that trade that has been rumored and with OKC that they need to have a tough guy tough enforcer if they’re going to play in the

Playoffs this year because they just got chat they don’t really have any size and so there there been some rumor and they have this guy asman J Jang the 610 he’s 20 years old he was the 11th pick in 2022 they gave up three picks and you

Know I contend that the um OKC is the smartest organization in my you know I mean it’s really hard to Define that but as far as Drafting and getting picks and everything like that a lot of their guys that were drafted even lower have really panned out so maybe he will maybe he

Don’t but if we traded in for Stu that would be part of the throwin and we would get one of their 8 million first round picks they have so many first round picks in the next five years like 17 I don’t know how it’s it’s a lot so

That that’s a possibility but uh I want to give a shout out to Richard Burks he’s one of our listeners and he he’s the one that sent me the picture so if you go I don’t know if you I don’t know how to do things on Twitter but he he

Sent me a picture on Twitter so if you went to Richard Brooks and look search for him on Twitter he had a picture with AAR hand his left hand on top and behind the ball he got a great picture of that so thank you for that Richard happy

Birthday Bill lambir you’re a bad boy and it was fun watching you play and you brought a lot of toughness and Leadership and you were won some championships with the Detroit shock don’t forget that um but just before we end the podcast I wanted to just talk

About you know there was the death that I can’t pronounce his last name but they his everybody called him decky he was the assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and their team was all out to dinner and he had a heart attack and he’s only 47 years old and he has a

Family and he passed away and K said he’s one of the um most positive and Beautiful People human beings he’s ever known someone who brought joy and light to every s every single day with passion and energy and one of the players that rookie um Brandon pensy for the Warriors

Said the most important thing he ever taught him was just a smile and I I heard this podcast this one of the a piston podcast and there’s one sky after we played the Nets one game and immediately after the game I think Burks might have missed a shot but he I know

He made a bad turnover at the end of the game and they showed Alec Burks smiling and talking to one of the Nets and this guy podcaster piston podcaster freaked out because you know you know it’s it’s kind of weird I I couldn’t be nice I

Couldn’t be as nice as these guys are when I lose a tough game to another team I mad you know when I coached you know I Tred to be good sport but I and I you know I didn’t never spit any my hand and shake hands with anybody or anything

Stupid like that but I I I was upset and I I hated losing so I I couldn’t be as nice as everybody is but Alec Burks brings that smile you watch him every second you see him every second he’s been on the Pistons he’s had that smile

And he’s been just lighting it up lately so um anyway got to go through the box score 32 minutes for bogie and bogie was five for 15 so he did not have a good game five 15 is not bogey like he was three for seven on three six for eight

On free throws but he only had one rebound and one assist in 32 minutes and so that’s not good enough but he missed some shots again that he normally makes and he’s not going to always have a great game but for us to win we kind of

Need him to but he still had 19 points but he was minus 27 I think that’s like the worst on the team Kevin KNX only 16 minutes one for five three points Duran 30 minutes four for eight and you know playing against so Lope LZ and Yannis is

Not easy but my thing is he got zero free throws and I hate Lopez had one foul Lopez had one foul and I’m gonna tell you he I saw several times where he hit guys right across the shooting arm when they go up the shoot and he hits

Him right across the arm and it’s not a foul and it ticks me off so but anyway uh Jen only had uh he had nine rebounds and eight points Ivy did not have a great game so he he was good but 32 minutes six for 16 two for five on

Threes which is good um six rebounds six assists three turnovers 18 points but he still played good and again I’m just GNA say this over and over again to I’m sure you’re tired of it but this is all about watching assar and Ivy and Duran Cade and these guys get better and they’re

Getting better finally because because Mon’s finally giv him a chance to play and so that is a good thing so um Killian 17 minutes so he’s play him less and I know when Monty Morris comes back he should be not playing him at all and when Kade comes back even he should not

Be playing at all so but will he had five assists and zero turnover so that’s you know that’s something but he like I said he just dribbles in there and Monty Morris was a 38% shooter they said he he should be back every any day Cade Cade can start practicing he’s just they’re

Just GNA they always have a you know a ramp up to for players so but galinari had played 16 minutes he was perfect one for one on shooting and it was a three he made his only shot was a three five for five from the free throw line he had

Three assists eight points plus 20 so he looks like he looks like an old man out there he does and I know he’s had a lot of injuries and he is he’s 35 or 36 and he’s not he wasn’t athletic to begin with but he still he still still did

Okay so and and again assar was just that that was the highlight of the game for me 32 minutes 10 for 15 and he 10 for 15 that’s 75% and he’s um two for two on threes but still he attacked the basket repeatedly and he got hit across

By the arm by Lopez no free throws so that is just wrong so um five offensive rebounds he just gets the balls he just gets balls he you know they and even sometimes he doesn’t get them he tips them somebody else gets it but he makes things happen besides being just the

Best defender on our team so playing playing keep playing Mei that’s all we care about muscala 14 minutes four for four on threes and so again this game we were in it and we still lost but it was unrealistic I mean the odds of us shooting this good again you know

Shooting 60% on threes and at that high of volume is really slim but uh but still mcal played good he he does try hard he looks old and slow too but he um had um seven rebounds so that that’s good and um that’s he didn’t have seven

Rebounds he had one rebound and one assist 13 points they jumped over to uh Burks because Burks had a good all-around game 30 minutes nine for 20 a little less than 50% but he was 50% on three seven for 14 he’s just cooking and still drawing fouls eight for eight and

I don’t know some team some playoff team should want him but I don’t know I’m not I don’t trade him again I said I’m not I’m not giving Burks and bogy away I think they need to be traded um Bill Simmons thinks that they should have

Been traded that U bogy should have been traded last last trade deadline and I agree with that too but you know if they’re not going to give us a good offer I would just ass soon keep them and but if they give us you know something decent a young promising

Player or draft Point pick or both then we should trade them so um but Burk had seven rebounds six assists and 33 points he was plus 26 so the bench unit really was great tonight they and 85 points that’s crazy um we had only eight turnovers so that was great and we shot

47% 57% on threes but again the free throw line was a huge thing we out got outscored by nine and we got out shot by a million so that was tough so um anyway I just want to thank you again thank you very much for listening I

Again I think that uh Giannis he gets every questionable call he drives to the basket and somebody gets breaths on him and it’s a pow and that’s because he’s a star and he’s used to it and Lillard the same thing so you got two Stars versus

No stars and so that that was basically the big difference in the free throws but anyway you know I talked about um decki melich that was the assistant coach but I and I said all those things about him that Steve ker said and Brandon peski

Said but that’s the way we all want to be we all want to try to spend spread your smile light up somebody else’s life be the reason someone feels good about themselves and go Pistons

Ausar Thompson has 22 pts, 9 reb as the Pistons battled tough against the Bucks! Bench scored 85 pts led by Burks and team made 21-37 threes! Giannis, Lillard and the Bucks shot 49 free throws! discuss Bill Simmons podcast about the Piston’s mismanagement!

  1. I like the way Ausar play. I like that he's coming off the bench, as long as he gets his minutes. I'm tired of the refs cheating the Pistons. It hard to win when you are playing against the refs too. And yes, Monty needs to take tech to show that he is tired of it.

  2. You spend 8 hours a week watching the Pistons play on TV where you can't see all that much of what is going on. Monty and his coaches have year upon year of NBA experience. Monty and his coaches see the players in practice. They see who is putting out the effort. They see the players all day every day and much of the night. But YOU think YOU know better what player should play and get minutes. Get serious. Ivey played well the last two months last year, yes. But he played at 90% of his potential. Monty was simply bent on pushing Ivey, waking him up. You, on the other hand, want to give this lazy young punk a free pass.

  3. It’s really refreshing to hear several different media outlets and former players call out Monty for the horrific decisions he’s been making. Between what Monty was doing and a section of our fanbase turning on Ivey like they didn’t watch one dribble of last season (like Monty), it felt like The Twilight Zone. Good to see JI’s maturity afford him the opportunity, even better to see him take advantage.

I know it’s a long shot, but from the repeated lies and contradictions in press conferences, to being checked by your owner and front office, are there grounds for firing “for cause”? Like Al Davis did Lane Kiffin? He didn’t have to pay him a dime after firing him for his lies and insubordination.

  4. What does J I being in a rhythm have to do with anything? Cade is the point guard and the best player on this team. Also nothing I've seen from Ivey has looked better than what we've seen from Cade as the lead ballhandler. Now before any goofy claims I'm hating on Ivey this is not a competition post. This is pointing out the fact Ivey is our 2 guard and we need him to score. He has some passing chops but Ivey should be filling it up for us. The fact that they have to "split" ball handling duty is revelatory of the fact Troy Weaver has drafted a team of ill fitting pieces. For instance if Ivey and Cade are out backcourt why the hell did we draft Sasser when we needed wings that could space the floor?

  5. Thanks for the shout out Dave! Keep sharing the great content. I have another photo of Ausar’s follow through that I will share with you on Twitter. If the Pistons can work on improving his shooting mechanics it will skyrocket his potential.

  6. I think you said Bagley seemed to have decent numbers for the Pistons (both last podcast and this one)

my question is why trade Bagley

If he has decent numbers for a backup center, 12 million isn't a crazy number for a backup center

  7. This is why I scoff at the notion that the Pistons problem is Troy Weaver and the roster, the roster is fine, this team has been in tough battles with Celtics, Bucks, Nuggets, and just about every other top team in the league, they have the talent to compete, they don’t have a roster problem they have a coaching problem

  8. I was angry tweeting about this game. Dame and Giannis got more free throw attempts than our entire team combined. They also ended the game with 1 foul each and no player with more than 4 while we had 3 starters with 5 fouls by the end of the game.

  9. YEA, IM LIVID AS A PISTONS FAN! DID WE FORGET THIS DUDE MONTY MADE US THE WORST TEAM IN HISTORY WITH HIS ANTICS? 🚮 ITS IN THE HISTORY BOOKS… They need to put his picture front and center on that accolade. Gores won't fire anyone because his pride won't allow him to do it. Even after Troy admitted his mistake with Bagley, needing to GIVE assets away to move Bagley smh. Don't think everything is sunshine and rainbows just because Ivey is excelling despite Monty. Go Pistons.

  10. I try not to waste time imagining how different things might look right now if Gores hadn't gone around Weaver to hire Monty – and we'd instead got a young coach able to focus on developing our young core – rather than stuck in his own stubborn "my way or the highway" ego games. At least Ivey and Ausar are playing – even if Monty had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do it.

  11. 7:17 – That’s the point of why this downfall is so disheartening. The Piston are a legendary franchise. And if they didn’t draft Darko, they very well could be a top 5 all-time team in the NBA. Also, If it wasn’t for the phantom foul in the 88 finals maybe even another notch higher.

  12. You would think that for a coach getting paid over $3-million bucks "per win" that Monty could somehow find a way to summon up enough motivation to stand up once in a while – walk over to the refs and get in their face – and earn a freaking tech – when yet again we're getting completely hosed at the free throw line at home. Just saying.

  13. These free throws are getting ridiculous against the pistons. Offensive players initiating contact and the defense gets called for the foul. This is a huge reason we lose so much. We are playing the opposition and the refs at the same time. Sports betting has killed the nba

  14. ausar is so good bro 😭 i really hope our development staff gets it together and he actually peaks here in deteoit 😭

  15. Sorry for Wiseman. His raw skills are far greater than Kilian, but he just can't get desperately needed experience because he is not needed in the rotations and he is to humble — doesn't have an effectively pushy personality. Hope he gets traded to team that can use him soon.

  16. Troy has made a lot of mistakes but he’s done the #1 thing we needed the most—he got the young players. The problem is he doesn’t know how to build around it. Monty has been a nightmare—the losing streak blame is majorly on him.

  17. They traded Bagley before Knox and Stew. We need Bill as the head coach. I remember the time. When rip got the off ball screen from the paint. Caught the ball mid range and blazed. The team we have now doesnt have one go to play to get us a bucket. Its all iso. Then pass
