How to Set Your Franchise Back a Decade

How to Set Your Franchise Back a Decade

In the 201718 NBA season the Atlanta Hawks had a historically Bad season for their franchise winning just 24 games their fifth lowest win total in franchise history they didn’t have any Bonafide stars or young upand cominging players that you could be excited to build with for your future maybe John

Collins who had a better than expected rookie season but for the most part this was a team that didn’t have any prospects or pieces to build around but losing that many games and finishing dead last in the East wasn’t all that bad because it would position the to

Land a top lottery pick that was projected to be a stacked draft class with the likes of DeAndre Aton Luca donic Trey young Mel Bridges SGA and when the Hawks landed the number three pick in the draft despite the Kings jumping up in the draft lottery for the

Number two pick they actually ended up still getting lucky by way of the Sacramento Kings incompetence in taking Marvin Bagley number two overall and the Hawks had right in front of them what it was expected to be a once in a generation level Talent a kid who had

Been dominating the Euro league winning the league League MVP as a teenager over other grown professionals Luca donic was theirs for the taking and while they did ultimately select Luca they decided to trade down in the draft to move to number five a pick held by the Dallas

Mavericks which the Hawks would use to select Trey young a guy who they had their eye on from the beginning and as compensation for sending the Mavs the number three pick the Mavs would then trade their first round pick in the upcoming draft in 2019 which the Hawks

Would later use to select cam reddish with the 10th overall pick this was of course the Hawk’s second lottery pick in that draft and also having the number four pick but here’s the thing while Everyone likes to talk about how badly the Hawks screwed up and not just taking

Luca and sticking with him instead of trading for Trey Young And how that will always be one of the biggest draft night trades that a team wishes they could take back I would actually argue that it’s not just that trade alone that has led to the current state of the Atlanta

Hawks and seeing the mess of the roster before us it’s the multitude of missteps poor decisions and transactions that has quite frankly set this franchise back for years and there’s really only one way the Hawks can conceivably fix this mess and turn things around before it’s

Too late how you might ask well let’s talk about it but first a big shout out to the sponsor of today’s video Underdog fantasy if you haven’t heard Underdog already let me tell you about their platform real quick because I absolutely love this app it’s super easy to use and

If you’re like me and you like making predictions maybe want to win a little money on the side then this is it my personal favorite that I use on the app is NBA pick thems they have higher or lower on most player stats for any game

An exclusive offer if you use the promo code and one Hoops all one word you’ll get your first deposit doubled up to $100 who doesn’t want free money right it’s really that easy it’s also a great way to support the channel I’ll leave a link to the site and the code in the

Description if you’re interested and let me know what picks you guys end up making now while I think we all can agree unless you’re just an incredibly biased Hawks fan that trading Luca donic for Trey Young on draft night was a mistake now when it happened it didn’t

Seem so bad right because at the time while most assumed Luca and his game would translate perfectly in the NBA and he would go on to be a star- level player there was still some uncertainty of is this just going to be another one of those amazing Euroleague Players

Whose game doesn’t really take off in the NBA kind of like a Ricky Rubio who was incredibly hyped when he was 18 and was taking that League by storm and when he came to the NBA he was decent but he never really took off and became a star

Level player in the league and the other thing was the Hawks I mean they got that first round pick in the deal and only had to move back two spots in the draft to get the guy they had their eye on In Trey young a guy they knew was a stretch

To take at number three no one had young that high on their mock draft boards so instead you get a first round pick in the deal to get the guy that you wanted like really it wasn’t that bad of a trade at that time and let’s also not

Downplay the fact that Trey young would go on to be one of the best scorers in the game of basketball an elite level playmaker and an All-Star player himself like let’s not minimize that as if the Hawks traded Luca and got a bust in return You could argue Trey has actually

Exceeded expectations when a lot of people thought he was going to underwhelm in the NBA and would be too small to be effective but is Trey young a top 10 top five player in the NBA like Luca at such a young age no no he’s not

And as I mentioned it’s not the straight swap of Luca for trade that really set the Hawks back and will’ll even set aside the fact that they could have even traded in the draft to get Shay gild just Alexander because SGA fell far in the lottery anyway but it’s more so the

Fact that they didn’t make use of the first round pick they got in the deal for Luca and taking cam reddish who they later would have to move for pennies on the dollar in a trade taking reddish over guys like cam Johnson and Tyler her with the fact that they took DeAndre

Hunter fourth overall in that draft and then also giving him a big payday extension later on or how about taking a Kongo in the following draft sixth overall ahead of Tyrese halber or even Devon Vel or of course trading three yes three first round picks for Deonte two

Of those picks being unprotected that they owe to the Spurs now look while you could argue all of these moves were bad in hindsight you can’t necessarily say that they were poor decisions at that time because you don’t know what players are truly going to develop into at the

Time they’re drafted or if they’ll pan out and fit with the rest of the roster in a given trade but the biggest thing for the Atlanta Hawks that has set their franchise back for years to come I would even argue a decade’s worth and I know

It may sound odd but it was actually going to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021 the year the Hawks went to the e Eastern Conference Finals it was this incredible Cinderella Story a Hawks team that started off the season poorly I might add in 2020 so bad that they had

To fire their coach and had Nate McMillan come in after McMillan took over the Hawks turned their season around going 27- 11 to finish off the year after starting 14 and 20 they would work their way up to the fifth seed in the East and while most thought they

Would get taken out in the first round they surprised the NBA world and not only beating the Knicks handily in five games but then they would go on to take out the number one seated Philadelphia 7 Sixers in seven games beating Philly on their own home court in game seven a

Sixers team that was thought to be one of the title favorites that year and hell even in the Conference Finals they gave the Bucks a run for their money taking it to six games to the eventual NBA champions like really that run was nothing short of amazing for a team that

No one would have predicted to get that far at the start of the season and by the Hawks having so much success That season it gave them this false sense of belief that they were right there they were right there for a shot at the title

If they could beat the Sixers and go toe-to-toe with the Bucks and they had a younger team with players that hadn’t even entered their primes yet why couldn’t they be on a path to being one of the best teams in the league the problem though is not all runs like that

Are sustainable first and foremost as good as the Hawks were they were severely lacking defensively Trey young was getting away with a massive amount of foul baiting which the league would then go on to alter the rules of foul baiting they played a Knicks team that collapsed in the playoffs who hadn’t

Been there in over a decade and while beating the Sixers was impressive the Sixers had been notorious and that Still Remains the case to this day for choking in the playoffs and of course who could forget Ben Simmons crumbling in that series but because the Hawks thought

They were right there right there on a path of being a title team and with Trey young being that franchise player to build around to get them there they moved way too quickly thinking they were better than they actually were the fact of the matter is teams started to figure

Out Trey young they learn how to guard him better they learn not to fall for his attempts to draw contact to get to the line and they learned to just attack attack attack him on the defensive end because Trey wasn’t stopping anyone and wouldn’t you know it The Following

Season after the Conference Finals run the Hawks would disappoint finishing the year ninth in the East they made it into the playoffs by way of the play in otherwise they would have missed the playoffs entirely but then would get beat down in the first round by the

Miami Heat so what did the Hawks do they panicked well we’ve got to do something we’ve got this franchise player in our hands we went to the Conference Finals and then slid majorly this past season we’ve got to get Trey some help and we need someone in the the back court with

Him that will mask his defensive deficiencies so what did they do they made an all-in Type move to acquire dejonte Murray who was coming off an Allstar season in San Antonio and while I don’t mean for this to come off as disrespect to Marie because I actually

Love his game and think he’s one of the better two-way players in the game of basketball but Murray is not a player you trade three first round picks for I know goar that same offseason would later get moved for four and really five if you include Walker Kesler five first

Round picks but even goar shouldn’t have gone for that many picks either the biggest difference though is look at where the wolves are now compared to the Atlanta Hawks and the Hawks a team that could very well be on their way to the lottery both for now and for the

Foreseeable future are going to be sending out unprotected picks to the Spurs three first round picks for what I would call a fringe level All-Star player and a fringe All-Star player who doesn’t fit well alongside Trey young because Murray thrives more with the ball in his hands and playing point

Guard over the two and now you’re in a situation where the Hawks are sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference they’re getting blown out of games not not even looking competitive guys are visibly frustrated and now just after trading for dejonte Murray a year and a half

Later reports are now out that the Hawks are looking to move on from Murray which they’ll most surely not get that kind of return that they had to pay to get him but if you’re the Atlanta Hawks and over the cap team that doesn’t have much

Wiggle room to work with for the future with guys like young Hunter bogdanovich Murray and a kungu all locked up on pretty sizable deals for the next three to four seasons after this one the best course of rather than trying to salvage what they have and see if they can magically turn

Things around or just do a retool around Trey young and see if they can get back on track to where they were in 2021 the best course of action is to tear this roster down and yes that also means trading away Trey young you see while everyone is focusing on trading Deon

Murray because he’s still a high level player in his prime and the thought is well Murray just didn’t fit well with Trey the problem is the Hawks will continue to just set themselves back further and further if they try to build around Trey Young Trey young is your

Franchise player your number one option isn’t winning you a championship like as good as Trey young is and he is an elite player he’s still not that guy he’s not Steph Curry as much as Hawks fans would like to think that he is and the sooner the front office recognizes that and

Accepts the fact that he’s not that player the better because the longer they kick the can down the road the more coaches they fire the more roster adjustments they make to get the right pieces around Trey and they still don’t work the lower and lower Trey’s value is

Going to be right now you can get a big haul for Trey young who’s only 25 his contract isn’t very favorable on a Max steal but he’s a big enough name and enough of an offensive Juggernaut that you could secure multiple first round picks and potentially some young players

For and if you’re trading young you might as well just start over get maximum value for guys like Murray bogdanovich capella you start over now and build for the future because switching it up and getting different pieces around Trey isn’t going to make you that much better and yes tanking

Being bad doesn’t really favor them when they owe some of their picks to the the Spurs but if they move all of their highest valued assets the hope is that they would be able to obtain a fair amount of draft capital in return to set

Them up for the future so I hate to say it and I know Hawks fans are going to go nuts on me in the comments but what really has set this franchise back is building around Trey young and thinking that he was going to be the player that gets them multiple championships after

This false sense of Hope in that 2021 playoff run let me know what you guys think though and what do you think the Hawks should do to save their season let me know in the comments as always be sure to subscribe and I’ll see you in the next one

  1. Honestly the only thing that makes sense is trading Young to the Spurs for their 25, 26, and 27 picks back (though 26 is an unprotected swap, other two are unprotected picks). Otherwise they're just bottoming out to give the Spurs top 5 picks in 25, 26, and 27.

  2. hawks calls spurs bacc n say hey can i get my unprotected pics for trae young den flip murray to orlando for pics and anthony blacc n build around jalen johnson get a defensive minded team n kicc the can lol

  3. This is an amazing take. The problem with the hawks is Trae Young. If you really break it down, the main issue is that Trae can't play defense, which always gets him abused in the playoffs. He will continue to be an offensive do it all playmaker, but I don't think his talents can win a championship. He's not 6-3 200 lbs like Steph, hes like 5-11 170 lbs, which is just too small. Also that run was great but I think they just over performed.

  4. I agree, but I think it's 2 sided. The Hawks don't understand what they need around Trae, Trae doesn't know what he want's around him and honestly him as a 1st option might be a bit cooked. Dallas was kinda similar but I think Luka's a lot easier to build around. If they kepy Murray and Johnson, I think that'd be a core that could go places and they'd get some good stuff back for Trae. I'm sure it's just not something they want to talk about but if the Laker's were serious I think they'd get Trae over Murray. Yeah he's a lot more expensive but if you're trying to maximize what you assume is Bron's last year there, go big. Plus it sets the Lakers up for the future better to.

  5. I'm a hawks fan, since Nik ans Spud. I do agree and in my option we need to do both trades. Trade Trae to Spurs, and DM to the Lakers. I personally want to keep Jalen Johnson and build around him.

  6. They’ll be crazy to trade Trae. With the numbers he’s putting up, he will be a HOF. Try your best to build around him and hope he don’t want out.

  7. I love Trae Young. He's one of my favorite players in the league right now. However, the Hawks as a team are just so subpar that it's not worth watching them. (especially as someone from Europe lol) I'd love to see Trae stay with the Hawks but I don't think it's gonna work out unfortunately

  8. If Trae young is to stay, the 2 players they need to trade for is BEN Simmons and DFS think about it

  9. 3:15 Whoa whoa whoa, please don't diminish Ricky Rubio's game like that. He never really took off because of injuries, not because his game. Injuries diminish everyone from generational talents like Grant Hill to T-Mac to Yao Ming to vast potential players like Greg Oden. Doesn't mean their game couldn't hang in the NBA.

  10. U can KINDA say that virtually any trade the Hawks make won't be a win for them so long as they have Trae.
Not hating, just let me explain.
In no particular order, you will find some form of
    Trae
    Harden
    Luka
1 2 & 3 in what I like to call "ball hog" stats (which I know, sounds like I'm hating lol)
What I mean is they always are in the top 3 of stats like possessions, seconds per possession, shots per possessions, possessions per 48, etc.
So if u are even a 2nd scoring option on ur team, scoring say 18 game on around 15 or so shots a game, give or take a couple, then u get traded to the Hawks… well, u can take it to the bank that your numbers are going down, because of how awesome and ball dominant Trae is (the irony is he is usually good for 8.5+ dimes a game every year).
E.G., coincidentally enough, Brunson on the Mavs with Luka vs Brunson on the Knicks. Guy is a superstar. Maybe not LeBron or Tatum level, but he IS a superstar, even if he is the last player in that tier.
He was never gonna be that in Dallas.
And that's not a knock onhim, Luka, the Mavs, etc. It's just the nature of being teammates with Luka.
I am a knicks fan and I'll fully admit all day that despite my feelBrunson, he aont as talented as Kyrie. And u habe to be Kyrie level of talent to still be THAT with a stud likeLuka. Jyrie still dropping 25 a night on 19½ shots a game….but it's down from his norm, albeit VERY slight.
So unless Atl moves Trae (probably shouldn't do that), or is able to get a Kyrie level or better superstar beside him, if u wanna get crazy and go overboard, a guy like Embiid would be perfect. Staying with big men, and great fitting big men, though not on that level, a Sengun, a Sabonis…those guys would immediately elevate Atl big time.
And even though Dejounte ain't that kind of player, a d is still known for his defense as well, it wasn't gonna work from the word GO with a "top 3 ball hog stat" player like Trae.

Kinda off topic but not really, depending on which team gets him, the team that trades for Dejounte Murray is gonna get a "steal," because his usage will see a pretty decent uptick away from the offensive juggernaut that IS little Trae

  11. I Love my team but, terrible choices my entire life. From Marvin Williams over Chris Paul. Luka Doncic trade for Trae Young. Cam Reddish selection over Tyler Herro. I can go on and on.

  12. We messed up by not going the development route brung in too many vets then trade away young talent the roster at one point shouldve been trae huerter/reddish hunter/reddish collins and capela you gotta let the youngs develop i say we trade bogi and start playing aj also trade bey

  13. Extremely valid points but I think the real problem is that Trae needs to be better with moving and scoring off ball and they need another two way star at the wing. The team as a whole is just not that Good. Trae has obvious issues but he has shown in the playoffs he can take over at the end of games which is rare.

  14. Personally, I don't think building a team around one player, no matter how elite, has a solid track record in the league, Lillard and the Trailblazers being the most famous example (arguably). Even superteams aren't sure fire things. I guess chemistry is king—give me 5 mid players that seamlessly gel together versus one with three superstars who each play for themselves (cough Brooklyn cough) and I'll bet good money on them every time.

  15. Draft night they should have known that drafting a very small guard never works out. You can’t be that undersized. No small point guards can get you a title.

  16. Trae has had to evolve his game since the league loosened its policy on defense, players can come in alot closer and not have to worry about those fouls. Harden, Trae and Curry all played to draw fouls but those first two were notorious for it. Harden and Curry have had players they can dish to, Trae hasn't had anyone to evolve his game with/through. I also don't think Trae WANTS to be a facilitator, I think his ego drives him to be the showboat scorer

Add to that his locker room issues and that time his own coach called him out for playing video games rather than supporting his team… in many ways,THAT speaks more of/to Trae's character makeup than his unwillingness to devote some time to his defensive game

  17. Appreciate the outside looking in perspective. Most fans aren’t really wandering what if about Luka. We understand the hype train doesn’t run through here and so if Luka was here tearing jerseys in half, the conversation would be the same. Both players have been to the same peak, I would argue Trae with less help. He didn’t have Porzingus or a Kyrie to play with. The real problem with Atlanta and what set the franchise back is too many hands in the cookie jar. You neglected to mention the hawks had a GM trying to build a team, similar to GSW however the team’s Majority owner has “a loud voice”. The Murray trade was dysfunctional at best as the GM didn’t want to give up the picks, but the owner pushed for it. Travis now seeing he can’t do his job effectively without the owner interfering walked. At the same time Nate also was rumored to wanting to quit but was begged to stay on before being fired 2 months later. It is not an easy task building around Trae Young and his defensive limitations, he has gotten better and ranked top 10 in steals this year but he still 6’1 ish. It becomes more of a challenge when the current roster is built around 3 different ideas, from Travis, to Tony, and now Landry.

  18. Honestly pull him to the warriors for d.g and c.p that will help Paul retire keep the splash bros trae off the bend and can star. But imma wolf fan

  19. Just to clear things up, there has NEVER in history been a player in the Euroleague do what Luka did at his age.
He might have not had the hype, for whatever reason, but he was the MVP & Finals MVP of the 2nd best league in the world at only 18 years old.
He won Eurobasket with a country that has about the same population as the Charlotte metro area.
He made the All-Decade team, despite playing his last season at the age of 18.
What he did was miles ahead of any other Euro prospect ever & the fact that he wasn't considered a LeBron James type prospect just shows how terrible the scouts & media are when it comes to International evaluation.

  20. When your best player (Trae Young) plays the most horrid defense in the league, you are never, ever going to win a title. He is immediately exploited when games matter. Doncic isn't much better defensively, but compared to Trae Young, he's Dennis Rodman.

  21. There's no way that Trae is worth multiple first round picks. The fact Murray and Gobert Landes multiple firsts was just stupidity on the Wolves' and Hawks' parts.
