What Do the Bulls Do With DeMar DeRozan?

What Do the Bulls Do With DeMar DeRozan?

With the NBA trade deadline now less than a week away all eyes and attention from Bulls fans has been what is the front office going to do are they going to make any significant changes trading one of the mid three or perhaps all of them do they make some minor moves that

Don’t really have much of an impact on the current roster or is it possible that for the third straight year at the deadline they twiddle their thumbs and do nothing and while most of the focus the up to the deadline has been centered around Zack LaVine and whether the Bulls

Will be able to find a trade partner for him and otherwise dry trade market I actually wanted to focus on a different player for today’s video and what the Bulls may or may not do with the trade deadline surrounding him and yes that’s dear D rozan because the question I get

Asked often or just seeing people making comments about it on Twitter is well the Bulls can’t let Demar Walk For Nothing in free agency this summer they either need to trade him between now and next week or extend him maybe even a potential sign in trade if need be but

While letting dear simply sign with another team this summer and the Bulls getting nothing in return is not ideal at the the same time it’s also not the worst possible outcome what do I mean by that well let’s talk about it further so what’s going on everyone you’re

Listening to Bull cenal here hope you’re well doing well uh be sure to subscribe if you’re not already and you like the content about 50% of you watching are not subscribed and it would mean a great deal to me to help the channel continue to grow and in return I’ll be putting

Out more Bulls content like this now when the Bulls signed Mar Rosen back in the summer of 2021 to a three-year 82 million deal and to be clear it was actually a sign and trade when the bulls actually sent Thaddius young Alfred cinu a second round pick and a first round

Pick top 10 protected to the Spurs in that sign and trade deal and at that time a lot of people were saying it was a massive overpay there was no way that dear was worth that kind of contract at that stage in his career not everyone

Was saying that but a lot of people felt that dear was going to see a big pay cut in his next contract and whether you like themar or not you can’t deny that he’s been worth that deal the Bulls gave him he’s been an All-Star for two of

Those Seasons he’s arguably been the Bull’s best player during those three seasons the best scorer very efficient on offense yes his game hasn’t able able the Bulls to play a quick uptempo style of basketball with a lot of ball movement that you would like to see but

Demar for a player in his mid-30s in his 15th season in the league has been better than expected for a guy a lot of people thought was going to be going to a contending team for a vetman deal after his contract expired with the

Spurs but be all of that as it may the three-year deal that he signed back in 2021 is almost up dear is currently playing in the final year of his contract at 28.6 million and with him still playing at a high level at age 34 he’s going to be expecting another big

Contract and he’s not wrong to think that he deserves a big payday given his level of production and impact on the court but is that going to be the Bulls who pays him that deal or another team well there’s a few things you have to understand as it relates to the Bulls

Future and where they decide to take this team how much they have to work with when it comes to the salary cap next season what potential trades that would be available to them in moving toar by next week but more importantly how much the Bull’s value to Mar Rosen

And his leadership and professionalism like everything that’s been reported coming out of the Bulls Camp as well as just listening to what Billy Donovan and AK have said over the years is that they love Demar they value what he brings both on and off the court as a mentor

Leader and obviously the savviness and skills that he brings to the court so while I think most will say well they have to trade tomorrow he’s going to be 35 this summer you can’t keep expecting him to play the way he has been and you can’t keep relying on him to close out

Games in the fourth quarter and eventually you’re going to have to start thinking about your future and dear at his age is not going to be a part of that and if you’re saying that you’re not wrong as good as dear has been he’s not moving the needle for the Bulls and

The Bulls absolutely have to start focusing on their younger guys rather than keeping their older vets around and handing them out big contracts but I just don’t think the Bulls see it that way they see value in keeping one of your vets that is a good influence on

The younger guys and can help them navigate the NBA and teach them what is needed to win rather than just putting a bunch of young guys on a roster and hoping they can figure things out together kind of like what we’re seeing from the Detroit Pistons so when people

Ask is dear going to be getting traded I find it very very unlikely that he’s going to be moved by the deadline it’s going to need to be a very convincing enough of an offer for the Bulls to really be swayed because here’s the thing and I know most won’t agree with

Me on this but it would actually be better to not trade dear than just have the Bulls settle and take on some bad contracts and maybe a second rounder just to get something for him in return rather than letting him walk for nothing and then if you go into the offseason

Demar demands a lot of money more than he’s actually worth and more than what the Bulls are able to afford as far as staying under the tax line while they also need to pay Patrick Williams rather than agreeing to an extension for Demar to a large contract at age 35 a

Long-term contract that is going to hamstring your cap situation for the foreseeable future if it’s between those two scenarios trade him for penuts in a bad contract or two or giving him a bad contract in the offseason letting him walk for nothing isn’t the worst thing

In the world if those are your two scenarios that you’re looking at I would rather they let dear walk and free up the c space than to sign him for a large extension going into his late 30s or trade him but at the expense of taking on other bad contracts because here’s

The thing the salary cap for next season is projected to be $141 million we just got those figures recently from the NBA the luxury tax threshold is at 172 million the Bulls as of right now for next season have a little over $130 million committed on their books some of

That could change depending on whether Lonzo picks up his player option which he most certainly will why wouldn’t he team option on dalan Terry’s rookie scale deal and a partial guarantee to Terry Taylor at the same time it also doesn’t include potential contract extensions to Patrick William Andre

Drummond and dear for Drummond he’ll either be cheap or the Bulls will let him walk so that won’t really impact the overall salary cap that much but Patrick Williams say what you will he’s going to command a fair amount because he’s a highle defending Wing that can also

Shoot threes at a decent clip you compare him to his peers and that level of skill set and there is a world where Pat gets something in the range of $18 to20 million a year right there that puts the Bulls at $150 million with only 22 million left before hitting the tax

Line which ownership is not going to allow allow the Bulls to exceed if dear wants $22 million or more it’s not going to work and it also limits the Bull’s ability to sign other free agents even to minimum deals if he’s near that $22 million range now if dear is willing to

Take a team-friendly deal a pay cut to enable the Bulls more flexibility with their cap sheet that’s a different story but then you have to ask yourself why would dear do that why would Demar at the tail end of his career no championships to his name be willing to

Take a pay cut to stay with this Bulls team like let’s be real here the Bulls can barely make the playoffs this isn’t a situation in which a player takes a HomeTown discount players take discounts when they see they have an opportunity to contend for a title and that’s not

The Bulls he’s not going to be willing to take a pay cut for the Bulls dear’s a good guy he’s loyal has always been very professional talks about how he loves playing in Chicago but he’s not stupid and so if dear is looking at another big contract extension knowing this likely

Will be his last big contract of his career and it’s a big enough contract that is negatively going to limit the Bulls on their payroll then it’s a no you let dear and if it means trading him for some other bad salaries unless they’re expiring deals as well but if

It’s bad salaries that are going to be going into next season and Beyond then it’s a no to have him play out the season thank him for his service and he goes elsewhere because the Bulls have to be thinking about their future and if their future means they end up in a

Better cap position by not extending dear then that’s the way to go now a lot of this could change depending on whether the Bulls do in fat get off Zach’s contract trade him for some expiring deals because that moves $40 plus million off your books for the next

Three seasons and it also depends on if the Bulls apply for medical retirement on lonzo’s deal if they deem his injury to be career ending and they get that $21 million off the books for next season that completely changes their cap sheet for next season which could afford

Dear a bigger payday but even then is it worth it is it worth paying dear over $20 million when he’s in his mid-30s I love Demar but I just don’t see how that makes any kind of sense for the Bulls as it relates to their future now I will do

Some kind of salary cap explanation video specifically for the Bulls what they have on their sheet what they have to work with for next season but I’ll do that after the trade deadline because the payroll could look a lot different by then might not look different at all

Because I think most of us are expecting the Bulls to do nothing but you never know so anyway I’ll have a more in-depth video on the Bulls salary cap situation now that we have the cap figures in from the NBA for next year let me know what

You guys think as far as what the Bulls should do with dear going into the trade deadline as well as the offseason if they don’t move him big game tomorrow for the Bulls taking on the Sacramento Kings at the you see I’ll have a post game video out for that be on the

Lookout for it as always be sure to subscribe and I will see you guys in the next one

  1. Demars game can translate into his older years.

Mid range, freethrow, high iq passing. He just would need to heavily focus on a 3 as a vet (he has been shooting more already this year)

  2. We need to move on somebody going to be 35 with present state of our team. Trade him to the Lakers for Hachimura and Vincent. I know the Lakers would love to have him.

  3. We’re in route for to being a mediocre team for the next ten seasons. White is going to save the franchise surely. I told myself in 2019 that I’m done once Lebron and some of the 80’s babies start exiting the league. Curry… Harden… We currently have a lot of em stacked on the clippers.

  4. Isn't demar a bench player for the all star game? And if he is his trade value would shoot up its not a bad idea to trade him for atleast equal value

  5. Why can’t he walk for nothing? It’s an open roster spot so they can actually sign a PF. Demar making over 20 mil makes infinitely more sense than max Lavine

  6. The only reliable player for us when we can’t score in the midrange or get fouls , nobody else like it , it’ll be a big mistake trading demar before zack

  7. Demar's put to much into the teams he's played for to finish a career without a ring, atleast send him somewhere that's an actual contender.

  8. I agree we have a strong FA class next year and the Bulls can retool next year. Let him walk.

  9. Trading Zach Lavine and applying for medical retirement for Lonzo Ball could make me think about giving him around 68M split (25/23/20) with the last season of the contract being partially guaranteed. If he is willing to get that sheet, because let's face it, that's around the best offer that he would get coming from a contender, then I'm happy with it.
