Spurs Victor Wembanyama Speaks On Loss Vs. Thunder, Match Up w Chet Holmgren

These uh match ups against Chad more personal for you than uh I mean I wasn’t matched up against him the whole game but uh you know my first goal is always to win and I don’t I don’t in a game like this I don’t think about that especially in in a

Loss there was a moment in the second quarter there where you checked back into the game was that uh the game plan to match minutes with Chad or was it like oh he’s going in I got to get in there um I mean no I was I mean I was

Told like uh I mean right when I S out before that I go back at 2 minutes so in terms of not matching up directly with Chad you guarded him defensively but they had somebody else on you and then they’ run other Defenders at you wondering what you thought of that

Defense that they threw at you consistently tonight I mean gives me I mean having a smaller guy it’s gives me some easy easy baskets sometimes so but give me I me matching me up with a bigger guy gives me you know allows me to to be faster than them or so

It’s it’s just I just got to adapt but it’s I’ve seen this defense before defense before so it’s just played differently every time would you rather have had it been not oneon-one it’s a team game but he guards you you guard him and for a stretch of the game you

Guys just kind of go at it I mean I haven’t played really one-on ones all year it’s uh always one on two or something so it’s not a really thing you had established a nice Synergy with Trey as the starting point guard where how much of a disadvantage was it to like to

To not have him out there yeah we F we felt we felt it you know the lack of sometimes organization and uh you know his his expertise is precious and it’s I could feel especially in the second half third quarter that we we we needed him but you know it’s it happens

In the season he’s uh hopefully he’ll be back next game so it’s it’s all good pop said your minutes are Capp now at 30 and it’s possible that you could play the back to back this weekend do you feel like things are loosening up and close to getting back to normal yeah

Um yeah yeah I think we’re getting close and it’s uh I mean it’s a good thing the for me the the recovery is always the the most important and uh even though sometimes it’s hard to sleep with the time zones and travels it’s we got to we

Got to do as best as we can and my body is doing reacting pretty well so far you talked about playing one against two a lot how what is your comfort level like sensing those second third Defenders coming and and making the right pass um it’s probably one uh one thing that

Was hard starting start of the season but now it’s now that I get I understand more how the I mean the court works the rotations you know and my teammates as well know uh where I’m comfortable at you know they they do the right Cuts

More and more and uh I’m trying to turn the ball over less and less and do better passes and it’s I mean it’s uh it’s going to be a thing you know I want to be good I want to be great it’s going to be I I don’t think I’ll play one-on once

Ever than we’ll do some friend John Uh For for for Um for [Applause] Thanks

  1. Damn Vic says he hasn't played 1 on 1 all year lmao. Every team has 2-3 people guarding him. They're scared.

  2. Victor Wenbanyama French Q&A translated

    1. Hello Victor, I want to go back to Chet, and the history you share together with that finals you played against each other (U19 world cup).
You said that game meant something to you (Wemby acknowledges it), so I'm wondering how special it was to play against him again tonight?
    1. Regarding that history, It's going to feel more special when we meet with our respective national teams, but of course, everytime I play against any of the players of that US team, I remember it. It has happened a few times already and the thought is always somewhere in the back of my mind.

    2. Can you talk about the minutes restriction? At times, we've seen you get off the bench and stretch while the game was going on. Is it hard to sit still and watch? * shared chuckle *
    2. Maybe a little bit, but I know it's for the best and, that stretching, is mostly to keep warm. It is hard to keep still for 6, 7 minutes straight and instantly be ready to play. I'm trying to keep ready.

    3. In a game as frustrating as this Victor, do you feel like the Spurs are bridging the gap to the top teams?
    3. At times yes but we also have some low points in our games where the gap appears to be stretching. I feel like those lows are getting rarer and rarer these days. Today was a game with a bit more lows but the next one is going to be another story. There are always highs and lows, and I believe that we are heading in the right direction, we are improving.

    4. At the start of the 4th quarter, although the game was pretty obviously over, you played a few minutes and showed a lot of emotions, put in a lot of effort and intensity. (Victor nods)
    4. We could see during the 3rd quarter that we were too slow, we didn't put in enough effort. On the bench, just before the start of the 4th we talked with Devin about the need to bring in more energy and rythm, I wasn't even looking at the scoreboard. * chuckling * At some point I was celebrating, then I looked at the scoreboard and thought "oh damn… right" * chuckling *, But I was just trying to bring in some energy.

    5. Dunking on Chet, scoring against him, doesn't that give you any extra motivation? I'm a bit insistent on this, I know.
    5. …Well, that's not what I'm fighting for on the court. I'm trying to win.

    6. The French NT's staff is here in S.A., they arrived today, did you get a chance to talk to them?
    6. Yeah, this morning at training, I had the opportunity to quickly greet them but we'll spend some more time together for sure.

    7. What is the goal of this meeting?
    7. There isn't one specific thing, the goal is to keep in touch, get an opportunity to talk about the national team and how we want things to proceed through the end of the season. Maybe a little bit of basketball talk with Vincent (ex coach and NT head coach) but it's mostly about keeping in touch which is a good initiative on their part.

  3. As a spurs fan, missing chip engelland, the spurs shooting is awful, props to the thunder , chip is there now and efficiency is there

  4. Its very interesting what he said in french. In english it was just the typical
    NBA press conference BS.

  5. 83-70 was the score when pop decided to sub Collins, Keldon, Osman Etc. The lead blew to 100-76. Embarrassing, the 2nd unit blew it

  6. Bro saying he wasn’t focusing on the matchup and it wasn’t personal yet he kept going at Chet and taunting him while his team was down 30 💀
