Not a fan of Neubeck but what an incredible opening to the article:

> whatever portion of it that’s torn is not really going to work anymore. that tear of the meniscus.
i hate the fact that knees dont heal themselves. surgery or some operation is needed. knees are probbly the worst part of our body i dunno im a salty embiid fan so take it with a grain of salt

brass tacks, it seems like this will either be 6 weeks (surgery), or 4-6 weeks and then another 6 weeks when he comes back and has swelling a few days after he ramps up activity and eventually needs surgery anyway.
but when you remove pieces of the meniscus, it doesnt grow back, and since hes already lost an undetermined percentage of his meniscus in that knee, its not going to be great for him long term. “long term” is of course the true wildcard.

My biggest takeaway from this is that a repair is very likely impossible and meniscectomy or not, the flap is useless. Therefore, he isn’t losing more of his meniscus by cutting out the flap as he’s already lost function of that part of his meniscus. Therefore, it seems like a no brainer to get the scope over with sooner rather than later.

I think I should be able to legally call myself a doctor at this point with all this training

As an athlete who has had 4 meniscus shavings, I can try to clear some stuff up.
If he elects to get the operation (which is ideal) he can be back playing in 6 weeks. That being said, he’s not going to be anywhere near 100% for whatever playing time he’ll be back for. You’re “good to go” but he’s not going to feel like himself for the remainder of the season/post season.
Depending on the location of the tear, he could possibly continue to play on it, but risks making it worse, or his knee randomly giving out during certain movements. I wouldn’t recommend this.
He can still be the level of player he’s been next season.
He’s gonna have trouble later in life, but meniscus surgeries have come quite along way in the past 15 years.
With the recent advancements in medical science, you an actually now regrow meniscus in your knee, but with the recovery time, he’d basically have to stop playing basketball for the remainder of his prime age.
Meniscetomies suck, I’ve had two, biggest thing is limiting scar tissue

We need to be all in. I dont want to see Jojo all crippled up in 5 yrs. Hopefully, we can win one in his current contract, and he can get out with some of his health intact. His health and the rest of his life are too important. He needs to be able to play soccer with Arthur.

“I’m assuming it’s non-repairable, which it most likely isn’t, I’d say there’s a 99% 98 99% chance it’s a non-repairable tear. Some tears, we can repair if it’s a very specific tear around the rim of the meniscus because there is a little bit of a blood supply there. So in a case where a meniscal tear has been shown to be repairable, you’re looking at six months of recovery, right? Six to nine months.”
what does this mean? seems contradictory. is a repair possible or not?

Shit situation for the Sixers to be in, really.
Embiid and his own meniscuses. Iconic.
