Jayson Tatum ‘Surprised’ Marcus Smart Didn’t Cry During Tribute | Postgame Interview

Questions for Jason Jason during the Marcus Smart tribute video obviously you’re standing up you’re watching it you’re kind of egging the crowd on to cheer him uh a little bit louder what was that moment like and just basically what’s it been like to have Marcus Smart back in Boston

Uh I mean it was an incredible moment uh you know what he meant to the team what he meant to the organization what he meant to the city um he was he was loved he was obviously a fan favorite so for him to come back and get the kind of

Reception and love that he did uh it was it was cool to see I was happy for him you know he had his his wife and you know some of his friends and family here to see that um it was much deserved um so that was that was a cool moment to

See him you know get those get his flowers and things like that is there something for you um seeing that like knowing that you’re here you’re kind of like the face of this franchise or one of the faces of the franchise um just seeing how a crowd Embraces players and

Shows the love even even when they’re gone like kind of like just what kind of is there like a pride or something like that that that you get yeah and uh you know margus SM was he was he was the fan favorite uh and everybody everybody knew

That you know the way he played you know he wore his heart on his sleeve and every night he he gave it his all and uh you know we have some very um smart fans right and and they they saw that and they they appreciated that so um it was

Just really cool to see um happy for him I’m surprised he didn’t cry uh cuz you know that was that was special Jason Marcus always held you and Jaylen especially accountable publicly and privately what gave him like The credibility to do that how tough was it

To kind of get used to that and start to embrace set and what are the tools that he helped give you now that you’re the one leading the team yeah uh you know I spent spent 6 years of smart and you know that’s like a brother to me uh you

Know it was it was some tough days and we had a lot of great days right uh you know some tough conversations that we had um it was some great conversations and you just learn you know being around smart long enough you everything um that he did everything that he said came from

A place of love and you know him just wanting to win uh and everybody you know voices their opinions and emotions differently uh you know smart was wasn’t going to bite his tongue for nobody and you know that’s what you um you know learn to appreciate about

Him obviously over the summer a lot of fans um you know I’m sure you guys too were kind of shocked to see him traded just what do you remember about kind of your reaction to that and just you know learning that you were going to have to

Kind of regroup and maybe step up as a leader in his absence this year and how do you think that’s kind of gone for you and Jaylen you know following in his footsteps obviously with what he brought uh it it was tough it was shocking to

See that uh and I I’ve said it that you know the business of the NBA you know losing teammates uh that you know I up until now I spent uh every season you know with and been through so many ups and downs with him um so it’s tough It’s not just

Losing losing a team it’s losing a you know a friend a brother uh so it obviously you know you welcome the new guys with open arms um but you know you just spent so much time um over the course of six years with somebody that you know it was it

Was tough to see him get traded Jason you were here I mean you watched Pierce’s Jersey getting retired Garnett’s you’ve you’ve seen guys come back and can get standing noes and I mean what’s that mean in terms of does it kind of cement the importance of a

Playing here playing in Boston and how much you are revered by fans if you help help them win and help them get to a level it just seems like this is this happens pretty often and in your seven eight years here it’s I mean you’ve seen

It what does that mean do you when do you kind of what do You observe when you observe Mark Marcus coming back and the reaction of pling here uh yeah it just goes to show that you know if you when you put this jersey on and um you respect the game and

Respect uh the organization and respect the people that came before you by you know essentially uh giving it your all every single night you know when Pierce and kg and smart um you know when they all came back for different reasons the the reception and the love that they got

Uh you know when you you do all those things the fans they appreciate it and they uh they know how to show their appreciation last question um smart was very vocal outside of the court but also on the court especially on defense um and you kind of lost that quarterback in

Defense without Smart or do you step up as maybe usly day um anyone who like take the place of smart in the defense when it comes to leadership and being vocal and communication um it’s a collective effort you know we all have to uh play a part in that and

Uh I think just as the years go by um you get more comfortable and your role and your position and you know your voice gets louder and louder uh you know you become more of a leader through experiences um and I think that’s what’s happened for all the dogs thank you

BOSTON — Jayson Tatum, after leading the Celtics to a 131-91 victory over the Grizzlies with 34 points, reflected on the warm reception Marcus Smart received upon his return. “Marcus Smart, he was the fan favorite… we have some very smart fans… it was really cool to see. Happy for him. Surprised he didn’t cry,” Tatum commented, acknowledging the strong bond between Smart and the Boston fans.

  2. 50 games in, I do think the team misses Smart's fire. Everyone is so chill, all the time – which is good, a lot of the time. But there doesnt seem to be anyone to kick it up when they just absolutely have to get in gear, which is something Smart excelled at.
