Behind potent offense, Cavs pick up sixth straight win | Cleveland Cavaliers podcast

Not one not two not three not four not five but six straight wins for the Cleveland Cavaliers let’s talk about their latest dub on a new episode of Locked on Cavs are locked on Cavs your daily Cleveland Cavaliers podcast today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now

New customers get $200 in bonus bets if your best bet of $5 or more wins you just visit fanduel.com lockon to get started I’m Chris Manning that is Evan damal Cavs beat the Kings absolutely put it on Sacramento in a lot of different ways in this one a 136 to

110 Cleveland win Evan your big takeaway from Cavs Kings is what um the Cavs came out locked and loaded and ready to go in this one and I think for me Evan Moy was super super aggressive and I think Max stru I asked him about this postgame because uh during shootaround stru

Noticed like when Moy flaring out to the perimeter so much going three to3 against San Antonio he was like a different switch flipping for Moy and I asked him again like even though wasn’t the most efficient night shooting wise for Mo like flirt with the triple double in

Limited minutes and I said do you notice the different of switch he said yeah like you can tell like he’s healthy he’s feeling himself again and it’s going to be exciting to see where this team goes and I know JB vicker staff said blanket answer like they want all their guys to

Be aggressive but I think for me in my is if the Cavs get this level of production from Evan Moy most nights where he’s just so locked in and engaged and he is the second or third most shots taken from the floor like I think that is a

Recipe and formula for Success that could really take the Cav’s place is just because Moy was playing a lot of high impact minutes um in the time he was on the floor sure sure plus minus doesn’t really tend to lean towards that but I I just the old eye test told me

Like Moy was playing pretty hard especially after a pretty impressive performance against San Antonio a lot of good momentum in his Corner mob in a lot of ways to me and exemplifies what this game was for Cleveland offensively the to me the most fun player of the night offensively was

Evan mby in the second half getting a rebound he immediately goes hard up the floor creates an alleyoop to Donovan Mitchell You could argue the Mitchell self alleyoop was better I I wouldn’t totally disagree with that but Mooby just being aggressive looking for shots

All of this at adds up and then the team as a whole you get Donovan Mitchell in double figures you get Moy in double figures you get streu in double figures you get Allen in double figures Garland auro Levert All in double figures you score as a you shoot nearly 60% from the

Field as a team 56% from three you would tie a season high in three-pointers made you had an offensive rating above 140 in this game absolutely just an offensive showcase for Cleveland I I I mean Evan I think that we had some questions about what this team was going to be once they

Got their offensive guys back once excuse me once they got Moy and Garland back we didn’t know exactly what these guys were going to be what it was going to look like there’s still stuff to figure out Garland isn’t at his best yet Moy you know was really aggressive it

Was just 5- 12 in this game but you’re starting to see that the offensive growth we saw and all the guys really echoed this postgame bicker has echoed this a lot as well it doesn’t feel like the offensive boom progression whatever you want to say that we saw

When moing G on a route is going anywhere this game in the in in them scoring against look not a good defensive team in Sacramento but a team that plays at a certain pace and the Cavs played more at their pit and their Pace I would say the fact that they

Played offensively at this level against a team like this and out Kings the kings in a lot of ways is really impressive and tells us I think a lot about where this group is ultimately at yeah I haven’t seen a Cavalier Force overthrow a king like this since maybe the I don’t

Know historical context French Evolution jokes are jokes but either way um this was yeah like you said the Cavs have been firing in all cylinders and F of the program Jordan Christmas I it’s been sticking with me for a bit at least noted that in terms of trade deadline

Acquisitions he’s viewing the Cavs getting Moy and Garland back healthy and ight as an acquisition for the Cavs and I think that is starting to make a bit more sense for me than more that I watch this team play and maybe Jordan is just more cerebral at this than I am

But you can tell that the Cavs are firing an all cylinders like they don’t miss a beat without Garland and Moy on the floor but they sure do look a lot more formidable and terrifying um when they are on the floor and there’s that 27 minute limit 27 minute restriction

That JB Pier step has them on currently it’ll progressively get become more and more as they get more reps and wind under their belt uh just on the floor but you’re starting to see the glimmers of how it does work and also just like how they can add more intricacies and

Layers and just more lethality to their offense when those two are out there those two is in Garland and Moy but also like you pull those two whether it’s resting them or the minute restriction limit comes up just because like this team is red hot and there’s going to be

A moment where they stumble a little bit I it could come soon it could come later but they are jelling at just the right time and I think it’s always weird to think like they’ve lost they lost two games in January they’re undefeated in February so far granted not very early

Into February but they’re the eighth seed on January 1st now as of recording the show um and the Bucks do play on uh Tuesday when the show drops but the Cav have the second best record in the Eastern Conference and they’re in Striking Distance of the mo or the

Boston Celtics for one at least with five games back so weird to think just how dramatic this turnaround has been and just like how much the Cavs have changed so much internally on the fly but it’s it’s incredible they’re making it work and it’s it’s this is like you

Said they out Kings the kings in terms of just like absolutely blowing the bricks off somebody with speed pace and shooting and scoring we’ll get into some of the the performances and how they really won the game in segment two but I’m going to ask you this EV to wrap up

Segment one here’s the upcoming slate of games I want you to tell me to stop when you think that that’s the next game you would say there’s like a a 5050 or more chance that Cavs could lose that game okay this I was thinking about this uh I

Was texting with uh a mutual friend of ours during this game who was thinking about this as a result of of him saying that at Washington on Wednesday at Brooklyn on Thursday I Gotta Laugh at the notion of them losing to the Wizards proed okay at Brooklyn on Thursday at

Toronto on Saturday home against Philly without juel embiid next Monday home versus Chicago on the 20 on the on the 14th of those games before the All-Star break I I paused when I was about to say stop a Philly where sure there’s no Joel embiid um actually funny I mentioned

Jordan Christmas before he said his biggest grip with Nick nurse is the fact that the Sixers just are so flat without Joel and beat out there but hey Tyrese Maxi is Tyrese Maxi so like he could pop off if he’s feeling like it and make the life really make life really hard for

The Cavs but all of these games are certainly winnable with like at least in my opinion the Philly one being the diciest leading into the allar break what are your thoughts I think it’s Philly pre- allar break you go look post allar break you get Orlando the Thursday

After at home then you get Philly the next night in Philly on the second night of a back toback maybe it’s that one I I that came to mind and then you also have Dallas at home on the 27th that was the other one and then you really get into a

Game that uh is going to be awesome I think and and have a lot of stakes the New York Knicks in Cleveland on March 3rd Bing Bong but yeah if it’s not the Knicks game I could see it being Orlando as well just because sure Sam Merill had a career defining Knight

Against the magic last time these two teams played but Orlando is just such a fascinating team for me because they seem to have the weapons to befuddle most teams with their defensive prowess where they’re so young and inexperienced but we we’ll see it could be that Philly

Game as well on a second game of a back toback like that could be a tough two gameer just there and then if they go through February undefeated and the next game is the Knicks and March at home like those those two teams are going to be on a collision course for something

Because um check out locked on Nicks but New York’s record after getting OG and and noobi and the way they’ve been playing has been stunning to say the least got to tell you two games I can’t wait for Knicks on the third Celtics on the fifth next month that is a two game

Stretch that is like we’re actually getting the Cavs against some really good basketball teams that’s like looking very far ahead and we got to go to break but that to me is like you have a lot of easier games between now and then you might lose a couple

Here and there but the way they’re playing that’s like almost like okay where do we really stand like you’re going to get it feels right now that amid all this you have gotten to this two seed you’re probably going to hold very close to that over the next month

You get to that spot you’re actually going to learn something and it’s telling I think how far we are looking ahead a little bit here all right after this how the Cavs won this game Who what performances we’ll talk about stru Mitchell Levert having some moments all that more after

Maybe we look forward just because like he was pretty incredible like he did flirt with the triple double in 27 minutes of play sure he pushed and forced a little bit but he has got a bit of an edge to him and I’m excited to see where this takes the

Cavs but looking elsewhere on the floor like what else can you say about Donovan Mitchell at this point other than he has been everything the Cavs hoped he would be and then some and he really thriving in this new system that Cav has been utilizing like spacing wise whether it’s

Him shooting threes as he’s a Three-Point Contest participant or you know just the spacing he provides to him attacking the basket like this is a ideal offense that we maybe haven’t seen Donovan Mitchell playing in since probably the peak of his days with the Jazz but just one before we move off Moy

Kind of give me two pass Moy defensively in this game as well I thought was just outstanding you know sabonis got very close to another triple double um that’s just kind of what he does a triple double did have a triple double had 12

19 and 15 he was .5 I believe under his points and rebounds uh combined over underline if any you were interested in that but Moy was contesting shots everywhere he was decisive he had seven assists in this game as well 14 boards just a all around really good game and

Two steals a block just I I thought pretty darn good in a two-way sense not just as a scorer we’ll talk about his shooting a little bit in segment three some more Moi to come in this episode I mean Mitchell I mean Evan he made maybe

The play of the night if it wasn’t for me the Mobly thing it was Donovan Mitchell getting stuck in like the middle of the floor looking kind of lost shot clocks running down and then he’s able to spin away from whoever was defending him throws the ball off the backboard with his left

Hand and finishes and he just had he’s just on this run where he’s I you feel like almost every shot’s going in you feel like he’s just brimming with confidence he had a 29 11 to 20 from the field five of 11 from three five assist zero turnover Knight he is absolutely

Just playing I think incredible basketball right now and he wasn’t even like overwhelming in this game but he was just still very good and then everyone else is kind of adding to and you’re just like oh okay Mitchell’s getting support here and he doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly great but he is

Still the best player on the floor and helping them carry this home yeah and you said he wasn’t overwhelming in this game but like I said as good as advertised had like one of those momentum Height plays like you said with the left-and laot pass he said he had

Done that since high school and he said if he did it with his right hand he would have done something and I quote crazy so alternate timeline there’s Donovan Mitchell throwing a right-handed lot pass Chris has a full head hair and a beard I have a mustache and I’m bald etc etc

But yeah he was awesome in this game but I think to your point like he wasn’t the lone actor in this one like it was a collective effort like it has been for the better part of almost two months for Cleveland like if you look at from just

Like a pure statistical standpoint they had 36 assists on 51 makes like that’s really good trying to play conducive team basketball and they’ve continued to do that just on a nightly basis and Mitchell has joked a few times like getting Garland and moley back just makes his life easier because he doesn’t

Have to play as much and we’ll talk about this more in the final segment but JB picker staff’s hand is kind of forced and he admitted like I plan on going 10 players deep we don’t know if that’ll stick in the postseason but at least for the remainder of the regular season like

That’s the plan and the strength and numbers the Cavs have right now with everyone kind of feeling themselves and being confident is really really just beneficial for them but you to shift Lanes from Mitchell real quick you talked about defense I think the Jared Allen’s individual defense at times and sabonis was really

Impressive like yeah sabonis had a triple double in this game it was he almost had it by halftime I believe or maybe even like the by the end of the first quarter he was flipp flirting with like double digited assists or something like that but still like like Allen

Played really good individual defense and he continually just steps up for Cleveland and takes on the defensive assignment of Defending some very high quality big men whatever whether it’s Nicole yic or bam anabo or Joel embiid when embiid was healthy um he just continues just defend Kristoff porzingis

Too like he and be or sorry excuse me Allen defends really well um against just like really Star level bigs and if it wasn’t Moy I think Allen did a very good job at he frustrating sabonis at times I mean sure he was six and9 from the had a freaking triple double with

Almost 20 rebounds and 15 assists but still like was like the head wasn’t the head of the snake in this one but Allan made sure like he wasn’t able to make even a bigger impact on it and that that really stood out to yeah Allan continues just to play at

A insanely high level for the most part and just a very balanc game from him here 19 points he he has seven boards cuz Mooby kind of handled some of the rebounding responsibility in this game but a really efficient Jared Allen I got to the line four times as well and looks

Looks just continually more comfortable when he gets the ball in the middle of the floor the two other guys I think we should hit on quickly Max dreu I think just a really great allaround game for him 22 points five boards two assists had two seals as well six of 10 from

Three had one of the other plays of the night when he pick pocked uh picked deuson his pocket and the back court got a corner three out of it and and he is such a floor Razer for this team when he just does everything competently and

When he has one of his good shooting nights it raises the just raises the the the ceiling on this offense in such a real way and then you have Carris L who had a little run and he was a 17- seven game for him just the one

Turnover but was really key I thought when the Kings made their one kind of final push when it got to around 10 points it wasn’t Mitchell who put his foot down it wasn’t Garland it wasn’t Allen it wasn’t anybody else it was Caris lver who was the team’s leading

Scorer in the fourth quarter with nine points just was really the shot maker the shot taker in that sponti they went three guards Mitchell Garland Levert and Levert was the one who ultimately was was making the big shots to really quell any hopes of a king’s Rebellion yeah

Stru and Levert were awesome in this one and I think leer being fully entrenched as Cleveland six man like he is really comfortable in this role I think JB empowering him at times to be the primary ball handler and playmaker has paid off pretty well for the Cavs lately

Like you had mentioned the uh six sorry excuse me seven assists six rebounds um in one turnover like really consistent production from Lever Off the Bench lately and um just one cl one quick last minute shout out for me um Isaac aoro had another very good game

For me just obviously you not like Stellar Stellar stuff like offensively from him but really benefited from his limited shot opportunities he was two2 from the perimeter he was ripping from the perimeter comfortably and confidently and he was taking advantage of his speed and athleticism to either

Get to the line where he was two of four or he just just finished three of four from the floor overall so all in all like just really solid bench production from the first three guys off the bench or I’d say two guys and then it’s a

Tossup between Dean Wade and Sam Merill for like that third SL fourth guys off the bench but like no the the Cavs got solid production both from the reserves and their starters in this game and if you’re JB picker staff you cannot be any happier no C played bad in this game

Which is kind of a wild thing to to say and consider here all right after this break trying to think like there’s nothing really to nitpick like this was maybe the defense just the fact that like you’re playing Sacramento so like the scoreboard is going to rack up

Really quick but other than that like individually nothing was bad but even the points wise this one it well I guess this is well on this we’ll do this quickly gar excuse me the Cavs in this game had an offensive rating of of one .2 yes the king scored 109 points which

Seems like a lot but in terms of efficiency they were 112. 4 that’s below League average that is not anything particularly potent yes the Cavs it felt like something of a shootout it felt like a game more at the king’s Pace but Sacramento’s offense up to their

Standard up to what they’re capable of was not really at that up rushon for whatever that is worth and as that speaks to the cast performance on the year sac has an offense that is pretty darn good it’s 14th in the league it this was well a

Little bit below what they normally are on the air so good on Cleveland in that sense all right one more break comeback Evan Mobley floor spacer I choked on my own spit thinking about if that’s actually we’ll talk about that after this today’s episode is sponsored by

And his three-point shooting we didn’t talk about this game it was a pretty standard Cavs win in a lot of ways but Moy hit three threes a career high against the SPs over the weekend he was the best player on the floor in that game moob did not hit a three in this

Game he in fact uh did not take a three in this game so any hopes that that was suddenly like a quote unquote you know the switch flipped is not the case EXC me took one three-pointer and missed it I apologize One three-pointer did not make it but not uh suddenly hitting

Stroken threes all over the place here’s what bickers have said quote we were a top 10 offense last year we played in small spaces because our guys are talented are bigest can sh the ball and we know how to play Big to Big I think there’s times you’re going to take

Advantage of both including this referencing their size and mo shooting if teams decide they want to put two bigger guys out there then we can space the if teams decide they want to put a small on one of our bigs now we can just play the paint play Big play Big to big

And see if we can take advantage of that because we’ll take layups and dunks also Evan what do you make of a moobi having that three-point night against the Spurs and what do you make of him potentially being something of a of a spacer as the

Cavs continue to to evolve with him back so I’ll answer the last question first it certainly answers at least the fit between Mo and Allen or the remainder of Allen’s contract and possibly an extension and then just the partnership for the foreseeable future um just because traditionally speaking like

Jared Allen joked post game that um along with Donan Mitchell and Darius Garland razing him quite a bit about taking three-pointers um you can just tell like at least on paper the before Moy had this three of three night um Evan Mo’s not a three-point shooting

Big he was like my gosh 13.2% on like 1.2% 1.2 attempt per game for his career whereas Jared Allen is just not at this point and if Allen adds this to his repertoire I’d be stunned at this point but um just focusing on the moyy lens of this it certainly makes the partnership

A lot easier I think it gives the Cavs a lot more lethality and versatility and they can play five out lineups they could play um non- shooting players like Isaac auro who I mentioned last segment one two of two but like isn’t like the most accurate three-point shooting

Marksman out there and in this game against um Sacramento he attempted he is in Mobile attempted one three-pointer and it was felt like it was fluid within the offense he felt like it was something that was kind of conducive to what the Cavs are trying to do and to be frank

Like this is something the Cavs have been working on with Moy since they drafted him like once they got him in house especially once they brought Luke Walton to the fold like Walton works pretty exclusively with Moy in terms of just adding shooting to his game and

Working on his handle tighten that up a little bit to just kind of like doing those things that Luke Walton did during his Peak at the Lakers but obviously on a much more exaggerated level of course but I think if he adds this his repertoire and adds it

To just like something that is consistently part of his offense especially if he’s getting those looks out there like it’s just going to take the Cavs to a completely different level and it at least lets you continue to live by the stance that the Cavs only go

As far as Evan Moy can cut hit ceiling wise and I don’t know what his ceiling is I don’t think anyone does but this is the next phase in his offensive game for me he like we talked about team shot team handle heading into the season we’re still seeing a little bit of

Column a column B for both but we’re starting to see a manifestation of those two columns like maybe hitting their next Peg as they work their way up to continue growing yeah he in addition to we should say in addition to the Cavs he work you

Know he like all other NBA players has a skills trainy who works with his guy in particular his enen simps who is at the guard whisper on on Instagram and stuff he’s affiliated with waserman I I believe so there’s there’s some connection there obviously with Mo’s

Agency Moy if if Moy is going to shoot and even just take them it’s a massive massive deal I mean the way he took the threes against the Spurs to me was the most important part yes he made them but the way he took them wasn’t just laid in

The shot clock had to get a shot off panicking it was in Rhythm it was purposeful it was to the point and that is to me very telling if he’s going to do that and teams at least have to think about it a little bit this year and it and

It’s a sign of things to come that’s a huge deal and it’s it kind of put some life back into what has felt like an off moob season a lot of ways the other part of this I think is important is the big to big part of it because one of the

Best parts of Moy and Allen before all this before the injuries before everything was the big to big stuff they were finding each other really well on interior passing you getting easy looks two or three four looks a game on those big to Big passes if you can have a

Little bit of both and keep some of that and the ball keeps popping the way it is and all of this works that is can absolutely be part of the Cavs offensive Evolution this is this is just going to be to I don’t know exactly where I would put it I’m

I’m like an official list but if I were to say what am I most now curious about over the next pre- Aller break games let’s say about like what happens M shooting top three I think it’s probably winning streak and how Garland looks and then and then Mo it’s it’s Mo shoot and

If he’s actually going to keep taking and and making threes for me yeah like that three- game lens that that’s the right ranking in order like that’s how I’d have it in my mind too but long term as well it does answer some of the questions that have

Popped up especially in the wake of the injury maybe just like how up and down the Cavs were to start the season about where Moy was at development wise as he is he going to take that quote unquote proverbial year three lead that a lot of us myself included were

Expecting or was he kind of stalling out but I’m not expecting him to become like a three of three shooter or a guy who just like becomes reliant on his three-point shot for his offensive game like in this game against the Kings you saw a lot of looks on the interior that

He was getting I think more than anything for me you just want Evan Moy to be more aggressive on offense like that that that’s ideally what you want from him if you’re the Cavs because he has the makings of your franchise’s best player um I’m sure Donovan Mitchell and

Darius Garland and others are help more than happy to help carry the mantle but I feel like that’s just kind of always been the expectation with Evan Moy after we especially got a feel from him during his rookie season of like okay this this rook’s a little different here compared

To others but now that his offense is catching up to his defensive prowess like I I am curious to see like do we see a more aggressive of Moy like we saw it against the Spurs and it was on the perimeter and you saw it against Sacramento where he was passing

Rebounding blocking shots stealing the ball and also scoring and JB Baker staff told postgame like Moi probably would have been more efficient like there’s a few bunnies he probably wish he would have made and it’s just exciting for me to see like how does this aggressive mindset for Moy continue is it through

Shooting is it through just scoring in general kind of being more of an offensive threat and presence versus maybe the guy who is kind of comfortable being understated on offense at times and just rather let the defense and speak for itself and just make those winning plays that do lead to the Cavs

Just notching up another Victory on their belt like I cu to see like how how how much more does EV have in his tank mindful of the minute restriction and just him getting back into proper in game shape we’re going to end there I’m Chris Manning that is Evan damal thanks

Again to Jake Stevens as always we’ll be getting to more after Cavs Wizards how many wins again one two three six six six wins six wins for the Cleveland Cavaliers there’s really interesting stuff we’ll talk about them after Cavs Wizards and then on Thursday we’ll have a trade deadline recap episode and we’ll

Do a Cavs net recap as well to finish out the week we’ll talk to you then thanks again for tuning in enjoy the rest of your

  1. This Cavs team may be the best team in the league. It seems like everyone has progressed. Literally everyone. And the way Mobley is playing is DIFFERENT. He only scored like 12 but his play style has evolved. He’s bringthing the ball down in transition without a second thought. Making the perfect pass. When he drives he’s doing this scoop layup, looking pretty damn skilled. There’s shooters everywhere surrounding Don!!! The bigs together look like MEN now. Cavs are progressing as the Bucks and Sixers are fading.
