2024 NBA Trade Deadline WINNER AND LOSERS | CBS Sports

NBA trade deadline has come and gone here are the trades there’s of course a lot more than this but this is some of the main trades that we’ve been looking at bo bonovich uh the Knicks were very active today and they they’ve gotten good grades from our two uh professors

On the set here PJ Washington Mavericks making some moves buddy hee added to the Sixers Pat Bev we’ve talked about him going to the Bucks and Coach says hey Pat Uh P Dame aside now chat before things get going there and Gordon Hayward uh going to Oklahoma City

Welcome back inside our HQ Studios Jeremy St Louis jacn austino Bill Ryder the coach Avery Johnson here we’re going to talk winners and losers one of our favorite segments here so coach uh let’s start with winner who do you think won on the trade deadline well I won a

Championship in the garden in 1999 the Spurs first championship so I’m going to be nice to the Knicks the Knicks are winners the Nicks are huge winners today uh and it’s not I agree with Bill it’s not just the trades that they made today but it’s the pre- trade deadline move so

I think in total summation of what they’ve done add it shooting experience uh they traded guys that could be question marks uh in deep into the playoffs they’ve BR brought in some reinforcements especially because Julius Randle and Jaylen Brunson they’re going to draw a lot of attention when you’re

Zeroing in on the team and the playoffs and you got some players that’s going to receive the ball on the back side side in those situations that are going to be able to make plays so the Knicks are winners yeah I’m with you and credit to to my colleague on the podcast I’m

Working on Ashley Nicole Moss who’s been calling this and John Gonzalez and I were sort of doubtful I just couldn’t get my mind around the idea of the Knicks being the savviest front office in the NBA they saw Brunson for what he was they’ve added three-point shooting

The anobi trade as you noted has been a huge addition the Knicks are winners today with the moves they made and the shooting they brought in they’re winners over the course of the last few months and they’re really winners since Leon Rose moved out of being an agent at CA

To being the guy that runs basketball operations for the Knicks and so it’s a reminder that Miracles are possible possible Happ the Knicks I’ve seen the movie Dodgeball I mean whatever the whatever the line is uh the Knicks of the winners today and that is a pattern that has emerged for this organization

Credit to them all right so you guys are in agreement that the Knicks are winners but let’s talk about the losers um bill I’ll start with you who is The Biggest Loser from the train deadline in your opinion I like this organization because I’m from Northeast Iowa and Milwaukee’s

Nearby and I got family there and I like the front office not really a dck this guy but you can’t like I the Bucks and look they’re they’re trying to make up for what was a deficit in defense especially in the back court and perimeter defending and they go and they

Get Pat Bev but as you noted Pat Bev and and Damen Lillard are not best friends maybe that’s something that gets resolved they’re professionals but I think emphasis on the word maybe it’s something that gets resolved they send away campaign they did not make it work

With pain we saw it his previous stop in Phoenix that there was something there and they give up I think the report is a second round pick as part of that deal so it’s too little too late for me there’s a chemistry concern we don’t know if that’ll be solved they give away

As another pick they don’t have a lot to give away do not love this day this deadline for the Milwaukee Bucks yeah my loser the Atlanta Hawks especially when you’re not when you didn’t trade de jante Murray I’ve heard that he was salivating to move from this team to get

Back to his original position which is point guard and not two or the three spot uh just hasn’t really worked out in terms of pairing him up with Trey young who’s a ball dominant guard who’s not as competitive on the defensive end this is uh not really what uh Deon Murray signed

Up for it would have been nice to see him reunited in San Antonio uh to be paired up with a Victor way nyama but this team is intent they very well could slip out of the playoffs they only a game ahead of the Brooklyn Nets and even

If they make it to the play in I’m not sure if this team can win a game come play in time so uh the Atlanta Hawk they’re my losers all right so your losers are the Hawks your losers are the Bucks uh 10th right now in the East the

Bucs are third in the East I’m thinking you heard it from Bill first let’s send it over to Aston Nicole moss and John Gonzalez to see who their winners and losers are take it away guys thanks jacan listen winners losers no in betweeners I’m Ashley John Gonzalez John

I’m G to see you in a little bit I can’t escape you’re like you’re like the 76ers and the pain for you yeah I’m I’m uh I’m always around we’re going to do another show with bill after this but I I think you and I are

In a court on these winners and losers we actually are so let’s dive into it the winners I mean I hate to say I told you so but I love to say I told you so I told you so the New York Knicks I’m going to let you go ahead and go first

And if you want to go and just put a little bit in there you were right Ashley I’ll take that too you were right Ashley I mean look you already heard Bill and Avery talk about the New York Knicks everybody is on the New York Knicks after today’s trade deadline

Excuse me but one did the Knicks one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NBA not just for years but for decades become one of the most competent franchises in the NBA you saw what happened after they traded for ogn and Omi took off like a rocket ship and then

Today they go and get two very capable Shooters who can uh play off the ball they can they can play off the dribble m going to be excellent rotation players for the Knicks this team has had some injury issues as as you know uh ogad and

Obi has been out for a while they’re going to be without Julius Randle for a little bit while uh Jaylen Brunson rolled his ankle the other night Josh Hart’s got a KN thing but when they’re healthy Ashley all of a sudden with Buon bogdanovich and Alec Burks in the

Rotation they’re going to be really deep I’m very interested to see what tibs does with a 910 man rotation when especially in the playoffs he barely would want to go past six guys but yeah it’s the niick as the wi for sure you love throwing in a little tibs jab every

Now and then but look much to your point you know the Knicks needed this dep they needed some help as you said Julius ran OG an anobi no idea when they’re going to be returning and down the stretch you don’t want to exhaust your players we’ve seen what exhaustion looks like on

Julius ran and Jaylen Brunson this is going to help a lot but I think that’s something that we really have to focus on here is how well the Knicks have done on the margins everybody wants to talk about Donovan Mitchell and this big fish can the Knicks win without a quote

Unquote Superstar but they essentially did a two for one swap here because Evan fornier has not seen minutes all he has seen is the bench Quinton Grimes was the only player who was actually seeing minutes under tibs you got two players that you can actually play for the price

Of one essentially I mean this is a good deal yeah it’s an excellent deal and and as you mentioned they’re doing it on the margins they they acquire Burks and bogdanovich without having to move a first round pick I I was on HQ last night they were asking me who I thought

The most influential player traded would be I thought that it was going to be Bruce Brown he stays put in Toronto he would have been an excellent fit for the Knicks for the same reason that ogan andovia has been an excellent fit but you’d have to give up a first round pick

To get Bruce Brown they didn’t they go a different way they do they do the upgrades on the margins and now all of a sudden they’re an extremely deep team we haven’t even talked about hey they they’re hoping to get Mitchell Robinson back for the playoffs as well so

Reinforcements the Cavalry is coming the Knicks are ascendant it’s crazy all of a sudden the Knicks are a very well-run organization before we move on to the losers one last question I keep mentioning the big fish everybody wants to know who that is going to be for the

New York Knicks obviously the name that has been circulating for months I feel like for a season and a half at this point is Donovan Mitchell looking at this team as currently constructed especially with the moves just made a few hours ago is Donovan Mitchell even something or someone rather

That you actually need or can the Knicks take a little bit more time to figure out that perfect piece do they need him I don’t think so I think in the Eastern Conference it’s the Boston Celtics and then everybody else and the Knicks are right there at the top of that group of

Everybody else but you said who’s the big fish if you could get Donovan Mitchell of course you’d take him but who’s the big fish they already have him as his name is Jaylen Brunson when he left the Mavericks some people thought that the Knicks had overpaid for him now

It looks like an absolute bargain the guy’s a super star he made his first All-Star game this season he’s been carrying them on his back all year long when OG anobi and Julius Randle were with the team he was still their best player when they went out I thought okay

That’s it Wheels have come off for the Knicks there’s no way that they’re going to be able to keep their head above water not only did they do that they’ve been thriving they had a nine game win streak before the Lakers ended it and that’s because in that nine game win

Streak seven of those games Jaylen Brunson went for 30 points or more he’s the big fish well listen I’ll take this opportunity to publicly apologize to to Jaylen Brunson because I was one of those people but you live and you learn um moving on to losers you can’t spell

Losers without an l and you also can’t spell the Lakers without an L they made absolutely no moves now if you’re on Twitter which most of us are or X as we now call it LeBron tweeted out some subliminals and some emojis but it looks like LeBron’s going back to a locker

Room of the same faces I mean John we spoke about this LeBron is not going to be a happy camper not going to be a happy camper I actually I have LeBron as the loser here because from a Lakers perspective from a purely academic standpoint I think it

Makes sense Ashley that they didn’t do it they had one first round pick that they could trade right now maybe it would have been enough if you had put in Austin Reeves to get de Jon Murray evidently they weren’t willing to do that and the Hawks decided to stand Pat

And not move de Jon anyway I don’t think even if they had gotten to jante Murray that that really moves the needle for the Lakers they’re 27 and 2 they’ve been in that ninth spot in the playin for much of the Season even if you add DE Jon I don’t think that that

Supercharges the Lakers what I do think from their perspective is that waiting until the off season when they’ll have three first round picks is the better move because then you could upgrade for somebody like we just mentioned Donovan Mitchell our very own Insider Bill Ryder our colleague says that the Lakers

Believe that they can get Donovan Mitchell in the offseason now that could move the needle for them so from the Lakers perspective I get it from LeBron’s perspective of course he’s not going to be happy he’s 39 years old he’s not getting any younger none of us are

He’ll be 40 next December he’s probably really ticked off right now because he knows what we know Ashley this Lakers team is going nowhere fast as currently constituted it’s not going to be a heat situation where they get in through the play in and then make a Deep Run the

West is too good so Lakers side I get it LeBron’s side not going to be happy well I mean speaking of the West the Lakers currently ninth in the west that puts them in the play and they’re 10 and 17 on the road for and one in their past

Five home games so they’re hitting a little bit of a stretch but you wonder if that playoff picture is going to continue for the better for them or continue for the worse for them considering how the West tends to shape up I see your Oklahoma City Thunder

Sitting pretty at number one for people who don’t know you traded your fandom from the 76s you’re taking your talents to OKC looking at the rest of the season after the All-Star break down the stretch concerns about whether or not this Laker team has just enough to even

Make some noise in the postseason in any capacity we saw what they did last year some may say it was a fluke but it happened this is a Lakers team that tends to flip the switch when they need to LeBron is still LeBron James but do you think that history will repeat

Itself this time around I do not uh I think we saw those two teams in front of them make really really good moves today I mean the Kings added some pieces and then uh certainly the Mavs the Mavs go and add two front cor pieces in PJ Washington and Daniel

Gafford I think that that’s interesting for them for the Lakers who’s their third best player Ashley is it still Austin Reeves I mean D’Angelo Russell they benched him then they brought him back into the starting lineup and he was playing really hot and I think that probably contributed to them not making

A move today but they wanted it to be Austin Reeves and Austin Reeves has been fine this year but you’re not going to do anything in the Western Conference in an extremely deep Western Conference when you go oh I guess a fine Austin Reeves is our third best player so no I

Think they they’re going to be in that play most likely because the West is too deep and then if they can get through the play into the playoffs proper it’s going to be tough sledding for them I gotta say John I’m thoroughly looking forward to LeBron’s postgame interview

Tonight it’s going to be a good one Speaking of a good one there’s a lot of great NBA games on the Slate including the Nuggets taking on the Lakers on Kobe day where the Lakers will unveil the statue of the late great Kobe B Bryant outside of the crypto Arena it’s going

  1. Mavs the real winner after the trade deadline. PJ and Gafford help them tremendously with their frontcourt size issue.

  2. Brunson was overpaid and got to New York through his connections at the time. No one should deny this but it is also true he is THE LEADER New York was searching for since ever. Brunson is a superstar now imo and he deserved to be on the starting pineup for all star than Lillard. New York can count on him especially in playoffs unlike Randle.

  3. Yes because Dame and Patrick need to talk. Patrick will do what he needs to on a new team. Both of them are pro's.

  4. Ashley Nicole Moss! One of the best in the game. šŸ”„ you here now? What time you on? Def gonna watch now. šŸ˜

  5. I've been a Knick fan since the late 60's and saw their Championship teams and have been waiting all these years for another title. Maybe by some miracle they can win again.

  6. Shalen Bronson is not a sober star. He is a wall dominant shot in the nix, would never win, would be their primary score. That's just facts, able dance, and stance will fade away. You point cart. Stop your best all the right, and that's what you need to stop and 1818. About 2 other players get the ball and you won't be paying for your. Front court just to be f**** rebounders. In one-dimensional players, you need your best talent closest to the basket. Or be able to go in there and eat a Yale on the defense. She's not that guy.

  7. Knicks made really good moves. Alec Burks can play in that building. Can't wait to see them all together. Rooting for them.

  8. I can see the face LeBron is giving that front office. Nothing for the Lakers. I hope Evan can get time with the pistons. He took his benching like a pro . I wish him the best of luck.

  9. LMFAO dude actually thinks Bumson is better than Spida. Dude cooks that bum. The fact he just ignores the Cavs are on ANOTHER win streak (8 currently) and are at the SECOND SEED. Meanwhile Knicks have no real shot at catching them now with less wins and MORE losses. Dudes an idiot thinking the Celtics are just a lock playing bum teams lately. Just wait for the play offs.

  10. Lakers won on this trade deadline.. because the next move in the offseason is to rid themselves of Lecancer!!!
