Luka Doncic Opens Up about Playing with Kyrie Irving

Luka Doncic Opens Up about Playing with Kyrie Irving

Do you feel like your your uh leadership is different now than it was two or three years ago like are you more vocal yeah for sure way better than two three years ago why why is that is that just your own maturity is that Jay kid

Getting on you is that yeah I think it’s a little bit of everything you know maturity uh then more experience uh you know and JK helps me a lot so I think it’s a little bit of everything last night against Brooklyn speaking of blitzes last night against Brooklyn uh you threw the ball

To Josh Green against the Blitz and he threw it an unexpected pass I would call it to KY bad pass it was a bad pass it was a bad pass I saw it was like I was like oh that’s a that’s a fine pass but

Then you see it at the other angle it was a bad pass but then K you know that got k your reaction did you what did you think when when that happened I almost didn’t believe in I was actually insane for Kyrie to do that I didn’t realize he caught it like the

Wrong way and then had to pull it back towards the rim that was insane it was sick I can do that how’s it how’s it how’s it been with Kyrie you guys obviously in and out last year to finish the season great man he’s a really great guy um you know obviously basketball

Player uh the way he is but it’s just been amazing you know he helps me he helps everybody in the team and everybody loves him on the team so he’s just a great guy you said last night it’s easier to play a lot of minutes when Kyrie’s playing with me and the

Data I just got to drop these real quick here we go when Kyrie plays with you on the on the court uh per 100 possessions fewer Touches for you fewer dribbles for you fewer uh time of possession for you when he’s not on the court you bring up

The ball 56% of the time when he’s on the court you bring up the ball 44% of the time do you do I know you do but the burden that you feel night tonight of having to score having to playmake essentially everything runs through you rebound rebound last night no I okay

Just making sure I know I know you’re a good rebounder what are you averaging eight eight this year nine I think seven seven okay but the just having Kyrie there as is not not he’s not a sa safety blanket obviously but having Kyrie there to help facilitate some of that offense um you

You haven’t really had that because jayen was not Jaylen when Jaylen to a degree at times was but he wasn’t the jayen that we see in New York right now um how much easier is it for you with him oh it’s way easier like I told you

You know I like guess they play 43 minutes and I it was back to back and I fell fine you know me on the back to backs is it’s tough especially with a mask on yeah no it wasn’t to my face uh but it’s way easier man just know uh

Like Brooklyn blitzed me yesterday and the next guy was Kyrie so sometimes he was even open so that’s that’s like easiest way to play it’s so much easier going back to just like that that burden of of having to score having to playmake now you have Kyrie

Um do you have like an optimal way that you want to play because I think I think to some degree there’s like I don’t want to call it criticism but it’s it’s there’s a way that you have to build around you right yeah I think the comparison has been at times James

Harden right how how they built around him with Houston do you do you have an optimal way that you want to play in terms of your usage the Personnel around you I mean obviously I mean everybody does but just you know I just play I mean I just want to win and like

I said we carry in here you know last season was kind of tough because he just came in we couldn’t have practice or nothing together uh it was a long season uh but this is you know honestly we just got to get healthy we’ve been having injuries a lot me Kyrie Derek Lively

Maxi so we just we just got to get healthy honestly and then see what our potential really is do you feel good about your potential I mean you you were on a Western Conference playoff team two years ago obviously the West right now different it’s a different animal it’s a

Different animal but where are you sort of with your team and and sort of your your postseason hopes yeah I think we’ll be fine like I said we just need to get healthy uh and we need to see our potential we still don’t know I think me

Diive and Curry play with 15 games together I think out of 40 or I don’t know how many we played but just need to get healthy man

  1. He still seems really sensitive to any criticism or questions… or is he just joking and very deadpan? Hard to tell… but given his CONSTANT whining on the court, I think it's being sensitive.

  2. BUYER BEWARE !
Kyrie Irving is as fragile as an
    expensive piece of pottery.
He like Embiid, stay off court almost as much as they stay on the court.
Both are walking injuries, keep a stretcher nearby. No joke !

  3. Love you JJ, but these questions are ridiculous — we really asking him if its easier to share the load when you're playing with Kyrie? I know the team better than this.

  4. Would be amazing to see all the superstars of this generation get at least 1 championship. 🙏

  5. By the way, Kyrie as talented as he is, he is basically an ISO
    player.
Moreover, Doncic is the Jokic of guards offensively. He scores, rebounds and is a great facilitator.

  6. Being a Duke alum from Dallas graduating same year as JJ… 2 of my 3 favorite basketball players of all time right here. The 3rd (but 1st) is Dirk, obviously. This is an awesome podcast.

  7. Still haven't heard one "player" say Ky was a bad teammate. Don't let the media and sensation-seeking media figures control your opinions.

  8. Luka mention a 19 yr old rookie in the same conversation as him and Kyrie as far as potential and how many games they’ve played together shows how much importance Luka puts on the center position. You could tell how happy he was tonight to have Gafford, a legit center, in there banging on the boards and catching lobs.
