Anthony Edwards Just Put On A Playmaking CLINIC…

Welcome to another hows and grows breakdown today we’re talking about what might have been Anthony edwards’s best playmaking game for the season and maybe for his career in the blowout win over the Bucks we really could have went in a number of directions for this game and it was especially fun to watch

Minnesota’s number one ranked defense just clamped down on yanis and his bucks but surprisingly I probably don’t show enough love to Anthony Edwards on this channel so I want to dig into what was really an encouraging playmaking display we’ve probably all been a little bit critical of Edwards and his vision and

Execution as a passer so far this season and I think that’s what made this game really pop he finished with nine assists and zero turnovers which is encouraging in and of itself but it was the process that got him there that should excite us fans because an is still very much

Growing into his playma chops it’s not the Super advanced stuff that deserves the praise sometimes it’s just a simple and correct read so we’ve talked about this Zoom action that the Minnesota Timberwolves run out of timeouts and here’s ant creating out of it he comes off this pin down here from McDaniels

And then comes around to collect the ball on this dribble hand off from doar once he reverses back around that scen to shed his man he draws in Janis as a Helper and then uses that Advantage he created to find McDaniels open in the corner that shot doesn’t drop but it’s

Good process there when at different times this season we’ve seen him drive into traffic or Force up a tough mid-range look we know he can make those shots and Edwards is obviously one of the League’s best finishers and creators when getting all the way to the rim but

These kinds of basic reads really make it harder for the defense to Lo load up on him and anticipate him looking for his own shot so it’s empty corner pick and roll here and he’s using his change of pace to read and manipulate the defense when go rolls alongside him

Jannis has to dig down here to provide some help at The Rim so Edwards takes his time and really waits for the defense to overcommit before firing that pass to the corner it’s another assist gone begging but you trust McDaniels in those Corners so that’s a really great

Look for Minnesota’s offense again it’s that same empty Corner look here and this time Janis isn’t sliding all the way over here to stop it so that same skip pass to the corner isn’t on as he grows you probably want to see Edwards make this pass a little earlier but I

Like the way he worms back into the paint and waits for Crowder to commit to the wrong shooter before he Loops that pass back at to cat who’s still wide open at the top of the key I do just think sometimes the right play for Edwards is to kind of avoid his natural

Tendencies to shoot and punish the defense for crowding him out instead there’s nothing special about this but it’s so important to keep a defense guessing he comes off that ball screen here but instead of attacking a great defender like Lopez he slows up walls off Malik Beasley here gets Lopez to

Bite on the pump fake and takes him out of The Possession and then he just flips it back to and for a really easy Flo to look again rather than barreling his way into a shot with Beasley on his hip and yanis and Lopez waiting for him at The

Rim an just flows into Twan game with go now he’s got to step on beasy he uses go as kind of a blockade he squirts into this open space and then brings Lopez along with him and away from the rim then he can squeeze that pass back to go

Who’s now at The Rim without Lopez there waiting for him that’s really Advanced manipulation and execution from Edwards and really the more he can grow that bond with go the better Minnesota’s offense is likely to be because at the end of the day Edwards is going to have

The ball a ton and go is going to set a ton of screens for him the more the defense has to consider and plan for both options on that pick and roll the more dangerous both players become here it is again empty Corner action great screen here from go Edwards attacks

Janis in the drop coverage here so that Gober can slip in behind him towns is over occupying the low man enough with his Corner shooting and a slick little pocket pass feeds goar and he catches a body on The Late rotating Bobby poris just imagine how much scarier the Wolves

Would be as an offense and as a legitimate playoff threat if they could really ramp up the volume and efficiency of this kind of pick and roll but even if it’s not with goar edwards’s biggest strength is his ability to collapse a defense around him when he’s got his

Vision right that makes life so much easier for his teammates look how many bodies he draws here you’ve got the two on the ball chasing him you’ve got cat’s man abandoning cat to rotate over and get in front and you’ve got the big man rotating over to protect the rim

So because ant can glide through all of that this corner read opens up and it’s all about just executing that pass and setting up a corner three one of the best shots in basketball and doing it in a way that allows McDaniels to take a dribble because he’s in so much space

And I think in order for him to consistently hit these levels it’s all about showing the patience to do so you see on this possession rather than driving into the defense that is kind of set up in a wall to stop him an Just Dances around Go’s screen a few times

Waits for the corner Defender to dig down to help on Rudy’s role and then finds the man that that Defender just left open again that’s all about the patience he can get anything he wants at any time but when Anthony Edwards waits for the advantage to show itself rather

Than trying to force it open he makes the playmaking game a lot easier for himself and that’s exactly what he does on this final possession so he rejects this screen and curls around to collapse the defense again that’s when this low man is going to have to come over and

Help and then it’s that open Corner shooter in Conley who can punish the late close out and sidestep his way into a trademark 3 in terms of making the right play making it consistently and doing it without the mistakes that we do expect from a high usage Young Star I

Think this was one of if not the best playmaking performances in edwards’s career and certainly his best of the season if he can keep doing this the ceiling of Minnesota’s offense is going to Skyrocket thanks again for watching how and GRS Please Subscribe for more

The kid is growing up before our eyes.

  1. Ant does not need to make some advanced pass to be a good playmaker. His gravity going to the basket is so insane that a simple kick out would be deadly on its own. Considering Jaden is a great corner 3pt shooter and KAT's recent tendency to actually stand in the corner, this just might be the thing the wolves need to open the floodgates on offense.

  2. Probably the most mature Ant game of the season, maybe his career so far. He'll be getting triple-doubles regularly if he can move in this direction.

  3. I think with how the officiating is going and issues with Free throw attempts, this was a breath of fresh air for Ant… There's other ways to go. If he can play like this most of the time he can dictate the 4th quarter.

  4. You can tell how he swings between iso 1v3 games with some games in which he does almost nothing but pass, he is actively trying to discover the right balance. He is growing and will get there.

  5. the dreaded offensive game of antman, kat mike jaden are all in 3 piont lane waiting to catch and shoot 3s, whie rudy is on pixk and roll ready, plus the nba lone pectpect moving jumpshot of edwards. Incidentally wolves is the most defensive team in the league… leonard once said that jumpshot of antman is unique, the jordan way.

  6. These DHOs are great. Gobert isn't a threat on the outside, but putting him in this action brings his defender up, or creates space for ANT to work. DHO screens are more effective screens, and naturally create more opportunities than the standard pick and roll.

  7. How do we adjust the performance for Milwaukee's putrid defense? Beasley (still) has no clue on D so it's all about avoiding Lopez.

  8. Great Breakdown!! I get frustrated when Ant takes on 1 on 3 or 4 or the whole team alot but this is great game for him I believe he continue to get better!! This is by far my favorite player on the team

  9. Ant just keeps getting more comfortable using Rudy’s screens effectively. Love to see them growing in PnR

  10. Having to put Beasley on Ant, what the h*** happened to the Bucks, sjeesh. Great vid as always. Hope this can continue with a better defender on him bc being able to go over 120 consistently while being able to hold teams under 100 … that sounds pretty amazing.

  11. Yeah, that is game with a team practically handicapped, how ever the wolves lost some games where Edward lost more balls than any players in the game and from team 10 and 13 seeds, I never seen a guys that waste so many shots

  12. Thi is super encouraging. I'd still love to see a more sophisticated offense in general, but it is truly great to see the offense adjust to recent issues in real time with Ant starting to use Rudy in a two-man game, Ant becoming more aware of his gravity in general, and KAT starting to let it fly.

Next I'd like to see A) Jaden identify his role in the offense (maybe just as a cutter/corner 3-point shooter, but he's capable of more), and B) late game offensive sets.
