Davion Mitchell, Malik Monk & Coach Brown | Postgame Pressers 2.11.24

Trying to slow down Shay and and jayen in the game um I think that uh the beginning of the game I think they got a little bit comfortable um I think that um we kind of let him get easy basket to get going and it’s kind of hard to stop

When stop someone like that when they got a rhythm especially how how good of a player they both are Shay and Jay Jaylen Williams so we just got to come out from the back and be aggressive and not let them get easy buckets Mike said after the Detroit game he he talked to

The team about the stretch that you guys were on um given that it was a bunch of teams in the playoff mix and and these Road games before the allstar rages what do you guys need to do over these next few games to to make sure you’re right

Before the time um I think just take take one game at a time um I mean not look not look forward not look at the playoffs uh kind of just take one game at a time and just focus on that one team and and and try to get out to win

Every game I think every team in the west is is really good they all competitive um they are really good players I mean it’s a really good lead so taking one game at a time and just uh try to try to win more than we lose with

You scoring 14 points it’s you know the minutes that haven’t always been there for you throughout the season um guys always talk about your professionalism and your your ability to stay ready but just what’s it been like for you going through that and not necessarily long

When the minutes are coming um mean to learn a lot from it um I mean kind of learn it like you said to stay ready um be in situations where sometimes team the team is going to need you to to play Big minutes sometimes you just got to be

Out there and support um the the players as are playing so just kind of just keep working um and staying ready like you said yeah you guys were down 24 one point close to within six or seven how did you guys dig dig that hole and how

Did you able to climb back um I think just staying aggressive um not not just waving the title and saying this game is over um I think they kind of got to look a little bit relax and I mean we just try to get points in transition um turn

Turn them over and just hit easy shots and and I think that’s what we did um it’s always hard to stop all Allstar um so you really can’t stop him um you can just try to throw something at them um throw things at them to slow him down um

But I think we started off a little too slow and that’s why we um lost the game it’s kind of hard to come back especially with a team like this um what are they number three in the west um so yeah man it’s hard to come down with it

Um come back when you down so big to a good team yeah speaking of that I mean the six SE to nothing run in the third quarter what what what was happening in in that moment from your perspective and and what was the talk in the Huddle um

And what was the mindset that allowed you guys to sort of get back in there uh 18 turnovers with 30 points um I can’t have four turnovers um domas can’t have five so uh yeah we just can’t turn the ball up and in terms of you know this stretch

You guys had the Nuggets Friday you play them again later in the week today’s game Phoenix just this stretch before the allstar break what’s what’s the focus for you guys in terms of ending the the first half on the red man you just said it ended on the right note

However that um however we can do that um on the defensive end offensive end um however we can do that man we got to end on a high note um for sure so we can come back um from Allstar Break um and and finish the season

Strong I about bis former team my dog my dog what can that just as a character as person man a a a a great person um a leader a vet um a man with a lot of knowledge um so he might sound weird when he talk man but

But but he’s saying some some some good things and the right things so yeah I love Biz man I know you said before that you guys didn’t even really talk about basketball lot about life exactly just kind of kind of talk about how important that was especially I think it was like

Your second year yeah man when I was when I was in Charlotte going through I was going through a lot um not playing playing not playing um so yeah he was just talking to me about life man and um how to stay stay positive look forward

Um and try to plan things accordingly so you’re just not going out there with with with nothing on your mind and in terms of on the floor it seems like he’s really reinvented himself as just a really service energy man a energy a energy vet that’s that’s what he been

Doing um his whole career man but I think he stepped it up a little bit more now cuz he a little smarter um knows a little bit more about the game um the NBA game so yeah man it’s a good pickup for y’all Cru Y and we real quick I

Didn’t have my repor on will you just talk a little bit about how you guys dug that hole and then managed to fight back but how you got yeah um I think I said a little bit before um 18 turnovers uh for 30 points um it’s it’s going to be hard

To to to get out of that that hole um especially with a good team like OKC um yeah man we just can’t start the game and and and go and let the teams when they had eight runs we can’t let it be six 16 to two um it’ rather be 16 to9 16

To 10 something like that we got to we got to shorten the other teams runs thanks everyone uh we came out a little slow uh which allowed them to be comfortable uh offensively they hit a couple of early threes got to the rim on us and uh that

Kind of set the tone and then I thought our guys picked it up um I thought we played really hard we came out even at halftime uh the first few minutes do what we needed to do to not uh get back in the game but just to possibly even take the

Lead at some point sooner than later and and they took a time out and I don’t know if we thought that it was going to be easy or that we finally found our Rhythm but we didn’t come out with the same um sense of urgency and they hit us

In the mouth again on a 19 to3 run which is a huge huge run and and then you know uh then our our bench man I got to give credit to our bench our bench brought a lot of energy um I thought uh Malik obviously was was really big for us he

Hit some timely shots to keep us in the game and I even thought defensively he was uh he was pretty good for us um Davon and Keon were were were big uh same with Trey those three guys they brought an energy and and a level of physicality to the game that uh uh

Helped change the tide and give us a chance cutting it almost to single digits a couple of times so um those those three those three guys and throw Malik in there Off the Bench were really really good and domas domas I thought he played hard uh you know he tried to get

It done on both ends of the floor for us and um but that those group of guys were were really good for us uh at the end of the day you know the the 30 points off our turnovers was just just a little too much uh um you know and situation on the

Road versus uh one of the best teams in the west you got to take care of the basketball and um you know if you do turn it over hopefully they’re not bad turnovers obviously they were bad turnovers and that’s what equated to the 30 points uh on top of that you know you

Got to give them credit because um uh in the past the past two games we really hurt him on offensive glass and we were headed that way and halftime they did whatever they could do adjustment wise and came out kept us off the glass in the second half which was

Impactful and then the Jaylen Williams and SGA uh SGA played like a MVP candidate you know he we we threw the kitchen sink at him and he still scored 38 um and then Jaylen Williams was really really big and and I say he was big cuz he had 32 but he was extremely

Efficient uh throughout the course of the night going 13 for for 19 I I still got to figure out though what how I can help my players better because uh you know I I know we we we take a lot of Threes but man we we just got I thought

We got crushed tonight at the free throw line and and uh you know maybe we could have got there a few more times or limited them from getting there but uh it’s a it’s a big hole to try to get out of you know 13 to 27 on the road when

You have those other problems from turning the ball over and uh and stuff like that is there Comon red in your mind about the turnovers uh yeah we you know when we get a little loose with the ball you know um it happens uh or you know or loose SL focus

When we’re not as focused and we’re loose with the ball that’s one or we try to thread the needle SL hit the Home Run play and uh those two areas you know you can call it whatever name you want to call but those two areas um are are what

Usually does Us in ter turnover wise because when we get pressured we’re pretty good handling the pressure it’s a lot of it’s on us uh when it comes to turnovers and in terms of you know you guys allowing the big run Midway through the third quarter and then climbing back

In yeah just what was what were you seeing during the run and what was the conversation like on on the bench when and sort of the mindset of you guys that you noticed when you guys were climbing Back start on defense end the floor I mean they one possession they just

Throve drove down the middle and not a single guy reacted to the dribble drive he just dunked it you know and and so we we just we just went through stretches where we didn’t defend which gave them the confidence or belief that they needed and and when I finally went with

Uh you know Davon and and Keon and um you know the guys on the bench and and uh I think even Alex might have played a little bit you know uh we start doing a better job defending we were getting our hands on the ball getting out and

Running and uh Davon hit some timely threes for us too but uh that’s all it was we just cranked up our defense and it was led by the two young guys and and Davon and and Keon all right thanks thank you’all thank
