Should Donovan Mitchell get more MVP recognition? | NBA Countdown

So we talked about how good the Cavaliers have been but I just want to shed some light here on Donovan Mitchell specifically because he’s on Pace to be the second player in Cavs franchise history to average at least 25 points five rebounds and five assists per game

In a single season along with who else of course one Mr LeBron James and I spoke with Mitchel about where he fits in this entire MVP conversation this is one of the most interesting and wide openen MVP races that we’ve seen do you think that you should be brought up more in that

Conversation most definitely do I feel like I belong there I definitely do I feel like I’m top three I’m definitely there but ultimately you know to get there you have to continue to win you know and that’s all I’m going to do is continue to find ways to help my team

Win and you know ultimately when it comes down to April handle business so our friend Tim bontemps put out his straw poll where he mimics the MVP voting recently and it was really interesting not just because Nicola yic was the the leading vote getter at number one but when you start to look

Down the ballot KK of all the guys that might potentially be left off Donovan Mitchell was one of them and looking at his numbers how do you square that well I mean because so many guys are putting up better numbers but you can make the same case for a guy like Anthony Edwards

And when I think about Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers I I think about their growth right and that’s what I want to see out of Donovan Mitchell his growth as a leader you look at Anthony Edwards the other night call Anthony towns was dominating and he

Comes behind him in the post game interview and say I don’t know why they’re double teaming me right they should be double teaming you you’re the best offensive player that is on our team right that’s putting the key in your guy back because he know that he’s

Going to need cat to have that confidence it’s the same with with with Donovan Mitchell when it comes down to guys like Evan Moy but no doubt he should been in the MVP conversation he is yeah it’s just a matter that this this year’s races is incredibly tight

Okay so there’s kind of two two things going on with the Cavs though it’s the Cavs we’re seeing right now and something that you’re keeping an eye on that could make their future a little bit blurry here oh Malika there’s three I call it my Cavs trifolds I’m getting a

Little older so I talk you about PR focal all right in the foreground here they have they’re 16 and two JB bicker staff is a chancef for Coach of the Year Donovan Mitchell’s probably going to make the all NBA team again Jared Allen should be on the all defensive team

They’ve played awesome that’s great then you look a little bit farther and you see what the real challenge is tonight and going forward which is Jared Allen and Evan Mobi sharing the cour together they are extremely talented both are playing well but they just aren’t effective because the Cavs can’t spread

The floor when they’ve played together this year the Cavs out scored opponents by 38 points that’s really good when when Jared Allen has played with Dean Wade who was the replacement starter while Moy was out the KNE injury almost plus 200 they don’t work well together

And as well as they need to and that is an issue because the third layer is that this summer yes you’ve got the Donovan Mitchell contract that’s a big thing for the franchise but also Evan MO and Jared Allen are contract extension eligible and you’ve got to figure out if you’re

The Cavs if they’re going to work together if you’re going to give them nine figure extensions look that right there you working it I wouldn’t be surprised though if the Cavs make it to the Eastern Conference Finals well if they do that then maybe some of those decisions the financial ones they need

To make all of a sudden they become a lot more clear through those Tri F NBA is

On NBA Countdown, Donovan Mitchell spoke with Malika Andrews about the wide-open MVP race before Brian Windhorst, Kendrick Perkins and Chiney Ogwumike weigh-in. Windy then puts on his Cavaliers trifocals to discuss the Cleveland Cavaliers and the big decisions looming.

  1. Mitchell is just a lesser version of prime Harden- great on regular season – disappears in playoffs .

  2. Mitchell is an explosive scorer, but not capable to be a 1A on a Championship team. Would make a good 1B (aka Kyrie w/ LeBron) if he didn't dominate & shoot the ball so much. He's maybe in the Top 10-15 range

  3. Love Jokic but
Winning a championship means your coach and teammates are proven to be great. Him having another great year on a great team is not as impressive as
Shai having a great year on a very young team
    Free simple logic
Also it’s a lot of season left
If the Mavs keep climbing Luka has to be considered

  4. It’s clear that he is a mvp candidate. Outside of his numbers 28/5/5 . 28 – puts him top 5 in points.
    – He’s also top 5 in def
    – he’s top 5 in wins shares
    – top 4 record in entire nba

    – did the majority of damage missing TWO allstars for over a month. Now that they are back , THEY ARE STILL WINNING.

He also doesn’t need the ball 24/7 in his hands, can play off ball and isnt he top 5 in clutch points?

Why is this even a thing? Mitchell imho is top 2-3 for mvp.

  5. windy must dont watch many cavs games… he spreads fake mitchell rumors and he said allen and mobley cant play together even though we have a top 2 defense in the last 2 years and top 5 last 3…. and btw mobley 8-13 from 3 since returning from injury 41 percent overall from 3… on a min restriction too

  6. Its a two man race between Jokic and Shai. I would give the edge to SGA. When I look at the Thunder roster I go Jerry Seinfeld mode: who are these people?

  7. don’t wanna hear opinions from people who haven’t seen more than 3 full cavs games this year. donovan has been incredible most games. maybe not top 3 necessarily but he’s definitely in the conversation

  8. Brian Windhorst lacks insight; they perform effectively both as a unit and individually.
JB is effectively managing their playing time to foster a connection.
DG/Mobley and Spida/Allen represent the building blocks of their chemistry, and I anticipate a rotation shift to DG/Allen and Spida/Mobley 8 games and then rotate again.
With this progression, they could potentially establish the most dynamic offense in the NBA.
