Jayson Tatum: MVP Award NOT as Important as Winning Celtics Championship

Jayson Tatum: MVP Award NOT as Important as Winning Celtics Championship

Bing right here long time no see um you started the program that you with with the funding in St Louis with the single parents and the and do you want to expand that can you kind of tell us a little bit more about what went into the thinking of wanting to start that

Program and how important that is to you yeah absolutely um you know my Foundation is based in St Louis um obviously it’s where I’m firm very prideful about um the city and Community I grew up in and trying to um impact and change you know those around me um so yes

The uh initiative will start in St Louis and hopefully you know as it continues to grows and get bigger and we get more resources I would love to expand uh but as of right now it’s um just focus on single parent families and St Louis at

The moment over on your right Jason you you’ve talked about in the past wanting to win MVP that being a big thing for you you know you’ve talked this year about the importance of winning and kind of sacrific and putting that above that personal goal for you where does that

Lie for you that mvp Chase obviously people are talking about a little bit more now with you how important is that to you at this stage of your career uh I mean I think uh individual awards are important I’m not going to say that they’re not right everybody

Wants to win a championship but you want to be rewarded for the work that you put in um for the things that you go out there and do on the court um they have individual awards for a reason and you know as a competitor as a player uh you

Grew up watching your favorite players win um MVPs and First Team all NBA and things like that so of course you know uh you want to win those things uh but it can’t you know it can’t take precedent over play the right way U and doing the things that you have to do

In order for your team to you know essentially be the best team in the league and um have a a chance to win a championship so uh would I love to win yes but you know apparently us losing in the finals two years ago affects you

Know what people think of me now so uh I guess I got some ground to make up but you know everybody who has a vote you know they vote the CR criteria is different you know everybody thinks differently uh right wrong or indiff it is what it is so you can’t tell people

What they what they should look for when they vote but uh you know it’s the beauty of it again second row hey Jason Emma pollitz how has your relationship with Paulo banero grown since his time in college at Duke up to right now where we’re kind of seeing him rise to stardom

So early in his career uh yeah it’s been great couldn’t be happier for him um you know to see the things that he did while he was at Duke uh that’s that’s when I first got to to know him meet him and talk to him and obviously since he’s been in the

League got a chance to you know meet his his dad and his mom um you know signed with Jordan brand so obviously we have that connection as well so uh he’s just a great great person great kid works extremely hard obviously only in his second year and

Already an Allstar um so you know the work is there uh the talent is there for sure so I’m excited to see you know um you know where he takes it U couldn’t be happier for him um so you know this is only the beginning for

Him front row on your right Aussie B said with the maroon highr morouse College you’ve reached the point of your career where the the All-Star game and the All-Star break is is not news for you at this point in your career does the anticipation change for you at all

What is your what is your focus at this point for you uh reaching the All-Star Break um yeah well I may not be um caught off guard by making an allstar game I I still am very grateful um to be here and thankful to um get that um cuz

It’s not something you take for granted right you know it’s only only 24 of us get to be here every year it’s you know 450 500 players in the league so that’s a really big deal um you know it’s a special weekend right you got the best

Players in the world uh a lot of retired guys come around and you know you get to see them it’s great for the fans it’s great for your family um um so that’s you know that’s kind of my favorite part about the weekend is just bringing able

To bring my son obviously my my mom and seeing all the retired guys that I grew up watching um getting to spend time with them so all weekend is great very honored to be here and uh you know look forward to make him many more third row standing on your

Right how does what what about the allstar game makes it so great to play in and what about it makes it um um a great presence to be in that’s a great question what’s your name Jeremiah Jeremiah uh what makes it special I think just the history of it the you

Know when I was your age watching my favorite players uh you know compete and play an All-Star Game and make highlights uh it was a very special weekend for me to watch and I could only dream and imagine of one day being able to wear that

Jersey and um you know live out my dream and uh 5 years ago I made my first allar game and I’ve been fortunate enough to make make it every single year and just everything about Allstar Weekend um is special and uh the game is you know

Super exciting you get to play with guys that you’re normally competing against um so you know that makes a differ as well and uh you just get to share of the court with with with some of the greatest players ever play and uh you know it’s just memories you’ll have for

The rest of your life thank you go ahead in the front center Jason you have a huge fan community of kids in Mexico and Latin America what piece of advice would you give him from your career piece of advice yes um you know always always just follow your heart follow your

Dreams right U never let somebody tell you what you can or can’t do and uh you know people not laughing at your dreams you probably not dreaming big enough so um you know reach for the moon over here left side third row yeah um what do you think about the season of

Victor banama and you think he deserve the work of the your title thank you uh yeah he’s having a great year um you know unlike any other player we’ve you know probably ever seen at this point uh you know I think he he for sure deserves to be in the conversation some other

Great rookies out there uh Chad hram and OKC I think you know those will probably be the two guys off the top of my my head right now but uh yeah I love watching him play he’s going to be obviously incredible for a very long time so yeah just uh you know he’s

Having a great year and you know U continue to keep watching him doing great things David back Center uh David Aldridge the athletic Jason you have been bestowed with the powers of the commissioner you can do anything you want you can make one change in the NBA what would you Do one change uh um that’s a funny one if you get a tech right bear with me if you get a tech for overreacting to a call and you were right like if they go back and look and you know the coaches do the challenge and they overturn the

Call that Tech should be rescinded you should get your money back if you get a tech for overreacting to a call that that was deemed incorrect or whatever you should get your money back Tim on the right side I’m very surprised that you’re uh suggestion um I

Think it’s a fair one uh you mentioned before about how you’ve been watching the AER game for a long time since you were like his age as a kid obviously LeBron has been front and center basically that entire time that’s basically the face of the league as

Curious as he’s near in the end of his career who do you see is stepping into sort of that presence going forward when whenever he does eventually leave the stage and is that something you’ve envisioned you potentially being able to do uh absolutely um and I think they’re

The the league is in a great place right now the the amount of High character guys the amount of talent throughout the NBA uh you know the fact that LeBron and KD and and Steph are still you know considered one of the best 10 whatever you know players in the league right now

Now at their age and uh how long they’ve been playing is incredible as well as all the younger guys you know whether it’s guys my age or the guys you know a little bit older with the Yokes and and Giannis or you know guys younger than me

Um so I think the the league is in a great place uh but yeah when when LeBron retires you know the face of the league uh that’s tough but you know we win a championship I got something to say about it I know that take last two

Here and then over on the second row at your young age you ear respect on the Boston self distin if you have someone to thank for the person that you are today who will be in why if I had one person to think of who I am today yeah

Like in the entire world yeah thank you for the person that you are today oh who will it be my mom um easy answer my mom raised me to be the the young man that I am today uh I give her all the credit um you know for all my good qualities you

Have a idol in the basketball Kobe Kobe Bry that was uh that was my idol and the god that inspired me to um ultimately get to the point where I am today and strive to be the best version of myself last question second row on the

Right Jason this time last year you went for 55 points grabbed the MVP of the All-Star Game are you going for a repeat MVP here you going for for more than 55 and if not who’s your favorite to win the MVP tomorrow night um hot take I probably won’t score 55 points tomorrow

Um it’s a it’s a field thing like you know starting in the game tomorrow you get off to a good Rhythm you get a couple layups maybe a couple threes you look up now you got 16 points and then it’s like all right you know I might

Might try to go get it again I wonder who’s the last person to win back to back allstar game MVPs not sure that uh I know that uh but if I if it’s not going to be me I might say um maybe like Donovan Mitchell maybe so somebody from our team why Mitchell

Uh just feel like he’s athletic enough obviously uh I think key part of it is starting right probably going to play a little bit more than the rest of the guys um is he starting wait is he starting I might be wrong with I don’t know

Who the fifth the new fifth starter is so uh I think just I was I had like 55 last year and I think he was on my team I want to say he might have 40 something so was close uh so I he’s just somebody that can get really hot right in allstar

Game if you can get hot have some electric dunks and things like that um you have a great shot

INDIANAPOLIS — During All Star Weekend, Jayson Tatum addressed his MVP status, suggesting that the Celtics’ loss in the Finals two years ago is impacting voters’ perceptions of him: “Apparently us losing in the Finals two years ago affects what people think of me now, so I guess I got some ground to make up.”

  2. Haha "if you get a tech and the call gets overturned you should get your money back" Tatum is not just a great player but a great guy all class.

  3. Anyone copying Kobe mentality is going on the wrong path. I hope the Celts win with all the talent they have. Jayson needs to win a championship first and MVP will follow. I’m a big fan but He’s still not a complete team player in crunch time! Hopefully this year!

  4. Jason Tatum is not NBA MVP material. He is too soft. Secondly, why all of a sudden Tatum has decided to help his community and Jaylen Brown has been doing stuff like that ever since he’s been in the league. As for my Celtics record it’s all because of the outstanding play of Prozingis, Holday, White and old man Al. Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown had their chances an d they couldn’t get it done with ISO ball. So, the league should not give Tatum or Brown any consideration for MVP. They haven’t done anything to deserve it. If you give it the a player on the Celtics it should be a combo award to Prozingis, Holiday and White as MVP.
