Vince Carter on which Jersey he wants retired: “Toronto, Toronto, Toronto. It has to be, it’s where it all started”

Full quote: “Toronto, Toronto, Toronto. It has to be, it’s where it all started… Yes I had great years in Jersey (Nets) but it started there. My confidence and understanding the player I could be in the league was trending upwards still in Toronto”

Man, it’s super tough. When he was our guy, it was amazing to see him play & you loved him entirely. Once he switched up on us, you hated him just as much and hard as you loved him. Maybe one day, but as of now it feels too soon.

  2. And it will be. Maybe not the first number going up but 15 will hang in Scotiabank Arena at some point

  3. Bobby_Webster

I’m for it. but *only after* #7 is up there. and if it doesn’t happen, I’m not losing any sleep

He did a lot in the 7 years that he spent with the raptors. He helped build the fanbase that we have with his electrifying play…… with that said he still doesn’t deserve to have his number retired in my eyes but we are a team without rich history. 7 years with nothing being won and the controversy surrounding his last 2 years here kind of negates a lot of the good he did for the raptors. He will more than likely be retired but pretty much any other team in the league wouldn’t retire his number under these circumstances

Toronto fans can be a bit like Philly fans.

  6. Never, Never, Never.

I see the propoganda for this already happening with people holding signs outside the games saying #retire15

  7. canadianqazaq

I hope it doesn’t happen. We forgive but we don’t forget.

“I had great years in Jersey”

Naw Vince, those were your _PRIME_ years!

  9. He’ll never be anything except a raptor to the world, he’s iconic. Lowry first but he should be there

Is Vince the only player to force a disastrous, franchise crippling, trade then have the franchise he left still want to retire his jersey? Dude has serious charisma to pull that off haha

  11. No thanks. I want the first number retired to be DeRozan’s or Lowry’s.

  12. CazOnReddit

    Never, never, never

He knows how he left, he’s never apologized for it and his accomplishments in a Raptors jersey do not somehow negate the ugliness of Vince’s forced exit from the team he quit on

    He screwed over his teammates

Putting side any emotional feelings on the subject, while with the Raps the dude had an all-NBA 2 team, an all-NBA 3 team, one playoff series win, and some all-star appearances.

The Raps didn’t win anything with him, and the accolades he collected in Toronto were not impressive.

The franchise and the city moved on from Vince a long time ago. There is no good argument to retire his jersey.

It’s baffling how there are so many people still against this. It’s arguable that the Toronto Raptors may not even be a thing in 2024 without Vince’s influence, regardless of how it ended. The amount of Canadian basketball talent in the league can directly be linked to Vince’s popularity and influence when he played for the Raptors. Time heals all wounds, its just the weird edgelords still holding grudges.

Maybe he shouldn’t have quit on the team.

  16. can’t wait for this to happen so the old head raptor fans cry.

  17. HaratoBarato

Do Lowry, then Vince. He’s going to have to wait.

  18. Big_Albatross_3050

Lowry has to be 1st, but Vince can be the 2nd one.

Definitely the way he left, even if that was more an indictment on the FO at the time, is still a very sore spot for the much older fans.

Time and especially winning heals a lot of old wounds, so I personally think he should be retired for putting Toronto on the map.

People didn’t even watch the clip. The question was: “which jersey are you rocking [to the] hall of fame, if you had to choose one?” The context was talking about Vince’s upcoming induction into the basketball hall of fame. Not about jersey retirement at all.

  20. chequemark

I’m retiring Vince before Demar or Lowry. Who knows if we would have been relocated without his stardom.

  21. Vince is going to have his Jersey retired one day in Toronto and I can’t wait to see all the haters tears.

MFers are still salty about things that happened like 20 years ago, either weren’t alive at the time or were very young.

The team won a championship and people will still hate on Vince and the current team.

  22. Still don’t think Raps should retire his jersey

  23. SadInternal9977

The franchise was in total disarray when VC got here. The season before there was huge turnover in players, owners, coaches and management, plus a lockout.

Without Vince the Raptors could easily have gone the way of Vancouver. its not just his play on the court, he stabilized the franchise and created excitement around pro basketball in Canada. No Carter no guarantee there would be a Raptors for Lowry to play for.

Im a Day 1 fan and was upset when he left but its been a long time and I’m over it. The championship helped a lot.

raptors should be a part of him going to the hall of fame and retire his number right after Lowry. he was still a good player with the Nets but there he was just another player, there not the mega star he was here.

Edit: Every image and mention of VC on ASG weekend was him in a Raptors jersey not the Nets or anyone else. Everyone in the league knows his best years were the Toronto years.

I will finally forgive him for the break-up if he goes to the Hall in a Raps jersey.

  25. We’re all aware how badly the relationship ended. I’m happy all the principal parties involved in this have grown up, admitted their roles in the matter, and moved on. UNLIKE, the petulant children still stuck in the 2000s populating this sub.

Every year I read the clamouring for the purple to come back, like the most iconic shots of that jersey aren’t with him in it.

He put Toronto on the NBA map. Full stop. That’s all I care about. I grew up – realized the situation was complicated, and moved TF on, like everyone else that matters in the situation did.

  26. Acceptable_Age9416

I’ll always attribute Vince as the reason I picked up a ball.

  27. WobbleKun

feels like anyone under 35 years old are just parroting their grumpy brothers/fathers. no one under 35 should have a real recollection of vince. and no timmy you dont remember shit as a 10 year old or at least where you can truly grasp the greatness and the business of vince. it’d be Tennessee Raptors if not for vince lol.

  28. BuffytheBison

Funny how Bosh and Carter and T-Mac all started proudly embracing their “ex-Raptor” identity more strongly in the wake of the ’19 run lol
