What makes Jayson Tatum’s game so lethal? πŸ”₯ Austin Rivers breaks it down | NBA Today

We should all feel like we got to do a little bit more cuz we didn’t win and I want to get over that hump I want to get back to the finals been so close these last two years that want to do whatever it takes it’s there we

Go and a kiss off to the crow you know we’re the best team in the league so winning takes care of everything the Boston Celtics right now are on top 43 and 12 owning the best record in the league which by the way is the best record they’ve had at the All-Star break

Since 2008 to 2009 now their new additions of Drew holiday and Chris STS porzingis have been major boost this season but one thing has remained constant since 2017 Jason Tatum and his rise to super stardom he spoke about it with our own Malika Andrews at All-Star

Weekend take a listen who do you think is the best player in the NBA right now uh myself is that have you always had that kind of confidence because I don’t I asked you that question a year ago and you said it was Giannis so what’s given you that

Confidence I got a lot of respect for a lot of guys in the league yanis for sure um joic obviously just won and be guys that won MVPs in the list goes on the league is in a great place I truly do believe every night I step on the floor

I’m the best player is that a mentality that you’ve worked to hone because I think back to the 2022 finals that wonderful story you worked on with Ramona shelburn about how difficult it was in the days afterwards wanting to just be in your room be sort of shut

Away and being pretty disappointed in yourself you put all of that on yourself did you have to work to sort of forgive yourself in order to move forward uh I’m a big believer in everything happens for a reason and maybe I needed to go through that um for something haven’t

Figured that out yet but uh it happened and I’ve I’ve grown from it I’ve learned from from it in a weird way I’m thankful for that experience as tough as it was as much as it hurt um I’m thankful that I went through that and I think it’s

Made me a better person than player has your process changed at all I mean it just talking to you now it seems like the way that you were stepping onto the floor you always had that you’ve evoked Kobe you’ve talked about that that quiet confidence it feels

Louder yeah uh and maybe I’ve kind of grown into my own in a sense right uh still like I said still young 25 but it’s my seventh year in the league and I’m very confident because I know how hard I work I know how much I put into

This game I know how badly I want to be one of the best how badly I want to win it’s like why wouldn’t I be confident cuz I know how hard I work you heard it Jason Tatum he said it he’s the best player in the world on the best team

Right now and he might have a point uh a point forward because he’s running that position right more and more you see what I did right there all okay let’s break it down and I’m glad to have a teammate today this season Jason Tatum has continued his growth as a playmaker

Putting up a career high and assists and he’s been taking care of the ball too his assist to turnover rate is also a career best so Austin what do you like in JT’s game this year it’s always fun to see the Arc of a score become a true

Leader and player it’s one thing to be able to score and get Buckets but now we’re seeing him make plays for his teammates and that’s why we’re seeing so much success look across the court Jaylen Brown he sees attention he gets nothing special Quick Pass to Jaylen get

Him going easy three here come pick and roll porus has been great for Boston that’s a lethal combination Leal combination you got pick and pop that small little window he’s making that pass now he can thread the needle pocket pass to the dunk porzingis gets the dunk

And then this this is my favorite play look at fake double team split the defense this what he does right use that scoring ability to create for your teammates Derek white we know one of the best role players in the league wide open three you cannot let that man do

That cash cash money and you know what’s cool uh it’s been the ball movement and him running the point point forward look at these numbers I mean the Celtics have used their ball ball movement to help give them a massive Point differential it’s been truly impressive they are the

Sixth team over the last 10 seasons to win uh games by 10 or more points and that company actually includes the Warriors Dynasty so Ramona after the finals loss in 2022 Jason Tatum said he was in a dark place that’s what you reported and you know but now we fast

Forward to now and he’s saying he’s the best player in the world why did he have this growth I mean Jason in after the finals when they lost that year he He just flat out said I ran out of gas like I get I just got tired I did too much

During the regular season I played so many minutes during the playoffs and he ran out of guess and he goes I will never let that happen again I remember he was telling me all that summer he goes you know I usually like to come out

To LA and play and he trains with this trainer Drew Handlin out here and they usually go golf every once in a while uh yeah it’s La in the summertime he golfed like once all summer he was in the gym he was getting ready he’s averaging 35

And a half minutes this year but I think they’re being strategic with how they use him and in the way that that they’re taxing him because they need him to be fresh in the playoffs and the other thing the Celtics did which we talked about at the time and I don’t know if

Everybody believed it at the time with this is going to be a great play for them was to get porzingis I mean when IAL when I talked to porzingis and I talked to Tatum for this story I did about a month ago Tatum basically said to me when Miami was switching on us

When teams would go Zone against us we did not have an answer that was what would happen to them in the playoffs and poor zingis is the ultimate answer because if you put a small guy on him earlier his career people put Smalls on him they put like Marcus Smart would

Guard him or Jay Crowder would guard him and try to rough him up he’s beefed up he’s worked on his post game he doesn’t dribble as much and he’s he’s much more efficient one of the most efficient post players in the league and then if you

Put a small guy on him he just shoots over the top of him and so I think he gives them that look that answer that they haven’t had in the playoffs the last couple years and Tatum Ian he’s compared him to Pal Gasol he’s compared

Him to those kinds of that that ilk and he could be that if he’s healthy yeah let’s welcome Zach low back to the show because if you’re saying how gazal you’re talking about championships and Zach Boston has been the best team all season long and their record truly shows

It now in order for them to Hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy in June what do you want to see from them in the second half they were my pick to win the title before the season I think they’re the best team in the NBA look they take more

Threes than anyone in the league and they have the number one offense in the league they passed Indiana right before the All-Star break so what they are doing is clearly working but and we have seen this before there are going to be games that are ugly and nasty and grimy

And when the threes are not falling and when those games happen is your fallback plan gets stuck in the mud and go one-on-one and take a bunch of step back threes or is it touch the paint get to the rim get to the free throw line get some offensive rebounds when Boston

Stays connected to that goal when they get into the paint they’re pretty much unbeatable when they they devolve into just one-on-one step back threes that’s when they can be beaten late in games so I’m watching their paint touches on those nights when all those beautiful threes aren’t going in cuz you know

They’re going to be those nights who you’re going to have to win some of those games along the way what jumps out to you when you see the odds to take home the amazing award Chen it’s the name that you’ve been talking about for weeks you came on ESPN BET live we were

On Sports Center together and you said why is Jason Tatum not near Nicole yic and Shay gildas Alexander this guy’s the best player on by far the best regular season team and yet last week he was like 100 to1 50 to1 now people are I think Chen when they heard you talking

Betters went to the window and started betting on Jason Tatum cuz that number is now down to 25 to1 I still think there’s some meat on the bone there because if history shows us anything the people who bet on this award have generally given it to the best player on

The best team and that is without question Jason Tatum Tyler thank you so much for giving the people what they want and by people I mean myself I was right we we started Trend we’ll talk to you soon

  1. Tatum is a ball hog on a great team. Went to the finals and choked a few years ago. Jelous that he will not be the future of the nba.. (Anthony Edwards, Luka, Jalen Brunson) never was my friend πŸ™‚

  2. Tatum says he is the best right now is freaky hilarious he is the best at choking when he forcing a great team.I would like him to keep that same energy in the playoffs Tatum has to led his team to the finals and win it all Im team Boston but not Tatum or Brown.

  3. Tatum has a better resume than your favorite player if he’s under 33 (other than kawhi)and he’s only 25, im talking with no research but please someone prove me wrong

  4. Tatum plays on both sides at a high level. Once lebron regressed, they stopped giving mvp to the best player on the best team cause, and went back to who they think is the best in the world, even if their team isn’t winning lol

  5. People hate Tatum but try so hard to compare their team's best players to him to make them look legit. Whether you like it or not, he's set the standard for a superstar of this era.
"oh Shai has better stats, oh Brunson is playing so good he's got great numbers, oh Ant Edwards looking legit vs Tatum" guess what?Tatum has a much better team and still putting up legit numbers even with 4 other 20-25 ppg threats on his team.

  6. Idky I’m not as worried about the 3’s this year.

Maybe because I’ve watched us win ugly games this year when we weren’t shooting well.

This team feels different right now.

  7. The Narrative that I technically love most about What Stephen A. brought Up recently, Was how Tatum is THE BEST Player, now, on the best, TEAM. How can that Person/overall player, Not be High Up on MVP Voting? Do I personally care if Tatum wins, the Award? No, but It's all about Fairness, Tatum's rising.

  8. For the sake of competition I hope someone in the East takes exception to his comment of being the best.

For Tatum's sake, I hope he doesn't meet Big Bad Jimmy in the playoffs.

  9. Tatum is a 6'8" slasher that can pass very well while also being one of the best volume 3 point shooters in the league. He's a sick mismatch with the ball in his hands because most PF's are too slow to guard him, and most wings are just too small to not get bullied by him. Tatum is excellent off ball too, probably the 2nd best in the NBA behind Curry. He can move around shoot the 3, come off screens into mid range jumpers, and he's a top notch PNR screening threat. Tatum is probably the best rebounding forward besides Giannis, and he's one of the most versatile defensive players in the NBA. He can lock you up on the perimeter and the muscle he's added allows him to anchor the paint more than ever. IMO, he's the best player in the NBA because he's a truly a threat to DOMINATE every single aspect of the game on any given night…on top of being a true 2 way player.

  10. Really don’t understand the Tatum disrespect he just hoops and has fatherly duties but one bad finals at 23 and everyone against him

  11. He's barely the best on celtics.being confident is one thing. But going on the court vs dallas and still think you are the best playernon the flor. You have brain dmg.

  12. A simple reflection. Why is a player averaging 30ppg or more per game on a team that loses half of its games and is likely to be eliminated in the first round more valuable than the most decisive player on the best regular season team, who, by the way, averages the same points or more than any of the other players on the MVP list?

What does "valuable" mean, that your team is 7th in the regular season instead of 10th? or that your team is the best team in the regular season?

This title has been perverted by the same problem that exists with the All-star, and that is the lack of competitiveness of the players themselves and the childishness in giving the awards to the highlights instead of real basketball.

  13. last year Celtics vs Heat ESPN Analytics prediction for Boston going to the final:
    Before Game 1, 97%
    After Game 1, 87%
    After Game 2, 65%
    πŸ™‚

  14. If Tatum didn't play for the Celtics this wouldn't be a discussion, he'd be the face of the league. The rest of the sports world hates Boston and their players on principle and Boston fans are in turn some of the most critical is their own stars. 'No rings? TRASH. Fahkin brake up the Jays, dood.'

    Smdh

  15. Zach, there have been plenty of games where the Celtics have not shot well from 3, things got ugly, and they were able to churn out wins. Playoffs are different yes, but they are getting in reps that they lack last season.

They always repeat the same talking points

  16. Tatum is a 6'8" slasher that can pass very well while also being one of the best volume 3 point shooters in the league. 17. IF he stops jacking threes and focuses more on his post-up and mid-range game, more like a T-mac style of play, he will be truly unstoppable in a Kobe-esque/Tmac type of way with his strength and size. Glad Cassell and Pierce worked on him last summer and it shows, but they need to hammer it to him more.
