I keep seeing people on this sub commenting about re-signing Isaiah Joe in the off-season to an extension like it’s overwhelmingly likely to happen…but my understanding is that we can only offer him a contract with a 140% increase of his current salary under the CBA since he’s under contract for another year still (team option).
Because he’s on such a small contract (roughly $2MM/yr) that means we can only offer him $2.8MM/yr (see reference below) with an early offer (which he’d be crazy to take because his value is MUCH higher) so he’ll likely go to RFA so he can get a fair market price.
Another possibility would be us declining his team option this season and offer him a contract (which would mean he’d be a FA this offseason) and other teams could make offers too.
All of this is saying that there’s a whole lot more to him re-signing than realized by most. I wouldn’t lump him into anything as a sure thing offseason re-signing and if we do, it will be as an RFA.
Is there anything I’m missing or misunderstanding? This stuff can be super confusing, but this seems right on??
Thoughts??
[Salary And Annual Raise Limits:](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/nba-contract-extensions-intro-veteran-zach-zobell-xk4lc?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&utm_campaign=share_via)
Looking at the salary limits on Veteran Extensions, there are two calculations that are needed. The first is for the salary of the first new year of the extended term, the second is how much of a raise he can receive in each subsequent season.
First – the first year may have a salary that is the greater of up to 140% of the last year of the prior contract OR 140% of the Estimated Average Player Salary.
Second – we’ll calculate the annual raises. These raises are limited to 8% of the first extended year’s salary.

They could agree on an extension and decline his team option if he agrees to sign it,can’t they ?
I think we’ll do a similar thing to what we did with Lu Dort. We’ll decline his option and give him something like a 4 yr/$60,000,000 deal.
