Jaylen Brown drops 30, Boston Celtics beat New York Knicks for 8th straight win

Boston Celtics get their eighth win in a row they beat the Knicks they get up by 20 it wasn’t as easy as it looked but the Celtics might just be the most dangerous team in the league right now explain it all on a bonus lockdown Celtics

Podcast Boston baby we do what you can’t locked on number 18 Tatum and brown J team step back we go wet that and slay teams of course the Celtics who else could it be screaming like kg with the lario B Coralis above average assessing the team status best daily pod no cap

Salary matching clutch like bir the DJ keep on replay Prime Time dapping up the truth on the sideline raining JS how we started raising B how we finish locked on Celtics pod home of the winners B hey there welcome back to the lockdown Celtics podcast right here in the

Lockdown podcast netw where it’s your team every day and I got you covered every day Monday through Friday plus bonus podcasts when they play here on the weekends uh even when we have a little bit of a unique situation this is a a YouTube only podcast so I mean if you regularly

Listen to the shows on YouTube then you don’t know the difference but people who might be coming over here because I’ve said before this is going to be a YouTube only there’s some audio things we’re migrating to a new platform blah blah blah blah blah bonus podcast today

On YouTube so I hope you are enjoying this uh or will enjoy this when I actually talk about the Celtics so uh subscribe wherever you get your podcast and all that good stuff I’m John corales I used to play a long time ago now I cover the Celtics for Boston Sports

Journal I am here in New York City for the Boston Celtics win a 14-point win over the New York Knicks however they close Madison Square Garden it’s it’s so funny in in the city that never sleeps the one thing that closes at 1:30 in the morning is Madison Square Garden I work

Until all hours of the night in every other arena in the NBA but Madison Square Garden shuts down and I had to leave so I’m I’m podcasting from my hotel room here in New York city so just a weird little thing like it’s it’s quarter three in the morning as I record

This I can finish this post this and still go out to get a drink if I wanted I won’t but I could but I cannot podcast from Madison Square Garden it’s a weird little quirk in New York all right whatever the Celtics beat the Knicks 116

102 and uh look there a lot of different little elements to talk about but let me just start with my biggest overall big picture takeaway the thing that impressed me most about the Celtics win is how they did it in such different ways throughout the course of the game

Right like Jaylen Brown scores 20 they they start off the game on you know a lot of attacking the Rim Drive and kick and drive kick Swing Swing Swing uh ball movement generating good looks at three-pointers Drew holiday uh getting good looks in the corner and

Then they they you know they’ve got um Jaylen going pretty good so he he starts getting some isolation opportunities and he’s like outd dueling Jaylen Brunson and then in the in the third quarter it’s it’s just a three-point barrage they run a lot of pick and roll

Pick and pop and then they give up the lead and they get it back by posting up Al Horford and running running it through Al Horford in the post and so it’s just this variety of different ways that the Celtics can score that makes them I think one of the

Most dangerous teams in the league this isn’t just like they’re the best team in the league because they’ve got the most talent and you know we’ll we’ll see what happens in the playoffs I really do believe that this team has become one of the most dangerous teams in the league

Because if you’re playing the Celtics what do you do what do you take away how do you how do you defend the Celtics you want to Blitz Jason Tatum all right Tatum can sit there and say you know I’m just gonna kind of not take my take

Himself out of the game but he very clearly was willing to accept the double teams he only put up 19 points played 43 minutes and scored 19 points seven of 15 shooting so maybe if he had hit a couple more three-pointers or at least one more three-pointer yeah he would have had a

20-point game but he he was willing to do the other stuff and Chris THS poringa said after the game like because he’s willing to do that everybody’s willing to do that everybody kind of follows his lead but okay you want to take J Jason Tatum out of it

Sure no problem you want to take Jaylen Brown out of it all right well then we’ll go somewhere else so third you you have uh first half porzingis it looks like oh Chris THS is not playing well seven points two of six shooting just

Kind of seemed a little bit out of it he was watching offensive rebounds fall into the Knicks hands and then in the third quarter he just has you know he just has a perfect second half third quarter three of three from three nine points plus 11 he leads the Celtics with

15 points in the second half and whenever you deci you take something away they go somewhere else and like I said they they can take this and we’re going to attack the rim and spray it okay fine uh take that away we we’ll just run you know uh pick and pop and

We’ll we’ll just punish mismatches out in the perimeter we take that away okay we we’ll get ISO with some of our best players we’ll just find the mismatch and we’ll just tear that M that apart uh okay we got Al Horford coming off the bench and he knows how to post up we’ll

Just go to that it’s funny the Celtics come out and the first half not not so much like uh hunting their three-point shots they they took a few it was they were six of 14 in the first half that’s that’s nice but it’s only a 28 shot uh three-point

Shot Pace then in the third quarter it’s just murder from above nine of 13 from three and they they can just pour it on so quick this thing went from a tie game to a 20-point game in nine minutes it was just Relentless and if they get it

Going like that they’re impossible to beat so they put up a 35-point quarter they build up a 20-point lead the Knicks make a run because the Knicks played this game they were very very tough the Knicks made a run they they challenged the Celtics all night long this wasn’t

An easy an easy game yes the Knicks were missing an anobi they were missing uh Julius Randle they’re missing MIT Mitchell Robinson I really think this Knicks team could be the Boston’s biggest challenge in the East and part of it you saw why in this game obviously Jaylen Brunson is

Not just a really good player but a crafty player uh he’s capable of doing so much and with a fully healthy roster around him they’re they’re a very tough team but but even without that roster they’re still mentally they’re still tough they’ll still go out there and challenge you and they challenged the

Celtics they went on a 13-2 run after Boston built the lead up up to 20 they cut the thing to nine but Boston didn’t hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter so it’s not like they just hit a few threes and built the lead back up no

They had to work for it the three wasn’t falling so you switch up to a different style you go to Al Horford in the post Horford was huge in the fourth quarter didn’t really do a ton earlier in the game but man in that fourth quarter Al

Horford was there to just punish the uh buam bogdanovich over and over again right so there the Celtics realize oh they’re doubling the the post so go ahead let’s get it into Horford on bogdanovich do you have a move can you make a move okay sure are they sending a

Double team okay no problem pass out of that and we’ll just attack that from there and and take the advantage that they’re handing us there’s no answer there’s no answer for other teams defensively what do do you do how do you play the Cs are you

Going to play a drop coverage no problem are you going to switch no problem they’ve got answers across the board that’s why I don’t think this team is like people are worried about oh well last year they did blah blah blah this is not last year’s team this is not last

Year’s team last year’s team didn’t have these Styles they basically had one style this team can do anything heavy post-ups heavy drives heavy shooting whichever way you want to go and they usually have a good mix of it by the time the game is over it’s a uh it’s a

Relentless it’s a Relentless attack and that offense fuels their defense uh because especially when you’re when you’re making shots you get to get back and set your defense and that gets them opportunities to get more stops they didn’t rebound as well as I I I would liked but the that fourth quarter you

Know running things through Al was beautiful beautiful the whole thing uh not much to not like in this game there they gave up too many offensive rebounds so there’s always something that you can you can pick at and and that’s the other thing with this team they’re constantly

Picking at like okay this was great you got you you won this game you’re up you know you won it by 14 points that’s great but you know we did X Y and Z wrong and we got to figure that out uh against Philly on Tuesday

So I thought they they just kind of rolled with whatever whatever the Knicks tried to do they just hit hit New York with a counter punch uh Jaylen Brown was obviously awesome in this game uh especially early on 20 points in the first half he was hitting everything he

Just hitting tough tough tough shots he was what he came out of the All-Star break hot um porzingis didn’t but he woke up in the second half Tatum like I said was willing to do a lot of other stuff uh he played the entire second quarter he

Played the entire third quarter and he started the fourth quarter he he played all but a minute and nine seconds of the second half now with a couple days off he you know playing 43 minutes and change not a big deal I would not be

Shocked if he you know had a sore ankle quote unquote on Tuesday uh I know I know I know that he’s always he always wants to play but you know just if if the Celtics can convince him to take that day off you got two days off

Because he’s got two days off I doubt he’s going to play he I doubt he’s going to miss the game but that would be a nice little break for him right there another little break you know they got Sunday Monday off they play Tuesday Wednesday Thursday is off and then they

Play on Friday at Dallas so they’ve got they got a lot of opportunity here to uh get guys some rest so who knows who knows how they do this but you know in the podcast earlier last week I talked about finding the the opportunity to get appropriate

Rest having Tatum miss one game and still giving him another five days off would be like phenomenal um who however they want to do it I I think that that’s a great opportunity against a Sixers team obviously with no embiid now they’ll they’ll obviously be um it’s a TNT game

So I don’t know if there’s uh if it’s going to be an issue but still the Celtics have a lot of opportunities there to get guys rest um you know everybody everybody made a contribution in in this game holiday was great he had another couple more Corner three-pointers you cannot leave him open

In the corners but again working out of the post he had six assists TK White had six assists look Derek white um made a comment during the game no one works the Baseline quite like Derek white he’s one of the best in the NBA he finds himself

Along the Baseline a lot and that he he can relocate and and get himself into these open spots where he’s just able to sneak in and and get these layups I tell you what if Robert Williams had Derek White’s ability to work that Baseline he would have been a a a much

Better scorer um but regardless it’s that that’s an old old reference from last year where I I just don’t feel like Derek uh uh Robert Williams knew how to work the Baseline uh Al Horford’s really good at it but derck White’s amazing at that uh two straight games where he’s

He’s kind of scored a couple of baskets just relocating along the Baseline and and and laying it in he’s so smart he’s so good porzingis after the game was asked about Derek White he just started smiling he’s like he’s just so good he’s just so really he’s just really good man

Um so he had a another another great game for him uh just going down the box score Sam Hower hit a couple of shots um it was pton Pritchard uh another couple of offensive rebounds finding his way into offensive rebounds it’s like this Celtics team is

Is just so damn impressive that it’s it comes off as gushing but I’m just impressed I’m impressed with how well they play so uh a solid win here against the Knicks just a really good performance like I said their ability to switch in the middle of a how they play

Whatever the the the game demands the fact that they can do that so easily is amazing to me and they now have an eight-game lead with 25 games to play so their magic number to win the East is 18 um right now it’s uh WIS plus the

Cavs are in second place whoever the second place team is it’s 18 so right now it’s the Cavs so if the Cavs lose again then that comes off the magic number uh the Celtics are it’s still February and I’m talking about magic numbers and it’s starting to come down pretty fast

So the East is basically a foregone conclusion at this point eight games is going to be so difficult to make up because with 25 games left you need the Celtics to go uh what’s that uh they need to lose eight so they would have to win uh what that

17 17 and8 17 and eight the rest of the way where where are eight losses on this Celtic schedule and and beyond that if it’s if it’s Cleveland it’s not even eight because it’s that’s a tie and the Celtics on the tiebreaker so it’s really

They need to go 16 and nine the rest of the way seems pretty unlikely that the Celtics lose nine more games so the Celtics have a little bit of pad they can still lose six seven eight games and be in position to win the East uh the

Bigger magic number I’ll have to figure it out will be for the overall top seed in home court in the NBA Finals but even that they’re starting to they’re starting to separate themselves a little bit in that regard as well in fact let me uh just pull up the standings real

Quick because that’s important not like the Celtics can’t um can’t win on the road they they are very good on the road in fact Sean Grandy tweeted out uh a stat the other day I don’t have it in front of me it just popped into my head but the Celtics are

Like they have like 56 wins I believe in their last 82 games or somewhere in that range their last 82 games on the road they they have like a an amazing record just a just whatever 82 games if a team sign a team up for 55 56 wins wins out

Of 82 they’ll take it every every time and that’s just the Boston Celtics road record so they can win on the road if they have to so I’m not worried about that but the Celtics lead over Minnesota is five games so the Celtics you know Minnesota’s still winning a bunch of

Games so that’s not as for gone a conclusion but again can can the Celtics are the Celtics going to lose five more games and have Minnesota win enough to close that out it’s it’s gonna be very very difficult they’re what they’ve played 57 games so if Boston and they’ve split I don’t know

What the tiebreaker situation is there but they they’ve played 57 games they’ve both played 57 games so Boston would have to go let’s say if they lose five more so they would have to go uh what’s that I’m losing my train of thought uh so they’d have to if they

Lost five they would have to go 20 and five the rest of the way and Minnesota would have to go 25 and0 so that that’s that’s not going to happen so the Celtics are are pretty close to even wrapping up the best record in the league so that’s even G to happen I

Think soon Celtics Celtics are rolling man they are rolling and I appreciate I appreciate the the level at which they’re playing I I’ll just wrap it up by saying this nothing that the Celtics have shown me makes me worried about anything this postseason people are worried people are

Still not sure and oh last year this and last year that and these guys they improving it look this year’s team is different this year’s team is different this year’s team is different porzingis holiday white those guys make things different Horford Off the Bench makes things different it’s just a different team

So I think they’re right where they’re supposed to be I think they they still have things that they can improve Al Horford said it after the game he still thinks they can reach another level they’ve got a a point differential over 10 it’s one of the best point

Differentials of the past 50 years they they are any way you slice it the best team in the NBA and it’s not close they still can get better and the ways that they can beat you there’s there’s no stopping them if they stay fully healthy with this mentality the way

They’re playing I don’t think they’ll be stopped and I’m not jinxing anything that’s my opinion I think they are that good that’ll do it here for the lockdown Celtics bonus podcast a weird another weird thing if you’re still listening Monday’s podcast is the audio podcast is g to come out late

That comment section let me know what you think become an every dayer and share the podcast spread the word tell everybody they should be listening to and watching the lockdown Celtics podcast right here in the lockdown podcast Network it’s your team every day

  1. If you're good enough defensively to shut down both Tatum and Brown the Celtics have White and KP in PnR with Holiday or Horford in the corner. Good luck.

  2. Hey John, great recap and breakdown as always! This was one of the best games I've seen them play in a very long time. 🍀🏀💪🏳18

  3. Knowing his personality, KP probably had a very fun All-Star break. I say play him to get him focused. But I agree he needs rest.

  4. Last year's team was struggling around this time. This team is versatile and in sync. Reminds me of the ‘08 championship team.

  5. KP is opossite of Shacquile O'Neal. Shack was imposing his game by force. Kristaps is a counter attacker. He will take whatever opposing teams give him.

  6. No one is beating this team in a 7 game series. As long as they stay healthy and execute of course. And I know they can be even better as Al Horford said in his postgame comments. It’s all mental for these guys come playoff time and adding players like Holiday who know what it takes to win a title is huge in my opinion. I guess we’ll find out soon enough…thanks John! ☘️🔒

  7. I was pretty impressed last night myself we could have made a little more free throws we still have to work on that the turnover era I hope it's over will all the negativity from ESPN and TNT always putting them down maybe it's making them stronger I hope go Beantown Banner 18 let's get it done😊 by the way holiday is doing pretty good he's coming on I think❤

  8. If the Celtics play the type of defense they are capable of playing and they play smart and unselfish offensively, they will win the title.

  9. That magic number of 18 only applies if the cavs stay second. If the bucks take the 2 seed you may need to add 1 to the magic number bc our tiebreaker game vs bucks hasn't happened

That said, its over. Noone is catching us 😈

  10. Haven’t felt this confident in the C’s they traded for KG in 08. Inside/ouside. Defend at a high level. Everybody can shoot. This team is as close to flawless as you can get. Can’t wait til the playoffs.

  11. It was indeed one of the better confidence building games for fans showing versatility of the Cs in adapting to whatever is thrown at them. And the defense was superb.Loved your recap Mr.Karalis. More than anything I agree with trying to rest KP wherever we can. His health can make or break us reaching the top of the mountain. I would hate another moment like the way last season ended with Jason Tatum getting hurt. Not that I would lose confidence but it would surely become a grind.

  12. Holiday shooting almost 70% from the corner is incredible 4th or 5th option. What a nightmare to defend for other teams.

  13. Wow, the obvious and infamous Tatum push off is in the thumbnail. It's so bad you people have been conditioned into thinking it's not illegal contact. 😂😂

  14. Karalis has this magical ability to watch Jaylen Brown cook the fuck out of the Knicks yet still find ways to talk more about how GENIUS Jayson Tatum is for chucking iso threes & almost blowing the game. it’s incredible. this was a Jaylen game & bald Seth Rogen here will “gush” about Derrick White on the baseline 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ this show would be decent without the groupie mentality. be serious Karalis.

  15. It's really hilarious watching the national media try to find things to nitpick with this team…..

  16. The Knicks fans were booing Porzingis on opening night very disrespectful. We fast-forward to now he’s wearing green, and every time we have played against them Porzingis just does well and it’s payback for when they were booing him, but as they always say, what goes around comes around. So now I wonder will the Knicks make it in the playoffs because they’re still struggling with injuries.

  17. So John I heard last night the commentator JJ Reddick say the same thing you said about Joe Mazzulla being comfortable in the uncomfortable.

  18. As a new yorker, new york has some ridiculous laws lol the curfew one for concerts/sporting events might be the most ridiculous one

  19. NY is a respectable #4 seed in the east, yet the C's have swept them in 4 games 😤 Any C's fan who bashes this team needs to move to Detroit and root for the Pistons 😂🍀

  20. To be honest a healthy Knicks team scares me the most out of the eastern conference. March up wise there super physical and can rebound really well. Allowing Oreb is a problem we need to work on. And this Knicks team can take advantage of that.

  21. Ugh, the amount of "because he's small" fouls that Jalen Brunson was drawing was infuriating. Fouls should be called on the action of the aggressor, not the reaction of the aggrieved.

  22. John, not gonna lie, for a hot second as you came on, I thought you were doing this in a hotel robe 😂😂

  23. It was great seeing Boston not rush on offense last night. They probably took five bad shot the entire game and when the Knicks made their run, they would pull away.

  24. Hey John DJJCHURCHILL here love the podcast from day one. You give some good opinions on game play. You guys should use a celtics green screen as your background.
