Recap: Pelicans team up with BMike x Eternal Seeds to create mural for Smoothie King Center
So Eternal seed is a nonprofit that we started some years back as a way to formalize all the work we’ve been doing for a long time investing in uplifting young and emerging artists in the City of New Orleans for us it’s an opportunity to make sure that we invest
In the soil so that more of that can continue to grow and we do that through various programs including projects like this partnership with the Pelicans a collaboration between the young and emerging artists that we work with and the Pelicans players a piece of art that showcases what black history want me to
Us I think a lot about the things that artists and athletes have in common it’s this idea of human potential when I see the Pelicans performing it’s a reminder of human potential seeing them be great reminds you that you’re able to be great and I think the same thing happens when
I’m painting or when people watching me create a mural you can do more with your time here than the things that you may have thought was your limitations so we wrapped up the session with the players taking in account of all the things that’s happened with the design looks
Like so far and then looking at the design that the players picked the way that sketch is it’s like a bunch of people lifting up this kid to like help that kid dunk the ball now we’re sort of breaking that sketch into how each student could add their own voice to it
The black national anthem says Lift Every Voice not lift every Echo and so for them to understand that their voice is important that they have a story that’s so profound and so beautiful and so needed and their art is a medium to allow that to be heard and to be seen
That’s my message to all of them the goal of an artist is to imagine alternatives to the present in a world where we’re constantly battling and debating all the things that we want to change all the things that we want to make better is going to require a radical
Imagination to do so and so the role of an artist is more important than I think it’s ever been it allows us to see beyond this present moment to make a world that benefits all of us in the way that we want it to be that’s the story
Of Black History Month that’s the story of New Orleans and so that’s what we’re celebrating with this project we just installed this mural and title I am because we are we’re going to be auctioning off the proceeds are going to go back to Eternal seeds Larry n Jr
Zero hunger Challenge and CJ mccullum’s many great initiatives throughout the City of New Orleans I just I remember putting on the foundation of it and we were all bouncing the balls on it I don’t think I’ve painted since like Elementary School cool to see what they
Did on top of that I like the turn out a lot it’s nice just sketching right now putting together some ideas see the vision I see the vision I like it I like it I know I can see my power right there though I think that’s mine no it’s it’s
Like freestyl it’s it’s in the eyes of the holder you know try to be Mike though that’s awesome well done this is cool I’ve done little bubble letters on with a pencil but never with paint this is way cooler than uh than I had in mind
The greatest joy I have as an artist is the stories that each painting goes through to get to the conclusion to be able to work with all these young people that I love this partnership with the Pelicans all these different voices that creates this choir I’m super excited
About the song that we can do together
The New Orleans Pelicans teamed up with BMike and Eternal Seeds to create a mural that sits in the tunnel at the Smoothie King Center outside of the team locker room.
