New Orleans Pelicans have to blame themselves in bad loss to the Chicago Bulls | Ingram returns

New Orleans Pelicans have to blame themselves in bad loss to the Chicago Bulls | Ingram returns

There was one specific thing that caused the New Orleans Pelicans to lose to the Chicago Bulls I’ll break it down and we’ll see if they can fix it going forward plus we have all the Fallout from the fight against the Miami Heat it’s locked on Pelicans let’s

Go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans in NBA part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day

Available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison no Jake on Twitter here with youall on this Monday kicking off tipping off a week’s worth of podcast here we got a lot to talk

About after the weekend the had a fight against Miami Heat we’ll cover that in the third segment of today’s show and then a bad loss and it was a bad loss to the Chicago blls that we really got to break down because there’s two areas I

Think where you could look at that they really struggled with one in particular and we’re going to lead with that and that was the turnovers and of course thank you for making lockdown Pelicans your first listen today and every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking

Down everything you want to know about this team subscribe wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube tell a friend about the show be coming every day or listen Monday through Friday there’s like on YouTube alone like 10,000 of y’all basically at this point today’s episode of Locked on

Pelicans is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks if your bet wins visit fanduel.com lockon to get started okay we’re going to get started by looking at their loss to the

Chicago Bulls this one was 11416 the Pelicans lose to the the Bulls after they had and tell me if you’ve heard this before right a double digit lead in the third quarter that then got whittel away and thre some just very poor play particularly in the fourth New Orleans

Completely gave this one up they gave this game away right we like to joke about how Willie Green wants to give credit to the other team and to be fair Chicago did a couple of things and came in with a very good game plan but New Orleans threw this one away like

Literally just threw it away right because the reason they lost this game is 19 turnovers that’s an atrocious number here 19 turnovers they couldn’t execute down the stretch they couldn’t really execute nearly as well in the second half and that was after Brandon Ingram looked amazing amazing in the

First half of this game 18 points in the first half playing aggressive basketball driving to the hoop scoring that way shooting threes exactly what you want to see from him and it looked like New Orleans who had built some momentum going into into halftime with a three-point lead after kind of a

Struggle I guess particularly in the first quarter with all their turnovers look to have some momentum and then that just completely ground to a halt and you can make excuses for this right you know they didn’t have CJ McCollum was out injured Jose Alvarado suspended for three games that’s two of their like

Lead guards essentially right but those guys aren’t truly lead guards they don’t like play point guard for New Orleans right they’re more partial ball handlers so not having CJ isn’t the reason why they had 19 turnovers not having Jose isn’t the reason why they had 19 turnovers this was them just being

Sloppy and like the vibe in this game was off like from the get-go for the New Orleans Pelicans to to be honest with you you could kind of see it in the beginning right like they were even doing things like running into each other like they were just out of sorts

In this and it was weird and you could see it in the play on the court some of this is maybe they you know were running lineups that we’ve never really seen the starting lineup I don’t think had logged a single minute together you know before

This game but at the same point like that doesn’t excuse you know a lot of these turnovers which are like the unforced air variety right like it’s not like the Bulls were forcing you into this stuff it was basically just the Pelicans playing poorly 19 turnovers for

New Orleans right 17 fast break points for Chicago from that 20 points off those turnovers for Chicago if you cut those turnovers down you win this game it’s really that simple and this is why when we talk about offense and wanting Shooters and things like that out there

On the court and you’ve heard me say this a lot right you know the normal saying is like good defense leads to easy offense that’s completely true but your offense also does impact your defense as well and so when you’re turning the ball over your defense can’t

Get back get set can’t do anything and New Orleans was doing a good job of poking the ball free generating turnovers but then the defense just couldn’t do it anymore cuz they were defending in transition in fast break off opportunities and he gave that easy offense there so if New Orleans had

Better offense the defense looks better here and Chicago probably doesn’t get to4 points you know even if off those 19 turnovers right those are empty possessions for the Pelicans let’s let’s be conservative and give them 10 points like eliminate that number for a second 10 more points right that’s 116 they win

The game and Chicago’s points go down if they had only had 10 fast break points whatever the number might be you could win this game by 20 it feels like and New Orleans just didn’t do that poor execution guys just I don’t know like the vibe was just wrong with this one

You saw Willie Green struggling I think should he CH challenge a call or two definitely seemed like it right like that wasn’t great either in this game you know bran Ingram having six turnovers in the second half you know he had three in the first half six in the

Second half to go with Just Four Points that’s not great I love L that he took 63s though he was aggressive driving and kind of got away from that a little bit and then relied a little bit too much on the mid-range right like in the second

Half he mixed two that were tough contested shots late in the game when could they have worked around to generate a better shot not necessarily cuz they were kind of off but New Orleans was firing away from three doing all of the right things and it’s just the turnovers that absolutely killed

Them killed them in this game right nine for braining three for Zion Williams and no one else in the starting lineup had a turnover which is great but Larry Dan Jr had four we’ll talk more about the big man stuff coming up in the next segment

Here you know they just gave this game away right like just cannot seem to figure things out in pressure-filled situations here and it’s another clutch loss for New Orleans another game where they struggled in clutch situations you know this is why I said I think there’s a ceiling on this team I

Don’t view them as a true title Contender I don’t view them as a team that’s necessarily going to make a ton of noise in the postseason they should still get there but like this was a game you had to win right and like you just couldn’t get it done down the stretch

And that’s super disappointing and a lot of things added to it don’t get me wrong it’s not just the turnovers but the turnovers were like the real big culprit here and they need to find a way to kind of get on the same page again that clunky offense

Leading to their defense being terrible new orans scored 106 points in this one their average on the season going into this game this is below it right and let me find where the points per game which is not the best way to look at it is 112

So six points less than that the same thing same problem against the Miami Heat as well this team I think is going to be a fine regular season team I don’t see them being a great postseason team if this is how they’re going to play because look the Chicago Bulls who were

Down guys too right there’s no Zack LaVine there for for them you know there’s no reason why you should lose this game there’s no reason why and it was just self-inflicted mistakes with the turnovers right with some of the the bad lineups I think we saw out that

There were out there that were not great you know questionable coaching decisions in this one I think Willie Green gets a little too much flak but this game was pretty bad I think from my perspective with him one of the the issues was how he plays his big men here let’s talk

About that coming up here next in in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m excited to tell you about grammarly because no matter what kind of work you do how you communicate is key whether it’s emails reports presentations all of that is important to the collaboration needed to

Every day we are here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know about this team looking at the loss to the Chicago Bulls let me know what you think in the comments Down Below on YouTube or turnovers the main reason was

It something else let me know what you think be also becomeing every day listen Monday through Friday to lock on Pelicans or if you listen one day a week listen two days a week and tell a friend about the show it’s still going to be a

Fun into the season here for the New Orleans Pelicans but that was a bad loss to a not good Chicago Bulls team and New Orleans really wishes they could have that one back because that those are games that you’ve just got to win the loss the Miami Heat which we’ll get to

More in the next segment is like fine whatever right like you you can kind of live with that but to the Chicago Bulls in a game where you know Trey Murphy gets it going a little bit more made three threes right herb Jones in this one was four of six

From three that’s great you had Matt ryano four of nine Jordan Hawkins two of five right these are all really good performances good numbers and you kind of wasted it because you just shot yourself in the foot over and over and over again just incredibly disappointing

From the Pelicans and it’s a reason why you know you see them struggle at times they do this to themselves they’re still like just not all there despite sometimes big wins like over you know the Houston Rockets and other teams one of the things that I think added to this

And it was also against the Miami Heat too and this is you know something we’re going to be looking at a lot this offseason is the center position for New Orleans they seem to really struggle trying to kind of figure out what to do here and this comes down to coaching and

Knowing your team and kind of having a read on everything and you’ve seen them you know they look they wanted to make a move at the deadline for a different Center but all the centers they wanted to get that were good just weren’t going to be available right no Jared Allen was

Available Miles Turner wasn’t available any of those guys just not available for New Orleans going for a guy like Daniel Gafford or others like I don’t think he’s actually an upgrade over someone like yonas valent chunis right and they actually closed with yonas valent chunis in this one which is a little bit

Different for them but I liked this decision when you look at the individual plus minus here Jonas with the starters was the best at plus 19 he was doing a very good job 14 points 17 rebounds including seven offensive boards 0 for three from Deep which whatever but he

Had a very good impactful game here but for a while they ran just too many Larry an Jr minutes and he was not making that sort of impact right four turnovers in this game for him compared to just two points he was a minus 24 in his minutes

Out there like those minutes with some of those bench lineups and again part of this is out of necessity no CJ no Nagi no Jose Alvarado that was n great though and they needed to probably not play him 19 minutes right like Jonas zunis played

Under 30 if there was ever a game where you just needed to kind of ride him a little bit it was probably this one and New Orleans didn’t do it you know in the game against Miami Heat too they kind of struggled playing Larry Dan Jr out there

More than he should they tried to close small with him and then there was a a possession I think late in the fourth where they gave up three offensive rebounds to the Miami Heat and then right after that you saw Willie Green sub out Trey Murphy for Jeremiah

Robinson Earl and have to close with Jeremiah Robinson Earl who was on a two-way deal right like cut earlier in the season added you know by the my by the Thunder added to the Pelicans on a two-way deal and then just recently converted to a full-time roster spot I

Actually like him as an end of bench guy I like him I like think he’s a smart guy I think he’s got a high IQ I think he fights for rebounds he’s got good Mobility to defend he probably doesn’t need to be closing games for this team

All of that said right like that’s kind of a problem an issue there I think that’s not ideal so but they had to kind of out of necessity or or could you have closed with Jonas valent chunis now bam at a bio is you know excellent and you

Know was blocking shots was he had three blocks in that game you know in that game Jonas Don chunis kind of struggled a little bit as well and you know Larry Nance Jr also struggled so like what what do we do in here to not just go

With your biggest guy like I want to give Wiig credit for closing with Jonas V chunis for realizing that you know Larry Nance Jr wasn’t getting it done in this game with the Chicago Bulls but also if you had had him in could things have been different against the Miami

Heat you know if he was simply just a big body out there to go deal with bam at a bile I’m I’m not saying for sure or not sure but you get what I’m kind of hinting at here they they’re not managing this well it’s ultim why they

Want to make a move and why they want to go in a different direction and I think you know they’re going to right like they’re absolutely going to change the center position up sometime this off season it’s the right thing to do I think you do that before you really

Start to maybe break up Zion Williamson and brain and Ingram I would keep those guys i’ would bring in a different Center and see if that really kind of changes your fortunes but you also need a coach to kind of like manage your guys more effectively here and I don’t think

Willie Green is doing that in this one right like this you know some of those Larry minutes against the Chicago Bulls really what cost this team again it’s the turnovers more than that but he was a culprit with that too they need to kind of just

Figure this out and I don’t know if they really know what to do against Miami Heat right like to go if you’re going to go small you got to rebound or you got to score it’s usually if you go small it’s you’re going to try and get it down

On the offensive side of the ball but if that’s not happening then you you can’t go small right you’re not rebounding you’re not scoring it’s not giving you the defense that you want you’ve got to go a different direction and they didn’t do that and so you can kind of point to

Some of the coaching decisions here as reasons why they found themselves in the position that they were in basically two losses right like I get that it’s three games in four nights and this was particularly tough coming out of the All-Star break with a back toback but

You had three home games you had three home games right like that’s exactly what you kind of need to build some momentum here New Orleans just can’t seem to get over the hump like metaphorically and like in in any situation here right they don’t have a five-game winning streak yet this season

They have a couple of four game winning streaks but they can’t then do it you know against the Chicago Bulls team they just couldn’t get over it late in the game to try and close this one out you know they would get stops you had Zion with an amazing defense of block right

You had Brandon Ingram playing some of I thought the best defense that he’s played this year like he was incredible in the first half and it’s all wasted it’s all wasted because of some of these just little things that I don’t feel need to be happening for the Pelicans at

This point in time right like that there’s still more questions than answers around this team and with 24 games left to go that’s not a really good position to be in now they’re going to go on I think they’re going to go on another little winning streak you get a

Bunch of Eastern Conference teams straight things like that are really going to help but you have tough games coming up right the Knicks is tough two against the Pacers is going to be really tough because they are great with with Tyrese halberton you know CJ sounds like

He should be back sooner rather than later he was listed as day today you know I think it’s impressive that Zion played in all three of these games despite being questionable in two of them three of them that I think says something too like he’s starting to get

Into kind of better form you know he had a good job assisting the ball 11 here but you’re also seeing you know teams wall him off which is what they do so they need these guys shooting threes they did that right you were 16 of 41 39% that’s exactly

What you’re supposed to do here and how you win this and they couldn’t they just couldn’t get it done it’s super disappointing and they’re doing it to themselves Willie Green wants to give the opponent credit that’s great that’s fine the Chicago Bulls put a lot of pressure on brandan Ingram particularly

In the second half I think knowing that he was going to be handling the ball a lot and trying to kind of force him into mistakes and that happened but also that doesn’t account for all 19 of the turnovers here right like that’s a part of the problem that doesn’t account for

The bad Larry n junor minutes these are all self-inflicted things that New Orleans needs to figure out and they have not done so how does that bode well or kind of in any capacity for the postseason and I think that’s the type of stuff that concerns me and we’ll see

Now though you’re playing Eastern Conference teams you’ve got tough Eastern Conference teams coming up we’re going to see how that goes all right let’s talk a little bit about the fight from Friday against the Miami Heat which by the way loved it loved it that was awesome let’s break that down coming up

Available on the free Fire TV channels app okay we are looking at the loss to the Miami Heat here 9516 not even breaking 100 points the the story of this one obviously though was the the the fight that broke out late in the fourth quarter here and we’ll probably

Do a show more on this tomorrow with the whistle that Zion gets I think that’s going to be really important to look at and talk about we’ll break that down for you coming up in tomorrow’s episode of Locked on Pelicans but that’s what led to this fight right this fight broke out

Between players but it started and happened because of the referees in the NBA I have long said this I will stand by this I say it unlocked on NBA all the time the NBA has an officiating problem I think this is one of the bigger things

Kind of they they need to deal with right refs shouldn’t keep being the stories of games but they often times are and that is a bad thing you want the best product out there and they’re not doing that with referees that are inconsistent or just I don’t know bad at

Their job it feels like when it comes to things here and so when Kevin Love really wrapped up Zion Williamson on you know what you should call an intentional foul now I don’t think he tried to throw him down Zion said after the game like he tried to kind of break his fall

That’s kind of what I thought from there too but it feels like the the refs need to take more action on things like that and they didn’t hear and that just led to tempers kind of boiling over right Naji Marshall runs in starts choking somebody you know that leads to then

Kind of everyone getting together and then what is Thomas Bryant doing in this fight for the Miami Heat going at Jose Alvarado I love the fight from this team you don’t see that enough I think from them and of course the two guys that were ejected nii and Jose probably have

The most fight in them out of all of the guys out there on the court right n’s nickname is the knife for a reason Jose is never going to back down from any sort of thing and both those guys have every player’s back particularly Zion right like loved what we saw from them

The fight was just kind of like fun I like seeing that I like when these teams don’t particularly like each other and really want to go at one another right you kind of even saw in the win over the Houston Rockets that new orans just doesn’t seem to like guys probably Dylan

Brooks and others on that Rockets team and really kind of wanted to you know make a point of it I like that I think that makes the game more interesting more fun I don’t want to see anyone hurt obviously and no one got hurt in this

Game so I kind of liked it right we’ve got the Fallout from it here Jimmy Butler and Naji Marshall are suspended for one game each Thomas Bryant and Jose Alvarado are suspended for three games each that’s likely going to be because they kind of ended up fighting and

Getting into it after everything had kind of been come down here but it was disappointing to see that with the Miami Heat getting Jimmy Butler from that game right like if you look at the players that were being kicked out Na and Jose versus Jimmy Butler and Thomas Bryant

Like that ends up being I think a net Advantage for the New Orleans Pelicans couldn’t take advantage of it unfortunately even though they kept that game close it’s disappointing I know so we won’t see Jose for two more games so there you know if CJ is out for a little

Bit longer he rolled his ankle in this one you know could be a little bit tougher hopefully the the turnovers kind of get fixed a little bit here but for New Orleans to stay in that game against the Miami Heat and do what they did I do

Like what we saw they were down 19 in the first half and really fought back in the third or sorry in the at the end of the first quarter and the start of the third quarter to make that a tie game going in at halftime this one looked

Over and then they came back out and really played well and fought hard you know after the ejections they kept it close when this is a team they don’t match up particularly well with as long as bam had a bio is playing so I liked

The fight I thought they did a lot of things right you know in years past they would have gotten blown out in this game and they didn’t the final score is 11 points but it truly was closer than that especially down the stretch you know hopefully these home

Games are kind of like a wakeup for them right a real disappointing loss to the Chicago Bulls that should sting you know kind of I don’t want to say getting like punked or anything like that from the Miami Heat but getting in that fight then losing that game’s got to kind of

Bruise the ego as well on things so uh I I really hope that they start to wake up and kind of really dial some things in it’s tough to make adjustments in three games in four nights don’t get me wrong but that was a really disappointing two

Games for the Pelicans the Miami Heat one wasn’t that disappointing the disappointing one was the loss to the Chicago Bulls that’s a bad loss like there’s no getting around that and there are things they need to do to clean up and figure out if they want to get back

To winning ways here which they hopefully will do and are very much capable of doing so that’s going to do it for this episode of lockdown pelons tomorrow let’s look at Zion and the foul calls to the referees I want to get into more of that because I do think that’s

Really important here is there anything New Orleans can do we’ll break that all down coming up in tomorrow’s episode of Locked on Pelicans that’s it as always I’m your host Jake Madison at Nola Jake on Twitter we’ll be back with yall tomorrow

The New Orleans Pelicans got Brandon Ingram back on the court but it wasn’t enough to get the win over the Chicago Bulls. Jake Madison breaks down how turnovers killed the Pels and stopped them from getting a needed win. Plus, we have all the fallout from the fight against the Miami Heat as Jose Alvarado and Naji Marshall are suspended. And does Zion Williamson get a bad whistle from the refs?

  1. This team looks incredible one week and awful the next. Everyone from players to coaches have got to find a way to bring some consistency week to week. Is there anything that can be pinpointed as to why the pels struggle with this?

  2. Unfortunate, I think it’s obvious this team is unable to handle pressure situations. I don’t think coaching grasps how to adjust when the opposing team adjusts. The players also appear to lack the mental fortitude to counterpunch the opposing team. At this point in the season, I’m doubting they’ll truly figure out these 2 problems since they’ve really struggled all season long. I think we’re a first round playoff team, but probably nothing beyond it.

  3. No CJ McCollum No Win I hope everybody understands how important CJ McCollum is to this team

  4. Soft ass team comes from a soft ass coach. WILLIE GREEN TAKE A FUCKING TECHNICAL FOR ZION MAKE A STATEMENT!!! willie non swearing ass… fucking fight

  5. Coaching cost us. We had no move off ball movement and our defense for the second game in a row is non existing. Fire Willie Green. Once hes gone we will have a better record ive seen enough.

  6. When we’re faced with physicality late in games, we seem to wilt under the pressure. Teams see that and capitalize time and again. We’re soft.

  7. POINT GUARD!!! POINT GUARD!!!! POINT GUARD!!!

This Point Zion foolishness is a gimmick that may work against cellar dwellers (sometimes) but will never be effective against the elites. (Please don't think that this is an endorsement of BI or CJ; it isn't).

When Williamson has the ball 25 feet away from the rim…

    1. Nobody is particularly afraid of him; he can't hurt you.
    2. The ball stops moving which makes playing defense easy (there are ten eyes on one man)
    3. So, teams pack the paint for his patented locomotive move (usually to his left).
    4. When he's stopped it's usually a desperation pass with milliseconds left on the shot clock for a hope and a prayer.
    5. And, he's inevitably the last person back on defense.

Why have we shelved the Borrego Offense? The ball movement earlier in the year was exceptional. Before we went all out Point Zion we were a Top Ten Offense. Where did that go?

A real honest to goodness point guard will take the pressure of Williamson (at least one set of eyes will be otherwise occupied). We don't necessarily need points out of the PG position (although I will argue that almost any competent point guard is more of scoring threat from 25 feet than what we currently are experiencing); we only need our PG to be a table setter so, Zion and our other offensive threats can feast.

I get it…I really do. Everybody read all the press clippings claiming that Williamson was a transformative talent who would revolutionize the game. We're five years in and those press clippings are fading, and fading fast.

Lastly, despite a plethora of offensive talent in the our starting unit, it is among the least effective in the entire league. What does it lack?

    A…………..

POINT GUARD!!! POINT GUARD!!! POINT GUARD!!!

    —-

    Other observations:

Despite his rebounds tonight, 3M3 is almost unplayable.

LNJ should never see the floor again this year.

  8. This game was tough to watch. I kinda felt it was going to slip but kept on fighting nyself that the Pels will find a way to a win.

    It never happened..😅

  9. This team really needs a closer! I don’t believe Zion can be a trusted closer as long as he relies solely only bullying his way to his left

  10. The problem is Griff not making any trade and the whole roster construction doesn’t make sense. This roster is bad and the coach worst. When Val sit to the bench (which is where he should belong) we only have to play Nance which is not a center (ain’t even e good PF though)

  11. Keep doing maths on the calls we ain’t getting. That’s why we gonna stay a loosing team with no respect from other teams in the league. Let’s keep not looking on the bad job griff has been doing for 5y. There are too many coaches that are out smarting WG and too many teams can destroy us in a cluch time.
It was pathetic seeing Nance shooting a three from the corner in the fourth quarter and Val couldn't hold the ball when trying rebounding or trying catching a loosing ball.

  12. Tiny hopes to win a title is keep zion happy and within a year get some decent return by trading (or not signing) : Nance, Valanciunas, Trey, DD(after he back from injury) CJ.
