Golden State Warriors tonight in Toronto as they continue their homestand very Western Conference heavy stretch of schedule here for the Raptors some fun tests and this game in particular I’ve had my eye on for a lot of reasons you know the Warriors are always fun when they’re in town Steph Curry Steph Curry

He’s still amazing to watch and they’ve been playing very well of late but I do think since the Raptors reshaped their team around the trade deadline brought in Kelly o linck brought in oay abaji established this nine-man rotation they’ve been going with and have really begun to sort of indoctrinate themselves

In the school of Darko or yakovich I I think it’s a really interesting matchup to watch tonight because the Warriors do a lot of the stuff that it seems like the Raptors want to do themselves and I do think in some ways and not always we’ll talk about that coming up today

The ways these teams are kind of similar and different in the way they play the overall potency of the way they play etc etc but in some ways this is kind of like the Spider-Man meme that we all know but it’s like Spider-Man one Peter Parker’s homemade costume up against

Like the Iron Man version of Spider-Man in the like the dumb Marvel Cinematic Universe movies uh with Tom Holland it’s like those suits pointing at each other they’re different one is far more advanced than the other but the core principles are pretty much there still the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man one

Way or another and I do think that the Raptors and the Warriors they do share a lot in terms of just like little bits of DNA and I think it’s pretty clear that the Raptors are trying to shape this thing with plenty of Warriors influence

A and I kind of want to spend today digging into that digging into the ways in which they’re similar the ways in which this roster now actually kind of is conducive to playing this way the way the Warriors have played for the last 10 years the way they’ve played on their

Way to being the most successful franchise since since the Chicago Bulls of the Jordan era uh it’s been a remarkable run and I gotta caveat all this that I’m going to say today by saying the Raptors are not going to be the Warriors I would put all of my money

Down on the Toronto Raptors not making six NBA Finals in the next 10 years they are not going to win four NBA championships in the next year next 10 years because teams just don’t do that and they do not notably have a Steph Curry on their team who is one of the

Seven best players of all time and the greatest shooter who ever lived that is not something the Raptors are working with but that doesn’t mean that they can’t try to replicate some of the stuff that’s made the Warriors into the most successful franchise in the NBA over the

Last 10 years or so obviously I think this all starts oh this I should say this whole germ of an idea begins from the lock on Raptor Discord our pal sual in there a few days ago just kind of noted it kind of seems like maybe they’re trying to do something here

Quickly dick Barnes are they trying to replicate some version of Steph clay Draymond and I’ve been thinking about it a lot and watching the Raptors over the last few days here it’s pretty clear that there are lots of lines to draw between especially the early era Warriors like 20145 the first year of

Steve Kerr when he came in totally transformed their offense from the sort of sludge that Mark Jackson seemed to really want to lean on turned it into this beautiful movement offense tons of flex action and cutting an off ball movement uh you know using Draymond Green as a centerof the floor hub for

Creation to free up Steph Curry and Klay Thompson to make like Hellfire Reign upon the opposing teams that there’s a lot in terms of what the Raptors are doing now that is similar to that and I think again going back to the quickly Grady dick Scotty Barnes comparison

Those are like pretty easy lines to draw right Steph Curry the pull-up shooting wizard Emanuel quickley one of the best above the break three-point shooters in the NBA right now has become a nice relocation shooter as well he’s not Steph Curry he’s never going to be Steph

Curry we have to just get that set out loud here but that is the type of player that allows you to play this kind of offense that exploits space and stretches out defenses I think it was a pretty good example of what quickly does for this team on Monday against the

Pacers where in that game you know how many times have we watched the Raptors over the last couple years where all of the action is concentrated like free throw line and in it’s just post-ups it’s lots of bodies it’s interior passing and there’s just not a lot of

Space to be worked with in that Pacers game as Emanuel quickley is kind of tapping into his more aggressive side which the last four games or so he’s been absolutely brilliant at doing you know you had the Pacers the real battleground of that game on defense for

The Pacers was free throw line to the half court line they were pressing up high they were trying to force the ball to Quickly’s hands when they could and the defense was really doing its work in that sort of quadrant of the floor that’s between the free throw line and

The half court line and that opened up all kinds of space for the Raptors they absolutely murdered the Pacers at The Rim in this game in that game precisely because of all the stuff that was going on further away from the basket that flowed and funneled stuff towards the

Rim and so quickly allows you to play that kind of offense obviously Scotty Barnes is the Draymond Green stand in here and he’s a different player than Draymond Green Draymond is one of the best defensive players we’ve ever seen of course Scotty Barnes not that yet although lots of very encouraging signs

For him on that end of the floor and he’s clearly a more advanced offensive player even right now than Draymond Green ever has been or will be and so that’s going to tilt things we’ll get into that a little bit later on too and then Grady dick obviously he’s the sort

Of fresh face he’s the guy that you know hopefully you can turn into a Klay Thompson type again difference is there too and we’ll talk about how defense in particular is going to be a massive difference at least right now as this Raptor team is built compared to what

Those Warriors teams were capable of and obviously Grady dick not being Klay Thompson on the defensive end you know Scotty Barnes not being Draymond Green Andre Iguodala not being on this Raptor team you know all of that is going to play into the differences we’ll see as

Well but you know if you just sort of think about the lineage of darkar rakovich and the the school of thought that he comes from as a coach you know a lot of similarities to Steve Kerr right Steve Kerr is a Greg papovich Accolade obviously he has some Phil Jackson

Triangle stuff worked in there as well you know featuring bigs heavily off ball cutting stuff like that um but obviously Steve Kerr a huge part of the Greg papovich coaching tree and basically like a like half the league is at this point and you can kind of Trace darkar

Rakovich through a bunch of these guys right he coached with Taylor Jenkins for a long time in Memphis teror Jenkins is a Mike buen holer disciple who is of course an original Greg papovich guy um you know Darko comes from the European game right and I think there are so many

European influences that you see in the way the Spurs have played you know think back to that 20134 Spurs team maybe the most beautiful basketball we’ve ever seen played it’s all European like influenced there and so I I think because of where Darko comes from because of the skill sets they have on

The roster now it would make a ton of sense if they tried to replicate what the Warriors have done particularly on offense again defense is going to be a whole other story we’ll talk about that but I do think the way these teams line up skill set wise on the offensive end

Not overall talent but just skill sets in the bag I’m fascinated to see tonight just as like a watching experience of sort of comparing what the Warriors do with what the Raptors do and you know it’s going to be a real example of what the Raptors are trying to get to right

This is kind of the the part of the Season they’re in they’re figuring things out they’re trying to see what they are and where they need to get the Warriors should be a pretty telling case of where they need to get and I’m really looking forward to watching that play

Out tonight in Toronto we will come back on the other side we’re going to get into some of the comparisons and the very similar styles of play between these two teams in particular we’re going to get into um you know just sort of like some numbers from the tracking

Data from nba.com of how these teams approach playing basketball and how it’s very very similar right now we’ll get into that coming up in just one sec Today’s Show is brought to you by your friends over at FanDuel right now you can get buckets with your first bet

Much more you can make Futures bets obviously the baseball season’s coming up maybe you want to put some money down on some teams to go win the World Series you can always do that as well all you got to do is visit fanduel.com lockon and shoot your shot FanDuel is the

Official Sportsbook partner of the NBA and of course the locked on podcast Network all right back to it here on uh your Friday episode of lock on Raptors again Raptors Warriors tonight uh by the way you can check out Raptors broadcasts on SiriusXM our Pal’s over there uh just

Search Raptors and the Raptors of course tonight 7:30 against the Warriors you can go listen to that game on Sirius XM if you are a Serius XM user all right um stylistic similarities the Raptors and warriors again very different teams very different Talent output and I’m more so

Comparing the Raptors of today to the sort of early stage Warriors the Harrison Barnes Warriors the 20145 come out of nowhere Steph wins MVP and they go win the championship Warriors and obviously the Raptors are not going to be doing that this season and would not

Be doing that this season even if they had this roster all season long to build with so we’re not going to get C crazy again this is more a sort of stylistic comparison and not an overall comparison of their potential or high-end upside etc etc I cannot express that enough but

Watching them tonight I think you’re going to see a lot of overlap in terms of how these teams run their offense our pal Samson folk pointed out there was that possession against the Mavericks on Wednesday where they ran a flex action and got Grady dick a wide open three

Working in concert with Scotty Barnes and that is Warriors stuff that is stuff they run for Klay Thompson with Draymond Green or Steph Curry with Draymond Green a million times over and as Samson said get used to that because you’re going to see it a million times over the next

Five years as well which is very exciting if Grady dick can be knocking down wide open threes coming off of split cuts that sounds pretty damn cool you know a lot of their numbers between these two teams this season you know and obviously noisy noisy numbers here with

How the Raptors have obviously changed their entire complexion of the roster over the course of the year but a lot of the principles they’ve been wanting to run all season you know 0.5 quick movement not terribly dependent on pick and roll lots of elbow stuff lots of cutting that’s all Warriors stuff they

Just now have the Personnel to actually run Warriors stuff and have it be successful in a way they didn’t early in the season when a lot of their threes were going to Dennis schruder right um and so you know if you just kind of look

At some of the tracking data some of the passing numbers some of the just sort of core genetic principles of these two teams they’re very Sim Raptors right now third in total passes made per game Warriors fourth they’re third and fourth in assist points created per game third

And fourth in assist second and third in potential assists these teams have ball movement built in to their system and what they want to do you know they’re not traditional heavy pick and roll teams either and obviously this has been a thing that’s been the bane of Warriors

Fans existence for a very long time where they would just want Steph Draymond pick and roll Steph KD pick and roll just run pick pick and roll please I feel like Steph kaminga pick and roll is going to be a thing that Warriors fans are clamoring for as well but

Obviously Steve cerr has been very married to his system and it’s hard to argue with the results considering how things have gone for Golden State over the years but obviously people always like that sort of base set pick and roll because why wouldn’t you want that when

Steph Curry as a pull-up shooting wizard would be you know if he were running pick and roll all the time he would be just as Unstoppable if not more Unstoppable than he current is as an off ball magnet for opposing defenses and so you know the Raptors also not very heavy

On pick and roll this season they uh currently right now um both rank bottom five in terms of uh pick and roll ball handler possessions you know possessions finished off by the pick and roll ball handler both bottom 10 in possessions finished off by the pick and roll rle

Man um obviously the Raptors not quite at the bottom of the league because there’s been plenty of yaka hurdle finishing on the role but not a ton of it and that’s just it’s not been a thing they’ve leaned on all that often of course the Raptors like the Warriors

Have had have a sort of Base pick and roll set they can go to quickly purle quickly Barnes you know I I wonder if you know the Echoes of you know more Steph Draymond pick and roll are going to be resembled by Raptors fans in coming years if quickly Barn’s pick and

Roll doesn’t become a core principle of what the Raptors do I would maybe bet against that at this point considering the school that it seems Darko comes from and the way they want to run this offense pick and roll is just not going to be a staple of what they do they want

To have stuff where their their bigs are pulled out they want to be able to sort of get actions flowing towards the rim with cutting and obviously they want to build out those threes and create a ton of off ball looks for guys like Emanuel quickly for Grady dick for Gary Trad Jr

Right now Etc um you know they they want to run this thing in a similar way to what the Warriors do and again the numbers kind of back that up both teams are bottom five in isolation frequency this season as well um they’re both 13th and 14th and handoffs which is funny

There’s nothing extreme about that they’re middle of the pack but they’re both right next to each other which I guess bolsters my point that they are the Spider-Man meme they are uh the Warriors are number one in cuts and the Raptors are number seven and you know I

Think that number is going to keep on up ticking for the Raptors as well the Warriors are number one in offscreen possessions the Raptor is currently 16th but surely trending upwards since the trade and obviously since RJ Barrett came in there’s a ton of offscreen stuff

They work with him I would assume as Grady dick gets more ingratiated they’re going to work him more in terms of off ball stuff having him as a motion shooter coming off of pin Downs things like that um so I would assume that that number is going to be more in line by

The end of the season you can’t isolate on nba.com for dates with this particular Play Type data um but I my hunch is just based on watching that the Raptors are climbing up the offscreen charts as well and again it just it’s all kind of lining up in terms of the

Possessions these teams do and do not prioritize the other thing too is transition right the Warriors now don’t run a lot of transition they’re dead last in transition frequency but they’re old as hell that makes sense when you’re in your 30s you don’t like to run I can

Relate to that but the 20145 Warriors think back to those teams they ran like absolute Maniacs they were number three in transition frequency back in 20145 and like in the pre- Durant era before their halfcourt offense just became kind of a cheat code and it was a cheat before that anyway because Steph

Existed and Draymond existed and Clay existed but before KD they were just constantly running down your throat and you know they were the chaos team right forcing turnovers and then completely flum Xing you and ruining you going the other way whether it was scoring at The Rim whether it was just bombing threes

On you in transition whatever it was they were that was their calling card this was a transition heavy team way back in the day the Raptors currently number one in the league in transition frequency and since February 1st totally lapping the field in that department as

Well so again you see those sort of through lines of the team DNA lining up between these two teams and like I said off the top you could pick worse teams to try to replicate obviously the Raptors are not working with the same Talent right now but as far as play

Style as far as you know skill sets and how they mesh there’s not all that much difference between you know the way the 2014 15 Warriors lined up and the way the Raptors do right now right those Warriors teams had a of course Steph clay Harrison Barnes Draymond and Andrew

Bogot was their starting five Andre Iguodala coming off the bench the Raptors do not have an Andre Iguodala Bruce Brown is not Andre Iguodala of course um but that starting five pretty similar right you have you know obviously gr Grady dick Gary Trent Jr I’m speaking about Grady dick in the

Context of this team build because I think he has a much better chance of being in the long-term plans being in the starting five than Gary Trent Jr does but it’s a similar idea right Trench just like a depressed version of that sort of off-ball movement shooter

That Klay Thompson is I don’t think he’s anywhere close to it frankly comparatively but if you swap grd dick in there and you go quickly Grady RJ Barrett as the Harrison Barnes stand in Scotty as your stand in for Draymond Green and yaka purle as your Andrew

Bogot comparison like you can squint and see a kind of similar alignment in terms of player skill sets although I think RJ Barrett offers maybe a little bit more downhill juice we get to that coming up when it comes to differences between these two teams but overall it makes some sense right

That the Raptors with the players they have on hand would want to try to replicate particularly that 2014 15 Warriors team and you know all of the Warriors team since then in terms of their skill sets in terms of the way they run their stuff the stylistic you

Know sort of core principles of their team I want to come back on the other side though and get into where things are going to be different and things the Raptors are just simply not going to be able to match when it comes to those Warriors and obviously defense is a big

Thing small ball ability is going to be a big thing and so much more we’ll get to that coming up in just one sec Today’s Show is brought to you by our friends over at prize picks right now it’s the best time to go play prize

Things in which the Raptors and warriors are going to differ going forward again a lot of them right the Raptors just simply don’t have the high-end talent that the Golden State Warriors have had over the last 10 seasons I don’t think I’m telling Tales out of school when I

Say that I don’t think I’m being like negative I think I’m being very realistic obviously the Warriors are one of the best teams we’ve ever seen the Raptors are not going to be that but again stylistically lots of stuff will be similar because of the skill sets

They have on hand that said there will be differences as well and I think it’s smart for the Raptors to you know lean into the things that make them different and make them sort of separate from what the Warriors have been because look you can only copycat so much this was a

Thing with the Warriors right their small ball death lineup all these teams were like we’re going to just get small and we’ll match them well no you’re not because you’re not as good you don’t have the talent you’re not going to match them going small and so it would

Be you know it stands to reason that the Raptors should not be trying to do exactly what the Warriors do because they don’t have the same skill sets on hand and their roster right now particular is not at all cut out to be the small ball revolutionaries that the

Golden State Warriors were and frankly the NBA’s in a different spot now than it was back in 20145 when small ball was this novel concept and and big men by and large were still pretty stilted in their sort of skill development not a ton of three-point shooting available

From bigs not even a ton of playmaking now around the NBA bigs are just more talented more skilled more craft driven than they’ve ever been and so small ball is a much harder thing to make tenable the Warriors have dealt with this in recent years all sorts of teams have

Dealt with this trying to go small the Raptors back you know even as recently as the bubble in 2020 you know they started to see okay there are limitations to this small ball thing when they had Fred Van vets you know Norm pal and Kyle Lowry is they’re

They’re one two and three they made it work I don’t think that works in today’s NBA because in the last four years things have changed so much so many big skilled players have come into the league or come into their own and made it so it’s just a big guys world out

There now and so going small I don’t think is really going to be in the bag for this Raptor team and I think as currently constituted it’s just not like they don’t have the players they don’t have the bulk they don’t have the girth to go and do that right Scotty Barnes I

Think has potential to be a perfectly passable small ball five in stretches of minutes I think that’s a thing he’s going to be able to do he’s obviously got the rim protection knowhow um he’s big he’s switchable is he’s not great at switching out onto guards but he can

Maybe get there we’ll see Draymond Green obviously one of the best switch Defenders we’ve ever seen and unlocked those Warriors teams who as good as they were on offense because of Draymond and because of clay because of Iguodala because of bogot frankly back in 20145 they were still one of the best defenses

Every single year of their entire Dynasty right like that’s just a thing they were because of what Draymond can unlock there’s not such a player on this Raptor team who can unlock that level of defensive potency especially when they go small um if you just look at the

Numbers Scotty Barnes this season in nearly 2,000 possessions of Scotty with no traditional Center on the floor so no yaka purle no Kelly Alin no jonte Porter I didn’t isolate for no precious aoua just because I think precious wasn’t really always being played as a five

Sometimes he was I wouldn’t say he’s a traditional five either way but in the minutes where Scotty was on the on the floor without Yak oen or jonte Porter the Raptors minus 1.8 per 100 possessions with a defensive rating in the 37th percentile of all lineups in

The NBA not ideal right you’re not going to have that be a staple core lineup no lineup with Scotty at the five is getting anything like death lineup as a nickname treatment it’s just not happening for comparison sake Draymond Green at Center lineups back in 20145

During the dawn of the death lineup so no bogit no Festa aili over 2,000 possessions and a plus 16.4 net rating 99th percentile offense 94th percentile defense per clean the glass it’s just not going to be attainable for the Raptors to do that the death lineup itself Steph clay Iguodala Barnes and

Draymond Green Plus 27 per 100 possessions absurd ridiculous defense is not going to be at least small ball defense is not going to be where this Raptor’s team can replicate what those warriors did barring some serious additions on the wing to give them some more bulk and size and you know all that

Stuff length etc etc switch ability in particular where they’re also going to different on offense is I think they’re going to be way more of a rim pressure team than the Warriors have ever really been the Warriors this season dead last in terms of frequency at the rim and

They’ve never been a team that gets to the rim a ton in the traditional they get a lot of dunks and stuff out of their beautiful actions but of course they skew towards threes because why wouldn’t you when you have Stephen Clay on the team they’re going to obviously

Rack up three-point attempts and three-point volume more than most teams will with the Raptors as much as quickly and Grady dick and Gary Trent Jr are good three-point Shooters they still skew towards guys who finish at The Rim RJ Barrett an absolutely brilliant at Rim scorer way more Punchy as a driver

Than Harrison Barnes ever was for example um so he gives them that at Rim element Scotty Barnes right now Rim scoring is where he lives that’s where he’s best you know the three-pointer is nice when it’s there but it’s not all that reliable and he’s a better scorer

At The Rim than Draymond Green can really ever say that he was was gonna be or ever was um and then yaka purle interior finishing is massive as well that gives them way more punches a team on the inside which actually I think when you couple that with the spacing

That it quickly provides and all of the ways you can turn that into shots at The Rim just by leveraging space I I think it’s pretty interesting as a sort of collection of skills but they’re never going to be the Warriors when it comes to overall three-point volume and

They’re they’re going to have to skew towards being a rim team and look they’ve done that beautifully since the Pascal trade they are number three in the NBA in Rim frequency that’s going to be a massive difference between them and the Warriors at their very best even

With Kevin Durant that was a team that lived in the mid-range that was a team that did not have to get to the rim every single time because why would you force yourself to do that work when you don’t have to when you can just drop in

Shots from 18 or 35 feet away you’re going to do that because it’s easier it’s human nature baby uh but either way without the two best Shooters on the team they are going to have to be much more as far as like an at Rim team and I

Think that’s fine right you can run the same principles of your offense you can get into your your your elbow actions and stuff like that and the end result can be easy shots at The Rim not Threes And while threes are worth more than two shots at The Rim pretty damn valuable

And still the most valuable shot in all of basketball and if the Raptors can turn a warrior style system into a machine that gets them shots at The Rim in addition to threes for guys like quickly and dick then I think that’s a really nice balanced attack that they can go

Throw out there you know where do they finish on offense between now and the end of the season I’m not sure they’re sixth right now since the All-Star break or they were when I last checked yesterday um you know can they be a top 10 offense in the final third of the

Season I think it’s on the table I I think they you know I’m not saying it’s going to happen or even likely but I think it’s there for them to do if they keep on running this system and a lot of that is because they can absolutely cook

At the rim and that is a huge thing that the Warriors just never were really known for and so while they kind of putting a bow on this whole thing while I I I think there are some very clear lines to draw between the Warriors of

The last decade and what the Raptors are trying to build here specifically with the skill sets of the guys who we know are going to be around on this team for a long time it’s going to have to be different because you can’t go and just

Be like well we’ll just be the Warriors no one can just be the Warriors it’s just the way it is but I’m really excited to watch tonight and I hope you are excited too to watch tonight and kind of keep an eye out for oh the Warriors just ran this thing the Raptors

Just ran and oh this is like again pointing at each other like hey look at us look at us doing the same things this is fun um I’m really excited for it hope you’re excited for it too should be a great one obviously a very different

Game than what we saw in early January where the Raptors had maybe their best win of the season and the one moment where it seemed like oh my God the SE yakum quickly Barrett Barnes coret p is going to be a thing going forward oh how sweet those four games were how sweet

That Warriors game was obviously not going to be our our lot in life going forward but the new look team pretty damn interesting as well and if you’re doing stuff that the warriors were doing you could be doing a lot worse so we will leave it there thank you so much

For tuning in we’ll be back again on Monday to talk about the games over the weekend and set you up for another week of interesting Raptors ball as the playin race continues the Nets beat the Hawks last night huge one in the playing race we’ll get into all that uh and sort

Of track where things are after another weekend of ball coming up back on Monday until then enjoy tonight’s game we’ll talk to you soon bye-bye

In Episode 1587, Sean Woodley goes solo to discuss the ways in which the Toronto Raptors new-look roster shares some commonalities with tonight’s opponent, the Golden State Warriors — and more specifically the early Steph-Klay-Draymond Warriors who took the league by storm back in 2014-15. Off the top, Sean digs into the ways in which the Raptors current roster and skillsets resemble those of the early stage dynastic Warriors, with Immanuel Quickley’s shooting gravity, Gradey Dick’s shooting and off-ball movement and Scottie Barnes’ playmaking from the forward position somewhat mirroring the dynamic between Curry, Thompson and Green, while Jakob Poeltl and RJ Barrett in their own ways resemble what Andrew Bogut and Harrison Barnes brought to the table. Of course, the Raptors are not the Warriors, and will almost certaintly never be the Warriors, but considering where Darko Rajakovic has drawn influence from, and the players the Raptors now have, why not try to replicate them stylistically? Next, Sean dives into playtype data to show just how similarlary the Raptors and Warriors play, with a special focus on how the 2014-15 Warriors line up with how the Raptors approach transition, cutting, and pick-and-roll. Lastly, Sean examines the ways in which the Raptors will have to differentiate themselves from the Death Lineup era Warriors to account for their much less defensively talented roster, and the changing landscape of the NBA.
