Memphis Grizzlies count on Luke Kennard in win over Brooklyn Nets

Memphis Grizzlies count on Luke Kennard in win over Brooklyn Nets

On this episode of lockon Grizzlies I’ve got a special guest I was tired of being alone I missed a Michael Cole but a good friend of mine Parker Fleming from my grizzly bear blue days is here with me and we are going to talk Grizzlies Brooklyn Memphis shocking the Nets there

In New York then we’ll talk about Luke canard’s value to the Grizzlies moving forward and Parker does a great job breaking down the NBA draft we’re going to do some preliminary discussion of prospects next here on lock Grizzlies let’s lock in you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies

Podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every Day welcome to a terrific Tuesday episode of lock on Grizzlies I am one of your hosts Joe Mullen and for the first time in a long time I say that I have a co-host but it’s a special guest co-host I’ll bring him in here momentarily it’s

Not to Michael Cole your eyes do not deceive you if you are on YouTube and uh wherever you get your podcast hopefully you’re liking commenting rating reviewing subscribing on YouTube as well as Amazon Spotify Apple literally anywhere you can get a podcast you can get lock down Grizzlies but I’ll bring

Him in here momentarily this episode of lockon Grizzlies brought to you by the good folks over at FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks if your bet wins visit fanduel.com lockon to get started

Again I am your host Joe Mullen X I was supposed to fly solo on this Tuesday edition of the show but wouldn’t you know it the coolest group chat there is in Grizzlies them myself Sean Coleman and my co-host Parker Fleming for thisis episode I’ve known Parker for quite a

While now going all the way back to our grizzly bear Blues days over at ESP Nation Parker has done a phenomenal job everywhere he’s been and it’s great to have him on now he runs a substack that you most certainly should subscribe to I am a subscriber I’ll let him pronounce

It because I always butchered it and mess it up but Parker thank you so much for being here on this episode of lock on Grizzlies again de Michael will be back tomorrow but I was tired of being alone so I called on an old friend how

You doing buddy man I’m doing great you know uh I haven’t podcasted much this I think I’ve only been on one podcast this season I sacrificed uh the podcast to do more draft coverage but yeah doing some stuff over at Hold Up Wait sub saac elus

Wait sub saac alus you got the I like that yeah my my brother my brother-in-law and sister-in-law got this for me for Christmas so that I can have fun my podcast and stuff I’m like that’s awesome now I need to be on more podcasts and the wish and know the I

Hope nobody hops off because I’m not absolute rock star to Michel Cole award winning journalist to Michael Cole um but I think this is still gonna be a fun conversation I’m I’m more nervous that they’re gonna like you more than they like me and they’re gonna be like hey

You should replace Joe with Parker and it could be Parker and demichel and they can you know have a much better podcast but you know maybe this will be the start of something new here every once in a while while we’ll bring you on when

I’m alone and uh we we can have some good conversations because you’re more than more than certainly able to have such talks about the Memphis Grizzlies you’ve been covering them almost as long as me you’re just not as old as me yeah um I I think Parker you know jumping

Into Grizzly stuff here the Brooklyn game on Monday was really interesting because I feel like I have like a magical power that I’ve developed in the last day or so like there’s some sort of osmosis or telekinesis that I have developed where I say something or I

Talk about a player and then they perform better and I’m wondering how to handle this new responsibility because if Spider-Man taught us anything it’s that with great power comes great responsibility I called out Luke Canard on the Monday episode of the show I called out Trey Json on the Monday

Episode and those two guys literally had their best games in a long time plus Vince Williams Jr doing some nice things Santi Alama Jake laravia you know your boy I’m sure that there will be uh some other names and other ideas that you’ll float here but again I feel like that we

All just need to acknowledge the powers that I’ve developed as I’ve you know grown as a lockon Grizzlies host the Grizzlies leaning on Canard and gemson in particular to pull off an upset win in Brooklyn yeah I mean Joe you have a very prominent voice in the Grizzlies social media landscape Grizz media

Landscape as well uh with your days at lock on Grizzlies and gbb where I feel like now they just get the sense you may not even be putting it out on the airwaves or anything fair they might just sense I think Joe molx is being a

Hater right now let’s go prove him wrong there is a very strong energy that I give off when I get into I don’t know if you’re able to catch the Monday episode Parker but I I use my yelling podcast voice which you’re not supposed to do

Right like I’m not bis I’m not one of those guys they people don’t want to hear that they they come for hard-hitting analysis and for reasons to make fun of me they don’t want to get yelled at as they’re on the treadmill or driving to work but I do think that it’s

Really cool to see the success that Luke andar and we’ll talk more about Luke later on in the show but whether it’s Canard jemson you know the team at large everybody kind of had flashes in this game and it’s probably what is going to be realistic for Memphis moving forward

Parker they’re going to have games like Portland right the different ways of losing whether it’s blowing a lead or whether it’s getting blown out and then there will be times inexplicably that maybe their opponent overlooks them maybe they catch them on an off night and The Grizzlies still have NBA basketball

Players that are capable of producing so no John Morant no Desmond Bane no jiren Jackson Jr no Marcus Mart no problem against the Nets the other guys were able to get the job done even with Brooklyn being relatively healthy they were missing a guy or two but nothing to

The scale that Grizzlies are dealing with yeah um and you know you you kind of hit the nail on the head there and I think people are per ex I saw people throwing out the whole like oh they’re going to develop a losing culture stuff like that but I don’t think they

Realize how hard it is to play NBA basketball without a NBA point guards and be NBA big men and see Allstar Talent like take take for example the Brooklyn Nets they with all due respect to our favorite trade Target male Bridges they don’t have an All-Star on that team and as

They’ve seen this year it’s hard to win without All-Star talent and you know um I I I know with Luke will get into that I’m sure your rant about I didn’t get to listen but I feel like your rant about Luke canar was about him not shooting as

Many threes yeah yeah very upset about that especially when evidence is presented in conversations I have with people just watching film as I do you know Luke Canard you know not quite to the John Kar carefully curated three-point shots but I do think there’s something to Luke insisting at times

Almost to make the extra pass when he especially in this current iteration of the Grizzlies is most certainly their best offensive option yeah it’s it’s one of those things where I tweeted about it I wrote about it and just from watching the games you have a lot of guys and as much

Growth as Vince Williams has shown in this department a lot of these young guys are still getting reps and getting used to playing within a flow of an NBA offense but also to initiating a lot of these actions they’re not playing off of John Morant deson Bane jiren Jackson Jr

Marcus Smart they’re the ones having to create a lot of stuff and Canard is the player available right now with the most experience he’s a pretty solid playmaker and I also feel like it would be one of those things like damn if he does damn if he doesn’t because if he was let’s

Say in the in the Portland game the other night he was hoisting 12 13 threes a game like people are expecting him to with this roster it’s going to be well why is he not passing the ball to GG Jackson where it’s like somebody has to

Pass the ball uh I think tonight he just had the ultimate blend of it but I mean yeah I just think everything right now boils down to it’s could to be a lot tougher to set stuff up because of the lineups thrown out right now it’s a part of the growing

Pain process but I think tonight was the best illustration of just that togetherness on both sides of the floor and again there’s gonna be nights like this there’s G to be nights like you said it’s gonna there’s be nights like Portland but the thing I want to just

See the most consistent the thing I want to see on a night out night effort is an effort I spoiled my own words just running with this real quick but just effort man because you know last week’s Brooklyn game that Friday Brooklyn game they got punched in the mouth and I

Didn’t fight back whereas this game they weathered storms you know they that fourth quarter was probably one of the most hilarious fourth quarters I’ve ever seen from just it looks like nobody I want to say nobody wanted it but I felt like both sides both the Grizzlies and

Brooklyn were making it a lot harder on themselves um so yeah I’m always here for a good win shout out Taylor Jenkins win number 200 yeah 200 wins for Taylor Jenkins I feel like that’ll be a good topic for demichel and I to cover on our Wednesday episode um where Jenkins fits

In the echelon of Grizzlies coaches and obviously still more work to do but you know we talk about him getting fired more than we should so maybe we talk about where he ranks among the best coaches in Grizzlies history that might be good topic and again I want to stress

Parker Fleming is a wonderful guest host if anything he’ll replace me to Michel Cole will be back don’t be panicked uh I’m the odd man out more than as I’s box of Parker Fleming hopping on lockon Grizzlies when we come back here on lockon Grizzlies we’re gonna talk a

Little bit more about Luke Gard I believe he had seven or so assists that facilitation that I’m a big fan of with Luke you know his value moving forward Michael and I have talked a lot about Canard versus Adams Stephen Adams who was traded by Memphis I’ll get uh

Parker’s take on that next here on lockon Grizzlies but first this episode of lockon Grizz is brought to you by better help sometimes we all need the opportunity to get something off our chest and I want to stress we’re talking about sports here right we’re talking about the Memphis

Grizzlies we’re talking about a team that’s what three and 12 three and 13 in their last so many games big or small while Sports may not seem like that big of a deal they can frustrate us and in the grand scheme of life it’s important to let out any frustration especially to

People that are unbiased about what’s going on in your day-to-day life therapy can be different for everybody most of us have bigger problems than our favorite sports team struggling it’s important to get things off your chest every once in a while if you’re thinking of starting therapy give better help a

Stick with us welcome back to lock on Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X joined by my special co-host for this episode of lockdown Grizzlies Parker Fleming of grizzly bear blues and Bluff City media and all these wonderful things that he and I used to do together I missed

Parker very excited to have him on the show with me and again maybe we can make this a thing every once in a while you know demichel and I go solo every once in a while and maybe you know if I miss demichel or something like that

I’ll I’ll call to the bullpen and see if Parker Fleming wants to hang out with me and talk Grizzlies basketball for a little bit uh here on this Tuesday episode in particular demichel will be back with me on Wednesday Parker demichel and I have had it out about

Luke gard and you know I want to stress I love dichael Cole and I think I it’s at the stage of our relationship where I love him more than he loves me and that’s fine all right that’s fine I’m not bitter or sad about that at all but I think with demichael and

The thing that we’ve had our biggest brewhaha about recently are Stephen Adams and Luke Gard he has made it very clear both at the Commercial Appeal as the Memphis Grizzlies beat writer and here on lock on Grizzlies that he thinks Memphis made a mistake that he thought

That Stephen Adams should still be here as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies and Luke Canard should have been the priority of moving off of and I disagree respectfully of course I think Luke canard’s Elite three-point shooting the playmaking that they haven’t tapped into

Enough which we saw in the game on M day seven assists to go along with his great scoring night I am a believer in Luke Canard staying with Memphis moving forward obviously there’s still potential for roster moves and Luke’s contract is one that can pretty easily be moved comparatively speaking in terms

Of when Memphis tries to do some form of roster consolidation going in a different direction whatever the case might be so I’ll pose the question to you Parker Fleming how do you perceive the value of Luke Canard moving forward this season and into a pretty consequential offseason for the

Grizzlies approaching this summer yeah I mean I think it’s I need to make sure I start this conversation by saying that I’m probably higher on Luke Canard than most and here’s the thing I just find really perplexing within all this is all these years Joe dating back to when you

Were commenting on grizzly bear Blues post as bull yeah like 2012 yeah back when I was just a high school kid with a Bieber haircut what was the big need for the Memphis Grizzlies uh three-point shooting three-point shooting the Grizz and I’m kind of spoiling something I

Have working I’m working on for next week right now the Grizzlies are employing somebody paying somebody to be a three-point shooter that has connected on 44% of his three-pointers this season and guess what he’s done it for four straight great Seasons which is part of the reason why I argue Luke Canard is

One of the top 10 three-point Shooters in the history of the NBA he’s probably like number eight nine or 10 but I think he’s in the top 10 Parker yeah I was gonna say the only other player that’s done that in that many consecutive Seasons Steph Curry there are only six

Players in NBA history that have shot 44% or better from three on six or more attempts per game in multiple seasons Luke Canard is one of them this team still with Luke Canard on the roster they’re biggest Achilles heel to this day it’s three-point shooting and guess

What when you have a paint heavy point guard like John Morant when you have an ISO post presence like jiren Jackson Jr when Desmond Bane is evolving his game as quote unquote downhill Dez what do you need next to them floor spacing and that’s just my thing with

Luke I mean granted the results they’ve been inconsistent this year but you know I’m P I pulled up cleaning the glass here let me just rattle off the offensive ratings with Luke Canard and John Moran or Desmond Bane please and this is before including the impressive performance from Luke on Monday night

Yes this was last season so I know it’s not this season but we also seen John just clarifying absolutely yeah yeah with ja Dez and Luke on the Flor together the Grizzlies scored a 144 points per 100 possessions and 136 possessions not counting what they did in the playoffs when they basically

Blitzed the Lakers anytime Luke canar played Dylan Brooks with Luke and Dez on the floor together which had more sample size because of um jaw suspension the Grizzlies scored 130 points per 100 possessions with those two guys on the floor together seems pretty good with jaah and Luke Canard the Grizzlies scor scored

126 points per 100 possessions I understand the defensive concerns I understand that he doesn’t have this flashy bag that most bench bucket Getters have but Luke Canard makes your offense better and I understand like if you’re worried about the defensive utility of him in a playoff series I

Worry more about that like it’s matchup dependent if you’re really if you really think about it like I think it’d be easier to play him against like Oklahoma City where you can hide him off like Cas Wallace or Josh giddy rather than playing him against like Minnesota where

You’re just hiding him off of Jaden McDaniels or playing against the Clippers and hiding him off of uh Russell Westbrook or tence man like I mean I understand that I understand the cont like I understand the contract I understand he’s it’d be outlandishly he’s Untouchable but for a team that still lacks three-point

Shooting I’m not I’m not tossing Luke Canard in a sign and trade for Nick Claxton like I’m not doing that so that’s just kind of where I stand on Luke I think he his value is Amplified when he when he can capitalize off I know you hate this word

Joe and you might kick me off the Pod for using no no I invited you I won’t kick you off but I know where you’re going with this his value will shine and be more Amplified when he is either a capitalizing off the gravity his star players or B his outside shooting creates

Gravity for Star players to excel at what they’re best at and that’s the value of Luke Gard that’s double the gravity right some usually you have to pay double for that kind of action but with Luke Gard you get one and the same and my biggest concern with Luke is his

Ability to get open in the playoffs right I’ve talked about that a lot and you know going up against a longer more athletic group like the Lakers the Clippers and again we’re talking about a hypothetical playoff series that isn’t happening this year because Memphis is

Closer to a top four pick than they are the play in currently but if you are assuming that Luke is going to be around long term that is a process that you have to consider because you have to assume that the Grizzlies will be back in the playoffs next year otherwise what

In the heck are we talking about right like what’s the point we should be blowing this thing up if that’s not the case where Canard fits in there is going to be fascinating to watch unfold I think that they can keep Luke they can address the Center position I think GG

Jackson and fce Williams Jr becoming what they are allows for Memphis a little bit more flexibility when it comes to trying to find a wing I’m I’m more of the mind to now that they’ve made themselves more financially solvent if they don’t trade the pick which we’ll talk more about here momentarily using

It on a big you know my F5 faam agenda that I’m gonna continue to push U focusing on that sort of stuff and allowing for the team to continue to find chemistry and seeing what they actually look like healthy right obviously no longer having Stephen Adams

That changes things a little bit but I want to see that and I I think that you know I think folks might agree with me but let me know in the comments do you agree with me and Parker are you Pro Luke Canard do you want to move on from

Him again one game doesn’t make me right as much as I want to claim victory obviously larger sample sizes are important Parker yes um I was also going to say too when it comes to salary matching you know I don’t like you know promoting trade suggestions on on the

Timeline that’s just not my my cup of tea I’ll save I love doing that yes I’ll save it for Content purposes like podcasts or articles but when it comes to salary matching I look at these three players you have Z Williams and John conar who are going from making six

Million combine this year to $6 million each next year that’s $12 million it’s big joke and you can also argue that GG Jackson he doesn’t he’s not the one making Luke Canard Expendable he’s making San Alama Expendable and if you put those two you put those three players in a trade

Package you get around 16 to 17 million plus a team will have the extension eligibility and the potential restricted free agency of two big forwards that you can at least gamble on a rebuilding team might like that or a team that you’re doing a pick swap with maybe an Atlanta

Hawks that has a young Center named oink Aang and some lower picks I don’t know that’s kind of my thing like I it’s one of those things where I think there’s just better way for salary matching that will also allow you to maintain and maybe even reconstruct your depth in a

Sense I think you’re on to something there let Parker and I know what you’re thinking in the comments below when we come back here on lockon Grizzly we’re going to close out this episode talking about the great work on Parker’s substack that he does covering the NBA

Draft how he feels about what Memphis should do we’ll talk about that next here on lockdown Grizzlies but first this episode of lockon Grizzlies is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more at FanDuel America’s number one sports book get buckets with your first bet because right now new

Picks in the NBA drafts again it’s a little bit early before March Madness but we’ll pick Parker’s brain next stick with us welcome back to lockon Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X not flying solo to Michel Cole will be back with me on the Wednesday edition of the podcast I found

A special guest host Parker Fleming good friend of mine doing a great work on substack now but he is you know connected to me through Grizz bear Blues Back in the Day gbb live theast that we did over there I passed it on to him he did a great job before he moved

Along very happy to have Parker with me follow Parker Parker on X at Paca Flocka if you don’t already do so and again deich will be back tomorrow if anything I’ll be replaced by Parker and uh and they’ll move on and have a long and happy relationship I’m sure uh Parker

We’ve been talking about the here and now with the Grizzlies so far on this episode let’s look to the Future a little bit let’s put out our pull out our crystal ball so to speak speak and you do a great job diving into the draft over on your substack talk to me a

Little bit about your perspective on you know say Memphis lands at five or six right in the lottery do they take a big do they take the best talent available even if it’s something they don’t quote unquote need as a contender how do you approach if you are Zack kimman if you

Are in the Grizzlies front office what advice are you providing about utilizing this resource going into a pretty important year for everybody involved with the Grizzlies organization yeah I mean obviously it it’d be uh Blasphemous to not say um your best player available and I think the beauty with oh I do that

All the time the thing the thing blasphemy thy name is Joe the thing that’s so beautiful I get it’s beautiful it’s a beautiful nightmare Beautiful Disaster however you want to spin it with this draft for one it’s the perfect dra draft to find guys to compliment a core which the Grizzlies already have

And it’s also just a very interesting draft in the sense that there’s no consensus where you can have your own different philosophy like I’ve seen like I shared my big board today and an exercise that was basically my top 15 board pass it to the next person I quote

Tweeted it with mine and I saw different quote tweets I saw people have Cody Williams number one and say Alexander SAR you know I know people that like Nicola topic more topic is the only player in my top 15 that I haven’t had the chance to watch yet U I will have

That for a deeper study but I mean there’s a lot of different directions that they can go I worry about the wing in the sense that like if you were to go with like a Matas bues zachari R Shar or Cody Williams I worry about that in the

Sense of like you already have GG Jackson who’s is going to be young do you want to rely on another teenage 20-year-old Wing next and none of those guys none of those guys are giants and I am very much pushing the fif agenda I I want big meaty men

Slapping meat Parker that’s what I’m shout out big e shout out big e but that’s what I want from the Memphis Grizzlies tell me that I can get a big in the lottery whether they trade back you know who who is a big that you’re excited about I’m willing to take big

Old Zach Edy at this point from Purdue 7 fo three 300 pounds again big meaty dudes setting screens getting rebounds I don’t need him to do another freaking thing I just need him to do some of the stuff that Stephen Adams did while being a gigantic body that can take pressure

Off of jiren Jackson Jr tell me why I’m wrong you’re not wrong because the big man that I’m excited about and a guy that if everything checks out right medically I would pick him six I pick him five or six and that’s Donovan kingan from yeah now we’re talking I’d

Rather him than the big guy from Purdue he is I think I heard someone say he’s 73 Barefoot wow and what’s crazy is I need to compare a game I scouted earlier to this game I at least just saw clips of uh on Sun On Sunday when they

Destroyed Sean Hall I watched some of that game he looked impressive yeah but he also looked the thing that I noticed is while looking gigantic he looked Slimmer like he was a big dude kind of maybe questions about looking out of shape but I guess prior to the season he

Had some sort of like respiratory onus that kind of s lined up for a little bit but he my concern at first with cling was like can I trust him with starter minutes and then I started think about the context a little bit of like wait

He doesn’t need to play 30 minutes a night if you’re gonna have jiren Jackson Jr play the five if Brandon Clark is as healthy as Pete panica was saying on the broadcast he’s playing the five too so you just need kingan to play 20 to 25

Minutes a night heck I all right I’ll bring up this statline the other the other day against Sean Hall U 19 points 11 rebounds five blocks in 23 minutes it gets mark who has a NBA level Center Prospect in Oso Agoda um 17 points 10 rebounds three stocks seven of eight shooting 24

Minutes like his per minute production if healthy is too undeniable to pass up on in my opinion given the absolute need for the Grizzlies to get a big man and frankly I would be cool with him starting next year I would be 100% cool with him starting year I mean think about this

Joe look at Derrick Lively this year with Dallas how much of a godson he’s been for Luca as a massive Outlet because he’s just a big dude that can catch the ball turn around and put it in the basket Walker Kessler demolishing block records for the Utah Jazz I saw

The ey rooll because it’s like they could have just had Walker Kessler um Robert Williams in different playoffs series with the Boston Celtics I mean Jared Allen when he was with Brooklyn like rookie bcks can produce early it’s not like it’s not like the older NBA like hell Stephen Adams when

He was early days a spring chicken in OKC he replaced big perk rather quick quickly so I mean I just think if we’re going big man here I also got a shout out 929 Gabe we uh he is helping spear uh spearhead the eve Missy agenda

Big man out of Baylor he’s been doing a little bit more stuff on the ball around the elbows athletic is all get out um he’s another Center to watch for but yeah I mean if you’re if we’re out here pushing Fifi faam agendas Donathan kingan is the absolute one he is the

Chosen one Joe he is the guy that you will be writing columns about speaking it into existence like you did with chaina Parson oh so long ago oh yeah that was a long time ago goodness gracious I’m sure people people would probably rather me not do that yeah actually

Don’t no that’s like the powers that I have again with great power comes great responsibility bringing it back full circle yeah fif five Fon all right that’s what I’m interested in I’m looking for that that is what I’m passionate about going into this NBA draft whether they trade the pick use

The pick they need some meat in the middle and that’s what I’m looking for let us know what you’re looking for in the comments below thank you so much F Parker for hanging out with me on this episode of lock on Grizzlies anything you want to plug before we get out of

  1. Hey guys someone should tell Kennard to see a doctor about the need to scratch his head repeatedly during games and interviews. He may have a problem. It appears he has started the balding process.

  2. Luke Kennard makes you want tocheer for him but here's the thing. His good performances come intermittently and not consistly. This is why he has floated around a little bit.
If he played well 6 or 7 out of 10 games instead f 2 or 3 I would keep him but that is not reality.

  3. The draft has always been important to the Grizzlies and should never be thrown away. Big man is the thing and with Sarr, Filipowski and Clingan (I might iclude Ware also) are available in the firs 14 picks.
