Hello and welcome into another episode of lockon wolves today is the postgame podcast for the T Wolves win over the Portland Trailblazers on Monday night it was a good enough bounceback after a rocky weekend at Target Center for the Wolves cat wasn’t much better ant wasn’t

Much better it was it was a bit of a roller coaster for both players an interesting night for both wolves Superstars but the trusty veterans led by Rudy goar led the way for Minnesota Monday night we’ll break the whole thing down welcome in you are locked on wolves you are locked on

Going to talk about what went down at Target Center on Monday as the Wolves uh eased out of this seven game homeand with very little rest uh with a good enough win on Monday night against Portland it will break the whole game down here today it was kind of a weird

One in some ways non descript because it was a hoham win that should have been a win by more but there was the weird start for ant the cat foul trouble the the late lead that evaporated like at the same time you know I don’t know you

Beat a bad team by what was the final score Five Points like there they aren’t any major takeaways from this one but there was still a lot of stuff that happened along the way so I want to dive into a bit of that of course shine some light on the impressive performances

From the Wolves vets in this game it wasn’t cat and ant that led the way not at all not by a long stretch so I will talk about all that on the show today a big thank you first of all for making lock that wolves your first list in

Right so the way I would describe this performance in a word would be sluggish for the Timberwolves and and frankly like what first quarter of the Kings game last Friday was I think the word I’d use for that was discombobulated of course that ends up being a really exciting game a fun game

Goes to overtime the Wolves lose ant doesn’t play after halftime um and then Sunday a dominant first quarter but then things slowly slip away over the course of the final 36 minutes of that game and just obviously a disappointing close miserable offense Etc the offense I know the wol scored

119 against Portland on Monday but the offense felt way off for most of this game and I think a large part of that was the weird games that Anon I mean ant and Cat only combined for 27 points on 22 shots in this game they made one combined three

On six attempts and were eight of 12 at the line an and C were extremely quiet and fact uh there were what one two I guess I guess Tech not technically cat was the third leading scorer for the Wolves the Wolves dropped 119 only one guy scored

More than 19 points in this game they had a balanced scoring effort and that’s very rare for Minnesota um and it wasn’t balanced I know they got to 119 but it didn’t feel like it was balanced in a good way it just felt like they were searching and searching and searching

And sure enough I mean at half time they only had 58 points which is or 55 points excuse me which is you know you’d like to have more especially against a team like Portland that’s decimated by injuries the bottom you know bottom 10 defense as it is um in case like let me

Just rattle off some of the guys that are missing obviously DeAndre Aton was out uh scoot Henderson was gonna miss is gonna miss the entire uh road trip Shaden Sharps out for an extended period of time and uh at least in the case of scoot and Shaden sharp they were on the

Floor the last time the Wolves played the Blazers before the All-Star break Jeremy Grant also was out um I mean matis thull like when the Wolves beat Portland twice before the All-Star break I remember talking at the time about like hey Portland’s actually got like eight guys that either have been

Rotation guys on playoff teams whether it’s it’s in the case of tyll or you know we talk obviously Aon Jeremy Grant Brogden like guys on this roster who have who have been tested in the NBA and have been on good teams or guys that will be eventually like obviously scoot

Henderson had a desable start to the year but has been playing much better lately we saw that in Portland a few weeks ago Shaden Sharp’s a nice player like there’s Talent on this Portland team it’s a combination of the circumstances in the wake of the Dame trade and obviously all these injuries

And inexperienced coach and all that stuff um that that has led to them being the worst team in the west but they’d won a couple straight they beat Memphis twice very short-handed the Wolves for whatever reason we’re 14 and a half Point favorites on fuel for this game

Coming into this game I would have never bet the Wolves to cover that um factoring in the rest stuff right I mean this was the Wolves seventh game of a seven game home stand which sounds nice except for there were three back-to-backs that means six of the

Seven games were part of a back-to-back set for the Wolves uh it’s just crazy like just a just a it almost kind of negates being at home for that long when you don’t get any practice opportunities no real days off mixed in there um where you’re just

Kind of in between watching film from the last game and you’re not truly getting a day off or getting a true day of practice right so like this was always going to be a slog it was always going to be a difficult game for Minnesota regardless of who is on the

Floor for Portland like it’s just it’s it’s it’s um it’s human nature right and also like these guys of course they’re going to have tired legs at some point and it just it it also is very disappointing that this has to come right out of the All-Star break right

You get all that time off six days completely off or whatever it was for the Ws five or six guys for most of the or five or six days for most of the guys on the roster and then you come right out of it with whatever that was you

Know three back-to-back sets in in over the course of like nine days or whatever 10 days and seven home games but six games being part of a back-to-back set it kind of negates that Advantage if you’re the wolves and it hurts coming off the heels the All-Star break the

Wolves actually get two days off now on on Tuesday and Wednesday but then another back toback awaits on the road I think gets the Cleveland Indiana back toback so all that to say this was always going to be a tricky game for Minnesota Portland being as decimated as

They were gave me some hope that this thing could at least be there could be some separation um that wasn’t in the cards at least not until the fourth quarter and then the Wolves gave all that back to Minnesota was up two at the end of the first quarter they did have a

Bit of a flurry at the end of the second quarter and managed to be up by seven at halftime and the story for me throughout well to open obviously we have to talk about Anthony Edwards a missed the opening tap and I basically near as I

Could tell I think he had a quote with with not a quote but John krinski reported that he asked Aunt what the deal was and and uh he just said he lost track of time which I don’t know I mean I I guess you get one of those right

Maybe I don’t know I I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of that before without there being like a restroom emergency or like a an issue with the jersey or something weird right I like it’s not it’s not it’s not time to react to this in any way other than it’s

Aunt you know they won the game he ended up playing okay overall even though it was a quiet game for Anthony Edwards obviously a lot going on in his life late recently um you just hope that this isn’t some sort of weird pattern and I don’t want to say anything more than

That because who knows and I don’t want to be you know know debate show talking head guy this would get a lot more play nationally who knows maybe it will would get a lot more play asle if it was anyone besides the Wolves but hopefully nobody pays much attention to it and

It’s not an issue Beyond just being a weird thing that happened where ant didn’t start a game this season um so ant misses the opening tip ends up only not playing about the first minute before the ball goes out of bounds and Alexander Walker checks out ant checks

In ant doesn’t score a field goal he was two of four on free throws in the first half but didn’t make a field goal until the final 30 seconds of the second quarter in this game Minnesota then was down by uh down by seven at halftime

And just kind of held Ser excuse me held serve with Portland in the third quarter it was like what was actually a pretty good defensive performance to that point there were too many foray to the rim that were pretty uncontested from Portland Minnesota just did not did not

Provide much resistance at all and Rudy overall was good in this game very good and we’ll we’ll talk more about that but Portland scored at will in the second half and eventually the Wolves built a 15-point lead Portland kind of trimmed back into it or or trimmed it down into

The fourth quarter then the Wolves surged ahead before Portland made one final push I want to talk about kind of what happened in the fourth quarter here in a minute and uh then we’ll get into some individual performances and a couple of interesting uh takeaways from

This one in in the wake of the debacles on Friday and Sunday for the Wolves against the Kings and Clippers respectively so we’ll do all that here next today’s episode of lock up wolves is sponsored by better help sometimes we all need the opportunity to get something off our chest big or small

Certain things can really start to get to you it’s important to let that out especially to someone who’s unbiased on your life so today I want to say how I really feel about something you might even be thinking about the same thing this week and uh you might be if you’re

Listen if you’re listening or watching a wolves podcast it may seem like small potatoes but whatever’s got you bothered is worth talking about for me me it continues to be the perception of the Wolves as a non-serious contender and I just think it’s nuts um if you listen at

All to the the Simmons rillo it was the Bill Simmons podcast rillo was on it I think it was Monday’s episode yeah it was because they talked about Sunday’s games the Wolves Clippers game and at the end of the segment they got around to talking about how the case for the

Wolves to be a serious Conference Final two finals Contender is that they have the best defense in the league and they kind of talked you know Simmons say l about oh yeah it’s been the best defense over the last 20 games that ril’s like has been all year by a couple of points

Like the Wolves defense we talked about this is borderline like not maybe not historically dominant but dominant within the last decade and that alone if you have an elite unit like that should be enough to at least get you to the second round and in the discussion for a

Finals appearance I just think there still isn’t enough uh credit being given to where the timber will sit right now and I get it you got to do in the playoffs but right now we have the you know last 60 games or so to to work on

The body work for this year and I think the Wolves deserve a little bit more credit now that’s a bit of a mini rant perhaps there’s something that you want to rant about too and hey most of us have bigger problems than our favorite sports team I get that but look therapy

Experts of lockdown plus our national shows covering every League find locked on sports today now available on the free Fire TV channels app all right uh a couple takeaways or actually before we get to that let’s talk about the fourth quarter so the Wolves built that 15-point lead I think

It was actually early fourth when the Wolves had the 15-point lead Portland pushed back it gets down below 10 or right around 10 and then uh yeah the wol led by 15 with just over five minutes to play and then there was a bit of a back

And forth it gets back down below 10 with four minutes to play after a Bandon three-pointer and then the Wolves go on a mini run connley knocks down a three with 122 left on the clock they go up 14 chony BBS calls a timeout I was

Surprised I was like hey man you’re down 14 with a minute 20 left like just let it just cool it right like let this thing finish out right out of the timeout Portland immediately gets and the Wolves even made a defensive substitution taking towns off the floor putting in McDaniels

Chris Murray gets an and one it goes from four this is with a minute 19 left now so 3 seconds later goes from a 14-point game to an 11-point game ant comes down with like eight seconds nine seconds still on the shot clock misses a tough Jumper in the lane for whatever

Reason he decides to take that shot then on the other end an commits a foul puts Anthony Simons at the line Simons killed the Wolves as he often does he hits a couple of free throws with the clock stop now it’s a nine-point game the Wolves burn most of the clock on their

Next possession but Conley misses a three the Blazers come down and knock down a three it’s now a six-point game with 30 seconds left in an that it’s an 80 run in 40 seconds I guess 50 seconds yeah like 52 seconds for the for the

Blazers an an 80 run to make a go from a 14-point game to a six-point game I’ll tell you what a six-point game with 30 seconds left I mean I always think back back to that Kings Wolves game in 2004 when Garnett hits a three Brad Miller misses

Two free throws Garnett hits another three and the game goes at overtime and the Wolves win a little different because the Wolves had the ball in this case but still um you know not great like six six points at 30 seconds left is not is far from insurmountable so the

Wolves end up calling a timeout after they get trapped I think Conley kind of got uh yeah that was when he got trapped on the Wolves side of the of the timeline and they could have called a travel could have called a push they should have called a push uh but instead

Finch gets a timeout which was a really smart timeout because it had wolves disaster collapse written all over it they get the ball in bounds a makes a couple of free throws and the game at that point was basically over but there was still this dumb back and forth at

The end and the Blazers Clos the game with a three-point play to make this thing a five-point game so I mean they were up again they were up 14 with a minute 20 left and they ended up winning by five the Blazers closed this game on

A 13 to four run if I’m not mistaken so not exactly the cleanest of finishes never really in doubt at least once the Wolves got that inbound with 23 seconds left after calling the timeout uh once they successfully in outed the ball but not a clean finish once again for

Minnesota and it’s still a pattern it just it just is at this point it’s obviously different than a legit close game late and a lack of execution on offense this was just like hey finish this thing off off like just put them away and they couldn’t do

It there at the end it was pretty frustrating overall after a weekend where the Wolves really struggled in transition defensively and they struggle with turnovers offensively which has been a recurring issue all year they only turned it over 11 times in this game which is a number like you can

Absolutely live with that for the season you know if you just look at turnovers per game they’re averaging just a shade under 15 so if you’re only going to turn over 11 times Chris F will take that every day of the week 11 turnovers for Minnesota and Portland managed just 16

Turnovers off those 11 excuse me 16 points off those 11 turnovers and overall the Wolves were only a minus eight in Fast Break points not good but remember they lost fast break points on Friday against the Kings 19 to nothing they lost them again on Sunday by a 19

To nothing margin a combined 38-0 in Fast Break points between the Friday and Sunday losses in this game they lost those fast break points 15 to7 and again just 16 points off 11 wolves turnovers for the Blazers so the Wolves did a much better job getting back in transition

There were still some issues crossmatching uh you know Conley got caught in a bad way under the basket a couple of times um at least one of those wasn’t even in transition but still some communication issues defensively and I like I just got done talking about how

The wolves have a have a historically impressive defense as of this point in the season but it’s funny how not not like haha funny but funny in a disappointing way how often there’s still some of these silly mistakes in transition especially in transition defensively related to communication and

Crossmatching and things like that um like they’ve just gota they’ve just gota just you know clean up some of that stuff right um overall the Wolves did a good job again avoiding the turnovers giving up only the 11 and only 15 fast break points you can you can live with that

Weirdly they were only a plus two on points in the paint they were actually a minus one in the glass what really saved the Wolves here was um and also I should say three-point percentage was very close as well like Portland got up a ton more threes that made him at effectively

The same clip the wolves wolves and Blazers are both hovering around 40% but the Wolves got to the line 37 times in this game Portland only got to the line 11 times in this game and actually I thought the officiating wasn’t very good I thought it was better uh the last

Couple times out even I know there were some bad misses especially late in that Clippers game game but like I actually think the officiating wasn’t very good in the Portland game but Minnesota still they out free throw them 37 to 11 in terms of attempts and you know

Portland’s not a good defensive team um they’re bottom five in terms of defensive free throw rate they do foul a ton they’re middle of the pack on offense getting to the line but outside of anern Simons there wasn’t anybody on this on the floor for Portland that’s ad

Dep at getting to the line and the Wolves did a pretty good job outside of carony towns who was in early foul trouble of avoiding any massive um you know parades to the free throw line for Portland I mean you go in terms of made free throws plus 20 at the line you

Better win the game and because Portland got up so many more threes and because they were so active on the glass the Wolves gave up 12 offensive rebounds that was a problem for stints in this game as well uh this thing was still you know ended up being close here at the

End uh because some of those areas were still kind of sloppy and I don’t know I just think just I useed the word discombobulated to describe the start of the Kings game last Friday I don’t know that that’s the right word here I you know stagnant

Comes to mind again um we’ll talk here in a minute about the veterans that played extremely well and they were really the ones passing and cutting that that kind of saved the day for the Wolves offensively in fact let’s do that next let’s talk about and this will kind

Of bleed into studs of Duds because overall the wolves non-stars and I guess you could say also I guess uh what McDaniels may be an exception there as well but overall they were carried by these quote unquote role players not quote unquote they are role players but

They were plus Rudy right like Rudy’s Rudy’s a star he’s not simply a role player but he’s a veteran right the Vets the role players They Carried the wolves in this game I want to break down those performances uh here next and that’s how we’ll close the show

Wolves were 14 and a half Point favorites on fuel coming into Monday’s game against Portland and I would have never as I said earlier never pick the Wolves to cover that um and I believe the money line was like it was something crazy it was like

It was over a thousand it was like 14 plus uh sorry minus 1400 or something for the Wolves to win straight up and of course they did and that would have been you know the I would have never recommended that based on those odds but uh that would have been the BET over

Cover in the 14 and a half if you really wanted to bet on the Wolves all that say no line yet of course for Thursday’s game a couple days in between there before the Wolves take on the Pacers on Thursday night um bet on all your favorite NBA players and teams with

Quick bets live same game parlays exclusive props and more just visit fanduel.com lockon and shoot your shot FanDuel official Sportsbook partner of the NBA all right the Timberwolves in this game were carried by their veterans and let’s start with Rudy Oar and we’ll go ahead and give him a stud while we’re at

It Rudy was fantastic in this game um very good on defense but he was phenomenal on offense and uh finished with 25 points on 10 shot attempts the only shot he missed was kind of like a push shot almost a semif floater from about 10 feet just inside the the free

Throw line that rimmed out it actually almost went down he was a perfect seven of seven at the free throw line Rudy was and overall it feels like he’s been shooting the ball better at the charity stripe here lately 25 and 16 three blocks one steel for Rudy goar he did have three

Turnovers he also fouled out at the end on a Ticky Tac uh type call um I believe that was the end one actually right at the with like a second left um at the very end of the game that I referenced earlier but led the wolves in minutes played once again with 39

Fantastic on the second night of a back-to-back after some rocky moments over the weekend including that Clippers game um which was disappointing after the Wolves manhandled the Clippers small ball lineup last time around but Daniel Ty gave him some problems on Sunday and and I thought Rudy responded really well

In this one now um like you know duop wath played fine and like there wasn’t a whole lot of size other than him for the Blazers so the matchup was obviously different but I thought Rudy was very good and I would say a big part of that was just simply

Being more aggressive like we saw him one of his turnovers was an offensive foul he got called for for lowering the shoulder and uh knocking into I think it was wreath um and he could have gotten called for that a couple times against the Clippers but I thought he was

Appropriately aggressive in this game just overpowering guys he had an early offensive rebound dunk uh on a putb early early in the game where the Wolves were really struggling offensively he did have five offensive rebounds mixed in there the Wolves had 12 as a team nobody else had more than two Rudy had

Five of them and again 16 overall rebounds I thought he was good defensively a couple of nice blocks um you know I I still think and we’re nitpicking here because the Wolves defense is incredible but there were a couple too many straight Lin drives to the rim and more of that’s on the

Perimeter contained like again Jane McDaniels primarily um lately at times Conley at times ant uh rarely nil Alexander Walker I feel like he’s been the best allaround wolves perimeter Defender here for the last several weeks but um I don’t want to blame Rudy for that but he’s a part of that unit and

There’s just a little bit too much of that but overall Rudy was fantastic especially on offense and and I we don’t say that very often right like um I refer the Simmons orillo podcast a little bit ago and um they talked about Rudy being an afterthought the Wolves

Offense and sometimes he is but I don’t know the dude LED them in scoring was tied for third and in shot attempts in this game uh of course some extenuating circumstances there as to why that would be the case but he can still score um and he’s been looking to be more

Aggressive against certain matchups here lately for the wolves in the paint and and that’s been really valuable for for Minnesota other veterans that played very well um Kyle Anderson I thought played very very well in this game nine points he did end up shooting just three of eight he had a

Couple shots Rim in and out he had five assists to just one turnover plus three rebounds one steal and one block did knock down a three in this game and that steel where he had a poke away at midcourt came down and got a dunk so

Three of his made of his three made field goals one was a dunk and one was a a three-pointer so good to see Kyle Anderson again look comfortable again look to um to be involved in more ways than just kind of being out there and being a ball mover um this was a

Well-rounded slowmo game and more similar to what we saw from him last year than what we saw you know pre- trade deadline this season I I think that was pretty clear I’m not say I’m not giving him a stud I’m just saying in terms of Veteran play and Monte mois

Same deal like this was another game where you look at his line you go ah he only shot two of eight he actually didn’t make any threes uh but he had seven assists to only one turnover tied for the team leading assist with Mike connley so take those veteran point

Guards they played a combined uh 48 minutes as you might expect I don’t know that they shared the floor together much if if at all in this game um and Morris and connley together had 14 assists and three turnovers the Monte Morris turnover he just had the ball taken from him right

After getting it on a off a defensive rebound just had it stripped from him and one of Conley’s turnovers was similar so some silly turnovers mixed in there but we’ll take the 14 to three assist to turnover Rao from the Wolves point guards any night of the week um

And then I would also throw Mike connley in in that conversation uh he was the second leading scorer after going scoreless against the Clippers another thing that Simmons talked about in the podcast being worried about the wolves and Mike Conley being so important well

He had 19 points in this game six of 13 shooting and only six of his 13 shots for threes which is unusual like 60% I think it is of Conley’s shot attempts this year have been three-point attempts as they should be but more than half of them in this game were actually

Twos and he got to the line five times made all five of his free throws seven assists two turnovers three steals a couple of rebounds for Conley uh a really good Mike game um so those veterans stepping up Carlon towns an early and often foul trouble finish with

Just 14 points on 12 shots and the late start to the game Herz his elbow in the middle stages is questionable to return before he comes back he had only 133 points on 10 shots um so those guys combined for just 27 Rudy has 25 Conley has 19 Kyle Anderson has nine Monte

Morris has seven assists Off the Bench um and then you could throw a Nas who I actually thought was fairly quiet but he was had 12 points five rebounds in this game made four three-pointers um I think I most of that damage was third quarter uh when the wolves are kind of keeping

Pace with Portland he ended up being a team best plus 16 overall in plus minus so a good NS game as well in terms of studs and Duds we talked about Rudy he gets a stud for this one Conley also gets a stud uh my third one it’s actually it’s kind of a

Tricky One Like You could argue Alexander Walker but he ended up only playing 21 minutes but he knocked down three threes I think I’m gonna go with Kyle Anderson for my third stud in this game after goar and Conley we already talked about him too but nine5 and three for slowmo um Duds

I don’t have any I mean Jade McDaniels was quiet and and I don’t think contributed all that much he was maybe uh the had the least in terms of contributions in this game Carlon towns You could argue the same um I thought that ant you know was good enough moving

The ball he clearly was was had made a conscious decision to move the ball in this game and to not try and take over offensively at least scoring the ball um which sometimes that switch flips right either he’s all attack all the time or he’s hey I’m not going to shoot or like

See how long I can go without shooting that’s basically what it felt like at times we just need to blend the two and sometimes we see it but we don’t quite see it enough yet if a wants to continue to level up and uh you know in this game

I thought he was effective as a distributor but um just not you know still seemed a little bit off in this one all right not a whole lot else to say about this one it was a it was a win there’s not a whole lot more like there’s no major negative takeaways no

Major positive takeaways but as we’ve discussed some of the issues that were issues against the Kings and Clippers the Wolves kind of red the ship there they got some nice contributions from the Vets like Rudy connley Kyle Anderson in this game um and now two days off or

I mean two days without a game one day completely off the Wolves I’m sure will do film Etc on Wednesday and then after that the Wolves head back out on the road have not been on the road since before the All-Star break they’re at Indiana on Thursday night at 6 PM

Central tip and then Friday night second night of a back-to-back the first of consecutive ESPN games 6:30 Friday night tip at Cleveland which would be a fun game two of the leagues the top two defensive teams in the league and then the Lakers Sunday night so a fun road

Trip and then after that it’s the Clippers and two against the Jazz so it’s difficult but it should be fun and as we know the wolves like to get up for these tough games they’ve played better on the road than a lot of teams um and hopefully will be fully healthy here

Come Thursday night we’ll have lots to talk about at Wednesday’s show Thursday we’ll preview the game against the Pacers we haven’t seen in a while so lots coming up here on the week uh or during the week on the show a big thank you for making lockdown wolves

It may not have been pretty, but the Minnesota Timberwolves bounced back from a winless weekend with a win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the victory, including strong performances from the Wolves’ veteran players as Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards both had uncharacteristically quiet showings. Plus, Rudy Gobert’s dominant double-double and the Wolves’ shaky close to the game.

After two of our stars were in the ASG and we got the media buzz for our game against Milwaukee they flexed to ESPN for coverage, dropping that game and setting a flat tone with everyone watching was such a Timberwolves moment. I know we'll recover but it went from our dominance to the Bucks resurgence.

And I know people don't consider us serious, but Denver lost round one in 2022 because of injuries. They went on to win the title next year. They're consistently in the hunt the few seasons. I believe we can be the same

  2. Good win but it’s concerning how this team play against teams above 500 hundred in a close game unless you a fan that happy to win fifty games we want more

  3.
