You want the news the magic are sitting in fourth in the Eastern Conference how they embraced grit to win and why we shouldn’t be celebrating quite yet there’s a lot of work to do here in the fourth quarter of the season but first let’s get to locked on

Today uh shout out to Steve Clifford as always um for for for our guy Cliff um but uh I always remember watching the 2009 team and and breaking those games down and being constantly amazed that they did not have to play their best to win games that they could make little

Mistakes here and there and still seemingly be in control and I don’t know if that’s like a sign that they’re like true contenders I’m not sitting here saying that this year’s team is a true Contender but it was always you know especially after a decade plus of not

Being around and and you know certainly not being basketball conscious you know I’m the same age as the team um not being basketball conscious enough to remember the details and the the day-to-day grind of the of the 95 and 96 team it it always struck me as that was a a a a

Hurdle that that team climbed over that that was something that made that team different they could win games even when they played like total garbage and look I’m going to get to this in the second segment I want to be positive today everyone’s happy the magic won they’re fourth in the Eastern

Conference let’s celebrate some things right now but the magic played like complete garbage for long chunks of this game against the Charlotte Hornets they have scored 101 points against one of the worst defensive teams in the league um there are a lot of things to be concerned about and larger trends that

The magic are going to have to clean up because as we’ve said on this pod numerous times as the players and the coaches have said we’re playing to a standard this stuff is not about um this is not about playing the Charlotte Hornets I don’t care about the

Charlotte Hornets no offense to our friends that locked on Hornets listen to them they do a great job covering the team we’re not playing the Charlotte hornin we’re playing how we’re going to need to play in the playoffs and so I’m going to get to why the magic came up

Short on that Mark uh and and the concerns that we have now that the stretch of easy Games quote unquote is getting ready to end we’ll get to what happened there but I do think it’s important also to note the magic still won all these games

Like why like like yes don’t we’re not unfurling banners we’re not hanging thanks from the rafters for winning these games but they’re still winning games at at the end of the day the magic still took care of their business and frankly did so comfortably and that’s a credit to the

Magic knowing exactly who they are the magic were sloppy and slow for a good chunk of the first half and yet they were always in control they were down by seven early but once they got back in the game at the end of the first quarter

The Hornets they took a brief lead in the third quarter like we’ll get to we’ll get to the struggles here in a minute you could tell I’m itching to talk about it um but the magic buckled down defensively they essentially decided Well if we’re gonna be terrible

On offense so are you and that to me is actually a skill to to go into a game knowing we don’t have it today or just just playing a game and the game playing out and it being we don’t have it today you know that that we’re not at our

Best and we’re just going to have to scratch and Claw and find a way what separates okay teams from great teams is this ability and and and I do draw that comparison directly to the 2009 to the 2010 team because that is something they were really good at they could have a

Bad shooting night they could have a mediocre offensive night and yeah they got Dwight Howard which makes everyone’s life easier but they would buckle down defensively they would shut other teams out until they figure their things out offensively and that’s what the magic did in this game like they played

Incredible defense they forced as many turnovers as they gave up they blocked shots they scrambled for loose balls they made this game incred incredibly ugly until their offense finally started to come around they hit enough shots to build the lead they got that lead out to

16 in the fourth quarter and it felt like a miracle it it really did feel like that the magic pulled one out you know pulled it out of their you know butts where whatever you want to say um it was ugly and there’s no such thing as an

Ugly win but it was ugly it wasn’t pretty to watch and it was Magic Basketball you know yeah yes there are things to clean up and you can tell I’m like champing at the bit to chomping at the bit to to to talk about those because because you know I’m I’m a

Problem Solver I want to I want to highlight problems here um not always in a negative way but but we’ll get to that the magic had to embrace this grit to win the magic had to find a way and credit to Charlotte their defensive game plan was really good and executed well

They walled up the paint they made they they took away any of the magic driving Lanes they dared the magic to shoot and Orlando obliged them with 35 three-pointers magic entering this game were 4 and 16 when they took 35 or more threes they’re now five and

16 it was an ugly ugly ugly basketball game and unfortunately for Charlotte Orlando was cool play in that and it’s a credit to the Magic’s poison composure that despite their frustrations despite their inability to score despite their turnovers despite all the mistakes they were making it didn’t affect them on the

Other end it didn’t stop them from playing defense they didn’t put their heads down yeah maybe they complained to the refs a little bit too much but they it didn’t put they didn’t put their heads down they got to work and the magic are going to make mistakes in the playoffs they’re going

To get into a playoff game that’s exactly like this game against the Hornets obviously against a better opponent no offense to Charlotte um you are your record says you are um they’re going to get into games exactly like this and those games are going to test

The same resolve the magic had to show to win this one and if Orlando can Embrace being ugly of having to find and scratch and Claw their way to a victory getting on the floor for loose balls creating blocks finding fast break points just finding little pockets to

Score create you know seeking those mismatches and finding them overcoming their mistakes they’re going to have to do all of this when they get into a playoff series they are and this was a game that showed us they can do it and as I say during summer league when you know when we

Don’t necessarily believe everything we’re seeing it’s better to know a team can do something than they can’t and the magic throughout this stretch against losing teams that they’ve had since the All-Star break have Contin proven they have the resolve they have the medal they have the composure they have the

Maturity to do what it takes to win no matter what the game is calling for and that is something to be proud of that is something to build on that is something that will carry over into the playoffs of course why do you need that against the Charlotte Hornets the

Make this my lead make this my main story and then as I thought about it because we are dealing with some history I should have probably mentioned at this top of the show The Magic are sitting in fourth in the Eastern Conference the the prophecy of of our uh of our uh shoot

I’m forgetting the name of the guy from uh from Dune now from from Lisa alib Marquel folz has come true the magic are sitting in the four seed here as we turn toward the fourth quarter of the season the final 20 games of the year um I

Actually have the final 20 games now almost completely memorized the pieces of the schedule are there um eight I haven’t memorized the full eight game home I know the teams but I don’t have the dates and and things but that’s that’s that’s me that’s a me thing um

The magic are now 10 games over 500 as well for the first time since April 2012 Dwight was already out at that point um but literally they have the best record they’ve had since Dwight Howard left it’s it it feels it feels very cathartic and I know

I’ve referenced the 2019 M weing my 2009 Eastern Conference Championship shirt for those who are not watching on the YouTube channel um it feels gartic to know that we’re at that stage and I I bring that comparison up to compare this team to a a very key

Characteristic of what made that team a championship level team and again I’m not here sitting and saying the magic are Championship level team because they very clearly have a lot of mistakes to figure to figure out teams like the Detroit Pistons like the Utah Jazz like the Charlotte Hornets even the Brooklyn

Nets give a very wide margin for error they allow you to make a lot of mistakes and that is frankly what happened in this game why why did the magic have to show this grit and prove to us that they can win any game well I mean again I credit Charlotte’s defense

A lot Charlotte had a very strong defensive game plan they executed it well and the magic just kind of said okay you want to play some defense you know you think that’s defense we’ll show you some defense and they they you know minus a few stretches here and there

They did that they shut down Charlotte they made Charlotte’s life really Miser miserable uh it was their 10th game this season holding a team under a point per possession I believe charlot was at like a 97 uh offensive rating like Mattis defense was really really good but this

Is the thing they’re not gonna be facing Charlotte they’re not gonna be facing Detroit Utah’s offense is really good the job that magic did defensively on Utah the job magic did on Brooklyn defensively like the defense is real magic are playing some very very good defense right now and it is bailing them

Out but the kind of self-inflicted mistakes to are making right now against Bad teams is going to haunt them in the playoffs and again what we’re doing here is we are not playing the opponent we’re not playing the Washington Wizards the Charlotte hortens the Detroit Pistons we’re not playing them we’re playing the

Playoff standard we’re playing and trying to get to a level that will win playoff games that will win playoff series and I’ll tell you this if the magic play offense defense was good if the magic play offense the way they played against Charlotte the way that they made mistakes against Detroit the

Mistakes that they made against Utah and Brooklyn if they play that way they are going to lose a playoff series not only they G lose a playoff series let me just get it to a graner thing they’re going to lose a playoff game that they should

Win a 2-2 series becomes a 3-1 series that is a very different thing and I don’t think the I think the thing that this team doesn’t realize and and potentially cannot realize until it happens to them the margin for error in the playoffs does not exist if you make

A mistake you lose and you lose big and I don’t think this team understands that because they’re certainly not playing like it this game was just frankly sloppy uh it was and the ref didn’t play physical the magic defense did its job like this was not a bad defensive game

I’m not throwing the defense under the bus this game though was sloppy Orlando’s spacing was terrible their energy was low they they they looked lost out there and again I I credit Charlotte’s defense a lot they did a great job clogging the paint daring to magico Magic made 13 to 35 threes they

Made 37.1% of the threes that wasn’t the issue um but they did a great job shutting Orlando out of the paint Orlando scored only 42 points in the paint 21 for 30 shooting that’s again first thing I look at in the Box Score usually with the magic is points in the

Paint 42 points in the paint is very low the team average is about 52 53 points in the paint per game again credit to Orlando’s defense they only give up 30 they won the paint you win the paint you win the game that’s that’s that’s the motto but Orlando had 18 turnovers in

This game including 12 in the first half and these were not turnovers that Charlotte was forcing with like ball pressure or anything it wasn’t like the play where J where wendo Carter ripped the ball from Brandon Miller off a trap and the ball squirted out to Jaylen

Suggs for him to get a run out dunk and an in one these were turnovers where the magic were not catching the ball cleanly were throwing the ball across crosscourt when a simple pass was needed um when they were late making a read these were lethargic these were unfocused

Passes and my issue with this game is the magic won their defense was great my issue with this game was more that Orlando did not execute they did not play well they beat themselves and all and and I’m not even getting into making eight of 15 free

Throws let’s just focus on the turnovers then since the allar break Orlando is second has the second worst turnover rate in the league they didn’t get to 20 turnovers this game but they have two games with 20 turnovers and yes they are seven and one so they’re able to peeper

Over this but so much of that is they’re playing bad teams they’re playing Detroit again no offense to these teams but you play those teams you can make mistakes because they’re going to make mistakes right back at you Orlando scored 18 turnovers Charlotte only scored 10 points off those turnovers

Charlotte had 19 turnovers Orlando scored 23 game the magic won by 12 they outscore the Hornets with the same number of turnovers by 13 points that was the game the magic made Charlotte pay for their mistakes Charlotte didn’t make Orlando pay for theirs that was the game and again credit to Orlando’s

Defense that’s a big part of this and a lot of them were dead ball turnovers um you the magic did a good job getting back did a good job challenging I don’t think Charlotte had any fast break points in this game uh yeah zero fast break points only three attempts like

Orlando did a good job defensively like their defense made up for these mistakes but you’re playing Philadelphia in a first round series Tyre Maxi is taking that ball and going down the court and scoring on you before you can think you’re playing you know New York they

Spread the floor out you know when they’re healthy they spread the floor out so well they’re banging a three on you off off a turnover and off a mistake you’re playing Miami I don’t need to say say much more about that at the end of the day since the All-Star break because the

Only team with the winning record Orlando’s played since the All-Star break was that first game against Cleveland and the first game after the allstar break is always a little screwy um at the end of the day Orlando is feasting on these teams and these teams are not making Orlando pay for their

Miscues even Atlanta like Atlanta did a little bit um but that game really came down to Orlando couldn’t hit shots and now was understandable on the back toback um the magic have to be better and you know they talk about playing to a standard and and I think in a lot of

Ways the magic have played to a playoff standard I I think in a lot of ways we are seeing this team blossom into a playoff team and I want to highlight and I highlighted that I want to highlight that I want to note that I want to say

That this magic team is looking more playoff ready by the day but we know there are tougher challenges I’m not looking past Washington on Wednesday I think that I think this game Wednesday against Washington is going to be really tough back-to-back against a fast-paced team that could score a lot of points they’re

On a long losing streak they just came back from a West Coast trip which you know you know that first game back from West Coast strip’s always kind of weird too this is a you know there’s there’s a chance that magic could be that team you

Know I’m not going to be upset about it but it could it could happen because the magic are really bad especially on defense on the second night of back Tob backs Wednesday’s game is gon be a game where the magic have to show their grit

It also has to be a game where the magic don’t make these kinds of self-inflicted mistakes and again you might be able to get away with it a little bit against Washington because they will make mistakes they’re gon to they’re going to fall they’re going to hurt them they’re

Going to help you help help yourself but even an injured New York team Indiana on Sunday when they get to that eight game home stand and they play some of the tough teams that they got on that AME homestand there are real challenges ahead and the magic have to get ready

For the playoffs and it starts with the things they can control turnovers free throws defending without fouling these are all things the manic have struggled with this season and now is the time to stop it now is the time to lock in you gotta be yourself obviously but lock

In and fix these mistakes fix these miscues because pretty soon these G these things you’re not gonna be able to get away with and it’s going to cost you the Ultimate Prize and and if you can learn that lesson in a win against Charlotte great please learn that lesson

I I don’t want it to cost you a game in the regular season certainly not in the playoffs you need to learn that lesson um but the magic again for the most part have found ways around it that margin for error is about to shrink a

Little bit as we get closer and closer to the playoffs we’ll go through the final box score talk about some individual performances we’ll get to that coming up here in just a moment but first today’s episode of lock on Magic is brought to you by our

Orlando Magic have held an opponent under 100 points per 100 100 possessions they did so only five times last year if I counted correctly I don’t math very well so maybe I didn’t but um it’s it’s an impressive feed especially with the NBA having one of the most efficient

Offenses in league history this year just overall um it’s it’s impressive I believe they have three games since the All-Star break three there are seven games they’ve held an opponent under 100 points and at this point holding teams under 110 is impressive um so a lot of

Credit to the Magic’s defense and I want to start there 19 turnovers for 23 points no fast break points allowed uh only seven Second Chance points only 30 points in the paint they give a 45.8% shooting 12 for 33 from uh beyond the Beyond The Arc Charlotte does make 11 of

11 free throws but only 11 free throws is a really strong defensive effort they made sure Charlotte did not have easy offense throughout and yes you know they played only an eight-man rotation so very very limited group they got 21 points from vasilia MIT they got 18

Points from Trey man 18 points from a very impressive Brandon Miller I have to say I was very very impressed with him and then 14 Off the Bench from the hot shooting Davis brons but you know they just did not have enough Firepower to stay in this game they needed to mck

This game up uh and and the magic were like cool like let’s let’s do it let’s let’s have a really ugly game and you know I think Orlando was frustrated a little bit with their shot making and their turnovers especially but they never let that affect F their defense

For the most part um you know they really stayed engaged and locked in uh overall like Orlando just won their minutes you know poo banero leads the way 22 points nine for 19 shooting two for five from three two for two from the foulon again just tells you how physical

And how little you know kind of action there was in the paint in this game that they got to the line so few times uh five rebounds three assists he did have five turnovers in fact nine of the Magic’s 18 turnovers came from poo banero and France and so to some extent

You can live with that a lot of Paulo’s turnovers were trying to make cross score passes like he’s trying to make the right play so you’re not so angry at them but again they’re just they’re not the right play you know you want to make the simple pass the simple play the

Simple read and all the time it just felt like the entire magic team was trying to make the Home Run play they were trying to just do a little bit too much and that caught them in mistakes uh throughout the game but give Paulo this he got downhill when he needed to get

Downhill in the magic needed a basket they gave the ball to Pao and Paulo made sure that they got a good shot and made sure they he got to the basket got to the rim and finished like there are just so many times when Charlotte was making

A push you know made a couple threes and Pao just made a play that just like you know kind of halted the momentum and made those shots that you know just kind of like little things that aren’t going to show up on a highlight sheet um but

Just the plays that just stem the tide and keep everyone cool and calm in a game that that was really D jointed and and didn’t have a lot of rhythm for either side France vager had only eight points he had four turnovers a lot of his turnovers came from Charlotte

Knocking the ball away from him on drives he really really really really struggled uh getting downhill and uh uh and getting to the basket uh just a lot of shot attempts where you know the ball was just knocked out of his hands like just just really really weird stuff I

Thought Charlotte did a really again Charlotte’s defensive game plan was really great Steve cord had a great game plan they did a really good job showing their hands being physical knocking the ball away from guys just kind of being in in in their face a little bit Orlando

I think was taken a little bit of back by it I don’t think they I think they were you know I hate to say this I I think they were expecting Cakewalk I think they were expecting Charlotte to not roll over but to be easy to break down defensively and when Charlotte

Played the level of defense that they played I think it caught them a little bit by surprise um you know again it was just a much more physical game than I think Orlando was anticipating and you know they hadn’t seen Charlotte in a while they get Charlotte two more times

Here in the next mon uh you know so so we’ll we’ll I’m sure they will adjust I’m sure they’ll be better prepared for it the next time around again fron just couldn’t get himself going four for 11 shooting over five from three you know he had a three taken off because of an

Offensive foul you know he had an angry dunk that was the highlight of his game uh but just just couldn’t get himself going and really no one else in the starting lineup got themselves going it was just a weird game Jaylen Suggs was in foul trouble all game four points for

Him Gary Harris had nine points two for two from three magic continue have a great record when Gary Harris makes at least two threes in the game and so this game was really saved by the bench like like the bench was bad on Sunday against Detroit the bench was the one that

Reasserted the lead in the first quarter and the one that expanded the lead in the fourth quarter Cole Anthony led the way with 14 points five for 11 shooting two for eight from three just really took over in the fourth quarter just made shot after shot after shot got to

The basket just just made plays that that gave the magic some cushion and helped expand that lead made a couple shots late in the third quarter actually too to to really push the lead out as well Mo Vagner and Jonathan Isaac each with 11 Jonathan Isaac with four four

For four shooting six rebounds a really active and great game from him had just had two stocks his steal led to a breakaway dunk he was just active around the basket made made his threes just made his three he only took one three but a really great game and then Mo

Vagner you know just I I don’t think I need to describe his game just great rolling to the basket just always present made some great plays and you know I got to shout out Joe Engles as well eight assists in the game um only took one shot it was a rush three but

Eight assists he really helped move the ball uh you know eight of the Magics 23 assists they did not you know have a great passing game 23 assists on 40 field goal makes um it was a rough destroyed offensive game so to have Engles being able to move the ball

Really helped that bench unit and finally Anthony black 10 points three for five shooting three for four from Beyond The Arc his three-point shooting is really reliable now like like you feel confident that he’s going to make shots uh you know if he’s going to pull

The trigger on a shot you feel very confident that it’s going in and a credit to him and it deserves a lot more attention and I hope I’ll be able to have the time to give it some attention here um because you know with Markel it’s likely playing on Wednesday he’s

Probably going to go back to a bench rough Gary Harris is probably gonna miss Wednesday’s game so we might see some Anthony black um ab ab was really really good in this game Orlando shoots 54.1% from Flor so again a game where the magic shoot very well 13 for 35 from

Three which isn’t terrible 37.1% there um like I said Orlando gets their fifth win of the season five and 16 in games where they shoot 35 or more threes so it’s usually a bad sign that they shoot so many threes especially in a game that was played as slow as this one but

Orlando’s able to get away with it get the win 18 turnovers but that leads to only 10 points for the Hornets Charlotte shoots 45.8% from floor 36.4% from three 19 turnovers for 23 points like I said that’s the difference in the game Orlando made Charlotte pay for their

Mistakes Charlotte did not make Orlando pay for their mistakes that that is the complete difference in this game the Orlando Magic defeat the Charlotte Hornets one 101 to 89 the magic back in action on Wednesday they head to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Wizards of a complete recap

The Orlando Magic had to gut it out for a win over the Charlotte Hornets. That statement is both a testament to how much the team has grown and how it can find a way to win without their best stuff. It is also a cause for concern as the challenges look to get tougher ahead in their playoff push.
