Miami was taking on the Pistons on Tuesday night and it was a sluggish physical back and forth game that came down to the wire but it was Jimmy Butler’s fourth quarter heroic scoring 15 of his team High 26 points that helped seal the deal they he have now

Down the stretch including seven points in the final 53 seconds to get the win we’re going to hand out our credit cookies we’re going to get to the Patty Mill signing later on but first David what was your takeaway from this one you know I can’t disregard the loss because

The Pistons have been playing better since the All-Star break they got robbed of a a win against the New York Knicks and since then it’s kind of lit a fire and they’ve been competitive I mean Miami hands can probably remember the first game of the season the season

Opener against the Pistons they played Miami very tightly then that was before obviously the All-Star break but since then they’ve still been competitive and Miami looked a little out of sorts and I don’t think it was necessarily anything that Detroit did defensively they started off hot Miami did they got some

Great scoring from Duncan Robinson early on he was pretty consistently good uh especially down the stretch when he hadit a big shot in the fourth quarter but they also wer getting nearly enough production I think from their two stars babo and Jimmy Butler were both kind of

Sluggish to start off and not until Miami until Jimmy went off in the fourth quarter that kind of sort of even out but both of them were taking a somewhat passive approach and they were just able to do just enough to be able to hang with the Pistons they maintained a slim

Lead throughout the Pistons actually wind up taking a lead late in the game and then Miami late in the fourth quarter wind up pulling ahead and getting the win it’s a win it doesn’t really matter against what opponent I know Celtics fans will probably be in our mentions and comments saying oh they

Beat the Pistons how can they consider themselves contenders y y y it doesn’t matter it’s a win the Pistons have been competitive for most of the Season especially since their incredibly long all yeah yeah especially since the allstar break so I I think it’s still a

Good win overall and Miami was able to get some good production out of guys like Caleb Martin who continues to round into great form um you know niiko yovic showing some fire getting ejected uh not expecting that and and then you know that they just kind of turned the game

Over to Jimmy late and he wanted up saying oh yeah that’s right I am a superstar I can take over games and it is the Detroit Pistons and he wind up having his big night it felt like the heat missed some of the injured players that they’ve had um

Over love the arena stuff um it feels like the heat missed some of the injured players that they’ve been missing uh no Kevin Love as the backup center a lot of Orlando Robinson minutes and Thomas Bryant minutes I can’t say that even a second of those minutes were productive

And it felt like the Pistons really were able to make their runs or keep it close in those minutes hey with high Smith sort of an up and down 11 and a half minutes you just wonder like okay if Tyler hero Josh Richardson and Kevin Love were healthy how many of these guys

Are really playing um so I I I think that might be part of it too but look you mentioned Caleb Martin it was a great game for him he’s starting to round into form like you said um to me the takeaway here is just it’s Jimmy Butler you know like we we could

Complain about the fact that it’s close uh against the Pistons probably was a little bit closer than you said they have been way more competitive since the All-Star break I think that is worth mentioning and it’s a good point that you make but um you know it’s not about like is this win

Close or is this win a blowout when you’re playing a team like the Pistons you’re not going to prove anything to the Pistons what are you going to do you’re going to you’re going to beat the Pistons by 20 points is anybody going to think of you differently no they’re the

Pistons they stink like you beat them by 20 points or eight points it doesn’t really matter you’re not proving anything the point at this stage in the season is stack the wins and get yourself into a better playoff positioning here and with this win the

The heat improv to 35 and 26 they’ve won 11 of their last 13 games um the the magic beat the Hornets tonight so they’re 36 and 26 the Knicks lost to the Hawks tonight so they fall the needs the Nets beat the Sixers tonight so the

Sixers are also 36 and 26 that means that the heat are a half game back of the number four seed so if we want to have a real conversation about what this win really means it’s that they’re half a game within the four seed in the Eastern Conference as this team

Continues to play its best stretch of basketball and a big part of the reason why Miami is playing this way is what Jimmy Butler showed you in the fourth quarter I thought it was a uh it it wasn’t a great first half by Jimmy Butler he probably thought hey it’s the

Pistons this team stinks somebody else will win this game for us and then nobody did he had seven points in the first half and he had a huge second half he ends up with 26 points in the game 15 points in that fourth quarter hitting clutch shot after clutch shot did hit

His three-pointer 21 seconds left got the three-pointer streak is up to 15 games in a row now uh and that was the difference in the game and when Jimmy Butler can just turn it on I don’t care who the opponent is but when he could

Just turn it on like that and say you know what I’m not going to lose this game the heat are really tough to beat yeah no that’s entirely Fair um I I I fault the the performance from Jimmy a little bit because he was being a little

Passive but maybe that kind of mindset of you know what he saw Duncan go off in the first quarter he saw Caleb go off in the second quarter and they were holding a lead at that point so maybe he didn’t feel the need to kind of take over the

Game that’s a good bam kind of had his hands full a little bit uh trying to keep Jaylen Duran off the glass you know and he wasn’t particularly aggressive for all of Duran’s faults at 20 years old I still believe that kid’s gonna be

A star at some point like he is so he’s awesome he he is so young such a great rebounder so physical such a smart player too at 20 and you know he gets into foul trouble because he’s still just tying it all together like this is

It’s like you know I’m a comic book fan obviously this is like one of those characters like you know Captain Marvel it’s like a kid with all these superpowers like how do you kind of how do you figure it all out right and that’s where he is at right now so but

That I blacked out when you started talking about Marvel but no to no but to your point with the Pistons though like they have a lot of players that I like you know Jaylen Duran assar Thompson I like Kade Cunningham I really like Jaden iy and he’s starting to come along

Lately too they’ve got uh Simone fio that they got at the trade deadline from Utah and he was a problem induct him into the random scrub heat killer Hall of Fame here future Heat player I’m telling you they’re going to circle the wagons on that guy in six or seven years

Prime maybe the perfect fit next to Bab bio you know like go get him go get him before next trade deadline uh no they they’ve got a bunch of players that I like and I say and I the only reason I point that out is because this team on

Paper feels like it should be better and but and and you’re right when you point out that this team is competitive so Heat fans don’t overreact so much on the narrow win but more on hey the heat got the win when Jimmy Butler wanted to take

This game over he did and there wasn’t all that much interference he had he got to that spin move in the fourth quarter going Baseline he got to that when when a statue if a statue is ever built of Jimmy Butler it’s going to be him hitting that leaner over a Defender

Three feet away from the basket with his right with his right arm it’s not a pretty shot it doesn’t look good but man is it powerful and man is at work almost every time he hit one of those he got the three-pointer with 21 seconds left

Like the guy just took over Jimmy Butler also went 11 for 12 from the free throw line uh eight assists in this game six ass six in the fourth quarter so a great game overall uh for Jimmy Butler um I I got should we just go right into the

Now it’s another Heat win which means it’s time for the tastiest segment of locked on heat let’s get into the kitchen and whip up some credit cookies David who’s getting cookies tonight well we talked about Jimmy Butler earlier so we’ll start with him he gets two credit

Cookies on the night you know the up and down performance but he turned it on late when it mattered most and it’s Jimmy Butler so of course he gets credit for Miami’s win I also gave two credit cookies to Duncan Robinson who continues to impress with his incredible ball

Handling skills and yeah the occasional three-point shot some defense as well getting a nice block shot early in the game uh I also have Terry air who I think might might have had one of his best offensive games in a heat uniform he was really efficient from the floor

The shot seems to be much more comfortable I think he’s really growing into his role and there’s an understanding there he also had a couple big plays late so he gets two credit cookies that’s six total so far and I got one for bamayo who again was not as

Overwhelming a scorer as you would have liked but he had a big overall game and Caleb Martin who had an incredible second quarter I think 15 points in that period and he was really a difference Baker there when Miami was kind of trying to figure out their footing so he

Gets one to round out the 10 credit cookies on the night Caleb Martin was three for six from three-point range tonight that was the big take away for me from Caleb Martin bam metab bio’s defense I thought was incredible all night I mean him ping ponging from uh

Going up to the level of the screen Miami started switching a little bit late in that fourth quarter to try to flatten out Detroit’s defense we haven’t seen a ton of switching from Miami most of the season it’s been mostly a drop defense um but bam getting out there

Guarding guys like Cade and whoever else was on the perimeter and then darting back to make sure that there was a body on Jaylen Duran especially when that ball would go up make sure he wasn’t getting beat for those rebounds the way that Thomas Bryant and Orlando Robinson

Were basically all night and so I thought it was a phenomenal bam out of Bio defensive game one of the underrated kind of subdued no big highlights did even have a block in this game I don’t think he did uh he had one block shot

And I don’t even remember it but uh he got credited for one block might have been one of those like swipe down blocks that you don’t really see just happen you did get a couple block a great defensive game Thomas Bryan let’s shout out Thomas like one was a go that he got

Away with whatever you know according to Cil of L locked on Pistons it was basically all body anyway it wasn’t much of a block but you know what are you gonna do like it’s good for Thomas Bryant you got two blocks and you’re still a minus two in your five minutes

Um it was it was ugly man all right let’s let’s move on to Duncan Robinson we got to spend some time on him uh a sensational game from Duncan Robinson 18 points four assists he scored those 18 points on six of 11 shooting four of nine from three-point range he had just

A few plays though let’s just go it test screw the box score David like his I know we keep talking about this but there are times where it now it’s still surprising to watch him do what he does when he puts the ball on the ground he had a play the big one

Right uh where he it was basically the Schmitty that he that he pulled against uh wemi earlier in the season in San Antonio he did it again on the other side of the floor tonight where he kind of fakes going in comes back out fakes going out and then does go back in

Baseline and finishes with uh and finishes with the layup there Eric spoler and Duncan Robinson both pointing out it was a little bit different than the one that he had against Victor web andama because I I guess the difference was he went through the legs on this one

Which he say he couldn’t do that going the other direction you did maybe you didn’t see it by benefit of the replay but he actually had his back to assar Thompson went dribbled behind his back and then dribble it through his legs to cross the over quickly and then had the

Ball in his right hand so he went right to left so quickly as he was spinning around wind up having the ball and then finished with a reverse layup that was ridiculous like that’s that’s a really skilled basketball play and and I know we’re kind of like oh it’s suck at

Robinson white guy shooter he didn’t have that in his repertoire in his bag but that was really now he do when did it where did it come from Eric I asked Eric sper about this after the game and I was like are you surprised when you face cuz that’s surprising all right

That’s surprising based on where dun Robinson was and he goes look we see him day in and day out put in the work Eric SPO SPO him SPO him spos him right but he’s like and he works on it constantly with our assistant coaches but SPO added

I never saw him work on that with our coaches so I don’t know where that one came from he seemed legitimately amused by that Duncan Robinson shot and he even said he was like yeah it was really similar to the one that he did in San

Antonio earlier but that one was just an advanced level uh and that wasn’t just the only one that was not the only one he had a play where he got uh the defense on his hip then went Baseline held his Defender and then dropped it off to Bam uh as bam rolled

To the into the paint for the for for the layup I thought that was extremely skilled and a smart a high basketball IQ play he didn’t score on it obviously but he got bam the bucket he drove on Cade on another play held him off with his

Left arm and then finished over Jaylen Duran went high off the glass with a touch layup on there I thought that was an incredible shot he had a lob to Bam uh late uh after the heat fell behind to start the third quarter um like off the

Fast break and then uh and then to just not a finish for Duncan Robinson but he had a huge three-pointer with two minutes left to help the he go up 111 to 105 to keep just keep Detroit at Arms distance yeah it was probably the biggest shot of the game at that point

Until Terry Rosier made the biggest shots of the game and then Jimmy Butler made the biggest shots of the game and a block as a helps side Defender and I can’t recall exactly who the block was it was early in the game but it was a nice addition again like you don’t

Expect it like you know if for all the conversations we’ve had and we’ve had several about Duncan whether or not he should be starting or coming off the bench and we’re talking about the versatility and everything he’s shown he is no longer I think a a negative

Defender like I think he can hold his own at the very least and as a help Defender he’s always been somewhat underrated I know you and I have talked about this before I don’t know if our fans necessarily agree but I think he’s always been a pretty decent help your

Job to convince him David yeah and I think we saw that tonight when he came over weak side helped there and then all of a sudden you know he just gets the SWAT after is something there’s something to be said about the fact that he’s 6768 like size yeah you know at

Some point it it just matters a little bit where the other options are you know 6’2 Terry Rosier 6′ fiveish tyo hero with a negative wingspan and like when when the guy’s just 68 out there there’s something to be said about it and it does provide some sort of Advantage um I

I don’t know we don’t have we’ve already done the Duncan Tyler hero who should start thing but I I I’m floored by how much that he has improved uh this season so uh moving off of Duncan robins and Tera Rosier uh huge buckets in the fourth quarter before

Jimmy Butler had the even bigger buckets later on in the game had a layup in that fourth quarter had an assist to Duncan um for a three for that three-pointer that I mentioned that that came off a Terry Rosier assist uh and that was what helped Miami extend that lead uh to six

With two minutes left so a really great game from Terry Rosier you mentioned that it might be the the best offensive game he’s had why did you say that because he was more efficient I think you know seven of 17 on the floor three of six from three-point range and

Consistent and he looked comfortable in that role as a catch and shoot guy we’ve talked about the off ball role a little bit learning how to kind of play his game u in the Miami system and playing off of Jimmy Butler playing off of Duncan Etc and I think he was much more

Comfortable at least that’s the way he looked to me tonight and he was finding his spots and he was getting there comfortably like he just he wasn’t trying to force it he had a turnover late in the game was kind of a a misdirection there between him and

Duncan but overall I think it was a solid shooting game and then the seven assists like again you know this is this is really impressive you Jimmy had eight to lead the team but hit seven assists from Terry Rosier that’s great production and you also get four from Duncan Robinson like consistently I’m

Figure out some two-man game with bam out of Bio Miami just spamming that pick and roll with bam against Detroit basically all night whether Jaylen Duran was on the floor if it was James wisman or Isaiah Stewart or whoever they were going against they were spamming that

Maybe more pick and roll I haven’t seen the numbers off of like Synergy or whatever I would have to ask like Cooper Morehead for the stats on this but like maybe more pick and roll than they’ve run in any game this year it just felt like it was every single play down until

It was basically Jimmy Butler time late in the game um you gave a credit cookie to nicovic right I did not I it was a shout out I know I shout I threaten to do so via text during the game itself because I did like I did like that fire

And and just you know provide backgr for anybody who who didn’t watch the game like he picked up up a tech early I guess no in the first half uh right at the almost at the end of the first half uh nobody kind of thought much of it and

Then late and like Midway through the third quarter like he’s defending Isaiah Stewart and you and I had talked about you know are they comfortable with Nico as a starter is he gonna is he play big enough to be considered a big at this point and and you know he he was there

There against Isaiah Stewart who’s a little undersized but clearly a very physical guy just asked Drew eucks and you know uh Stuart was you know being very physical like bodying up against uh Nico Nico held his own on one possession and then as he was regrouping Stuart

Kind of just flung him to the ground Nico got back up the ball was out to Kade I think who dumped it off to Stuart and then there was a foul call on Nico but it wasn’t really a foul call and then yovic just turns around and lets

The ref have it you could see him screaming at the ref and whatever com combination of Serbian English you know epithet that he threw his Duncan trying to hold him back because he know he knew that Nico already had the one Tech yeah but that that’s hey play by Duncan but

Also I think like oh my God this guy he’s really angry like I better calm him down he prob he must have dropped an fbom I don’t at the very least like I can’t yeah he might have been drawing a little bit too before you never really

Know how it goes with between a player and an official but uh spoler was as it was a quick whist no it was and SPO even said like you’re allowed one emotional Outburst per game I thought we all agreed on that and so it was a little

Bit of quick whistle but spose said I like the fire he’s okay with it yeah B bam made ban made a joke after the game he was like you know he’s starting to lose some money here after the suspension and the the injection here but it’s a fire

And I like it he he has to stay in the game I’d prefer that he stay on the court for Miami especially in a game where the other big men outside of batat Bio were not playing very well but uh overall I like the fire that he’s

Playing with because I think it also is backed up by the confidence that he’s playing with too yes I like that point very good at the same time you see a lot of young European guys they kind of get punked in the NBA a little bit we saw

This with Luca like you know Luca as he was a professional and a high draft pick and an incredible score Elite and everything else like that but he was getting punked a little bit in his first couple seasons and at 20 years old Nico is still obviously very young and and I

Think there was you know there’s still some maturation process some understanding of the NBA game but he’s shown a lot of competitive Spirit now that he’s got the experience the starting you know job and again the confidence as you pointed out I think it’s been really helpful towards him so

I I would expect him to be a part of the rotation moving forward and he might even have a couple of big moments in the playoffs you never know look I like the pace from him he’s grabbing those rebounds and he just ignites the offense he’s not waiting he’s not looking around

Rebound go baby that’s all he does and it’s really exciting to see TBD if he’ll be in the playoff rotation I still think the heater figuring that part of it out but you’re right he adds something that nobody else on this roster adds and in terms of grabbing the ball off the rim

And going and SPO loves that he wants the heat to play with more pace and yovic pushes the pace more than anybody else on this team and so he’s doing the things that he needs to do to stay on the floor other than yelling at officials when those officials take him

Surprised I thought their their quote unquote big move was dlon Wright like uh we didn’t necessarily expect that one coming I think it was uh right on the break of the allstar game yeah and they added Delon Wright and obviously that one made a lot more sense but then all

Of a sudden you don’t see Delon playing you see Tyler herro hurt and missing more consistent time and Drew Smith obviously not going to be a factor this season because he’s going to be nursing that injury even though he was he’s in recovery at this point but he’s just not

Gonna be playing for Miami this year so they took a chance and I I on paper I don’t think it’s necessarily gonna be a huge Factor like I don’t see Patty playing a lot he didn’t play a lot in Atlanta he’s definitely towards the tail

End of his career but a lot of people could have made that argument about Kevin Love and we’ve been talking all season long about what a vital component Kevin is not just the locker room but as an actual onc Court producer and what he does uh for this team especially in

Terms of like greasing the wheels on offense and and so I don’t know if Patty’s gonna have as large a role and I think we can get into why they added Patty and why dlon isn’t playing I think that’s a certainly a question worth exploring but just in terms of adding a

Veteran adding a guy who is comfortable whether he has a role clearly defined or not just a guy who is a very positive presence like he’s been with the San Antonio Spurs he’s played alongside Tim Duncan he knows pop he knows he knows yeah he’s that he was a lifer there and

Then since then he’s played with the Brooklyn Nets and he went through all the crap of the turmoil there with Steve Nash and Kyrie Irving and you know missing time James Harden the injury he didn’t say anything he was a great steady presence he just played his game

And did what he had to and now obviously again towards the tail end of his career he’s in Atlanta not getting much playing time behind de jante Murray and and Trey young so you know he’s just looking for an opportunity to to call the end of his

Career in his way at least this is what I’m expecting and he plays for a team like Miami or he joins a team like Miami that has a history of getting the most set of veterans getting them to kind of reignite a fire and as Terry Rosier said

As Kevin Love has said you’re playing for something you come to an organization with a clear defined structure a coach that knows how to communicate clearly and Eric spola and it can help you maximize whatever role it is you have and it makes it makes a

Lot of sense so overall I love the move I just don’t know yet how productive he’ll actually be in a heat uniform but I don’t even know if that matters necessarily I don’t expect him to play very much at all I don’t think that that was the point uh he basically takes the

Spot of Drew Smith who is not playing with a guy who at least is able to play for you because he’s not recovering from a season ending knee surgery and he if you’re looking at point guards available and If Miami kind of went into this week

And these days saying you know what we’d feel a little bit more comfortable if we added just a one more ball handler just a break glass in case of emergency kind of guy that and we could just use that 15th spot that’s otherwise being for

Lack of a better term wasted on a guy who’s out for the year then we feel a little bit more comfortable with our situation going into the playoffs because he’s not going to play if this team is healthy he’s not going to play even right now when this team is not

Healthy but they’re like one more injury away maybe two from him playing and stuff happens right and so they just don’t want to be in a situation where they have no ball handling in a playoff game and Patty Mills is like you said very experienced knows what it means to
