Wait to listen to podcasts about this current iteration of the Toronto Raptors baby so go do it all right on today’s show we are uh dissecting as best we can 139 to 98 41o home loss for your Toronto Raptors our dear pal keeks from Raptors internet noting that this is the first

Time the Raptors have lost by 40 plus at home since they were playing games at the sky does so yeah pretty historic Beatdown last night at the hands of the Pelicans we will get into yaka purle some Grim news when it comes to him and his pinky finger uh who knew a pinky

Could be so disastrous we will get into that and what life without yaka Purtle will look like for the rest of the season spoiler alert not great uh We’ve Got The Good the Bad and the H coming up later on as well but I guess we should

Try to at least diagnose why the Raptors lost the game against the Pelicans as decidedly as they did I don’t think anyone had illusions of a win coming into this one no Scotty Barnes no yaka purle no Bruce Brown whole gaggle of new two ways in 10 days in the lineup

Figuring to get minutes and a Pelicans team that is nasty that is huge that has wings and length everywhere that has three-point shooting all over the place it it was uh you know impressive to see the Pelicans on full display last night and I think you know we can get into

Some stuff later on when I get into the good when I’m going to talk about not the Toronto Raptors because nothing was good about the Raptors last night um but the Pelicans are really impressive man and they should probably scare a lot of teams in the Western Conference and they

Should certainly scare the Raptors I mean they have scared the Raptors I don’t think any team over the last couple seasons has owned the Raptors as much as the Pelicans have you know this 41-point win goes on top of a 38o win for the Pelicans against the Raptors in

New Orleans just a few weeks ago it it’s been uh really tough for the Raptors to gain any traction against this team you even think back to last year sort of the loss that signaled the beginning of the end was that game I think in late November early December against the

Pelicans in New Orleans where they got totally waxed and it never felt the same after that you know I think that was part of their their sort of extended losing streak last year in December or you might have kicked it off whatever um either way are a load and for a team in

The Raptors that was starting Emanuel quickley Gary Trent Jr and oai abaji at the one two and three like just totally outgunned sizewise that was the big thing here like there was just no combination of players available to the Raptors that was going to match the physical might of the New Orleans

Pelicans in this game and it was very much akin to we’ve all been there you know Young basketball players playing against maybe like an older brother an uncle your dad your grandpa whatever you know when you’re young and you’re small and you’re physically overmatched because your bone density isn’t what it

Will one day be as an adult you have to resort to like sneaky tricks to try and win basketball games in a one-on-one setting against larger more developed people that was what this one looked like in the first quarter when the Raptors got out to a decent start they

Were at up 1914 at one point it was a beautiful fleeting five minutes of basketball where things looked pretty good you know forced the first time out from the Pelicans and a lot of it was just all right we’re small so we’re going to bomb as many threes as we

Possibly can and be little scamps on defense and run around and kind of be annoying and it worked for a hot second you know Emanuel quickly had a nice pullup in transition Gary Trent Jr I think hit three threes in that stretch it’s very much felt like the take a

Bunch of threes and prey kind of game plan and I don’t know what else they could have done to overcome the physical uh you know odds against them in this one the Pelicans are just ridiculous they’re massive yonas F and chunis you know for all Kelly Lin’s worth that’s a

Tough matchup for kellyo lin yonas is an absolute load and you know to the Raptor’s Credit in that first five-minute stretch it seemed like they were sort of capitalizing on the you know slower Pelicans team when they’re you know in that sort of super huge configuration with herb Jones at the two

And Ingram and Zion at the three three and four and valent chunis at the five you know they were stretching them out that’s what the threes were about right it was you know Kelly oin has the ball up high they are going to pull yonas away from the basket they’re going to

Try to get stuff going in behind and they’re going to create threes off of that and they did for a little bit it was nice but then the Pelicans did the thing where oh so it’s not working with yonas well we also have like a million

Wings we can go to we got Trey Murphy thei third just hanging out on our bench we got Larry n Jr a really good small ball five option we’re just going to go small now as a counter to this 1914 run and when they did that it was an instant

12-2 Run for the Pelicans and they never looked back after that and that was the final chess move right that was like a very early Checkmate by the Pelicans oh you think you can beat our big lineup well okay we’ll go a little bit smaller but we’re still huge we’re still way

Bigger than you good luck beating this now and the end result was a 41-point beat down where it didn’t feel like the Raptors were even close after about the 8 Minute Mark of the first quarter and it’s a bummer but this is probably going

To be a script we see play out a bunch of times down the stretch the Raptors simply as currently constructed without yaka Purtle and Scotty Barnes they don’t have the size to hang in the modern NBA where size is the name of the game and

All of the best teams all of the teams that uh you know have designs on you know deep playoff runs they’ve prioritized being huge that is just the way the league has gone it’s the natural sort of evolution of small ball what if small ball but with guys who all have

Those skills of small players and are 610 and above or 69 and above you know the Raptors going back to Vision 69 weren’t wrong in their vision of hey you know the future of the league is going to be everyone is huge they I think got the right you know the wrong combination

Of players to execute that Vision um and they were maybe a little bit ahead of the curve and you know too early on it and you know just couldn’t quite find the skill sets to mesh but you look at that that Pelicans team man they’re huge across the board they didn’t even have

Dyson Daniels in this game Who himself is like 68 and massive as a Defender um they’re a nasty nasty team and they are just one of the worst potential matchups for this current iteration of the Raptors that starts three guys 65 and under RJ Barrett 66 67 and doesn’t

Really play like that as a defensive player all that often offensively yeah he’s a bull but defensively we’ve yet to really see him kind of find a Groove and then Kelly oen again bless his heart man he played a really nice game 15672 and2 you know doing everything you can want

From Kelly oen as the sort of Steward of this team with Scotty Barnes and yakob Purtle out and still just not nearly enough on the defensive end not nearly enough physical um you know sort of just like the physical mismatch here was it was like you know how sometimes it’s

Like oh could Kentucky beat an NBA team no because like the physicality is just not there and the talent’s not there this felt like the NBA version of could Kentucky beat an NBA team and the answer is a very definitive no the Raptors just ain’t equipped right now man having no

Scotty no Yak is h a real real blow and it seemed like the yak of purle absence might not be all that prolonged however we got some bad news last night that is probably going to spell the end for yaka purle season and the end of really

Anything of note for this Raptor’s team when it comes to sort of big picture Foundation L we’re going to get into that and what life without yaka purle is going to look like coming up in just one second here on the show today’s show is brought to you by

All right continuing on here with your first listen of the day thanks so much for tuning in as we pick up the pieces after a bludgeoning at the hands of a very good New Orleans Pelicans team um this is life man I I mentioned off the top the Raptors have entered their

Purgatory era and that is very much what it feels like 20 games to go and with no Scotty Barnes and no yaka purdle I think we can kind of spell the end of the notion that this back part of the Season could be about building Foundation getting chemistry in order figuring out

Sets you know figuring out how the guys who are going to be on this team long term fit with one another there’s just not enough connectivity now with no yaka purle no Scotty Barnes there’s not going to be a whole lot to glean in terms of big picture things that can be applied

To next season without those two extremely important players the defense I don’t know how you run a defense that makes sense that is connected that is in tune without Scotty barnes’s backline Rim protection and yaka purle as your pick and roll Defender your your standard rim protector like without

Those two guys this defense is absolutely drawing dead we saw it last night and you know there will be some matchups where they are a little bit more able to hang against smaller teams and whatnot they’ll have nice nights I’m sure where things pop and you know bench

Guys come in and have really nice performances that always happens NBA players are very good they have their nights but this game against the Pelicans is probably what you can expect to be the norm down the stretch and that is a bummer like that’s not fun

Basketball to watch man it really is not and it’s an especially a bummer because this season has been so fractured right you had the start of the Season where like the first couple weeks it seemed actually okay pretty promising the defense is good Dennis shuder is playing

Out of his mind maybe there’s something here with this team then it all falls off the rails they have their sort of era of UN certainty as they plunge further down the standings and ogan anobi and Pascal SE aam’s Futures become you know the topic dour OG gets traded

And it seems like okay Fresh Life Barrett quickly SE yakum Barnes there’s something here you get four games of that those beautiful four games the highlight of the season for me um those those four games after the OG trade where things looked like they might just

Be all right then yaka purle gets hurt man yaka purle getting hurt has just spelled bad things for the Raptors all season long huh he’s pretty important um and I think it adds irony and just like a layer of I don’t really know how to

Feel about this as it relates to the top six protected pick that we are currently going to be sweating out down the stretch we’ll get into that in a little bit here too but um yeah you’ve had all these different eras the post SE Yak injury version of that team that just

Did not have it at all then they trade seaka you have that between SE yakum trade and trade deadline thing where Bruce Brown’s a question other guys are potentially going to get moved then they finally get their team together finally February the 8th they they you know the

Deadline comes and goes they get oin they get aaji they keep Bruce Brown and it seems like all right cool there’s a team here there’s something interesting to watch something that can inform what’s going to happen next season and then Scotty Barnes gets hurt yaka PE

Gets hurt and there’s just not a whole lot in the way of things to glean now and they’ve entered this new era where you know those 10 games or so pretty sweet you know where the the offense was working the the you know they were figuring things out in terms of

Different combinations and lineup Combos and things like that and now we’re at the point where those sort of bigger picture team system things are not really something to watch for because none of this is really going to inform what next year’s team looks like because next year’s team is presumably going to

Have Scotty Barnes and yaka purle on it to make it make a whole lot more sense so we’re left now the sort of pivot now if you’re a fan is okay the big picture stuff not so good the you know the the playin race seemingly dead in the water

Both the Hawks and the the Nets won last night both those teams have more juice to win these games down the stretch than the Raptors do without Scotty Barnes and yaka Perle the draft pick situation totally out of their hands the Grizzlies are bad the Blazers are really bad they

Have a head start on getting to that six spot in the draft lottery there are arguments both for and against the Raptors conveying the pick this season they’re kind of in pergatory with that in particular right now where nothing they do is really going to tangibly affect their draft position and they’re

Going to be subject to the lottery odds like May 15th or whatever the lottery happens that’s the day that’s really going to decide things here for the Raptors and again like if they convey the pick I’m perfectly okay with that it sucks optically to lose the pick you

Know when when you’ve traded away a first rounder with a sort of minimal protection and then it comes and bites you in the worst possible way it could being the seventh or eighth overall pick yeah that stinks optically as far as team building as far as you know the

Optimism I have for the future none of these injuries none of what’s going to happen over these last 20 games really affect that I do think there’s a lot to grow on here you know quickley Barrett Barnes Grady dick yaka purle Kelly o linck that’s a real six-man group to go

Into next season with oi abaji obviously is there as well we’ll see who else pops down the stretch they have optionality in the summer they’ve got at least two draft picks in the top 32 or so like they would will have themselves plenty of opportunity this summer to improve

And come into next season looking good but down the stretch here I totally get if you’re checked out if you’re glazed over because there’s like no draft pick implications to really root for no playing implications to really root for and so the thing you’re left rooting for

You know you’re not rooting for you know team success you’re not rooting for instilling of principles and all of that it’s basically individual performances and things that you can point out from Individual guys and say hey that’s exciting that’s something that you know maybe portends something in the future

You know Emanuel quickly I think in this game is a pretty good example right quickly in this one you know 17 points seven boards seven assists just one turnover was guarded by herb Jones for a lot of this game and look per the matchup data did not score a single

Point in the possessions where he was guarded by herb Jones but credit to him for hunting switches finding different matchups to go and exploit and he had himself a pretty solid game you know only two of seven from two-point range that’s not what you want to see he’s

Been trending upward from two of late it sucks to see a bit of a regression there but the Pelicans are also enormous and have a length everywhere not the type of team I expected to have quickly go you know eight for 10 from two-point range against or anything like that he was

Bombing threes created without turning it over I think this was a pretty good game for quickly and frankly he’s the guy I’m most excited to watch down the stretch because he is going to be the main focus of attention for defenses he’s going to have to learn on the Fly

Here he’s going to have to figure things out you know in game as to how to approach different looks and schemes he’s going to see he’s going to see a lot of double teams one would assume if teams are actually worried about scheming at all for the Raptors which I

Guess is another question but yeah I I think watching quickly continue to kind of Ratchet up the level of difficulty on the job he’s been asked to do down the stretch I think it can only mean good things going forward as we go into next season yesterday on the show I kind of

Compared it to playing a video game on the hardest level then going back down to the the next level which will kind of be what quickly is going into next year you know he goes from super hard to kind of hard and then all of a sudden oh

Things are a little bit easier I’ve kind of you know gone up against worse than this is kind of the hope for quickly next season and what he get gets to do against you know the best opposing Defenders the herb Joneses of the world I think can be pretty informative and

Can also inform his development right if he has struggles if he has failure that’s something you can take you know process apply things and then go and address in the summer with a good offseason of work as well um so you’re looking for that you know you’re looking

For Gary Trent Jr can he find a way to carve himself into the plans of the for the Raptor’s future we’ll see I don’t know he had a nice game last night I suppose four of 10 from three three of those three coming threes coming in the

First like four minutes of the game I don’t know you know how you feel I I feel like I haven’t learned anything about Gary Trent Jr all season long he’s still the same guy to me but maybe that guy isn’t is enough does enough and is worth keeping around who knows we’ll see

Either way um that’s what you’re after individual performances the guys off the bench Javon Freeman Liberty we’ll talk about him coming up in a little bit you know does DJ carton do something to you know tickle your fancy does Mohammad ugay do something I certainly don’t

Think Jordan war is going to do anything you know does jamas Ramsey pop in a 10day contract like that’s the stuff we’re talking about here we’re in the Ben Uso Solomon alab Zone can one of these guys carve out a long-term role with a team that’s kind of the thing to

Watch here it’s tough man it’s just without Yak without Scotty there is very little this team can do and most NBA opponents outside of the very worst teams the Wizards the Hornets the Pistons the the Blazers of the world this is not going to be a team that has

A lot of juice against the best teams in the NBA they’re going to have to hope teams have off nights run into injuries if they want to win games but at this point winning games like it’s probably not going to mean much anyway like they I don’t think they’re going to really

Change their position in the standings they’re probably just going to be exactly where they are seventh in the lottery odds and we’ll see where the chips fall from there but yeah not exactly what you want without Scotty or yakob purle this team is no longer a team with any sort

Of cohesive identity and that’s a bummer because it seemed like they were finding it with those two guys playing really good basketball post trade deadline we’ll come back on the other side we’ll get into The Good the Bad and the H to round out the show and uh you know

Please stay please please keep listening I know it’s a bummer but hey there’s still some stuff to enjoy stuff to talk about stuff that’s interesting and uh stuff to you know get mad about as well like Jordan War’s defense we’ll get into all that coming up in just one

NBA all right rounding it out with The Good the Bad and the H here to uh close off your Raptors Pelicans recap the people out there in the Discord in particular thought I wouldn’t be able to get a 30-minute podcast out of this game but that that’s just that’s I’m a pro

What am I supposed to say I’m really good at hearing the sound of my own voice so uh while the team stinks while the back part of the Season feels like it has no meaning to it don’t worry I’ll still be here talking it all out we’ll get into some bigger picture stuff

Obviously too um but I’m excited to kind of you know we’ll get into the draft stuff probably a little prematurely as well we we’ll keep tabs on all of it as we go forward here so please don’t leave the show just because the team is bad

That’s I all I ask is you know we’re still here to make it fun to be a Raptor’s fan even if the team is not holding up its end of the bargain all right let’s get into the good and look the Raptors were not good in this game

I’m not going to shower any good upon them because they got beaten by 41 points at home so you know what’s good the New Orleans Pelicans are good this is a real ass team and no team like I said has owned the Raptors more over the

Last couple Seasons we’ve got to see up close what the sort of full-fledged Pelicans can be I think I’m kind of obsessed with this team because they’re weird they don’t really you know have a conventional Contender level top two or three on their team like Zion at Peak

Zion is certainly that kind of guy but he’s not really been Peak Zion he’s been more sort of like a you know third gear Zion All Season CJ mccc’s playing awesome basketball we know Brandon Ingram can do great stuff you know I’m just so envious of the core of wings

They have it’s kind of absurd that they can just throw herb Jones and Trey Murphy out there together um you know massive three-point shooting marksmen who are just like really great two-way players it’s a bummer that’s something the Raptors could really use if the Pelicans want to dump one of those guys

Off from the Raptors this summer in a cost-saving measure by all means baby let’s see it happen it’s probably not going to happen because why would you trade away all those really good Wings you know I can I can’t imagine a team trading away all of its really good

Wings that doesn’t happen right um yeah the Pelicans are awesome and I think I’m ready to declare that if a top four team in the western conference is going to fall in the first round I think it’s because they played the Pelicans they are so nasty I think physically against the Thunder they

Could be a real sort of you know tough customer for the Thunder to deal with physically um you know they just kind of got the juice to oversize them and all that stuff you know maybe the Wolves can’t contend offensively with them if they really get huming uh you know I

Don’t think the Nuggets or the Clippers probably lose to them but uh certainly not the Nuggets maybe the Clippers if they’re not fully at you know full steam or they’re injured or whatever ever but uh yeah the Pelicans are nasty and they could totally make themselves a pathway

Here to the Conference Finals if things break right is they’re out of the Nuggets bracket all that stuff they’re really really good and again what a luxury it is to have herb and Trey those two guys rock and uh you know man wings wings what a wonderful thing it will be

To have wings you know who is a wing the Raptors do have who is not good is my bad Jordan wara woof uh yeah I I don’t think I need to see much more Jordan War playing for the Toronto Raptors this season if I’m being totally Frank I would much rather see those

Minutes go to a mohhamed gay I would much rather see those minutes go to Grady dick playing 35 minutes plus I would much rather see Chris bue get some minutes I know there were chance for buet last night dnp CD for him again like bringing some joy and energy that’s

A thing Chris buet does Jordan wara I it kind of baffles me how bad Defender Jordan wara is we saw him get put in the spin cycle by Brandon Ingram for a dunk in this game and it seemed impressive but if you’ve watch Jordan wara play

Defense I don’t really find that move by Brandon Ingram to be all that impressive because everyone does that to Jordan wara sadique Bay a guy known be for like not dribbling did the same thing two different times in the same game to Jordan wara in the same spot of the

Floor with the exact same result War just has no lateral quickness he doesn’t get down into his stance he just kind of stands ight like on stilts getting walked by guys he seems like he’s constantly on roller skates and and when he’s in in rotation doesn’t know where

He’s rotating to a lot of the time and for a guy who’s 68 like I don’t want to be so hard on a guy because obviously like he’s got some juice to him offensively he has some talent but man oh man the defense from Jordan wara like

He might be right now the worst defender in the NBA when you adjust for size he’s 68 you wouldn’t know it it’s just it’s really really tough and it makes a lot of sense when you sort of consider where he fit into the rotation with the

Indiana Pacers a team that didn’t have a lot of wings and he still couldn’t get on the floor it makes sense that the Bucks were you know not married to keeping him around a team that currently could really use some guys who are 68 who offer some juice and Jordan wara

Wasn’t someone they prioriti IED keeping around it makes a lot of sense and I think at this point I don’t need to see a whole lot more he’s a pending UFA I don’t see any world in which the Raptors should be bringing back Jordan War at

This point and I I I think like he should probably be in the Jaylen McDaniel zone of you know what we kind of know what this is we don’t need to see much more of this for the rest of the year you know yes they need guys who

Were 68 but if you’re not going to play like you’re 68 like I don’t know what to say there’s probably not a place for you on the team and so I I feel like this is Harsh maybe I’m sounding like a grump but and not giving a guy a fair Shake

But I just I don’t see it with him outside of those two games where he popped off offensively where the Raptors lost both games notably um you know I I I just don’t really see what’s there with war right now I don’t know what he’s offering I don’t know what he’s

Giving to the Future and so for me I would much rather prioritize Javon Freeman Liberty Grady dick jamus Ramsey like it’s Mohammad ugay like I would rather see those guys play right now over Jordan War 20 minutes for war is just too much we get it we we know it’s

There there’s not a whole lot we’ll come back on the oh wait no we got one more thing uh the hum let the let’s get to the hum shall we um my H for today is Javon Freeman Liberty pretty intrigued by this guy finally get some run last

Night 18 minutes 13 points per our pal Blake Murphy he is now third in Raptor history in points per 48 minutes behind kawi Leonard and pagis St yakovich the Raptor’s Legend uh longtime leader in true shooting percentage among alltime Raptors I think passed by Nigel Hayes in

The last few years why do I know these things I have no idea I’m sick I guess but Javon Freeman Liberty 133 in one last night four7 from the field he’s just really smooth like he’s got like a a nice first step to him he’s long he’s

Got a strong chest too had a couple nice Mo moments defensively in this game sticking with Brandon Ingram staying in front of him you know dealing with push-ups things like that I’m pretty intrigued by Javon Freeman Liberty I’d be totally fine seeing him be just like the full-time backup point guard down

The stretch here playing with the starters a little bit he feels like he might actually of all of these guys have some juice to stick around for more than just the back part of this season he does feel like he’s got a little bit of

Shake to him and you know he’s a big guard right like they can use guys who are oversized for their position he’s 6’4 65 he’s lengthy he’s got pretty long arms it seems and again he’s got that sort of strong chest uh I I’m intrigued to see more Javon Freeman Liberty you

Know he was to me uh one of the most exciting Parts about this game again slim pickings on that front but I I I think of of all the guys we saw sort of in the back part sort of the audition tier of this team he was very clearly

The most impressive to me and so uh yeah let’s uh let’s see more Javon Freeman Liberty let’s see him eat into those Jordan War minutes let’s see him play 25 30 minutes in some of these games might as well because I do think his offensive juice is is pretty much there and like

Without Scotty Barnes they need ball handling chops they just badly need it you know no yaka purle they need some creation Javon Freeman Liberty is flashed creation high-end creation at the g- league all season long doesn’t mean it’s going to translate to the NBA but worth a shot he has shown way more

Than any of these guys has so far this year and um I’d be more than inclined to see a whole bunch of Javon free liberty down the stretch all right that’s going to do it we will leave it off there thank you so much for hanging out you if

You made it to the end of this podcast about a game they lost by 41 points you’re the heroes here you are the true sickos who make this podcast go and I love you all if you are one of these sickos who made it to the end of this

Podcast about a 41o loss let us know in the comments let me know in the Discord whatever it might be uh because you deserve a special congratulations from me you’re the best we will leave it there thank you so much for tuning in we will talk to you again on Thursday as uh

We’ll try to do something big picture maybe you know sort of reflect upon those fleeting 10 games where the Raptors looked like a real team uh we’ll get into that on tomorrow’s show ktie hind I’ll be along Friday to talk about Raptor sons in the meantime follow subscribe rate review tell a friend

Always appreciated when you support the show however you support the show and we’ll talk to you again on Thursday another episode of lockdown Raptors thanks for hanging bye-bye not even close

In Episode 1590, Sean Woodley goes solo to pick up the pieces after the Toronto Raptors found themselves on the receiving end of a 41-point blowout loss to the New Orleans Pelicans that exposed how hard life is going to be with Scottie Barnes and now Jakob Poeltl sidelined most likely for the remainder of the season. Off the top, Sean digs into what a stark physical mismatch this game represented, and how the Pelicans solved the Raptors’ one potential advantage with a single substitution choice in the first quarter to put the game away for good. Next, Sean digs into why the news of Jakob Poeltl having surgery on his dislocated pinky finger spells the end of any kind of information gathering or foundation laying for next year’s version of the team down the stretch. Without Jak and Barnes, the Raptors identity just isn’t achievable anymore. It’s purgatory time, baby. Lastly, Sean runs through The Good (The Pelicans), The Bad (Jordan Nwora’s spectacularly bad defense) and The Hmmm (Javon Freeman-Liberty) to round out the show.
